Toriyama was in a really unique position to watch GT. He got to see his characters in a story he had nothing to do with. That alone must be one hell of a way to watch GT

Well the movies are the same thing. He had nothing to do with them either or much of the anime, contrary to what people think. The anime is just a marketing adaption to sell more merchandise. The manga was his only vision.

He had a bit to say about The Bardock special, which he didn't write. I wish he had left it alone, and not ruined it by turning Goku's parents into sappy Superman's parents clones, decades later. He's been pulling a George Lucas, these days.
I hope someone writes an Akira Toriyama biography in the future. His work has touched so many people's lives

To be 100% honest, GT isn’t as bad as people may remember it to be, it’s got some great moments, fights, ideas. And some serious consequences (especially with the dragonball) and I have to say that it’s finale was one of the saddest moment I’ve ever seen in dragonball

GT is terrible, and that was universally known within the fandom, until UA-camrs began hyping up, cashing in on "muh nostalgia". The only good things from GT were the designs and ideas that were executed badly.
@@jacobharris5894 The ending had a really bad build up, because the final arc was just terrible. And it ended as a rehashing of The Boo ending, with Goku out of nowhere just gathering a Genki Dama. Very contrived.
GT is so charming, it grows on me every time i watch it, its just really fun and inventive and the stakes are actually high
Considering he didn't really wanna do the work, there were honestly some pretty cool designs from that era.
I'm actually not all that surprised to be honest. I somewhat doubt that he watched the entire series in full to have a full opinion on it, he was probably just happy that people still cared enough about Dragon Ball and want to see it continue, only this time he didn't have to deal with a weekly schedule.

I actually loved most of GT. I recently got done rewatching it in Japanese. The first arc is one of my favorites. It's so fun, reminds me a lot of Tori's early writing. It does stumble in a couple of places, but overall the pros outweigh the cons.
Baby arc is a lot more like later DB. Still good, but a few things just don't make sense. Regardless, also good.
Super 17... Jeez. I really didn't like this one as much. Not much I can/want to say about it.
Shadow Dragons... I think it's alright, but stumbles in A LOT more places than the Baby arc. Kinda neutral on it. The ending is top tier, tho.
Oh, and the GT special. It's great.
The S17 arc was mediocre in quality but it's shortness makes up for it

GT isn't bad like it's made out to be, it mostly just has some parts of the story that seem to drag for longer than they should

I pretty certain that the Granola the Survivor arc has taken ideas from GT, with Granolah being reminiscent of Baby and the Cereal Dragon Balls sharing some traits and colors with the Black Star Dragon balls.
Goku blacks a baby knock off tbh. “takes over a saiyan to commit mass genocide and then becomes the thing they hate (great ape/monster zamasu) in the end “ that is a direct copy of baby from gt. Even copied the pink ki and new hair color concept. Both use the dragonball in their plans,both only want “their” race to be left in existence. Both are racists,vengeful people out for their own justice that corrupted them.

Super has stolen ideas from not only previous Dragonball works but also fan dragon ball works.
They've certainly ripped off Dragon Multiverse and Absalon multiple times. And honestly, I can't respect that.

You know, some people complain why Goku had been transformed into a child, but I think it's a pretty good idea. To emphasize Goku's maturity up to any intense point, and to up the quality (emotionally) of the ending.
I'm really glad you made this, really gave insight on the opinion Toriyama had on GT, something I really don't hear a lot about lol. Hopefully maybe in the future he'll make an official DB timeline of sorts to finally clear up the "canon" of DB if Yukon's what I mean.
Canon means “official continuity “. DBZ officially has multiple canons. Gt is canon tot he DBZ anime continuity by toei. And supers anime is canon to Kai. Supers manga is canon to toriyamas manga. They’re All canon,just different canons. Like how James Bond actors are all their own canons. Ya know?

I just wished something like a guide to watch ALL of DB existed since I’m not a fan of just glaring at a series’s faults rather than its merits just because of something as silly as canon

This makes me wonder: “How does Toyotaro feel about Dragon Ball AF?” He left off on a cliffhanger because he began to work on Super’s manga I believe although, I could be wrong. I wonder if he has made any references/callbacks to it in Super’s manga 🤔
Your 100% right. and the zamasu/goku black thing is based right off an AF story arc-while things are "changed" all of the core elements and set up are there and run as if nothing had changed as well. If I didn't know better from obvious factual info, I'd have thought the golden frieza/ressurection F story came from it too, cause it'd have fit into af or gt all the same. Honestly curious to see if the moro arc in the current manga has any relation to af, wouldn't be suprised if it did. If they bring in the evil shenrons, there is an AF story that wrote them much more of a threat (each one) and more destructive, I think off the namekian dragon balls, and it's been discussed what if this happened with the "super dragon balls" so who knows if we will see that. Whenever they decided to reignite Super (or end up calling it SuperS) again, not with a fighterz sequel film or anymore bad animation I hope (lots of the TOP fights showed strong improvement and by the zamasu arc things were at least serviceable).
Toyotaro sometimes references his AF panels in Super. Vegeta turning Blue in chapter 5 is an homage to Goku flashing SSJ5 while sparring with Pikkon. And yeah, Black and Zamasu are so eerily similar to Xicor and West Kaioshin that it's impossible they *weren't* an inspiration. In fact, the Black Arc wasn't even Toriyama's idea at first: he was approached (by whom, I forget) and requested to bring back Future Trunks because he's so popular, and so Toriyama wrote the draft for the arc so Toei and Toyotaro could put their own spins on the presentation of that outline. I'm certain he got the idea from Toyo's AF, whether it was his own idea to lift that story or Toyo's nudging.

This immensely pleases me as someone whose favorite anime of all time is GT!

I bought the series set of DBGT in the spring of 20' for about $20 and started watching it about two weeks ago. I was hesitant to watch b/c I thought it was going be terrible. So far it's alright. The outer space search for the dragonballs brings back memories of the adventures of Goku and Bulma from DB. Traveling through the universe meeting different races of people of different worlds gives me DB vibes. While the sound track isn't as great as the Kukuchi music; I do enjoy some of the different composer(s) music over the American tracks. Bringing back the Saiyan tails and Oozaru forms is more referencing of DB and early Z episodes. SS4 is such an amazing menacing looking form. I haven't watched all of this yet in its entirety, but in clips over the years. I'm on episode 26 now and what amazes me the most about GT is the consistency of the art work!!! I can barely tell who the animators are b/c the artwork is so similar. Uchiyama's work still stands out. Lol! And I can tell when I'm viewing the studio Seigasha episodes with their style of the human anatomy models, the debris and lighting effects. But for the most part GT's art blends in together well. There's hardly any eye sore off model, weird and awful looking drawings. GT so far has maintained a above average to high level of consistent art work! The DB, DBZ and Super animes has been up and down so much in art quality. GT has done it the best. The presentation of the art work offsets some of the subpar material/woes(power scaling, Pan's whining, Goku being a child the entire series,the irrelevance of Piccolo and Gohan) that GT may have for me. The main reason I can't watch DB Super is b/c of the terribly drawn characters.
Gt has the best plot,it’s a bit too saiyan focused but so was z. I mean what did piccolo or anyone not a saiyan even do in z? What did even vegeta or piccolo do? Killed a saiyaman and some frieza goons? Piccolos 2/3 big fights are in weaker forms of villains to stall for goku to heal,than he’s a gag character/ babysitter by buu arc. All of GT’s faults are just stuff that z did first tbh. I wish the non saiyans got more to do,but if you think about it,z only had them as “filler” til goku did the actual shit. :/ only original ball balances the cast right imho.

@@MrB-bg7qe If you're talking about general artwork in an episode, there's definitely a lot of nice work scattered throughout, especially with Yamamuro's episodes. The art style itself though I don't find as appealing as Z's, especially with Nakatsuru's move to rounder faces. Still, it's fine for the most part :)
It seems like he was pretty indifferent with GT, so long as he didn't do much work he was pretty much fine with GT doing it's own thing.

Toriyama also basically said that it's up to the individual viewer if GT is canon or not, to except as the true ending.
GT and Super make the powers seem weaker... What i mean is, remember when a simple energy blast could destroy an entire city? Nowadays they do so much less damage, although the characters are supposedly "10's or even 100's of times stronger" than in Z... It's like they no longer fear accidentally destroyng the planet anymore after Battle of Gods, they go all out now, specially when they went up against Broly...

That's one of the woes with watching GT. The power scaling is off and the characters are nerfed in strength for plot purposes. I'm currently watching the series now. It's actually alright.
It’s called ki control. Mahon vegeta final explosion was stronger then roshi BUT Toshiba kamehameha destroyed the moon,friezas death ball destroyed planet vegeta,but making vegeta kamikze? Just a football field size crater. Ki control my friend. Only issue either has is when gokus god ki was destroying planets in universe 7 as he fought beerus. That was silly and out of character/lore breaking. Besides buuhan scream was gonna destroy the universe so that feat wasn’t really needed. Buu saga onwards is already casual universe busting!

I always looked at spinoffs or continuations based off someones original idea as fun. Like Toriyama, whose only been vocal if it hasn't been pleased him, is in the same boat as Stan Lee, Todd Mcfarlene and even HR Giger; where their creations are runaway hits with fans and kinda carry a life on their own!

I, personally, don't classify things as non-canon and canon in Dragon Ball, I just go by the Timeline system. Akira Toriyama has said that every movie occurs in its own dimension, so it isn't hard to believe that the same is set for GT. Though, things like DBM, AF, and Kakumei (Spelling), ie fan mangas, are the only things I'd classify as not canon, since the official company did not produce it.

I grew out of the series, I could never get into both GT and Supa. I just stopped watching it after the Buu Saga. I did watch a tiny bit of both GT and Supa but I felt like it was repeating the same plot line over and over again.
The Earth is in trouble and it is up to Goku and Vegeta to save the day. After the Buu Saga it got old really quickly.

Watched through all of GT a while back and thought it was boring and hard to get through with forgettable villains, fight scenes that felt like nothing was happening on screen, and interesting ideas that weren't fleshed out well. Then UA-cam hyped up the show and told me it was better than Super, the proper ending to Z, etc. etc. etc. So I decided I would be open minded and commit to a full rewatch. After another full experience, I discovered that it was boring and hard to get through with forgettable villains, fight scenes that felt like nothing was happening on screen, and interesting ideas that weren't fleshed out well. Nostalgia brain worms are real in this community.

Well why wouldn't he find himself on good terms with the series? If he hated it, or was indifferent to it, like almost every DBS fan insists, he wouldn't allow the concepts of GT to be added in the games or spinoff mangas, long after it's airing, or give Ssj4 an advanced form.
He clearly approves of it and is fond of the series, as one should expect.
In fairness, the video game side of Dragon Ball is an area he never had and still has very little to do with, with the exception of doing a couple of character designs occasionally. Ideas like Super Saiyan 4 Limit Breaker likewise come from Toei staff, not himself.

IF he hated it, sure. But he probably is completely indifferent to it, which means he simply doesn't care if GT is used or not. Heck, one could argue that he stopped caring when he was still working on Z even, because lots of DBS bullshit that offend many people today were already present in Buu saga. And yes, I doubt he gives a shit about LOTS of other DB products too, like games, movies or whatever, for a long time now. He just let giant companies take care of it.
I love the series, but it feels to me that he probably responds to "approval seeking" people with "uhn? Those western guys wanna make a live-action DBZ movie? Sure, whatever" without even reading the script or anything.

Dragon Ball Gt overall was nowhere as bad as people say and yes I know it was not as good as it could have been, it still had some great moments, good fights, great concepts and ideas, not to mention the great villain that Baby was and had one of the best , coolest looking and well designed transformations in Dragon Ball in Super Saiyan Four and even Golden Great ape that is much more true to the Saiyan Race than any of the other Super Saiyan God forms and the Super Saiyan forms prior and the way in which Super Saiyan 4 was introduced was very well done, that it's no wonder that Toriyama liked it. Great video bro, loving the content.

It's finally nice to know Toriyama's Opinion on DBGT. Not a Fan nor Fanboy's perspective, a Creator's Perspective which I find to be refreshing n' needed despite being very minimal on his take. Sounds like it was both Mix & somewhat Positive for him to say... I don't think he'll like how American's messed with the Characterizations & Plotline Dialogue to it though since that is what made DBGT not good. Original Format DBGT is better than Americanized DBGT which I'm pretty sure most DB Fans HATE, luckily I rewatched it in it's Native Language with English Subtitles which makes the experience way better in terms of Characterizations & Plotline Dialogue while still having it's own fair n' share of issues.
I've watched it in english and still didn't think it was that bad but i've heard the japanese version adda more to it so i'll watch it in japanese again.
@@humanman9920 I didn't have too much of an issue with the English Dub as a Pre-Teen/Kid because I didn't know too much about Dialogue/Script during the time. I rewatched the English Dub and put the English Subtitles (which is the Translation of the Japanese Langague) to see if they were similar at least but sadly I found out the Dialogue & Translations were BEYOND DIFFERENT, can't believe they goofed on the Year Gap. In other words: Voice Acting, good. Dialogue Change, Bad.

The first half,well first FEW episodes really is on the same par as “great saiyaman/high school gohan” saga. Z also had the same “weak” portion as well.

He liked it, he designed most of the characters (that includes moustache Vegeta), loved the idea of Goku been a kid again, and overall, though it was a worthy follow-up to his story.
I still find it funny how people think he is involved with Super, when he himself said he is writting the movies, while the Super manga is written by Toyotaro, not him.
Same here. I remember really enjoying GT when I watched it. It wasn't perfect and suffered from a few things here and there, but I can say the same about Z, especially because of how long it was. GT's brevity was somewhat of a blessing. However, GT-haters and the media really make the show seem flat-out awful, and that's far from the truth. I actively enjoyed GT, but it's obvious they did not. They did the same thing with Legend of Korra, despite me really liking it. I wish they'd either shut up or tone it down... or both.
if he didn't like GT, Super wouldn't have been so similar to it. yes, I know there was more to Super's creative process and all that, but Akira was a bit more hands-on with it
I've been bingewatching GT and I have to say, the only part I didn't care for was the space travel stuff which unfortunately is the first third of the show (theres like 10 episodes that are just awkward as hell). Wouldn't be surprised if that's what people base the quality of the show off of.
I feel once Baby gets introduced tho the quality of the show gets so much better and the pacing is better too. It's not at all to the quality of Z or original by any means but it's indeed worthy content for the franchise and I like hearing that Toriyama was supportive of it.

I do want Toriyama or Toyotara to introduce a consequence for the dragon ball, like GT with the 7 evil shenrons, DBS should take the route with the dragon balls being over used and now they have to face the consequence of an evil force inside the dragon ball.
Also the idea with SSJ4 should definitely be in DBS, as in Goku and Vegeta should combine there UI or UE with a new super saiyan form which would be SSJ4, and then they may stand a chance against the new stronger Frieza and even Beerus perhaps.
I'm glad to know that toriyama likes gt it gives me hope that he won't erase it completely

Honestly I hold gt as being equal to super.both have some very good highs but some questionable lows.honestly the problems I have with one mirror the other for the most part.some timesetting someone new continue a story or add to it breathes fresh air into something that could otherwise feel repetitive.SSJ4 is one of the coolest designs possible.Baby Vegeta paid Goku and Vegeta original roles as enemies with the most respect by not undoing Vegeta's character development by making him evil and showing how bulma is a threat in her own right.the shadow dragons were a great way to give the entirety of dragon ball consequences for their over uses.its funny that super goes so far out of its way to show you it won't be gt,which is sad but potential great.
I watched a couple of episodes and I'm mostly in the "indifferent" camp
I mean, you cannot really dislike a sequel series to your manga so much when you got involved so many years later with someone who does plotlines fit for GT (Golden Frieza and Zamasu/Goku Black) from there "AF" material or your love for Frieza (ressurection f). Not to mention countless power ups, plot points, etc. borrowed from GT as well. He also didn't have to draw Goku having his tail back and assume oozaru and super saiyan 4, or draw anything in the detail like the backgrounds of the planet tuffle when baby makes a wish on the black star dragon balls. So I think he's got tons of reasons not to diss it.
The only problem I had with gt was the time skip between buu saga and GT events was too far. I don’t understand the point behind these huge time skips.

Why would he say he hates it? What's to gain? They still sell GT merchandise of some sort somewhere in the world. If people learn he hates it, its popularity will drastically decrease.

Gt only really has 2 good arcs which are the baby arc and the shadow dragon saga. I think the English OST soured my take on fr. Every five seconds there's a pointless guitar rift. Rewatching it with JP OST made me think it's ok but i kinda prefer the later arcs of super imo.
Though GT never got rid of some more intrinsic problems of DB series, it certainly tried to expand the scope, while also deepening the existent lore about sayians, androids, and dragon balls themselves. Initial couple episodes and overall decision to both revert Goku to child (and as a character) and then *keep* him that way certainly are the biggest questionmarks.
That being said it is certainly a lot better than what we got later on. And it's ironically sad that Toryama talked about lack of motivation back even back then, seeing how much of a conveyor and merch production DB has been turned into. Capitalism dont sleep - series got a fanbase, it cant be allowed to end. Gotta pump those transformations out.

There is litteraly no depth in gt's writing. Goku does not develop as a character and neither do any of the other characters. Gt is the litteral definition of: bad guy shows up, beat bad guy.

I'm not a huge fan of GT. it has a lot of very bad moments, from story to the actual animation. I will say though for the most part the art is very well done and I absolutely love the villains in GT. they're actually better overall than what we got in Z imo except for Frieza as he's just awesome. I especially love the entirety of the baby saga and the whole story behind why he wants revenge in the first place. Also ice, nova and omega shenron are amazing villains as well. I'm glad GT exists but I don't care to watch it again.

While Super is horrible, and I genuinely believe that Super's fans either aren't bright, don't remember Z or disable their brains as they watch it, I still think GT is weak. I mean, even on an objective level, there were many choices that made no sense because of lack of consistency within them.
That being said, GT at least actually LOOKS AND SOUNDS LIKE DRAGON BALL. It's mostly thanks to the fact it was released right after Z, but it doesn't matter as we judge it for what it is.
It also didn't kill Goku's character like Super did.
@@turbotrup96once again I am agreeing with you. GT has a lot of flaws, and I for sure think a lot of things should’ve been different, but the look, feel, and sound are pure iconic dragon ball. I LOVE the visuals and art style of GT, it looks so good, detailed, distinctive and not at all generic like Super does. Super, despite being made 20 years after GT ended, looks flat, shiny, plastic, with disgusting and unfashionable character designs who dress like SHIT compared to the trendy 90s outfits of GT. Everything about Super sucks, especially Goku as a character, who’s become a brainless weetard with a one track mind. I hate Super so much dude.
