- Does the Laney Ironheart 60 IRT60H benefit from a boost pedal up front to tighten it up, or not? Let's try that out with my ESP LTD EC-401B Baritone. Let me know in the comments which sound you prefer!

I love the way you demo gear: looped riff, A/B in the mix, A/B isolated. It’s absolutely perfect, thank you!
Held its own great without the boost. Hell, I preferred that thicker drive without the boost as it still made its mark within the mix, but for those looking into having a sharper, tighter attack, a boost certainly does its own thing. Having that said, this is one hell of a beast of an amp, especially in terms of its price point within the used market.
I agree. I wouldn’t boost mine. Great either way tho.
I’ve had a couple different versions of this amp and always felt it worked well with a Boss SD-1.
Just purchased at SD-1 today to add to my Board... Now I'm interested in trying it with my IRT 120
Do you have any sound samples od sd1-boosted IRT? I'm looking for booster for my Ironheart now, and it's hard to find any recomendations.... :) thanks!
These Laney Ironhearts are amazing amp all around. Plus, they are still in an affordable price range. I was using the Laney IRT Studio (Rack) extensively already and still have it in the studio, among others. Great video again, mate.
This is the most interesting video in this series, for me, because it isn’t even close. This amp absolutely needed the boost regardless of the style of metal you’re after. I didn’t love the non-boosted tone.
I'm not usually one for commenting on UA-cam videos much but being a Laney user for over 10 years I'm so glad to see people getting tones like this out of them! Stumbled upon your channel recently dude, really like what you're posting with these Amp videos!
Hey Stephen✌️
I preferred the Amp without boost. The pedal added some bite, but the Amp doesn't need it.
Ive got the 15 watt studio head and love it. Im not in a band currently so i have no need for the new black country customs UK made Ironheart head. But as soon as i need a 60 watt metal head i know what i'll be buying!
Always been really curious about this amp! I think both versions sound good in their own way. For the boost setting I might roll back the highs just a tiny bit and turn up the mids just a tiny bit. Great Review!
Awesome video and playing!
Such an underrated amp! No boost is my pick, but I wouldn't say no to the boosted sound either
Great job 👏 kool riffs man as usual.
Muchas gracias por el contenido!!! 💪💪💪
nice tones there Jon !
Man do I dig your riffin John! Most excellent 🤟👽 either way Boost or No Boost its killer!
I like what the boost did to the treble & upper mids.
I'd love to see you testing an Ada Mp1. Old school preamps!😎
Amazing tones!
I really like the low end growl that the Ironheart makes
I have 2 Laneys the rack mount irt15w studio and the same amp in this vid, and ya I keep my pre boost on 3, to me when it goes higher it has a weird low end flub to it. But I love my Laneys I use a eq in front with a ts9 and it really sounds killer
I’m a big fan about not boosting a back breaker box.
It just has to have a kickass clutch of cascaded 12ax7s going for it.
My favorite such preamp, had been the BK Butler TubeWorks reduced bias twins;
Only time I’d had chewy pick attack, instead of bouncing offa the strings on a JCM800.
Killer vid, killer amp.
Going EMGs right to the Jack, gets shit done.
You done good with that monster! 👏
For me the IRT was always too boxy and dry. Even with the Killswitch Engage settings and a OD808 in front it misses the brutal and mean sounds of a 5150 or a Recto. But man John I want that Baritone. Nice video as always
It is pretty boxy. I think it's got too much hard clipping in the gain staging. So you can't really dial it out. I always much preferred the GH series with an EQ or pedal to make it a little tighter. I don't play brutal stuff tho
Beautiful light🚨
Sounds amazing!
I can diggit, I love this amp.
Too. I got the 120 but inside it has a three pole connector the top and center capped are 120 watts. The center and bottom poles capped are 60 watts. Which is where I run it. Maybe I’ll need the 120 watts someday!!!!
Cool video. Keep Rockin
I always used one of these at band practice, i always used an EHX Soul Food into it with all the settings at noon.
Soul Food is a klon style overdrive.
Awesome vid and really enjoyed your riffs. I have a 120 and love that amp. My one pet peeve w the amp was the inbuilt boost, not a fan so I never have it on. Going to try what you did though by having boost on AND overdrive pedal. I got the Seymour Duncan 805 so I'll give that a go. Once again, cheers!
I have an IRT 120 and I can attest to this method of having the onboard boost on along with an Overdrive. I have the SD 805 and it is my favorite drive with this AMP.... Just set the onboard boost around 1 to 1.5
@@jroc6166 Thanks so much for the tip, just tried it and sounds immense. Cheers!
Laney makes an awesome amp, and I really like my Ironheart 60. From clean to monster gain, I can get just about anything I want (with a little tweaking in post). The REAL question I have is who the hell owns all of those amps in the background? Every time I watch one of your videos I just shake my head in amazement!
Nice playing and nice video man. This is a pet peeve of mine, but I can clearly hear the compression and EQ, if you're doing the isolated guitar showcase, you should add a completely raw section to the video of the amp / playing to let people know what they're actually hearing when getting into if they choose to be a customer to buying the amp. Also adding different mics or placements of the mic in the room, a close mic, a room mic, ect, and different amp EQ's for the sonic qualities to really hear the amp isolated better. If I sound disrespectful, that's not my intention. I just wish I could see more honest showcasing of things people are interested in owning.
I have had this amp for 5 years now and its a love hate relationship, its a nice amp with great features, I use a ts9 or a precision drive in front for more saturation, the gain is pretty mid gain and when cranked gets very mushy and almost turns into a fuzz
This one really came alive with the boost 🤘
Riff sounds awesome. its very In Flames! I think I like it better with the boost.
I liked the boosted tone more, particularly at this tuning. However, from your past videos, the amp definitely sounds great even without a boost, and would sound even better unboosted if the tuning were a bit higher.
KicKass! To Boost, def....i use the steelpark with the irt ironheart studio15 and the boost wakes up the flavor! thanx
Hello Jon, How much you like the IRT60H reverb? As one can see you are using the Helix reverb right?
big improvement with the boost to an already great tone from the amp
This is a great comparison! You mind sharing how you have the guitar tuned?
Disregard, I'm an idiot. You clearly say drop Ab, lol..
Best tubes for guitar amp
The + Boost has a bit of hi end, has it own place in the mix. Sound huge and full the way i like it. Laney amps are awesome i think that those amps are underrated, it has such great tone and quality
@@iloveitall never had such experiency with it...
@@iloveitall didnt like it at, all, i used to play when i worked in the most uge music store where i live...
@@iloveitall the Ironheart ain’t lacking any low end, especially with the bass knob pulled out
Is it as tight as the DT or nah? This pedal seriously kicks ass!
Also, the ironheart has this weird input clipping sound that happens if you drive it too hard. You can hear it in the iso demonstration. Imo it has to be a design flaw
I saw a few listings for the Laney Tony Iomi model but they were listed for more than the NEW prices when it came out. I mean over 3K dollars high. Stupid crazy.
Jon, are you sure you didn't overload the preamp with too much gain? You are probably aware of the characteristic of this amp of not being able to handle certain amounts of gain. To me it sounds as if some of the crispy treble is lost throughout the first chord and after that it has a bit of under the water kind of quality to the sound. Laney even has a blog post about this issue titled "Lessons In Tone - BOOST". I usually use either the boost or OD, not both. But perhaps you could dial the OD for unity gain to only shape the eq.
the guitar tunning is Drop C?
i'm torn between this and Hughes Kettner Tubemeister 40. Can you revisit that again with extended range guitar?
The IRT60 is more versatile than the Hughes
The rhythm channel has more gain than the lead channel, I boost it with a dirty tree, it’s great
you should try the new blackstar heads !
I might be trying the 6L6 soon!
Sounds fucking killer !
By the way are you using 6L6 or EL34 for this amp ?
6l6
Will you be trying the new ironheart 120?
I would love to
Boost!
These amps need a boost imo, just not enough saturation otherwise
No boost, sounds great on it's own and is already pretty tight. With the boost the IRT looses some of the character/sag and sounds more samey and just like all the other boosted amps.
I like this observation--I feel like 90% of amps gain many of the same characteristics once you boost them. They're much more unique without a boost.
Been messing a bit with Helix Native and there's definitely some truth in this. Different amps don't automatically lose all their uniqueness with a boost up front, but they do tend to sound more alike when boosted. It's a tradeoff between pure tone and clarity in a mix really IMHO.
With boost it sounds cooler at first listening, but then you would get more tired than with unboosted version.
Isn't the answer to always boost?
If you want the guitars to have clarity in a mix, yup!
As usual, we can't tell the difference if it's on or off.
Not to boost. IRT60H has nice juicy crunch on its own, unlike roar by recta
Doesn't need one, would probably use one anyway haha
Bööst
i like the tone of this amp but the build quality was just disgusting imo, sold mine for that reason years ago..but i have GAS right now 😂🤟
Maybe try the IRT SLS. Small, lightweight, good build quality, super loud and sounds great!
@@rk28984 thanks i was thinking about that just looking @ used market right now 🤟🙏
@@Turbo-D My bandmate uses one and it sounds very good. Great for reahearsal, liva and in the studio!
@@rk28984 thanks for that again man i just must have it right now😂👍
