WORLD NO.1 Golf coach told me TO NEVER stand square to these shots!

- How you stand to a driver golf shot and iron golf shot has a HUGE impact on how straight you can driver or strike you irons! World NO.1 Golf coach Peter Cowen! He says: I'm not a fan of perfectly square alignment for the average player because it takes a perfect shot to hit it where you're aiming. I'd advise most amateurs to align different for irons and driver to help promote more divot strike with irons and an inside path with driver! Doing this will allow you to hit your driver longer and straighter and hit more green with your scoring irons

*You have to listen to this! This is what Pete Cowan says, the worlds best golf coach!*
This is what Ben Hogan said as well when Pete was in diapers .
That opening of the feet on irons compared to slight closing on driver. What about with hybrids and fairway woods. Because both should be hit 'slightly' down onto the ball, are you saying that we should be slightly open on those clubs too then? Basically closed, pull trial foot back on driver and open, pull lead foot back on everything else?
This is the method Ben Hogan talks about in his book. it works great. Got caught up in the square setup for a few years have gone back to this method and its made a huge difference. Really glad to see this as it validates what I am doing. Great lesson
Ben Hogan's....Power Golf...chapter 3
OMG I just realized that I did the same thing. Used the hogan setup and crushed the ball. Was told by a pro to square up and I’m lucky to hit driver 220. I can’t wait to try the old stance again!!!
Excellent tutorial!!!!
GREAT STUFF AS ALWAYS! Thanks.
Best tip I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you, Alex!
Another solid message Alex. Easy to understand and apply. Thanks for your continuing help-Russ
Simple, concise instruction in plain English without any waffle. Great stuff, Alex.
Thanks Sean!
@@AlexElliottGolf just a quick question re driver. When you close your feet, hips and forearms to target line do you keep the shoulders square to target line.
Tried this with my last 3 iron shots today. Excellent results. Height, accuracy, ball first contact. Thank you
Great vid, thanks Elliott. The orientation of the feet makes perfect sense, especially when you put it in context of throwing in general. As an American, I learned to throw a football and a baseball about the time I could walk. In both cases, the feet naturally land in the positions you call out. If you simulate a baseball throw (an iron swing) your left foot naturally lands a bit inside (as you showed). If you do the same thing simulating throwing a football (where you lean back a bit 1st) you get the exact foot placement as you show in a drive with the rear foot slightly behind the front foot. I took these deeply engrained feelings of throwing to the range and it fit perfectly. Thank you.
Makes total sense! Thanks🥰
Great advice took this to the range huge difference thanks alex 👍
I can resonate with this. I've been doing what Alex showed here with success through years of self discovery. Keep it going Alex, really enjoy your practical tips.
Tried this today. An open stance with my irons and wedges felt weird but WOW - so much less effort hitting the ball more pure, loved it! And didn’t miss one tee shot either (teed 4-woods mostly, but kept the same principle as with driver). Result? Nine holes at even par without any real difficulty. I’m usually around +2 to 3 with my 5hcp. Thanks a lot bud!!
Alex! This was it for me. Just got back from the range trying these tips and I’ve never hit irons better. I could really feel the compression and the ability to really get down the ball as I transition in the swing and was seeing some great shops shapes as well
This is absolutely perfect thx Alex
Been doing this for about 5 months now, ball striking the best it has ever been at age 60 !
Yes love that!!
Great advice
I’ve been doing this for driver and it’s awesome. Never thought of doing it for irons. Going to try it ASAP. Thanks, Alex!
Alex I have heard this about the driver but never about the irons. Can't wait to try it!
Excellent point by Pete Cowen and your explaining it Alex! By opening up the stance with irons, it appears that one is able to get through the ball easier. With driver, hybrids, and fairway woods, I naturally try to swing on an in to out path, so my stance may be as you suggest. Now, I'm going to have to check this out! Good Job Alex!!!
Great teacher! I'll join when I can. Thx.
i like the tips.. this will help me realign my iron game a bit..
Great video - thanks Alex
But how would you set up for fairway woods & hybrids, presume just treat a hybrid like a long iron ? but would about the 3 wood that I use off the deck ?
thanks ... A;an
Beautifully explained and demonstrated, many many thanks!
You're very welcome!
🙏🏻great advice
I setup like you showed for driver and allow for draw by aiming left (Im a LH Golfer) but occasionally it stays left and doesnt draw back. My bad miss is overdraw or even duck hook.
Have been setting up closed to my irons as well which I also draw/hook/pull right so cant wait to try your open lower half stance on my irons now. Cheers
I tried this today (10/2) and when I did it correctly it really worked. A big improvement on my hitting the ball. 👍
GOLD! Thank you 😊
You're so welcome!
Alex - lovely stuff - this is a really useful set up and confirms what I know works well - that said I was still tending to set up square as the 'correct' way so often in two minds which is not a good place to be. I'm sticking with this all the time from here on.
In order to hit a straight ball with path if you want a neutral swing you must stand open slightly on any club you are hitting off the ground.
This is in Ben Hogans old book way before all of these guys were teaching. That's how you zero out the path.
Sean Foley and Tiger Woods were demonstrating this a lot. Justin Rose also.
I just tried this , for the driver it was amazing can't wait to take it to the course, much better accuracy and confidence.
Great tip Alex, as always. You have helped my game so much. You look look you have lost weight, I hope all is well man!
Thanks for this ! Alex can you give me your opinion on Sir Cowen’s coaching on turning down your trail forearm on iron shots maintaining trail extending back thru the impact without release. Thanks in advance
I’ve started doing this with driver and it helped get rid of some horrible slices. The slight open stance for irons will test next week!!
Btw … left foot a. It turned also hells a lot to have more stability in follow through
I've just tried standing as you did and it was unexpectedly easier. Ball flew straight too.
Thanks a lot coach :D
I’m going to the range tomorrow I will give it a try 👍.
This is brilliant , will definitely try
All the best. Let me know how you get on
Alex, my golf game has improved tremendously in the last month due to your coaching tips.
Brilliant, so glad it worked for you. Appreciate you tuning in 🙌🏼
Another pro gem. It’s not about “ swing thought analysis “. Dead aim and good stance and posture is gold
I’ve always had an open stance and i’ve played for over 30 years. I feel a lot more comfortable, know much better where the target is and swing through to it with more confidence.
Alex brilliant. Exactly that what I do.
Needs fine tunning.
It works for everybody.
100%
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I’m a 6 handicap and you just made a huge lightbulb go on in my head. 🎉Thank you.
Thanks!
Welcome! Thank you so much
i've had the hogan book for many years and this is what he recommended too but i never heeded the advice and i would line up square. i'm gonna work on this, thnx for the help.
Thanks Alex, I take you to the range and the Course.
Love that!!!
Great stance tips. I will be trying this. I do have a question. How far do you need to stand away from the ball with all the various clubs? Sometimes I feel I’m to close and crowded and sometimes I feel I’m too far away and reaching for the ball. Thanks. Ned in the USA.
Great tips! I’m surprised if I hit a perfect shot so I don’t get disappointed
Alex, what alignment for woods off the deck?
Open stance leads to an out to in clubhead path so you will fade the ball. Ok for short irons, but for long irons ?
Does hybrid set up follow the guidance fo rirons? Open stance?
The driver stance it’s something I’ve been doing since the John Rahm draw technique you and some other talked about months ago. I used this with the Driver and eliminated slices and hit longer and straighter but I m going to try the iron stance which must work as well . I’ll give it a try.
Let me know how it works
Well I think it works ! My left hip opens more and I’m feeling more free and fluid but sometimes I hit it way left , I ve seen the video again and I forgot to keep the shoulders lined to the straight line . I’m working on it. Thanks
I now stand slightly open for all shots.. always have hit a draw or the odd pull. Now at 60yo I find it harder to pull my left hip back in the downswing. So have been standing open a while now. Shots are straight now and get through the ball better
Can we say that for woods and long irons 4-5-6 we play with the right foot back and for 7-wedges we play with the left foot back?
Well done alex 🏌♂️ 👏 😊
Thank you
Nice one
Thanks for watching
to much snow today may be next week thank you for the tips.
QUESTION: If I am using a 4-5 iron off the tee for a par 3, do you recommend a slightly open stance or slightly closed stance?
Ok, understand open for irons and closed for driver. What about hybrids, woods, and wedges?
so glad you made this video, I've been feeling slightly guilty for doing this, thinking I'm technically doing it wrong even though it improved my accuracy. it just feels right.
As a side note with the shorter irons, this also helps restrict the backswing so you dont overswing on those
Hi, With in 50 / 60 yards we open our-self directly proporsonate to how much we open the club face for loft / trajectory.
What Alex said that is in general.
I understood that way.
In general, back foot back is draw type shots and vise versa.
Difficult to play a fade shot with back foot at back.
So, when I want a fade shot it's just opposite.
😂😂😂😂😂
Nice to see videos of shots from the green. I think it’ll make your videos better too with more of those. Thank you again for these tips.
My question is how do I avoid releasing early and as a result getting a chicken wing on my follow through? It’s costing me compression and distance. Any swing thoughts that’ll help?
Great to hear! Thank you so much James!!
Got a great one for you coming this Wednesday!!
I seriously need a bag Alex 🙏🙏🙏
Alex I injured myself last Thurs on the driving range. Pulled a muscle in my left hip . Pain radiated from Hip to my kidney. Had to go to ER and receive morphine. Pain is going away. I did normal warmup drills with my arms and legs and did pivot exercise and legs together exercise . Felt fine. Yet after hitting 25 balls , I hurt myself on the 25 th ball. This is the first time I really injured myself swinging easy the golf club.
What would you do to prevent future injury to myself
Hi Alex! Great tips for both clubs. But I'm a little confused on the swing path of the iron cos I didn't hear if you're still swinging in to out or straight through. As for the driver, I did hear you mentioned the swing from inside path. Thanks!
Great question i will feature this question this week!
Thats the Eureka swing minus the weight on lead foot
Can't wait to get to the course, only 2 months of snow then can give this a go! What's your feeling about indoor golf ranges? Habit builder or killer! Thanks Alex.
Yeah i love indoor ranges! Great option
With irons, won't that promote a fade all the time? Would just opening the left foot up (for a right handed golfer) work just as well? Curious
I tried this closed stance with my driver yesterday and I actually hit it straighter and had the occasional soft draw. But I made the mistake of also closing my stance with my irons and although I hit some straight shot, I also had some bad hooks. I'll have to work on the open stance method. Alex, which method would you advise for the 3 wood and recovery clubs off the deck?
Where abouts did you get that Ryder cup bag I’m desperate for one
Definitely going to try this. I’m down to 10.2 h/c. Struggling with consistency with driver. Quite happy with irons. What would you suggest with fairway wood / 3/4 hybrid Alex?
I’d address hybrid like a long iron and woods like driver. That’s what I do
As an aside, combining this driver setup with your advice to set the club face at 11:58 (o’clock) worked perfectly for me - trying it 1st time on the course. Thank you!
"I could sell that ball flight for a lot" - terrific comment
Alex - always great content. I’d like to see you do a video on the single plane swing. Specifically on content by Kirk Junge. I’d like to see what you think on the uncocked ulnar deviation position of the left wrist and straight left arm. Super simple swing and very long and straight. I’m a 8 handicap 66 year old who’s been golfing 30 years. Thanks Rich
Great idea!!
Irons open , driver and woods closed stance . Would lofted irons also be open??
100% agree with this. I do about a half step back on the right foot. I swing easier and the ball flies further with less effort.
Alex you said at the end use that set up for driver and irons then at the beginning you said use an open stance I’m confused
Awesome tip! What flight monitor do you use? Thank you
That’s the Full Swing Kit.
Thanks, Alex. I'm 76 years old and I have been using that driver hint for most of this season. My drives have been far more consistent, and my miss is to pull them to the left. The distance has increased quite a bit. I have never seen that iron stance before, but if I hit irons I would certainly try it. I have all hybrids and fairway woods. Does that open stance apply to them as well?
Yeah i would like to see that :)
I tried pulling my right foot back for my hybrids and fairway woods. It worked amazingly! I have never hit them better. I have been shooting in the low to mid 80s since I started doing this. I can't thank you enough!
@@AlexElliottGolf
I have been doing this and it helps with accuracy for me. In driver you said feet, hips and forearms aiming right - I assume shoulders are still square to the target line or are they in a closed position aiming right as well?
Yeah that is right mike, I have another video going out tonight which should help assure some of the questions you had and i will be mentioning your comment. Thanks for tuning in:)
Definitely going to try this. Thoughts on the ryder cup?
Great for team Europe and I think an overall great event. What about you.?
@AlexElliottGolf Good on Team Europe. Played as a team better than we did. Plus course setup played a bigger role than I'd imagined.
2 things: #1-how is it that we can avoid cutting across the shot with irons and an open stance? #2- why doesn't this approach work with longer clubs?
Dopey question time. With the driver, if club face determines start direction and it’s straight at target but you’re swinging right why doesn’t it start straight and move left?
Hi, it's not at all, good question... I don't have the exact answer for this as i'm not sure on exact what the cause would be for your swing but i have a video going out tonight which should help answer this question. Thanks!
4 days ago you did a video where you said NOT to take a WIDE stance. Is this still true when using this technique?
For the hybrid, does one follow the seet up process for irons, or for driver? Open up stance or close stance?
would really like your thoughts
i will try and cover this in another video for you 🙌🏼 thanks for tuning in!
Gretchen Drill Alex, this presst makes my Ironie swing mich easier😊😊😊
Would they both work the other way round tho if you wanted to fade your driver ans draw the irons
Yeah
I tried this playing 9 holes today and it worked so well with both irons and driver! I just set up like I normally would then just before I begin my back swing I step my foot back a bit and swing as before. My aim with the irons has greatly improved and no more fades with the driver! I also used your pitching and chipping tip with the lead foot slightly aimed towards the target and my accuracy has improved with my short game too. After playing for 2 years I think I'm going to break 90 now.
Alex is you swing path with driver is in to out. Is the swing path the same with the irons with and open stance? Just wanted to clarify that, as It looks a little out to in with the irons?
Yeah for this approach that is right
I need a bag
This is the “Eurika” swing Steve Johnston teaches
When setting up for the driver, your hips and feet are slightly closed. Do you also close your shoulders or keep them parallel to the target line?
Keep my shoulders parallel to the target line! thanks for tuning in, i hope the tip helped
When he said that's the adjustment you've got to make. It just clicked, I think I will be saying goodbye to 250-yard drives
Play with a closed stance with all my clubs helps me make a larger turn 70 yrs old
Listen to Alex............I have been watching his videos, and I have gone from battling to break 100 every Sunday, to shooting an 83 last week, nothing worse than bogey the whole round! Even birdied a hole I always struggle to make bogey.................I am hitting the ball farther, and hitting more greens.........I am 70, love the game, but always been a high handicapper........till lately. If I can do it, you can.
This is in Ben Hogan’s book.
Nice jacket
Reminds me of Jim Veneto golf swing?
So slightly open stance for irons & slightly closed stance for Driver (and I’m assuming 3W & 5W as well)?
Yeahb
wait... how does this work with your last video about a narrower stance with the driver?
Not all videos are the same, not every video and style works for every golfer so i need to cover different topics just like i do when i'm teaching, michael :)
got it, thanks!@@AlexElliottGolf
Can you still hit draws with the iron setup, thanks
Yeah
