- Sonic R came out for the Sega Saturn in 1997 (and later on PC and the Nintendo Gamecube through the Sonic Gems Collection) to mixed reception, and since then things have only gotten worse for Sonic R's reputation. But what if I told you that Sonic R is actually kind of underrated?
I mean it's not THAT underrated, it's still kind of a dumpster fire in certain respects. But there are elements of the game that are kind of interesting, and I thought it might make for a good video.
Also if they put a Saturn Sonic skin in Sonic Frontiers like the Mario 64 skin in Mario Odyssey I will pogchamp in real life

The soundtrack is such a jam. And I also enjoy that somewhat masochistic challenge of 100%ing a track in one go. Reactive Factory is too hard to for me.

I agree about the music. Sonic was never good, but the music is usually on point.
I wouldn't say the music "sucks". I love the music of this game, genuine 90's dance vibes that are hard to come across today
Yeah I felt so insulted when he said that. Nostalgia aside, I think the music couldn’t have been more unique and iconic. It’s a great soundtrack. Great video nonetheless.

Both is very good
Riders even has characters running when their boards run out of air, and also has hover skates like Shadow. Between that and the boost, Riders can probably be retooled into a modern boost formula racer pretty cleanly. We know the formula works because of Riders and the boost games, and it has the characters on foot. They could even toss the Babylon Rogues in there using their boards instead of feet.

I remember playing the hell out of R on gems collection as a kid and enjoyed every last second of it.
Same man. I cherish the time playing this game. The levels were such a blast. finding out all the shortcuts collecting the stars man, it was so much fun

Ah, the memories of playing this game for several hours before realising you're supposed to use the L1 and R1 buttons to make sharp turns. They do a really great job of letting you know that important fact

Fun Fact: the same vocal singer for the soundtrack (T.J Davis) also sang some songs for Metropolis Street Racer.
I had the PC version first as a kid (the music didn't work unfortunately), but I always really enjoyed this game, although it was pretty short (although as a kid I sucked enough to make it last much longer). I replayed it quite a lot as a child, later on I got the GEMs collection version and learned that it had that killer soundtrack, to this day its music stays on my playlists.

I feel like the game's soundtrack is the MOST racing game thing about the game, I loved 90s and 00s racing games with those types of vocal soundtracks like MSR and Ridge Racer
I loved this game on my SEGA Saturn. I got so good at it that I would double back to make it harder to win against the AI competitors. I enjoyed zipping past them multiple times as Sonic or Super Sonic. It was a… Sonic Blast!
The Sonic Gems Collection was my first ever very own Game as a Kid back in 2005 so Sonic R along with Sonic CD and Sonic The Fighters has a VERY special place in my Heart 💙💙💙
The upcoming Sonic Superstars has the option to make your own Metal, and it includes parts for a Metal Knuckes, and newcomers Metal Tails and Metal Amy.
I think that game received a bit too much hate.
Its my childhood game, and it even has my favorite character in it.

This game's soundtrack along with the classic trilogy solidified the positive sonic-stereotype (which are very rare) that "No matter how shitty the game itself is - Sonic always have banger music". And I believe it played its role in creating massively vocal OST for Sonic Adventure later with Crush 40 rocking their way into our lives.

Legit I played it with my friends watching in the summer while me and one of y friends were talking about potentially scarlet and Violet legends and one was watching me via parsec playing Sonic R on his screen. Legit unlocked everything in one day and played against him and had a blast. I genuinely did love the game and would play it again.

This game was like the third or fourth sonic game I played behind 3d blast, spinball, and cd. Had no concept of what sonic should play like I just had fuuuun
Now I emulate it on my phone to see how fast I can speedrun it, and I had a run once I started as the plane I was on started to land, and beat well before they let us off

Liked playing this on Sonic Gems Collection as a kid
I loved playing this game on the computer. Could beat it 100% in one sitting, and it was a good time. Only bad part was something was weird with my CD and sound effects only played ONE time and never again for that session. Also no music. No sounds except the menu and the exhaust from Amy and the robots continued lasting.
If they added the sound track with sonic Aventure it be the greatest game

You blast past them as a Sonic so you only see them for a split second but there a main feature in Gammas stages.
Just a tip there is a drift in this game, I didn’t see it in the footage, it makes the game 20% better lol
