Quick Tip. We always remove and throw away the straps to our trail cams and replace them with rubberized wire that you can buy at Tractor supply or any hardware store. The strap is always the give away for thieves on the lookout. We also carry one step so we can get the camera high enough we’re people can’t mess with it and deer aren’t bothered by it. Thanks for a great video.
One thing I like about public is feeling like you're hunting old school cause you really don't have a knowledge of all the bucks in the property or know how they use the property. Great videos as always
Great video and hunt as always guys. Awesome buck, Shawn! Thanks for bringing some full content back to a free platform like UA-cam. Missed seeing you guys!
I love hunting a new area, scouting is fun and figuring out the deer pattern. Then when you see a deer on the stand you did your job. Enjoyed the video
Moved from PA to IA a year ago Sept 22. Definitely living a whitetail dream. Had same emotions hunting public. A year wiser this year. Looking for bigger this year. Congratulations, cool hunt.
I too am about to start a journey for public land giants, it's a true grind of early season scouting and putting in the miles, on foot and in truck! And always the fear of someone finding your spot and over hunting or just stealing your gear! Great hunt, and thanks for the inspiration and motivation to stay true to the course for success!
I have had similar success hunting public land close to the parking areas or a road. Like you said if the deer sign is there, trust it. Enjoyed the hunt.
I’ve been hunting Iowa first shotgun season with my preference points I’ve built up for the last 3 seasons. Through an outfitter, I’ve had great success. Awesome state to hunt big whitetails. I’d rather hunt with the bow, but if I can hunt Iowa every year with a shotgun, heck I’ll deal with it. Nice buck bud 🤘🇺🇸
Love it. This type of cinematic, voiceover but still some talking head style is where it's at. Not too much treestand whispering which is very played out.
Good video man! Hi from iowa. It's good to throw in some ground noise when rattling. deer aren't silent out there when they are moving around especially when jostling. They usually tickle their antlers for a few minutes as opposed to full on fighting immediately
i was chasing a buck on public that had several different beds for different winds that all had a clear line of sight to the access where everyone parks he was a big 10 pointer. i got tired of playing cat and mouse with him and moved on. that was a few years ago so i doubt hes alive anymore but i wouldnt be suprised if another buck is doing the same thing in the area. im sure they do that more then you would think.
@HeartlandBowhunter I'm blessed to be In southwestern iowa and to have access to about 700 private acres. 80 is right behind house. Walk put of garage and in stand in 10 to 20 min
Wow when I seen you setting up with the same heavy sticks that I use I couldn't believe my eyes ,thought okay maybe I didn't make a mistake purchasing them. This is the only way I hunt blind in with no camera. KISS method
@@HeartlandBowhunter i know hunting public in Michigan is a little different. But the tactics like overlooked spots work everywhere . I've watched you guys for years and love everything. Good luck
Congratulations ! , But I don't understand... walking around Oct. 28 in Iowa, without your Bow ??? W.T.? ... I learned over 40 years ago from "Uncles" Barry & Gene, "Always be prepared for an Opportunity" What would you have done, when the Biggest Buck you ever saw in your Life, came walking by, at 20 yards ?? L.O.L's. I NEVER go in the woods , during open season, without my Bow .I shot one of my biggest bucks, from the ground, walking in to my stand, at 2:00 in the afternoon, because I was "Prepared for an Opportunity", by practicing shooting my Bow, with my Backpack and Tree-stand on. Show me a Hunter, who's Prepared for an Opportunity, And I'll show you someone who's real 'Lucky"
You lost me when you passed the pasture poodle. Its funny how guys want to revert back from cell cameras or cameras at all. You might be hunting on public land but i just dont feel the appeal your looking for . Coming from a true blue public hunter. As always wonderful camera and computer work tho 🤙
All u hunt UA-cam channels are all the same all out west where there is giants that run around everywhere lol i gotta start filming in pa and show ya how real hunters hunt
I watched your full video. Congratulations on the nice deer but I don’t think I will watch any more of your content. Letting that coyote go was not acceptable
Luckiest shot I’ve seen. Why does everyone with a UA-cam channel shoot like crap? 9/10 shots are total garbage. If I had a channel, I’d be embarrassed to post this, let alone tell anyone. Hit the archery range boys.
Bad shots happen if you’ve done it enough. It’s not something I am proud of and called out immediately following the shot. That’s humility. That was the purpose of showing it. I will always strive to do better but don’t believe I’m better than anyone else.
I know bad shots happen. I’m a hunter too. And I’m as humble as they come. But my problem is that all of these videos on UA-cam show bad shots which has an exponential effect on thousands of other hunters. It’s essentially saying to millions, “it’s okay to miss, it’s just one animal…I don’t need to train until days before hunting season, everyone does it.” I apologize, but I expect more from the hunting community. We have a privilege, but we can lose it. Just look at Chris Bees video and what happened in Southern Australia. All said, I’m happy you recovered that deer. From an Iowan to you, glad you enjoyed the hunting and state.
I appreciate that. It was a hunt and experience I will never forget. The state of Iowa is a very special place with some incredible natural resources. I have never advocated to begin preparing for a hunt just days before a hunt. That’s not what I do. I believe our videos relay that there’s far more preparation involved. I do appreciate the feedback and hope you can also understand where I’m coming from.

Solid video guys, thanks for sharing the tactics
I like using bankline to tie on trail cams , a thick strap gives them away, use a Canadian jam knot
Have 7 points may have to cash them in next year. Used to have some private to hunt but was sold so gonna have to make the public land journey
😂😂 that coyote listens better than my neighbors 3 dogs combined.
😂
Nice one great video

Agreed when its available! This tree was pretty bare with leaves or debris to imitate that sound.
@HeartlandBowhunter For sure, yeah, I just started watching ya, so you probably already know some of those things. Great film man

How come I never saw a video where the hunter only wounds the buck, and never finds it?

Maybe 3 or 4! 🤷🏻♂️
Do you rattle with gloves on or off? Hard to tell at the 8:53.
Just depends. Preferably with gloves!
What garmin watch is Shawn wearing?
Garmin Fenix…maybe the 4 but could be the 5.
If you want to challenge how mentally tough you are, don't use cameras. And a added benefit is you won't have anxiety about someone stealing them.
What broadhead do you use?
This was the NAP hell razor but using the G5 MegaMeat now and love the hole, penetration and blood trail it leaves.
