    If you'd like to learn more about what, exactly, was broken with Sonic R's lighting engine and how it got fixed, InvisibleUp wrote about the process: invisibleup.neocities.org/art...
    Tutorial:
    Step 1: Install Sonic R. If "install.exe" won't work, try "setup.exe." If neither work, copy all files and folders from the CD and paste them in to a folder somewhere on your computer.
    Step 2: Run the Sonic R Updater. When it asks you for a folder, tell it where you just put the Sonic R files.
    Step 3: When the Sonic R Updater finishes, it will launch the Sonic R Mod Manager. In the Mod Manager, bring up the "Graphics" tab. This is mostly up to your preference, but I'd uncheck "Windowed" and "Force 4:3 Aspect Ratio." In the drop-down menu to the right, select "Native" to set the game to your monitor's resolution. Or, if you want, you can leave these options alone.
    Step 4: I'd also recommend installing one of the sound mods listed above. You only need one, so don't install all three at the same time. Place the mod's folder in your Sonic R mods directory. If you still have the Mod Manager open, you may need to click "Refresh" to get the mod to show up. Check the box next to the mod to enable it, then click "Save."
    Step 5: Launch Sonic R, but head in to the options first to set up your controls if you think you need to. If you're using a controller, I'd set "Action" (Jump) to the A button, "Accel" to the X button, "Camera" to the Y button, "L Brake" to the left bumper, and "R Brake" to the right bumper.
    Step 6: You're done! Play the game!

    If you stop playing Sonic R like a platformer and treat it more like a racer by using the accelerate button to run and bumpers to do sharp turns, it’s actually a really fun game. It just had hardly any levels

      It's not the best racer but yeah you can legit have fun with it as a weird racing game with a couple platformer elements instead of a platformer with a couple racing elements.

      Honestly the reason I feel Sonic R is so fun is because rather than a racing game, it is more of a 3d platformer. This is why I liked it better than other racing games from the era. It was a 3d platforming game disguised as a racer.

    I am unbelievably happy to see a sonic R video in 2019 that talks about it in a sense that isn’t bashing the controls or hating it due to that being the common consensus. I love Sonic R with a passion. This is an absolutely solid video, I’m really glad my friend showed it to me. Great work

Could very much be possible just would need a lot of values double checked to still be playable

    • @FinalLuigi
      @FinalLuigi 4 роки тому +6

      It becomes much easier when you have access to the game's source code, and then do testing to ensure that there are no (or few) timing related snags. M2 was able to port Virtua Racing to the Switch, and also increased the frame limit from 30 to 60 FPS. The main reason why PC ports often have framerate locks is because publishers see PC as a "least concern" platform, and want to cut porting costs to maximize profits, plus they already have free defenders on Steam forums where they continually defend awful ports being released at full price. Source code access is the reason why Mortal Kombat X got "unbusted" on PC by a different developer; if you can save a trainwreck then you can surely improve a game.

    • @sethseth6ify

    • @FinalLuigi
      @FinalLuigi 4 роки тому +2

      @@sethseth6ify If there was netplay in one version of the game, then surely the modders have been able to transplant it. Even though it was rereleased, the base code hasn't changed much so it should be significantly easier than trying to hack in 60fps support.

    • @PeterDCOHanlon
      @PeterDCOHanlon 5 років тому +3

      @@InvisibleUp Ah, that is interesting! Is that caused due to the same reason that certain objects like on the title screen etc appear brighter?

    • @InvisibleUp
      @InvisibleUp 5 років тому +5

      @@PeterDCOHanlon Nah. It's just because the background is black, so when the stage is semi-transparent it looks darker than it would otherwise.
      The issue with the shiny title screen stuff is because it's still using the vertex colors for the Direct3D mode, which are brighter to make up for the lighting engine being wrong. I still need to sit down and figure out how to fix it for the shiny objects, because they're rendered differently than everything else.

    I used to play the hell out of this game on PC as a kid. I always remember it controlling horribly (I used a keyboard, pressed up to move, and never even knew there was a drift, so yikes) and I had a nightmare of a time unlocking everything, so I never really came back to it as an adult. After this video though, my interest peaked and I gave this a try and replayed the updated Sonic R with the racing game controls like you said. It was honestly a whole new experience and I have a brand new appreciation for this game now. It was so surprisingly fun, I just sat there and beat everything and got all the characters and emeralds and stuff. It's like it patched a memory up and now I can come back to this and have fun, which is pretty mind blowing for me. Just wanted to say thanks for sparking peoples interest in this and convincing people to give this clunky old thing a try, you've given me some fond memories to look back on. Nice video man.

    I got Sonic R for the Saturn that Christmas. Honestly having only 5 tracks wasn't unusual for the time. Sega Rally had what, 4? And the 4th one was really hard to unlock, so more like 3. Oh and it only had 3 cars. But it's still a fantastic game.
    Sonic R sometimes gets a bad rap but I love it. The only game that does 3D Sonic properly in my opinion. I never had any issues with the controls, unlike some. Better than the complete lack of control you seem to have in the recent games. And although he ran fast, it wasn't the absurd speeds the new games have. Which is honestly how it should be.

    hey man, loved the video, i just wanted to ask if you remembered like a year or two ago i accidentally started a huge fight in your comments because i said something about how your voice sounded, but then i talked to you on twitter and we worked it out like bros, it was a good day. anyways i just wanted to say your voice sounds great now, i don't know if you're recording it differently or taking hamōn breathing classes or something but just keep doing what you're doing, you sound great, and much love from ya boy zachary C G

    • @BlazeHedgehog
      @BlazeHedgehog  5 років тому +1

      I have a vague memory of that, yeah. I think part of what makes it sound better now is I've learned more about how to master audio, so things like P and S sounds aren't so sharp anymore. Going back and listening to older videos before I learned how to do this is actually kind of painful for me now.

    Fun fact: You can push it further by using your video card control panel if you have one. I used mine and just maxed out everything; AA, texture filtering, etc. UA-cam probably won't like me posting links to screenshots, but I HIGHLY recommend doing this if you can.

    I dabbled with the whole "Making it 60fps" shit and really it was bad, the bots zoomed past while you are still the normal speed and all sound affects are doubled in speed. Its like everything around you is going twice as fast but you. yet again i only worked on it for about a week then stopped because of uni.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 5 років тому

      that is really weird. one would assume that your physics also get doubled alongside the bots.

    Professor Abrasive, the guy who's working on the device that will bypass the Saturn copy protection and allow you to run disc images from the port in the back, called the Satiator, said something to the effect of the Saturn's hardware only allowing certain data throughput speeds, so his device won't speed up load times.
    I imagine this is why Sonic R is hard capped at 30fps, because the hardware couldn't get data fast enough to do any better.

    Since this video has been made, this game has recieved many more mods which might make it outdated. I feel like you should give links to the following mods in the description:
    Sonic R Improvement by Showin
    Metal Knuckles has Green Eyes by L0an47
    and L0an47's Fun Pack (even though some codes are expermiental and only work in specific scenarios)

    • @BlazeHedgehog
      @BlazeHedgehog  11 місяців тому

      I believe the Sonic R Improvement mod had just come out while I was in the process of finishing this up and I didn't include it because I'd rather remain a purist and not get into a whole debate about how to "fix" the game's physics (in part because I don't even think they need to be fixed; there's a reason I have the "it's a Sonic game, just bounce around" line)
