  • If you've been considering getting OneWheel, OneWheel Plus, or OneWheel Plus XR then this video is for you. I was super excited to get my own OneWheel + XR. I used it for several hours the day I got it. I got in over my head and rode it longer than I should have that first day. Here is my experience from unboxing and the first ride, to after the crash. I also installed a carbon fender on it before I crashed it. Consider watching this before you buy a OneWheel Pint or OneWheel+ XR.

I’m 57. I watched a lot of videos and researched what to do and what not to do while waiting for my Onewheel. After reading about all the mishaps, I gained respect for the board and it’s limitations. I wear full safety gear and don’t go for speed records. I enjoy just cruising and carving. I haven’t had a spill yet. I’ve owned my board for a month and a half now.

I got hurt in the beginning too, I’m 60. Lucky, no ACL tear, cracked bone in my knee. Could not wait to try again!! Got back on two months ago, learned from the ground up, on grass. Stayed on the grass until I could do laps, and dismount by jumping off. Two months later, and almost 300 miles.......loving it. To date 12.3 mph is my high speed. I’m not willing to go faster then I am willing to fall. It takes time to learn. Btw-they make padded shorts, I never leave home without them.

Speed is your friend when starting to get going. Slow speeds are vulnerable for wobbles but once moving then it becomes easier. Just remember to look where you want to go and avoid looking down. Thanks for sharing your story. I’m in a similar situation now. 63 years old and 107 miles on my pint. It is addicting but have had three nasty nose dives that has quelled my enthusiasm. All three I blame my disrespect for the board. Uphill in the wrong mode, eye off the road and didn’t see a small speed bump, and very low battery while carving have bruised me up pretty bad. All while wearing palm guards, helmet, and elbow pads. I’m pretty banged up after the last fall, same hip bruising as you and sore shoulder. No doctor visit yet. Just can’t come to selling though. In a state of indecision.

At 200lbs, and with low battery ( less than 30% and critical under 20%...I use an Apple watch for data info) I believe much caution needs to be taken to make sure the board can keep us upright, paying attention to the foot stance on the board, not leaning forward, etc to prevent a dive forward. I'm 57 and have about 15 miles on my OW on several rides over 2 weeks. I certainly understand where you're coming from. Only problem I've had is the dismount. After several mishaps I just gently hop off with both feet, no problem. I will add that flat bottom shoes like Vans made a big difference. I only go about 6 miles an hour carving a little. Wondering what mode you were in? If you were still on the first beginner modes (Sequoia, Cruz) those are sensitive to exceeding the speed limiter and definitely will nose dive if you exceed it. I changed mines to Mission and sometimes Delirium after a week since researching and finding out a lot of accidents were people exceeding the thresholds of the 2 beginners modes. I’m glad you recovered and thanks for the honest video.

I nosedived on day 4. No warning at 12mph, it just slammed the nose to pavement and flung me 20 feet forward. Displaced and minor fracture of the left radial head (elbow injury) and broken finger, sore back and sore left rib cage. Going to see a specialist tomorrow. It seems the issue and a big problem of the onewheel would be it’s unpredictable sudden stops, lack to no push back. They (Onewheel) say there is push back to warn you but reading many many many other testimony’s , it is rapidly becoming obvious that this safety mechanism clearly is a fail. My vacuum cleaner has better safety bells and whistles and is 31 years old!!!. I did order fangs, not the little cheap ones but large wheels from a company in PA. I’m still riding very slow and cautious with a broken elbow because, i am stubborn and let’s face it , actual is awesome to ride, i love it, but the safety nosedive issue is clearly causing serious injury’s and putting the Onewheel in question, not to forget the stress and concern families and loved ones have to endure. I can only assume many young men working at Onewheel lack maturity, experience and importance towards a safety culture . This will probably be the downfall of Onewheel (cross my fingers this will not be the case).

"I can only assume many young men working at Onewheel lack maturity, experience, and importance towards a safety culture." You know what they say, assuming makes an ASS out of U and ME. Please don't blame user error on the company and their products without any kind of actual evidence. Future Motion takes great effort to stress the necessity of safety equipment for ALL riders. Board sports are dangerous; it's a risk you take as a consumer to step on the board and ride.

I am you right now but I am 54 a bit nervous with my idea to buy a OW. Black Friday and a price reduction made me pull the trigger this year. I will say in June I bought the Mten3 Electric Unicycle only to sell it realizing it wasn't for me. I mean I was able to finally ride it but mounting and dismounting could ONLY be done for me by holding a fence. And so I sold it, and so here we go again trying a OW for more money.
I am sticking with grass first or Astroturf before I graduate to concrete like I did with the EUC. Mounting and dismounting on a OW should be a whole lot better?, only time will tell....
PS .... I am definitely NOT A SPEED DEMON SO I am really hoping not to fall and hurt myself?

    • @HodgeHub
      @HodgeHub  3 роки тому

Well, from my experience, I thought that the OW was a fabulous machine! My advice would be to start slow, and wear protective gear. I have heard that some people start on softer areas as well; so, I'm sure that could help with some landings! :-) Once you get the hang of it, it is VERY easy to get to going way to fast, so be careful, and watch out for "push back". I wish you the best of luck with it! They are a lot of fun for sure!

You should try an EUC. For one - they are way safer. You are aiming forward and if you have to bail you are in the best position to run it off. The way power is delivered feels very natural. I tried the Pint and felt the tire was too narrow (lots of wobbles) and the stance not wide enough. Trying to ride up hill put that nose way too close to the ground. What you will get with an EUC that you won't get with a bike or Jeep is a strong sense of balance, and that is probably one of the most important skills to retain (or embrace) for someone at your age.

Indeed. I think that the eskate probably would be safer. I don't trust the OneWheel XR after it nose-dived on me. I did NOT ignore pushback as some has said in the comments. I did experience push-back a few times, but I backed off when I did, and had none of it around when I crashed. I wasn't even going that fast when I had the wreck. Just cruising along rather mellowly.

If ya didn't know how fast you were going, you probably pushed the speed to the limit and nosedived. From the damage you sustained looks like you were going alot faster than 12-13. Hope you decide to give it another shot eventually. They are amazing machines. If you do, go with a Pint, its cheaper and you can feel the pushback (speed limiter) much more.

June 2019 A dog off leash attempted to herd me and my XR off the bike path. I went down broke 7 ribs and suffered a concussion. I ride EUCs and know how to fall, and so even though I do not recall the accident clearly (there was a nosedive and I fell backwards) I assume I could have handled it better. Fast forward a year and I am back on the Onewheel, hyper sensitive to the subtle pushback on my XR. It will not be harsh, once you feel it - react to it...Riding through pushback = fail, period... I am 58 and loving the experience and have switched from Mission to Delirium and feel that the board has “tightened up” a bit and suits my carving style perfectly. Float on my friends!

I am a petite 6'1", 255lbs so if I get too excited and push down on a foot pad it just gets driven into the pavement. I will ride along as my wife is taking her walk. She was rounding a neighborhood drainage pond on a path that I don't like to ride on. I was on the street across the pond from her and she scared up a dozen or more geese and sent them flying over top of me. In my excitement to escape the drop zone as they flew over I pushed the foot pad too hard and was thrown onto my left side onto the pavement. I was doing less than 5mph+/-, so speed was not a factor. 8ve got well over 4000 km on my xr... don't blame the board for your limited experience, majority of crashes are user error... actually ALL crashes are user error, you made the decision to ride it.. you didn't take your time, you didn't learn how the board reacts at low speed, you did not practice in a controlled environment. Crashing is always the user's error regardless of "why"

Dude you are old and fat like me . It takes loger to heal. You should have kept at it. One wreck and you quit. If you would have wrecked your bike would you have sold it? Her is what you do, buy a nother one. Get some better protective gear and have some fun. The more fun the more likely you are to get hert . Thanks for sharing I am definitely getting one now.

Your wreck could have came from ignoring the push back too.

I did experience push back on some rides, but not the one that I crashed on.

I recked mine the first day having it. I was going 16mph. I got bruised and sprained my toe. I still have mine and ride it everyday, but more power to for knowing your self.
