Actually there is no de facto leader. At this point (10 years) they know the ropes. If you ever come across some of their bts for commercials and/or mvs, they literally are co-directing the shoots. They also generally make up their choreo on the spot for their commercial shoots. They do teach the choreo to other groups.
On the spot is so crazy but makes sense with how much talent they have.
Mayoueba Toutoshi, or “Feeling Lost Is Precious”, is an anthem to the glorious messed up, fuck-upped-ness of youth. It’s a punning reference to a song that is traditionally sung very seriously and sentimentally at Japanese graduation ceremonies. Here they turn it into a rallying rock and roll call to rebellion and unity. They often use it as their final encore at Japanese concerts, where the lyrics resonate best. They really get the crowd excited and emotional. If you’re doing it right, you’re headbanging and crying at the same time. Once again, music by H ZETT M, the jazz dude. Atarashii Gakko shares the credits for the lyrics on this one.
Their name in Japan from the beginning was and still is, “Atarashii Gakko No Leaders”, which translates literally as “Leaders of the New School”, an homage to Busta Rhymes original group, back what he was a teenager. Their manager, OTA, is an old skool hip-hop head, apparently (as is Rin). They simplified their name to Atarashii Gakko!, or “New School” for international purposes, it’s easier, and less confusing, because English Speakers assume (not unreasonably), that “No” means “no”. It really means “of”. In Japan, they often go by just, “Leaders”. These days, they often simplify it more, and just go with “AG”. It’s easy to chant when you’re bouncing up and down.
I love the meaning by their name. Makes sense seeing the “leaders” now. It’s also cool seeing their influence coming from lost of different areas.
Coachella is the festival they performed last month. The channel Asian Pop Footage! has a great playlist of their entire set. Definitely recommend checking it out because they also performed a couple new songs off their upcoming album. Looking forward to more AG reactions!

They did the choreo for the boy group Hey Say Jump's song "negative fighter" ua-cam.com/video/Mpwj7skuYBo/v-deo.html and they instructed Magicour on their song "Wanna Gonna" ua-cam.com/video/aHXszxLI9qo/v-deo.html Though unless you are deep into J-pop, I wouldn't recommend either group, but it is still interesting to watch the videos and see how AG works. The first song is pronounced like Sigh Shoe Gin Roo-ey. It means “Final Humanity”. I’ll be honest, I don’t know what it’s about. Something science-fictiony about the last of the human race? The music and lyrics for this song are credited to H ZETT M, a jazz musician who produced most of their work in this period, and MowMow Lulu Gyaban, an alternative rock group. It’s a sign of how aptypical they are that a young group like this had such off-beat avante garde collaborators.
My recommendation for this video? Turn your screen upside down, and watch it again. It’s like getting two videos in one!
