Wide grip exercises were understood by Silver era bodybuilders to increase deltoid size. Early pictures of Larry Scott show relatively narrow shoulders, while his later Mr. Olympia physique suggested a longer clavicle and wider acromion bone. This illusion was caused by increased deltoid size, itself the result of wide-grip exercises and, to a degree, chemicals.

Add in the special supps...yeah, Howarth had the look. Gironda always said he was against steroid usage, but his star pupils--Scott, Howarth, and a few others--they were all juicing. Don admitted it. Hey I recently watched your 36 eggs a day equal steroids vid Sind thought it was really good but I’m wondering would this have the same nagging effects as steroids for a teen u mentioned eggs have test in then so wouldn’t it be the same as roofs since u are taking in exogenous testosterone and wouldn’t your body stop producing test naturally so when u get off the cycle ur test levels drop to way lower then ever before. I’m 16 and would want to try this but am worried about if there are the same negative side effects as taking light cycle of roids and it makes sense that it would since both steroids and 36eggs a day give body high amounts of exogenous test. Can u please clear this up
I get stuck on this, im actually a fighter but still want a good physique as well as speed as well as power. Im 6'4 tall, very lean and have nearly 50inch chest and 39 inch waist but guessing that's my frame because i don't have the pregnant belly. I guess measurements are perspective in general. I actually didn't compare myself til I watched UA-cam with the lockdown with the virus. I've always lifted, did dumbbell chest with 65kgs in each hand, proper form etc, didn't know that's pretty heavy I guess. Nice to hear lol
Bones don't grow after an age. If you pull them, you gonna have joint & tendon pain. Can't change bone structure. Maybe with D3, K2 mk7 and Growth Hormone you will be taller & wider but not guaranteed, and it would work better before 20 years old.
That is true.Muscles can add width up to a point..and you can expand shoulder girdle and ribcage but not so much. And very little past 30..unless you use the 'roids.

Howorth was not as broad as depicted here. Layered sweaters, padding. Also wide grip exercise does not make clavicle bones grow wider. Howorth had wide clavicles before he started bodybuilding.
Don Howorth WAS that wide. Incredible to look at. I was friends with him in the early 2000’s when we trained at World’s Gym in Burbank. He was working at that time to get his old measurements back. However, it also WAS genetic with him. He told me he was going through old photos of his parents and his dad had the wide shoulders and thinner legs like Don. He was a real gentleman as well. I asked him once if he was as wide as Reeves (whom he knew) and he said he thought Reeves was wider.
That picture does look a bit odd. Look carefully at his hands, they look absolutely tiny ( like a kids hands, totally disproportionate) in relation to the sleeves, and the arms look very baggy. I also remember Arnold talking about a lot of bodybuilders wearing clothing with padded shoulders etc. think it was in his education of a bodybuilder book. Not saying Don wasn't wide ! Just my observations of this particular picture. Don't know maybe it's just the angle ? And this picture
Don Howorth (whose ears were nearly as wide as his lats) showed his lat width on an episode of the Wild Wild West: ua-cam.com/video/RgZ_VRHIs8E/v-deo.html
@@Marktellerman As far as I know this is no Photoshop or 6 sweater padding nonsense, all these millennials will say anything to feel better about themselves
Golden Era Bookworm , yes I know it’s real. That’s why I’m depressed. I’m 55, in ok shape but that physique is an inspiration isn’t it. Incredible. Millennials: they think size everywhere is the only thing that matters. All they’ll end up as is fat.
@@Marktellerman mate, you could do a lot at your age. At your age, it's too late to do the milk and squat method, or the 5 x 5. But you can achieve great shape and symmetry. Use Vince Gironda's methods. Believe me, they work. I use them, I'm 42 this year, and I'm packing on muscle faster than the guys on droids (because they also plateau). It's funny, the moment they plateau, they reach for the needle and believe more drugs is the answer. They have no idea how to train. Start off by using Vince's methods. Email me goldenerabookworm@gmail.com if you want further advice
I don't find that picture impressive at all. Don Howorth in the picture is clearly wearing an oversized sweater not a fitted one. you can tell just by how the material is baggy around the arms and shoulders; making him appear wider.
You can't widen your structure, Don and Steve have long clavicles, Larry Scott was narrow for example no matter how many wide grip pull ups are you doing you're gonna stay narrow if you are to begin with
Incorrect ! You can especially if you train in young age. Don was gymnast, Reevs and Zane also start train early. I train rowing at age of 12 for 6 years always with one big row on left side. My body transform in way that left shoulder is long and lat was big and right side is normal due to tension of the row on one side more than another. My left clavicles is 3 centimetres longer than right.
but used but not abused drug enhancements The amounts of drugs used in Howorth's era was far less and men aspired to be more symmetrical and proportional.
Johnny Blaze you wouldn’t know if he would would abuse plus his idol was Steve reeves who was against steroids, now if we talk about Arnold that’s a different story
ASAP Gwuapo his idol could have been Jesus himself doesn’t change the fact that he abused the drugs that he had at the time. So he would most definitely abuse today’s
Johnny Blaze you wouldn’t know and just cause someone uses steroids doesn’t mean you’re going to look good it makes people look like shit and he didn’t abuse drugs.
Interesting.. An interview with Don Howarth, who is recommending wide grip pulldowns/ chins ( pulldowns would be another "kinda" of chin) for long clavicles. Mmmmm I wonder if this really made his shoulders wide, especially when you reach maturity. Clavicles.... lengthening (bone) once they've set??! Maybe. But I don't think so Don mentioned people just being this way (genetics). And in other places said it was his genetics, as did Larry Scott. This seems to be more realistic. Though, if you're still in your young growth stage, it "may" be possible to to so influence width to some degree. The part of Reeves doing wide grip deadlifting to get wide is interesting likewise. Thinking that this wide grip stuff is working lats more than clavicle bone!!
This may sound silly. But there is something about visualisation that transformz your physique... GEB also made a video called "Visualisation idea of a Silver Era Bodybuilder" Check that out. It's hard to explain... You know some people cure cancer like magic... Like it never existed.... Power of belief, law of Attraction... Etc
Not entirely true! Most people have bad posture even when it comes to shoulders.. their shoulders tend to be further inside its girdle than it should be thus giving them narrower shoulders (I've tried stertching exercises for a while and gained 5cm in reach) + the bigger your shoulders the wider you'll get + there are surgeries being done to change bone structure
Once your bones plates have sealed off you wont be able widen your shoulder girdle. This old school belief is nonsense. The old boy probably had wide shoulders to start with and developed his delts.
@@ranmasaotome2354 During the interview Howorth admits much of the width development is genetic. Lateral end of the clavical fuses at 19 - 20 years. Medial end listed as fusing off at 19 - 26 years of age. I would think that 26 yo would be rare. All these widening exercises were performed by Arnold and Franco, and neither had wide frames. Both did wide chins and lat pulldowns.
@@xanthromera yeah you're not far off I would say even 26 is really pushing it. But I think my clavicles really did broaden between 17 and 21, I turned 26 december last and i dont think my clavicles have changed at all. I didnt start to seriously train until I was like 23. Training young helps but a lot of guys these days are roiding at age 17-18 and all the converted estradiol from anabolic steroids is probably sealing their growth plates earlier than they should.
@@ranmasaotome2354 I'm not convinced anything other than being put on a medievil rack will stretch anything. I would think shoulder width is 99% genetically predetermined. I have ordinary skeletal width but people tell me I have wide shoulders.. I definitely don't, just developed medial delts which create an illusion. As for gear use, I'm horrifed at the dosages 20 - 25 year old guys are doing. Biggest cycle I ever did was 500mg in my late 30's. I'm 57 now and still jacked and natty except for Tongkat Ali and some other herbal shit. I train with a 21 year old who is now running 1200mgs of mixed compounds.. why oh why..

Can u please clear this up
LOL! Watch my playlist on 36 eggs, learn how to do it RIGHT. It's only for 6-8 weeks
Stay natty and keep training..its a long game.36 eggs natty enough but you have youth..best source of gh and test out there.
I think that rows produce the wide lats, not about going wide.
How can you say this when Dorian has the widest back of all time and he never used a wide grip.
Dorian is an advocate of pullovers or the machine that mimics pullovers. Wide grips are tough on the shoulders for many of us.
Frank Zane that makes sense, so you stretch the structure not just grow the muscle. Thanks
@Barnacle Boy Exactly.... Wide Grip Works The Sub-Scapular Muscles and Shoulder Girdle Not Necessarily Lats
Don howorth=great Genetik and diananol!

Barn door wide shoulders not door barn wide shoulders 😅. No troll here😁.
specific exercise? Dianabol- Press.
Howorth was blessed with nice wide shoulder structure,if exercises did it for him al bodybuilders would have shoulders that wide.
LOL! Layered sweaters and padding...I guess you know how to pull that look off. Howorth was WIDE
@@GoldenEraBookworm --- Bookworm, you could improve your channel if you stopped being so naive.
He's not buff.He's fluffy! Joking
Gigasigma
Don Howorth (whose ears were nearly as wide as his lats) showed his lat width on an episode of the Wild Wild West: ua-cam.com/video/RgZ_VRHIs8E/v-deo.html
Didn't this guy wear like 6 jumpers in that photo to enhance his width lol?
Nope
If that was true, I’d feel a little better.
I felt the same about the sweater pic. It appears he’s wearing a baggy sweater to hide his real proportions
I met. him ,he was extremely wide
Old photos show Steve in oversize clothes like that as well, Don was trying to emulate him.
Bought a fuzzy sweater?
You can't widen your structure, Don and Steve have long clavicles, Larry Scott was narrow for example no matter how many wide grip pull ups are you doing you're gonna stay narrow if you are to begin with
Incorrect ! You can especially if you train in young age. Don was gymnast, Reevs and Zane also start train early. I train rowing at age of 12 for 6 years always with one big row on left side. My body transform in way that left shoulder is long and lat was big and right side is normal due to tension of the row on one side more than another. My left clavicles is 3 centimetres longer than right.
@@anaheld1208 interesting!
This man talks about steroids like he wouldn’t have used them if they were available. He used what was available.
but used but not abused drug enhancements The amounts of drugs used in Howorth's era was far less and men aspired to be more symmetrical and proportional.
Russ if he could he would have used them. Don’t kid yourself
I call BS. Shoulder width is determined by genetics. Period.
Lol wrong!
No.. I disagree
@@rajeshwaran108 i like your thinking. i can't find the video though
Wide grip pull ups though wont help lats. Dorian knows what he is talking about lats
And Don knows nothing about that ?
Tried? He was wider...
Once your bones plates have sealed off you wont be able widen your shoulder girdle. This old school belief is nonsense. The old boy probably had wide shoulders to start with and developed his delts.
@@randydill409 Fascinating.
The shoulder girdles are one of the last bones to fuse though.
Y’all really think pullovers can expand your ribs and things like reeves deadlift can expand shoulder width?
The most impressive thing is that Dawg has hands like a 12 y/o girl.
Arnold is numero uno
Always
Steve Reeves era is Gold Era not silver. Arnold era is steroid or chemical era. For me Don look better on early photos than Arnold because he look more natural even both were on juice.
This channel doesn't get the subscribers it deserves... maybe its only for the few 😂😂
is that the guy who kept going to ukrain on 90 day fiance
This is BS, clavicle lengthening surgery is the only true thing that can really add width.
