First time I have seen big rigs - and extra-long ones at that - on a ferry. Never even thought about that being done. Very interesting trip on this one.
I’ve done quite a few ferry rides now. I’ve taken the one in Tadoussac Quebec often, it can even be seen in some of my other videos. I’ve taken the ferry to Wolf Island Ontario, the ferry across the St Lawrence at Trous Pistols Quebec, the ferry to Vancouver Island British Columbia and most notably the ferry to Newfoundland which is an 8 hour boat ride. Always an adventure!
Hello Doug. Great job as always. I remember you saying just how much you enjoyed that amount of trailer cheat during a turn. 4 wheelers were showing their ass on Jefferson. When you pulled the trailer out of that hole turning left, that would have gotten my attention pretty darn quick. I dislike having trailers at that angle immensely. Probably the amount of time under a beam. At least you didn't have to execute a MI Left. Have a good day.
I wasn’t particularly worried about the hole because of the type of load I had. Light weight with low center of gravity. If it was a 50 ton electrical transformer it would’ve been a more dramatic situation!

Thanks for the video. Sadly, the truck ferry service has closed down so truckers carrying hazmat or oversized loads have to drive the very long way around. At least until the new bridge opens since it’s supposed to carry hazmat loads.
The Gordie Howe Bridge, in the distance at 12:30 is specially being built with Hazmat and other dangerous cargo in mind. It's also at 29:00, and a few times after that. The 401 will end at Gordie, which joins I-75 in Michigan. Any spillage can be contained. They need to go all the way to the Blue Water Bridge at Sarnia and Port Huron, which is a good two hours, on a good day. Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit Windsor tunnel have been banned. The Tunnel, for obvious reasons. The Ambassador Bridge, while it's been going under a major overhaul, still has issues, so they can't risk a spill. Any spill, which cannot be contained, would go right into the Detroit River and then eventually to Niagara Falls and then the Atlantic. Sure they can stop it, but why risk a major spill if you can't stop it, or it's a heavier substance that sinks and runs along the base of the river. That would be an ecological disaster that makes the Exxon Valdes look tame. I believe that the Ferry shut down due to safety concerns and the age of the barges. With the Gordie Howe Bridge opening in about a couple years, barring delays, it's just not worth it to spend millions on new barges 2 years, or so, of operation. The Gordie, a term for us Detroit Red Wings fans, will have containment abilities, minimizing the risks to the community, and especially the Detroit River.

Fascinating to see not only how the turns work for such a load, but also seeing how the truck ferry across the Detroit River worked was neat. I should ask, what are those codes in the video descriptions? And is there any special software you have to use to plan these routes? They have all kinds of turns I wouldn't have ever expected (and I know they're for obstructions!)

I have been long at 128' but that was with a 26" tractor 53' Refer+18'dolly+ 48" Van in Alaska (yes I was an IRT) and the swing was pretty close to the same. Oh what fun those days were. I miss them!

Really neat to see these load transports in video. A question I have is why wasn't the truss transported on edge vertically thus eliminating the overhangs on the sides?
Mr Banana did not mention it but it appears that the truss was about 12' wide / tall or more. At the length it was you will never find a trailer that is not going to put it as least 2.5' or 3' high resulting in a load 15' tall. Lot easier to transport a 12' wide load then a 15' tall one due to bridges.
I thought about this also. There are trailers that have a drop in the very center for moving concrete/prefab walls, large panes of glass, etc which would have added about 15' of length to the trailer and but has the advantage of centering the load. At that point, the added length may have been more of an issue than the width. Unfortunately I don't believe they make stretch versions of them anyway, so it's like knowing how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie roll pop.
This truck carries 255 gallons of fuel and with a heavy load I need to fill it up every day. It can be tricky to find parking with these big loads. We get good and planning our stops in advance and being able to judge a parking by looking at the Google earth view to see if the parking is large enough.
interesting ferry ride! i know the bridge in windsor is very restrictive for oversized and hazardous goods. and one of the bridges in sarnia is closed for repairs, so very restrictive too
Love how everyone else is mostly courteous especially other truckers. I was about to get up to a T - intersection and Noticed a semi truck. Soon as I seen 10ft of his trailer I knew he had a long load. So I stopped in my lane plenty far back. As soon as the big rig made 80% of his corner the idiot behind me tried going around. He ended up having to back up behind me to let the trucker through. I wish more truckers were courteous too. On my lunch break an idiot semi trucker sped up through an intersection and didnt even try to slow down and move over to let an ambulance past blaring lights and sirens. Another story I was fallowing a semi truck home from work, he noticed me tailing him for about 7-10 minutes. He actually pulled over in a stop sign intersection to let me pass him.
Just like everything else there are good and bad in this business also! I believe if more people watched these videos they would have a better understanding of why we do what we do and just might understand from our perspective

That 122 feet is a little bit longer than what we have in Finland without any special permits which 34.5 meters or ~113 feet but that's on a multiple articulation points, not just a single semi-trailer. I regularly pull a High Capacity Transport with two sea container trailers and a dolly in between those two trailers. Max weight is 76 tonnes (metric) so hauling two 40' or two 45' containers is no problem usually, unless it's winter of course and that doesn't even reach the max length because we have cabover trucks. So far it is doing the job very well. The automatics have come a long way. I’d say now it’s just personal preference if you prefer manual or automatic.

The truth is I myself stopped asking “why” a long time ago. Too much in this business doesn’t make sense. Most of the time when we take a different route it’s to avoid road construction or low bridges (which wasn’t the case with this load obviously)

i did 9, 15,3 wide 125 long, 3yrs ago from Baton Rouge La. to Indian town Fl. they had sent 3 loads before me they said it took them guys 4 days to get there, and if i made it there faster i could have the rest of the loads, i would load the evening before pull out next mourning 2.5 days only cause florida i could only run from 9 am to 3 pm, had 2 escorts and LA had 2 state troopersto the ms. line
A lot of times it’s to avoid road work on the interstate. Most of the time they will deny a permit to pass through construction zones. Or with a high load we can be routed off to avoid low bridges which obviously wasn’t the case with this load.
Are most stretch flatbeds spring ride or air ride? Does it matter which it is? I'm guessing based on the weight of the load at 20k lbs, your trailer didn't need to be a tri axle, correct? I'm assuming that's just what your company has, but it isn't necessary for this load. I hope someone chimes in. Thx

I don't know if it was the way the camera was, but that left turn onto Jefferson rd that trailer looked like it was tilted nothing you could do but I cringed a little lol good job that was not a box trailer lol. I really enjoy your videos keep up the great work.
It was no optical illusion! There was a big hole and that’s why I was going SLOW! There was no real danger for this load, a light load with low center of gravity. A top heavy load would’ve been a completely different story!
That ferry is supposed to shutdown in the near future, I think when the new bridge is completed. I’m surprised Windsor police didn’t have to escort you to the ferry. Normally they want money for escorts. Great video love watching the big stuff. Be safe.

I noticed the polite traffic when the white pickup stayed far enough back for your right turn at the stop sign, stopping 400 feet short of the sign when he saw you. To bad you didn't get routed through Derby Indiana, you could have poked a few youtubers there: DirtPerfect, Logger Wade*, NYAMillenial, Captain Kleeman**, DOTBear Woodworks, JasonWorksALot, AaronBummTMBTS, FarmerChris, MRSDirtPerfect, WildRose and Kleeman's second about river tugs/barges.. yup, all those channels are based around that small town and usually are in each others vids. *Wade Etienne of Swamp Loggers TV show **UA-cam Yacht channel
Another great video! I used to haul 60' -70' steel on a 40'-60' trombone [extendable] in the UK in the '70's. Proportionally it was similar to your trailer and tractor on our roads and tailswing was always a problem.
There has to be a very good reason why you crossed at Detroit. The route vie New York, Cleveland, Cincinnati then to Glendale looks more stright forward?
It’s actually shorter to go through Detroit. And the route we had in Ontario was all highway. New York and Pennsylvania would’ve routed us on a mess of back roads with tight turns.

I'm slightly impressed they let you film their new site. Some of those big OEMs do NOT like cameras anywhere near their business even when they're just breaking ground, never mind driving through the jobsite.
Not many years ago, when I worked in the construction industry erecting warehouses, we used to fabricate these trusses on site! We would get lengths of I-beam or H-beam, cut it, drill it, erect it and drink a lot of beer at the end of the day!
Good question but 2 reasons. First would be the height. These trusses were 12 feet wide so vertically that would be about 16 feet on the trailer. Way too high! Second would be weight. With more than one piece we can not get an overweight permit which means we can’t exceed 80,000 lbs total and this heavy haul truck and 3 axle trombone trailer are heavy! Believe me if the customer was able to put more than one per truck they would!!!

Our trucks plus these extendible trailers are heavy. We would’ve been over 80,000 and can’t get overweight permit for multiple pieces
Doug, why does it seem that they route you on two lane roads when interstate roads are available?
A lot of times it’s to avoid road work on the interstate. Most of the time they will deny a permit to pass through construction zones.
Or with a high load we can be routed off to avoid low bridges which obviously wasn’t the case with this load.
Are most stretch flatbeds spring ride or air ride? Does it matter which it is?
I'm guessing based on the weight of the load at 20k lbs, your trailer didn't need to be a tri axle, correct?
I'm assuming that's just what your company has, but it isn't necessary for this load.

You are correct. My company has mostly tri axle trailers because they are more versatile but it wasn’t necessary for this load

I don't know if it was the way the camera was, but that left turn onto Jefferson rd that trailer looked like it was tilted nothing you could do but I cringed a little lol good job that was not a box trailer lol. I really enjoy your videos keep up the great work.
It was no optical illusion! There was a big hole and that’s why I was going SLOW! There was no real danger for this load, a light load with low center of gravity. A top heavy load would’ve been a completely different story!
That ferry is supposed to shutdown in the near future, I think when the new bridge is completed. I’m surprised Windsor police didn’t have to escort you to the ferry. Normally they want money for escorts. Great video love watching the big stuff. Be safe.

Where was the ferry you used to cross over what I assume was the Detroit River into Detroit?

I noticed the polite traffic when the white pickup stayed far enough back for your right turn at the stop sign, stopping 400 feet short of the sign when he saw you.

Another great video! I used to haul 60' -70' steel on a 40'-60' trombone [extendable] in the UK in the '70's. Proportionally it was similar to your trailer and tractor on our roads and tailswing was always a problem.
Everything is more condensed in the UK!

The route vie New York, Cleveland, Cincinnati then to Glendale looks more stright forward?
It’s actually shorter to go through Detroit. And the route we had in Ontario was all highway. New York and Pennsylvania would’ve routed us on a mess of back roads with tight turns.

Here in Holland it would be impossible with that length, without steerable.
I go till +- 22 meters on a non steerable , otherwise the secondary roads are almost impossible.

I'm slightly impressed they let you film their new site. Some of those big OEMs do NOT like cameras anywhere near their business even when they're just breaking ground, never mind driving through the jobsite.
Not many years ago, when I worked in the construction industry erecting warehouses, we used to fabricate these trusses on site!
We would get lengths of I-beam or H-beam, cut it, drill it, erect it and drink a lot of beer at the end of the day!
It amazes me that these gigantic buildings are pre fabricated and then put together piece by piece like a puzzle!

Why not have them vertical.. you could transport 3 at a time.
1 in middle, and the other 2 leaning against the middle on both sides.
Good question but 2 reasons.
First would be the height. These trusses were 12 feet wide so vertically that would be about 16 feet on the trailer. Way too high!
Second would be weight. With more than one piece we can not get an overweight permit which means we can’t exceed 80,000 lbs total and this heavy haul truck and 3 axle trombone trailer are heavy! Believe me if the customer was able to put more than one per truck they would!!!
