I have been sewing for 50 years (!) and this is the best tutorial. Really helped me understand how to draft a pattern. If you are having trouble following, watch it again and do it step by step, stopping the video while you complete each step. I have never tried to draft a pattern before, except by tracing an old garment I have cut apart, but I found this very helpful if I work along with her. Thank you!
I’ve bought books to learn to draft…it took her 4min to show me what I couldn’t grasp with all those books! Everything!! You are an amazing teacher! Please do more! Pants and skirt blocks too pleaaaaaaaase!
Thank you so much for your kind words. Here's pants ;) I put it off for a long time because they're persnickety, but I did make it. ua-cam.com/video/IENUh8XVXCw/v-deo.html
Hi! I love your videos. I do still have problems with the collar. I take the neck measurement and divide it by four...but it is too big in the front, especially for a Peter Pan collar for example. Any ideas?
I’ve been sewing for over 24 years. I’ve always on wanted to sew for my Barbies, but was always too intimidated to do so. But this really made a lot of sense to me.
I am able to learn so much easier from your pattern making videos (for dolls), than I am able to learn from human-sized ones! You are very clear and helpful
Ah, thank you!! I'm really glad my videos are useful. I always thought human pattern drafting would be easier because it's bigger, but personally, I think it's much more complicated making something full-sized!
As a beginner with pattern drafting, this was so easy to follow and very well explained. I was a little confused with the neckline measurements since I’m making it for barbies and I wasn’t sure which measurement you mentioned would match, but I think I figured it out. Thank you so much!
Oh my! This is a complete pattern making course and you give it free - you have made my day, my week and more! I have new FID dolls, one male and one female, but there are so little patterns around for them as yet. They both will now have a summer set coming up thanks to you. This is a wonderful solution that can be applied to all of my dolls with these principles! Thank you so very much!
For viewers who may be struggling to keep up, I recommend watching this on a computer. There's an option on the desktop version of UA-cam that lets you slow down videos. Hope this helps :) I recently finished my one-billionth attempt at creating a pattern for my doll based entirely off of trial and error and it fits pretty well and looks decent, but only for casual tees. I have to try this method! I want to be able to make very nice clothes for my dolls I think this will really help me. Now I'm itching to sew and design clothes!
Great idea! You can slow it down on the mobile app too. Press the gear in the top corner of the video, and then press "playback speed" toward the bottom.
I hate math, but I love this video so much. It’s so clear, and you explain it perfectly. I’m trying this tonight. Thank you so much !!! Definitely subscribing .
Mystic Kids Lillian! I recently bought one of these lovely girls off Facebook and am waiting (impatiently... lol) for her to get here. Should be home tomorrow!
I haven't tried it yet but if this works, and it seems it will (my mom was looking over my shoulder and despite not speaking English she realised you're making a sleeve far earlier than I did :P) - then you are a genius in simplicity.
I've assembled a few different types of t-shirts in videos so far! There's the style with no closure: ua-cam.com/video/unu91ucV-yQ/v-deo.html And a style that uses a rear closure so you're guaranteed not to have to remove a doll's head to put it on: ua-cam.com/video/8qhnJ_RQUcs/v-deo.html Hope that helps!

THIS IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS, or stroke victems! I'm just trying to give my 15" Halloween skeleton door decoration a better jacket. The factory gave him 'scarecrow' attire. Not appropriate. My loved ones will be dressed better.
So that's how you measure for a sleeve... I did a complete guessing work when I came up with my patterns. I'm planning on doing some videos like this to show how I came up with my patterns for net year line up of videos...but your method seems really easy. I use 1/4 inch allowance too.
I'm definitely curious how you ended up doing it! As long as it works, I'm not sure there is a wrong way to do it, you know? Different things work better for different people, so it's good to have options. ^^
Thank you so much! I am new to sewing and this tutorial is so fabulous! Can you please tell me if you have a follow-up video to this one to actually sew with this drafted pattern? Do I simply trace this pattern on a cloth and cut it? Then how/what do I sew?
Yup, once you have your pattern, it's time to pick fabric, trace and cut! How the shirt goes together depends on whether or not you choose to leave an opening in the back, which is helpful for very small dolls. You can see how to sew a shirt with an open back here: ua-cam.com/video/8qhnJ_RQUcs/v-deo.html And you can see how to sew one with no opening here: ua-cam.com/video/unu91ucV-yQ/v-deo.html There will be some variances because every pattern is slightly different, but the basics are always the same. :) Hope that helps!
Aw, don't feel bad! I was actually stunned at how much research I had to do to learn to make something so basic. It's like they teach you everything else under the sun before they show you how to make a simple shirt. Crazy! Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Yes! The very idea of figuring out a jeans pattern all on my own makes me want to curl up in a ball under a blanket, then reach for my wallet and buy something someone else went through the pain of making lol. But I don't want jeans to be the only thing that can defeat me!
I always struggle with sleeves and this video was very helpful. question: How do you calculate the depth of the armhole? I have watched the video several times and I keep missing that! Thank you!
Of course! They're common terms in the ball-jointed doll hobby but I know people new to the community may not be familiar with them, and they're definitely not known outside that part of the hobby :) SD is typically used to refer to 60-70cm tall dolls that are roughly 1/3 scale. MSD is around 40-45cm and roughly 1/4 scale, but usually more childlike in proportions. And YoSD is 20-30cm, roughly 1/6 human size, but much more like toddlers in the way most of them are built. It can help to think of SD as adult sizing, MSD as youth, and YoSD as baby or toddler sizing.
She talks a little fast but if you play the video again you get it. She's good. I learned how to sew as a child. learning to make pattern is cool. Thanks.
Very useful tip to make doll shirt. Thanks for the great video. I will try to make one following your instruction but I'm not sure if my math may correct or not. 😊
Thanks so much for this tutorial! It is really good! I must be a slow listener. I took the speed down as low as it could go watching on my smart TV and the speech is still so quick. Ah! The phone slows it down more!
this is really great! I think I would be lazy and just cut out the first half and the second half at once by folding the paper (I would probably use graph paper too as I have no idea what a French curve is and I think that would make the curved bits easier). Thanks for doing all the work for us as usual and I'm fairly sure even I can't mess this up because, as always, you explained it really well! I love your pattern videos because, once you have made it for a particular doll, you have it and can change the original for other items of clothing.
Hi, this video is amazing! ❤ I do have a question though, I want to make a dress for my crocheted doll and she doesn't really have designated shoulders. With my measurements, the shoulder length would be way smaller than the neck one and now I'm confused how to do this since every thing would be kind of the other way around than in your tutorial. Do you by any chance know how help me with that? 😅
Believe me, it's not easy for me either :) I actually suffer from mild dyscalculia, so making patterns is always a bit of a challenge since it relies on so many numbers. There are other ways to do it though, such as the tape method, and I'll be doing more videos on that in the future. Maybe something like that will work better for you too!
Yes, that would be great, if you could do a video to show the tape method. For me it's the same way as for skybluespike above............I really like the video, but I am lost as soon as you start speaking in numbers.............the video is really fast as well, and for someone like me, who has NO idea whatsoever on how to make a pattern, it's too fast to follow. I have been thinking for the longest time, that there must be some easier way to do this..............But anyway, I like watching your videos!:)
Ah, yeah... It's really hard to strike a balance between quick enough to be watchable and informative enough to be digestible! I have the tape method on my list of videos for the new year though, so I'll try to move it up the list and see if I can get to it sooner. ^^
Brilliant! I was hoping to make some clothes with a neighbor’s daughter. She has an 18” American Girl doll (“My Doll” version). Are there any standard measurements for this doll?
American Girl dolls are a little unusual, but I've found using the standards for 1:3 are usually the closest for them. They might still need a little adjustment, but it'll get you in the right neighborhood!
Hi hi, also to add to my question about the armsighs and sleeves, in order to get what I have for the back and front pieces of the hoodie, I put my paper pattern on the back of Mowgli and drew a line right exactly where his shoulder seam is and did the same for the front piece. And walaa, a difference in shoulder length coming up the back and then up the front. The funny part, is that when he's sideways to me and I'm looking at his shoulder seam, it appears even right in the middle of his shoulder. I'm baffled.
Hi Dear Beth, It's me Sheila again and I'm still working on drafting a pattern for a hoodie (jacket style) for my plush Mowgli doll. I'm having some trouble with the back piece having longer shoulder area than the front piece shoulder area. I have to draft my own patterns by hand and decided that because I'm going off of inspiration from this video, to just follow along with how you talk about drafting the sleeve, front piece and back piece. Is it okay if the shoulder area ends up longer on the back piece than on the front piece? Or should I extend the front shoulder area to the same length as the back shoulder area?
What an incredible guide! I think these look right! This is my first sewing tutorial haha :,-) Silly question: what do I do with these pattens after they are cut out? Do I cut two of the front/back/arms and sew them together? Do you have/know of a tutorial that provides next steps?
That's pretty much it--shirts like these are very straightforward. I have a video about sewing a shirt pattern here that might help: ua-cam.com/video/8qhnJ_RQUcs/v-deo.html
hi, this is really helpful! thank you for making this! :-) I'm still watching it to try to understand each step better, and its a very straightforward tutorial, so thanks for that! :D (I'm not so good at math either, so I'm going to try to take it slow when doing this.) ;v; quick question, sorry if this is a silly question, but I've been wondering this for a while now...does this technique also work for smaller dolls? (such as lati yellow, obitsu11, pukifee, nendoroid dolls, etc...) I'm guessing the smaller the doll, the more difficult it is to make patterns and sew clothes, since small clothes can be hard to make, but...maybe I'm wrong? or maybe it just depends on the type of doll and the person's personal preference for small/big clothes? if you have any ideas/thoughts on this, that would be really helpful! thanks! :-)
Hi Beth, I'm still working on drafting a pattern for Mowgli's hoodie and I'm wondering how much longer should the cuff be than the wrist part of the sleeve when the sleeve is folded in half (because it's just my paper pattern)?
Yes you can. For soft creatures, I recommend drawing your pattern on paper towels so you can easily fit it to the bear to see if adjustments need to be made!
hi! does this method apply to all dolls or just the type you have in the video. this may be a stupid question but nevetheless :) I have a miniland doll and want to sew sth fot her :)
Great video. I’m just wondering about the sleeve hole and the extension you do for you pukifee. I have a Doll Leaves 1/4 boy who is very straight torso-ed and he needs the extension, but I’m worried that 1.5cm is too much. It looks really long. For a doll that isn’t very curvy in the bust, should there be less than 1.5cm for an extension or should it be that long anyway? Thanks so much for the helpful video.
You're right that it does sometimes look really off, especially on smaller dolls. The depth can certainly be reduced if you feel it's too much, though, this tutorial should really just serve as basic guidelines! One thing you can do is draft your pattern on a paper towel, because then it's soft and flexible enough that you can fit the pattern directly to your doll as you're drawing, without cutting it out, and make any necessary adjustments based on how it fits. :)
@@LomisPlayground Thanks so much. Took me a little bit to see your reply, because it went into junk mail. Yay, technology! Anyway, I made it a little shorter on that line and then made up the pattern into a sweater for my Doll Leaves boy. It totally fits and looks great! Your tutorial is wonderfully helpful. Thank you!
Hi i just found your channel and subscribed :) as i'm trying to figure out how to make doll clothes patterns, at the moment i'm struggling with a Blythe doll dress design, arm hole size and sleeves shape and size etc, being a complete novice at sewing and designing/pattern making, anyway as soon as you started dividing the measurements, i, like others have commented, got confused so I've watched the beginning of the video a few times now to try and figure out why you divided and why by half and by 4 etc and how i replicate that when making patterns, i may be stupid but I think i understand it now, correct me if i'm wrong but you divide it by the size of the pattern part your drawing, like if your drawing half of the back part you divide it by 4, i may sound stupid but i'm just trying to break it down so i can understand it and thought if i post it it may help someone else like me, figure it out too. great channel by the way and apart from me being totally clueless about maths, you make it easy to follow and learn from.
You're definitely not stupid! :) It took me a really long time to learn how to do any of this, partly because I'm dyscalculic so numbers are NOT my friends. Anyway, yes, you're totally right! You divide by 4 to create a piece that will go around a quarter of the body, and divide by 2 when it goes around half the body. Typically you try to simplify pieces in the way that will make them most uniform, which is why you only draw half the back piece, for example. Cutting it on a folded piece of fabric ensures that the arm holes will be exactly the same shape and size, where if you tried to draw it as a pattern piece that would go across the whole back, they might not end up even. I'm happy to try to answer any other questions if you have them. I know pattern drafting isn't very friendly to beginners!
Thank you I haven't had a chance to try what I've since learned about pattern sizing/making again yet, ill try and post a picture on your Instagram when i eventually finish it :) and i also love the angle you film your videos it makes it clear to see what your doing making it easier to follow.
I'm assuming you mean the pink one? Mine was a freebie I got with an order of craft supplies, but as far as I know you can find them on lots of sewing supply sites by searching for retractable measuring tapes. :D
Do you have anything for making pants or leggings and the like? Like to properly measure the hip and stuff? I am super ridiculously new doll clothing Making and I'm looking for as much as vices I can get
I do! There's one for leggings here: ua-cam.com/video/lbcsRyJLAgE/v-deo.html And one for a more advanced pants block here: ua-cam.com/video/IENUh8XVXCw/v-deo.html
You could make it fitted by doing the pattern up normally and then cutting out a copy made from paper towels or another soft, flexible material like that. Then you can pull in the sides and pin them and trim them to the new fit. Be sure to leave room for the seam allowance! But then you'll have a great close-fitting pattern.
I'm not sure you'll still see this, but I have a question about the sleeve cap. You use the sleeve width diagonally to create the width of the sleeve cap, but that means the sleeve width ends up being shorter than the original measurement (so the actual sleeve width is shorter than 4 cm in your video). Have you had any problems with this while sewing the pattern?
I can't recall it ever being an issue--I think it's because when you add the curve to the cap, it adds a little extra length back in. It could possibly cause issues for human-sized patterns, I think, but it's never been a problem with any of my dolls!
I got so confused at 4:05 because I decided to make mine a crop top my curve is different maybe? I'm not sure first time hearing of a french curve but now I feel like I need one ASAP edit- I've followed twice and I've come up with two very different patterns 🙃 I've never fully appreciated how complicated making clothes was
Very useful , lovely video .. Plz make a tutorial for American doll, and Baby alive also ...Thanku so ....Oooo much in advance .... U r super genius ....

Dollectable Dreams I don’t know if you already found it, but I think this might be it ua-cam.com/video/59NfwlouHw8/v-deo.html
This is an amazing tutorial. I wish I had found it sooner :)
Great! Hopefully this will help me adapt for my 50cm doll... thanks!
God bless you for this video. it's so useful 👍👍👍 Looking forward to the other vids 😊
Thanks so much!
You've done good with your work. I followed ur steps but I made errors with the measuring so back to the drawing board 😓😭
Thank you for sharing your talent master❤️❤️❤️❤️
How can I make clothes for a teddy bear and Draw a pattern for it? 🙏
This has been super helpful thank you so much. Do you have a video on making shorts or pants🥰🥰🥰
Coming soon! I'm actually editing a video for it right now.
I ignored math homework for this but
Ha, and then I made you do math to draft a pattern!
This is so inspiring!!! Thank you!!
Wow! Very good video. Thank you!
Really cool
What an incredible guide! I think these look right! This is my first sewing tutorial haha :,-) Silly question: what do I do with these pattens after they are cut out? Do I cut two of the front/back/arms and sew them together? Do you have/know of a tutorial that provides next steps?
That's pretty much it--shirts like these are very straightforward. I have a video about sewing a shirt pattern here that might help: ua-cam.com/video/8qhnJ_RQUcs/v-deo.html
That helped! Thank you again so much :-)
Wonderful lesson!
This is excellent! Thank you so much for this tutorial. :)
hi, this is really helpful! thank you for making this! :-) I'm still watching it to try to understand each step better, and its a very straightforward tutorial, so thanks for that! :D (I'm not so good at math either, so I'm going to try to take it slow when doing this.) ;v;
quick question, sorry if this is a silly question, but I've been wondering this for a while now...does this technique also work for smaller dolls? (such as lati yellow, obitsu11, pukifee, nendoroid dolls, etc...)
I'm guessing the smaller the doll, the more difficult it is to make patterns and sew clothes, since small clothes can be hard to make, but...maybe I'm wrong? or maybe it just depends on the type of doll and the person's personal preference for small/big clothes? if you have any ideas/thoughts on this, that would be really helpful! thanks! :-)
Hi Beth, I'm still working on drafting a pattern for Mowgli's hoodie and I'm wondering how much longer should the cuff be than the wrist part of the sleeve when the sleeve is folded in half (because it's just my paper pattern)?
I have a doll that's an unusual size and difficult to buy clothes for: a Granado Titan. I'm going to try this method and see what I can make. Thanks!
I sure hope it works for you!
Can I apply this for making clothes for a teddy bear? If so, what advice and tips could you give? Thanks in advance
Yes you can. For soft creatures, I recommend drawing your pattern on paper towels so you can easily fit it to the bear to see if adjustments need to be made!
Muito obrigada em compartilhar. Seu vídeo é exatamente o que eu procurava.😊
I wish you could make a video on how to apply this method to villitunes.
Fantastic tutorial! I managed to produce wearable shirt on second try with it!
Yay! I'm glad it worked for you!
Please, make more tutorials like that! (if you want of course) They are super useful.
hi I'm 9 and I never sewed before so thank you
May I repost this video to Weibo? Thank you very much.
It is so sweet how you warned people about doll nudity🥰
Excellent
hi! does this method apply to all dolls or just the type you have in the video. this may be a stupid question but nevetheless :) I have a miniland doll and want to sew sth fot her :)
It will work for most dolls as long as they don't have an extremely stylized body shape.
Thank you!
Wow really glad I watched this thankyou so much 🌍👍🇦🇺
Can u make a video on measurements . that would be helpful what is one quarter of chest measure ?
Can you make one dress using those please
Thanks this video helped a lot
Great job Lomi thanks sweetie pie 🥧
Long sleeve shirts next? Thanks.
excellent!
What’s that measuring tape of yours called and where did you get yours from? I have been trying to search for one like that for years now 🥺
I'm assuming you mean the pink one? Mine was a freebie I got with an order of craft supplies, but as far as I know you can find them on lots of sewing supply sites by searching for retractable measuring tapes. :D
Do you have anything for making pants or leggings and the like? Like to properly measure the hip and stuff? I am super ridiculously new doll clothing Making and I'm looking for as much as vices I can get
I do! There's one for leggings here: ua-cam.com/video/lbcsRyJLAgE/v-deo.html
And one for a more advanced pants block here: ua-cam.com/video/IENUh8XVXCw/v-deo.html
Would this be a good way to make a more fitted pattern to? Looking to do a swing style dress.
A directory of simple to advanced tutorials might be helpful especialy if it tells which r associated with the other portions of a garment or outfit.
@@LomisPlayground thank you!
I got so confused at 4:05 because I decided to make mine a crop top my curve is different maybe? I'm not sure first time hearing of a french curve but now I feel like I need one ASAP
edit- I've followed twice and I've come up with two very different patterns
🙃 I've never fully appreciated how complicated making clothes was
Very useful , lovely video ..
Plz make a tutorial for American doll, and Baby alive also ...Thanku so ....Oooo much in advance ....
U r super genius ....
