It's not the Japanese schoolgirls dancing in the streets in themselves. New Yorkers are used to seeing film crews, so they know their job is to walk through and pretend the cameras aren't there.
They've all graduated HS. Full time entertainers now. Also, the details of their beginnings are somewhat unknown, I'm pretty sure it was just Asobi System and their manager OTA putting them together after auditions, or just noting them in their earlier activities, just like other idol groups of that age. Likely meaning "scary" as in, directly opposing how the societal views are. They are, challenging the norm, so maybe it's scary in that way. Being "uniform", and not standing out is at the very core of the society. Wearing uniforms, children having the same backpacks to not stand out, to be "different", differentiated, from the majority. Ever heard of the stigmatism people face for having colored hair, or tattoo's? I am not sure how it has changed since I've heard of these things, but that ideology of being uniform with the majority, to not be different, is rooted very deeply in Japanese culture, it's everywhere.
No, the comedians and MCs are well aware of their greeting beforehand. They play along making dumbfounded and stunned faces, because "silly and shocking" is the image of the band, and how others in the show react to the band adds to the overall image and message. Atarashi Gakko is far from the scariest and most unhinged idols in Japan. Anyone who says this as legit and not in tongue in cheek manner is either new or hasn't explored enough of the idol scene there.
I am a 55 year old music lover, and AG is my very favourite group. I have been listening to and meditating on their music daily for years. The more I learn about them and their philosophy, the more I realize how many of their songs carry a deeper message of joy, gratitude, love, kindness, awe, wonder, and other positive emotions. I believe Pineapple Kryptonite for example is about how sweetness (represented by pineapple) can overcome negativity (represented by the monster) just like Kryptonite overwhelming Superman. That in Zero Pressure Suits, the suit represents a state of mind in which you don’t let negativity drag you down, and challenges roll off you like water on hydrophobic fabric, and if you do get a stain on your suit (something drags you down), you can always wash your suit, which represents forgiveness and redemption. All of their songs have these double meanings of fierce positivity, boundless freedom, the joy of pure creativity, and eternal love. They are so much more than they seem on the surface. They are much more than a band. A deep and endlessly positive transformative philosophy runs through everything they do. In my life I aspire to embody what Atarashii Gakko stands for. They inspire me on a daily basis more than any religious philosophy ever has.
excuse me. "atarashii gakko was born when they met in high school".. please revise that. this group was formed in 2015. mizyu 1998, rin & suzuka 2001, kanon 2002. that time only mizyu was in highschool. :) also, although they don't mind to be called as "idol". they don't consider themselves as "idol". the source is from this old interview ua-cam.com/video/AbKKCyapF7Y/v-deo.htmlsi=MWMs_Xqxqv7pxToz watch start at 4:58.
yes, they don't want to be called idol, they prefer to call themself 'vocal and dance unit'. something that actually translates to 'idol group' without specifically called idol group. they follow different marketing structure compared to standard mainstream idol group though.
The long (relatively speaking) skirts with the uniforms were very popular with the "delinquent" girl gang movement from post war into the 1970s. There's a lot you can hide in a long skirt.
They are quite literally the only music group/artist from Japan that I am actually aware of. They did a cooperation with Captain Disillusion who made a video clip with them as a tool to illustrate special effects technology. They blew me away in that video and I then ended up down a rabbit hole of Atarashi Gakko! videos and loving all of them. They're mesmerising to watch and their videos are great.
For me, their jazz influenced first 2 albums with Victor Records is peak Atarashii Gakko. Their songs and choreography there are unhinged and crazier compare to their recent outputs.
it's more like they (the management) want something easier to accept than those 2 albums. the first 2 albums only get better sales after otonablue blow up, and mostly from people outside japan.
1:15 Kansai is a Region, not a Prefecture. Ôsaka would be a Prefecture as Part of the Region. Other than that, great video! I was already wondering why UA-cam amongst others wanted to shove that pseudo Idol-Bands content into my face. They're weird, but in a good way i guess
i really love them sm, i used to be a really huge fan around 2019-2021 and i remember they werent too popular at that time, it was kinda hard to find even a spanish fan before or even videos like this and now watching them having the recognition they deserve makes me really happy and proud of thdm because they have a lot of talent and a unique discography in my opinion, and i remember being excited because one of their MV's reached 1M views and now that video reached 14M. even though I dont follow/listen to them as much as before they'll always have a special place in my heart AG REVOLUTIOOON!!1!1!!!1!1
I think you got it slightly wrong they supposed be like old gangster girls in 70-80s.. you should look it up “Sukeban” that’s where they got the idea or concept remember this band that started in experimental era like babymetal…
The tittle got me pretty good , i thought it was going to be a video about s girl band that ran an underground bussiness and shady stuff behind the scenes. Learning about this idol group is a good refresher to japanese culture and how this band is pushing for change through their music and actions.
Two more groups to look at are SCANDAL and BAND MAID. Scandal first meet in school as well, check out music video for "Shoujo S" (it was used as one of the openings for the anime "Bleach").
I first heard of AG when they played Tokyo Calling on Jimmy Kimmel Live here in America. It was an amazing performance. Bombastic, clever, catchy as hell, and I was ready to march along with them by the end, even though I had no idea what they were singing about. I grabbed that single and have since enjoyed several of their tracks, with my other favorite being Fly High. I didn't know the history of the group until your video showed up in my feed today. Thanks for that UA-cam Algorithm, and thanks Anormie for the lesson.
One of the most amazing thing about Atarashii Gakko is how EFFECTIVELY their energy transfer into you! Their performance and cheerful, yet crazy and energetic personas are HIGHLY contagious!! Just watching them makes my day (and I'm pretty sure a lot of their fans) happy!!! This is just the beginning of AG world domination!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
It’s a bit interesting to me, they are almost like a combination of American culture and Japanese culture if that makes sense? A good similarity would be something like the persona games only in personality which is really cool to me!
absolutely great and charismatic. but it's a trend since many years already. pop music in japan indeed has a number of artists that are very bold and unique. mostly it's young women, who seek self-expression and they are telling their stories. try REIRiE, or AiNA the ENDo, or Gacharic Spin.
I found out about them through their release of the koi geba mv (it was still pretty new) I really loved their unique music and whole personality as a group. I hope they'll get more popular that they genuinely deserve :)
saw their Intergalactic remake first, pineapple kryptonite maybe my favorite track so far, I do understand why traditional Japanelbows society could find them scurry, but personally find them just awesome.
actually baby metal is just another idol group, with 'metal music' and 'metal fox god' as their main gimmick. actually the original formation of 'ladybaby' are more out of norm. on the other hand, AG! are considered 'unhinged girl group'
@@JS-oi5jt but hanabie is just another metal band. OK, kidding aside, hanabie is not idol group or 'girlband' in that sense. idol group such as boyband/girlband never plays their own instrument, they do sing and dance.
Recommendations brought me here and this my 1st video I’m watching from your channel and it’s my current bias:ATARASHII GAKKO! Great video! Look up their cover of BEASTIE BOYS INTERGALACTIC! ITS FIRE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Very great analyst video on them! I discovered the group New Years Eve of last year, and even though I didn't fully listen to all of their projects, I have a hand full of their songs in one of my Spotify playlist. I listened to them because just like Odd Future they were very unique and challenge their respective current music industry standards.
@Anormie great video! You should really make a video about Momoclo ももいろクローバーZ They are no way "punky" as Atarashii Gakko...but Momoiro Clover Z, as a group, have a interesting history, a deeply rooted fanbase and has strong links to the type of content on your channel.
Their first video I watched just popped up in my feed out of no where just a few weeks ago. It was the dance practice Candy video. I thought it was unusual but I could not stop watching it. Their dancing was well coordinated and not typical of other J-pop groups and the songs are a breath of fresh air. I have since been a fan ever since. Their I don't care attitude is a big winner in my book!!
They're complete. They can sing, dance, do comedy and talk about social problems. That's why Atarashii gakko is so addictive. You can't just get over them, you need more and more
you can tell from their energy and personalities that they were going to blow up. glad they are getting more recognition, i loved their jazzy style at the beginning but i love that they experiment with different genres, their choreo is amazing and they are always sooo fun. cant wait to go to their concert.

I saw them live a couple months ago and let me tell you, I'm obsessed with them. They're hilarious and entertaining. You can tell they're having a good time and are just doing their own thing.
being unhinged is not something you brag about! the US having gone this path before is a testament for this. being unhinged is despised universally and shows the fall of a society. Japanese people's fear of such phenomena is 100% legit
2:53 you should accentuate "idol" group, even if Babymetal, also could be considered idols, also exist and they promote women voices, there's a myriad of Japanese rock avant-garde bands, like my favourite Dir En Grey, that literally has a programme called Freedom Of Expression! Despite our "western" perception, Japan society is slowly changing, but they're doing slowly, in a polite way as fitting! Jokes aside, they are changing positively, I can point out sports that are still perceived "vandalist" like skateboarding or underground like breakdancing, Japanese youth took almost all medals from when those disciplines were included in the Olympics! Meaning even older generations can understand how there's values in the sport and like the two times Olympic gold medalist Yuto Horigami defiantly said to the Olympic athletes press conference in Japan, we're athletes not vandals and people need to accept that! Btw, nice channel! You got a subscriber ready to binge all your videos! If I may suggest a subject, since I saw you also like Japanese culture: Visual Kei. Specifically Dir En Grey a group formed more than 30 years ago, and still going strong while constantly changing and evolving and their vocalist Kyo, an unique artist, poet and...well, impossible to describe without knowing the decades long history! Cheers!
Dude, that was a really good video, IDK why you don't have more subscribers but I loved the pace, the tone and all the information that came with it. Pretty good work my man, I will subscribe to your channel.
They didn't met at highschool at all, it's just a story... for example, Mizyu used to be a dancer for Kyarypappa... they were not at the same school at all.
i found this girl group a few years back and was so surprised how easy to watch their music videos were. its not some crazy good singing, rather its just so easy to digest that makes them enjoyable.
nice video for sure but idk from what i understand AG aren't considered idols, they are a girl group but an idol one, i haven't even seen them referenced as anti-idols despite of what they represent, i guess they are just them on their own style
They are just kids enjoying.. it its either cringe or hilarious. Really depends on you. I find them confident thats why i appreciate them. Probably introverts like me find them awesome.. bc its what we wanted. Just a friend group where we could we free.
I remember. The first time i got obsessed with this group was the time 88rising adopted them and was also the time my uncle's last day. It was rainy morning and as i woke up and their song nainainai popped out on my yt recommendation and the rest is history
We actually have a Hindi (a language) ch in India which is about Japan and how they have “speed motors” in their brain which make them do months work in days and days work in hours, and also showing how they values quietness and calmness over anything. Two different topic and 2pages of the chapter, I love it
Saw them live in Dallas the best concert ever. I been to big concerts over the past 40 years and when my daughter first told me I was like huh. But now I am a fan. Don’t sleep on the genre
The “band boom” is actually called monoculture. Because most media was consumed by most people through the same few avenues. So any musician (or band) that was shown on these mediums they became a focal point of pop culture.
Man, the thing that freaked me out is that I'm playing Persona 4 Golden right now and thought I had my TV on mute and was getting angry... then I realized it was your BGM. haha.

They inspire me on a daily basis more than any religious philosophy ever has.
im 55 to and enjoy there antics keeps me young
excuse me. "atarashii gakko was born when they met in high school".. please revise that. this group was formed in 2015. mizyu 1998, rin & suzuka 2001, kanon 2002. that time only mizyu was in highschool. :)
also, although they don't mind to be called as "idol". they don't consider themselves as "idol". the source is from this old interview ua-cam.com/video/AbKKCyapF7Y/v-deo.htmlsi=MWMs_Xqxqv7pxToz
watch start at 4:58.
🤓☝️
Dude, maybe read "How to win freinds and influence people" and then start with a geeky "Umm actually". People make mistakes.
yes, they don't want to be called idol, they prefer to call themself 'vocal and dance unit'. something that actually translates to 'idol group' without specifically called idol group. they follow different marketing structure compared to standard mainstream idol group though.
@@roberthradek7100 it's okay to have an opinion. you clearly dismissed that idea
@@phitc4242 and I think you may have a problem with reading comprehension. I did not attack his opinion, but the manner they delivered it.
These girls are trailblazers! I've been listening to Atarashii Gakko for a couple of years, and they NEVER fail to deliver! Amazing video btw
The long (relatively speaking) skirts with the uniforms were very popular with the "delinquent" girl gang movement from post war into the 1970s. There's a lot you can hide in a long skirt.
AG are so much fun to watch! No one like them and the energy is insane in the best way. discovered them while streaming Coachella UA-cam
Their songs and choreography there are unhinged and crazier compare to their recent outputs.
it's more like they (the management) want something easier to accept than those 2 albums. the first 2 albums only get better sales after otonablue blow up, and mostly from people outside japan.
agreed. Tokyo Calling is a repetitive boring song. Otonablue is the best.
Yeah, their wild jazzy songs were more interesting. Perhaps I'm just not too fond of the hip hop influence 88Rising brought into their sound
That's definitely the very best era. Now 88Rising just tries to appeal to the Kpop/TikTok masses.
They're also getting older. They can't be bouncing across the stage like they're 15 anymore.
0:14 what song is that?
“Shiken zenya” or nite before the exam on youtube
loving those girls! they recently performed at Coachella and I'm so excited that they are growing
They seem like fun. Genuinely fun to be around and bold. Not just cute, but out there in your face bold.
Thank you for the clarification 👍
0:13 I do not get this, why is this shocking or pause worthy?
She's shooting them in a school
Because girls are only allowed to be sweet and peppy and if they make music it has to be sweet and peppy too.
Guess he's never heard of Baby Metal.
For me, some songs are hit or miss. I enjoy the experimentation too. But the energy is absolutely there!!!
i really love them sm, i used to be a really huge fan around 2019-2021 and i remember they werent too popular at that time, it was kinda hard to find even a spanish fan before or even videos like this and now watching them having the recognition they deserve makes me really happy and proud of thdm because they have a lot of talent and a unique discography in my opinion, and i remember being excited because one of their MV's reached 1M views and now that video reached 14M. even though I dont follow/listen to them as much as before they'll always have a special place in my heart
AG REVOLUTIOOON!!1!1!!!1!1
I LITERALLY LOVE THEIR SONGS ISTG
I think you got it slightly wrong they supposed be like old gangster girls in 70-80s.. you should look it up “Sukeban” that’s where they got the idea or concept remember this band that started in experimental era like babymetal…
scariest what? these western reviews are becoming too off and over-reacting.
Fr
japans great when life gets overwhelming there is a special forest you can go nap in lmao
clickbait title. Atarashii Gakko! are the best.
Well a Sakamoto profile pic on a UA-camr logo what else do you expect
The tittle got me pretty good , i thought it was going to be a video about s girl band that ran an underground bussiness and shady stuff behind the scenes. Learning about this idol group is a good refresher to japanese culture and how this band is pushing for change through their music and actions.
Two more groups to look at are SCANDAL and BAND MAID. Scandal first meet in school as well, check out music video for "Shoujo S" (it was used as one of the openings for the anime "Bleach").
I love them! They're weird. In the ocean of sugary sweet tooth-decaying pop idol group, Atarashii Gakkou really stands out.
0:43 cool pose
Ginyu Force and Power Rangers: "They are one of my people's"
I first heard of AG when they played Tokyo Calling on Jimmy Kimmel Live here in America. It was an amazing performance. Bombastic, clever, catchy as hell, and I was ready to march along with them by the end, even though I had no idea what they were singing about. I grabbed that single and have since enjoyed several of their tracks, with my other favorite being Fly High. I didn't know the history of the group until your video showed up in my feed today. Thanks for that UA-cam Algorithm, and thanks Anormie for the lesson.
I love these girlss i’m so happy they’re getting popular 🥹
Been a fan of AG for years now ... One of the best acts in Japan!
my friend is obsessed with atarashii gakko (and i do mean obsessed) so its nice to see more people liking the same thing my friend does
It’s a bit interesting to me, they are almost like a combination of American culture and Japanese culture if that makes sense? A good similarity would be something like the persona games only in personality which is really cool to me!
absolutely great and charismatic.
but it's a trend since many years already.
pop music in japan indeed has a number of artists that are very bold and unique.
mostly it's young women, who seek self-expression and they are telling their stories.
try REIRiE, or AiNA the ENDo, or Gacharic Spin.
You have just described ano, too :)
Looking at their live show, this is not an idol group. These kids are fucking rock stars
The secret of success = Being yourself
And you will attract a lot of hater and at the same time a lot of fans who is resonate with you.
Can't just be one person to make a difference, has to be a generation willing and spreading a positive message to the change that is desired
How are they scary? They're pretty much Beastie Boys in Japanese girls form. If they're out of norm in Japan how about Baby Metal?
actually baby metal is just another idol group, with 'metal music' and 'metal fox god' as their main gimmick. actually the original formation of 'ladybaby' are more out of norm.
on the other hand, AG! are considered 'unhinged girl group'
Baby Metal is cookie cutter. They don't even play their own instruments. Look up Hanabie. That's a real metal group.
@@JS-oi5jt but hanabie is just another metal band. OK, kidding aside, hanabie is not idol group or 'girlband' in that sense. idol group such as boyband/girlband never plays their own instrument, they do sing and dance.
@@JS-oi5jt "They don't even play their own instruments." Lol. And Atarashii Gakko do ?
@@TheLeomarti You are talking to an elitist don't expect much from these types
Ive never heard of them, i cant wait to watch more of their stuff 🥺✨️❤ amazing video!
I got to see Atarashiii Gakko live, they’re were amazing.
Actually the group an anti-idol singers that they’re against and in protest of the Japanese Idol groups (I follow them since 2017)
They look like they are having fun, happy to learn about them
Last week i was at the San Francisco show and i had a smile on my face the whole time. Great, fun time!
You should really make a video about Momoclo ももいろクローバーZ
They are no way "punky" as Atarashii Gakko...but Momoiro Clover Z, as a group, have a interesting history, a deeply rooted fanbase and has strong links to the type of content on your channel.

This Japanese girl group in particular remind me of those "Sukeban" high school girls from 70s Japan! Just as badass!
I saw them live a couple months ago and let me tell you, I'm obsessed with them. They're hilarious and entertaining. You can tell they're having a good time and are just doing their own thing.
Never heard about them before and suddenly got random algorithm blessings, thanks for the awesome vid!
being unhinged is not something you brag about!
the US having gone this path before is a testament for this.
being unhinged is despised universally and shows the fall of a society.
Cheers!
This has to be the most authentic music group I’ve ever seen
Dude, that was a really good video, IDK why you don't have more subscribers but I loved the pace, the tone and all the information that came with it. Pretty good work my man, I will subscribe to your channel.
They didn't met at highschool at all, it's just a story... for example, Mizyu used to be a dancer for Kyarypappa... they were not at the same school at all.
I love them so much, they’re coming to Mexico and I’m glad to say IM WATCHING THEEEEEEMMMM
i found this girl group a few years back and was so surprised how easy to watch their music videos were. its not some crazy good singing, rather its just so easy to digest that makes them enjoyable.
I was amazed when I discovered them in 2022 and they just keep getting better and better. Long Live AG!
Not only is this video poorly researched, the overreliance on orientalist tropes just makes it all the worse.
Yup
nice video for sure but idk from what i understand AG aren't considered idols, they are a girl group but an idol one, i haven't even seen them referenced as anti-idols despite of what they represent, i guess they are just them on their own style
Two different topic and 2pages of the chapter, I love it
Gotta love 新しい学校のリーダーズ!
Lol this was a random japanese group i found and now i just loved it
Saw them live in Dallas the best concert ever.
Man, the thing that freaked me out is that I'm playing Persona 4 Golden right now and thought I had my TV on mute and was getting angry... then I realized it was your BGM. haha.
Thank you so much for this video! I had no clue who these girls were. You introduced me to their music and its FIRE!!
I am infected now haha You got that Like and Sub homie! A timestamp at 1:50 sums it up so well like you said.
I've seen them on NHK a few times, unique is the word i'd use for them.
This look slike an amazing friendship! Also, I like Suzuka's demeaner!!!!
found their music last year and enjoyed it a lot. now after watching their video and learning what they stand for i love them even more! great video! easy sub! 🔥
I know them from an instagram reel were they sing this "shut up heather" song. I had the song with their funny pronountiation in my head all day and now this video is recommended to me 😭
Suzuka is going to be around for awhile. She's got a stand out personality. The other three are fine, but you could replace any one and the sound and style wouldn't change.
I agree the music has messages Japan doesn't want to acknowledge that exist. Still, Atarashii Gakko is an awesome group.
im addicted to them, i love thier personalities so much
