If you stop playing Sonic R like a platformer and treat it more like a racer by using the accelerate button to run and bumpers to do sharp turns, it’s actually a really fun game. It just had hardly any levels
It's not the best racer but yeah you can legit have fun with it as a weird racing game with a couple platformer elements instead of a platformer with a couple racing elements.

I am unbelievably happy to see a sonic R video in 2019 that talks about it in a sense that isn’t bashing the controls or hating it due to that being the common consensus. I love Sonic R with a passion. This is an absolutely solid video, I’m really glad my friend showed it to me. Great work
I used to play the hell out of this game on PC as a kid. I always remember it controlling horribly (I used a keyboard, pressed up to move, and never even knew there was a drift, so yikes) and I had a nightmare of a time unlocking everything, so I never really came back to it as an adult. After this video though, my interest peaked and I gave this a try and replayed the updated Sonic R with the racing game controls like you said. It was honestly a whole new experience and I have a brand new appreciation for this game now. It was so surprisingly fun, I just sat there and beat everything and got all the characters and emeralds and stuff. It's like it patched a memory up and now I can come back to this and have fun, which is pretty mind blowing for me. Just wanted to say thanks for sparking peoples interest in this and convincing people to give this clunky old thing a try, you've given me some fond memories to look back on. Nice video man. Also you have a smooth ass voice.
I remember how my pc couldn't handle it performance wise so it ran a lil slow, and I didn't know this till later when I played it on a better PC I was like HOLY SHIT I CAN'T CONTROL IT IT'S TOO FAST! 😂 The original slower speed honestly helped me play it better.
Yeah. I think a lot of people's gripes with it come from false expectations, but if you just embrace the game for what it is, it's actually really fun. Kinda short, but fun nonetheless.

Excellent video, thanks for doing this. I've always loved Sonic R! Now, I just wish there was a way to restore the Saturn version of Radiant Emerald. You're not kidding with that seizure warning!
Well, the transparency is restored in this mod. It just also has the disco lights still present. I personally enjoy the mix of the two together; disco transparency. That said, it would be a nice feature to be able to turn off the disco light for more authenticity.
Without the transparency on it's like staring into a strobe light because the lighting mod makes the track so much brighter. It's super easy to turn off the strobe effect, though, so I'll look into that.
@@InvisibleUp Ah, that is interesting! Is that caused due to the same reason that certain objects like on the title screen etc appear brighter? Also, that would be cool for people who just want transparency. I myself, as stated above, like them together. Having options is always a good thing~ 😎
@@PeterDCOHanlon Nah. It's just because the background is black, so when the stage is semi-transparent it looks darker than it would otherwise. It becomes much easier when you have access to the game's source code, and then do testing to ensure that there are no (or few) timing related snags. M2 was able to port Virtua Racing to the Switch, and also increased the frame limit from 30 to 60 FPS. The main reason why PC ports often have framerate locks is because publishers see PC as a "least concern" platform, and want to cut porting costs to maximize profits, plus they already have free defenders on Steam forums where they continually defend awful ports being released at full price. I specifically went and bought a PC copy of Sonic R and followed your steps just to play it for the first time. Seeing you said looking at it as a driving game rather than a platformer made me get used to the controls fairly easily. It's a fun little gem. Thanks for the video

Sonic R is awesome and you can’t tell me otherwise. The only complaint I have is that Tails’s flight and max run SFX (same sound) need to be lowered or removed altogether.
thanks for making this video, I remember playing the heck out of this in gems collection on the ps2 back in 2006. Always wanted a modern way to replay it and this is definitivly the way!
I was introduced to Sonic R as a kid. I found it at a used game store we used to have here while looking for games for the Saturn that I purchased (it was 2009 or smth. I thought it looked cooler then the PS3 lol) and I recently came across a PC disc for it which I didn't even know existed. It's going to be great reliving my childhood again!
I clicked on this (from my recommended vids) expecting it to be about gameplay tips, etc--was pleasantly surprised! I've only ever played the GC port, so I had no idea that the lighting was so broken. Great video. Might have to go track down the PC version to try it/the mods out :D
Ahh thank you so much for this video! I've been wanting to replay this game from my past, but was actually wondering what differences there actually were between the different versions (and which is best). Sonic R is a very misunderstood game - it may not be the best, but it has undeniable charm and I love it ♥
I ended up using both the Improved SFX mod and the Sonic 3D Saturn SFX mod (although that resulted in me only getting the bumper sounds from the Better SFX mod)
A user by name of Showin recently released a Sonic R improvement mod that genuinely does a lot to fix many of the issues with the control scheme as well as rebalancing characters. Even has a final boss race added to the game against eggman, I’d recommend you check it out it’s pretty cool, would definitely be a good thing to add to a definitive version to play the game.
I've always wondered if some creative modder could turn Sonic R into its own sort of Sonic game. I don't think we've tried a Sonic game where A moves you forward, but as you've stated about Sonic gameplay in the past, Modern Sonic games have become almost like racing games. In that vein, why not try a Sonic game with racing-style controls?
I got Sonic R for the Saturn that Christmas. Honestly having only 5 tracks wasn't unusual for the time. Sega Rally had what, 4? And the 4th one was really hard to unlock, so more like 3. Oh and it only had 3 cars. But it's still a fantastic game. Sonic R sometimes gets a bad rap but I love it. The only game that does 3D Sonic properly in my opinion. I never had any issues with the controls, unlike some. Better than the complete lack of control you seem to have in the recent games. And although he ran fast, it wasn't the absurd speeds the new games have. Which is honestly how it should be.
Thanks man! I tried to play my copy of Sonic R a couple of years ago but it just didn't work. Apparently it was something about how the game checks the PC's specs using loading times being too quick. Tried some suggestions like changing a line in the code that checks the speed, or playing in a specific dial windowed DirectX sandbox thing, and neither option had great success. But this looks like the answer I was hoping for!
If anyone knows their way around XInput Plus, you can also improve modern XInput controller support for the game, allowing for proper D-pad and analog triggers support.

In other words, if you play as Metal Sonic, Tails Doll, Metal Knuckles or EggRobo, you will be forced to race against Super Sonic. If you don't want to race against Super Sonic, then stick with the default characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Dr. Eggman).
i played the daylights out of this on my 486 laptop. at about 10 to 15 FPS most of the time. lots of fun. glad to know an update is out to make it run on newer computers. thanks
The Xplosive Release also doubles as a CD- say for the first track screeching infernally at you. Honestly thought thank you for this tutorial. I ain't any good at this game but it's fun. (And I'm a smuck for the games music).
i hope that now more people know that, more mods and other stuff can appear in this game. i f@cking love this game, and because i don't own a gamecube/saturn, don't have the ps2 version and the pc version (before watching this video) was unplayble in modern systems. thanks man. btw, sorry for my broken english.
I don't know about you guys, but I loved the shit out of Sonic R when I was a kid even though I played it without the support of CD music. Which is probably not a bad thing since everyone said the music were pretty cheesy. Would still love to play it even today.
hey man, loved the video, i just wanted to ask if you remembered like a year or two ago i accidentally started a huge fight in your comments because i said something about how your voice sounded, but then i talked to you on twitter and we worked it out like bros, it was a good day. anyways i just wanted to say your voice sounds great now, i don't know if you're recording it differently or taking hamōn breathing classes or something but just keep doing what you're doing, you sound great, and much love from ya boy zachary C G
I have a vague memory of that, yeah. I think part of what makes it sound better now is I've learned more about how to master audio, so things like P and S sounds aren't so sharp anymore. Going back and listening to older videos before I learned how to do this is actually kind of painful for me now.
I love your videos! Also, has anyone told you that you sound like a warm, friendly version of Dan vs, or Snott from American Dad? That's actually not an insult, because I love that guy's voice work!
Huh, I didn't know there was a updater for the old Sega PC version...I honestly wish the game was on Steam so that all of this would be slightly quicker and easier...
I remember unlocking Super Sonic. He was by far the best character in the game, and impossible to lose with. So, if you wanted to play more tracks and have some challenge, just don't pick him right? Nope. If you don't pick him, the computer will. And it will destroy you. I thought this was a hilarious problem. I would have been really pissed if it happened in a game I was really attached to though.
I first played the pc version back around 2002 and I didn't even know about the missing lighting effects. I also played it a couple years later on Gems Collection. Great video!
I almost thought this was gonna be a joke video about how different the controls are but I'm really glad I watched this. :) Also if you use a VPN network you can connect via LAN with anyone connected to the exact same network.

I love this game! Though people played Sonic R like a platformer instead of a racing game? I never played it like that. To me it was a racing game with Sonic characters and played it like that. Had a lot of fun unlocking and using Super Sonic. And got introduce to Metal Knuckles and Tails Doll here. A shame Metal Knuckles never appeared again.
I lived my whole life thinking the Gamecube version was how the Saturn version looked but I was wrong, it was the scuffed computer version. I play Sonic R like a racing game because every part of it screams racing, including Amy but not anyone else.

Was the weather effects and time of day of the PC version affected by the PC's internal clock/calandar? or was it just random?
fancy seeing u here
also 11 minutes gang
It was just random. I remember reloading some levels multiple times trying to get the snow to come up.
@@BlazeHedgehog i just changed the weather option from "random" to "snow" in the options lol
I didn't think you were a Sonic fan.
Sonic R is a really fun and underrated spin-off in my opinion
bro i dont even have sonic r i just watched this because I always wanted to see what a better looking sonic r would look like and I'm glad I saw this!
i played the daylights out of this on my 486 laptop. at about 10 to 15 FPS most of the time.
lots of fun. glad to know an update is out to make it run on newer computers. thanks
I was unaware someone got this game working again. This would go well with those new Saturn USB controllers Sega recently started selling!
I love this game. Why do so many people hate it. It’s such a good time to just play, and that soundtrack OOOOOH BABY
Man I was struggling to get this to run and then I remembered your video.
Gog damn, thank you for this man.
The Xplosive Release also doubles as a CD- say for the first track screeching infernally at you.
Honestly thought thank you for this tutorial. I ain't any good at this game but it's fun. (And I'm a smuck for the games music).
i played sonic R on my ps2, and have just now ported the iso files to my pc to play it in my pcsx
its very janky but charming honestly
i hope that now more people know that, more mods and other stuff can appear in this game.
i f@cking love this game, and because i don't own a gamecube/saturn, don't have the ps2 version and the pc version (before watching this video) was unplayble in modern systems.
thanks man.
btw, sorry for my broken english.
I'd love to play this game again. Will look into installing this sometime soon!
I don't know about you guys, but I loved the shit out of Sonic R when I was a kid even though I played it without the support of CD music. Which is probably not a bad thing since everyone said the music were pretty cheesy. Would still love to play it even today.
Thank you for making this video! Trying it right now!
I myself is still proud of my original Sega Saturn copy of sonic R but now I really wanna do this mod to a PC copy
hey man, loved the video, i just wanted to ask if you remembered like a year or two ago i accidentally started a huge fight in your comments because i said something about how your voice sounded, but then i talked to you on twitter and we worked it out like bros, it was a good day. anyways i just wanted to say your voice sounds great now, i don't know if you're recording it differently or taking hamōn breathing classes or something but just keep doing what you're doing, you sound great, and much love from ya boy zachary C G
I have a vague memory of that, yeah. I think part of what makes it sound better now is I've learned more about how to master audio, so things like P and S sounds aren't so sharp anymore. Going back and listening to older videos before I learned how to do this is actually kind of painful for me now.
BlazeHedgehog filtering out the 'plosives! nice as fuck. just keep rocking and then alternately rolling my dude 😎
I love your videos! Also, has anyone told you that you sound like a warm, friendly version of Dan vs, or Snott from American Dad? That's actually not an insult, because I love that guy's voice work!
Most people don't usually add the "warm, friendly" bit.
Awesome. Now if only someone can care enough to mod Asteroids 98 on PC.
1:02 one of the few sonic games that was released 1st in america form my knowlage
This is the only definitive way to play that actually worked 100%
Great video man :)
Thank you so much. I love this game a lot.
Personally, I absolutely love Sonic R.
Might be time to finally let go of that Saturn disc... 💿
Huh, I didn't know there was a updater for the old Sega PC version...I honestly wish the game was on Steam so that all of this would be slightly quicker and easier...
The GameCube version with Sonic gems collection
Also if you use a VPN network you can connect via LAN with anyone connected to the exact same network.
Sonic R is a fun 1 time experience to complete...after that well...its weird for me to ever revisit, after emeralds and tokens is completely barebones and broken
i've never seen that rainbow stage before thats amazing!
You are truly a hero
1:21
WHAT?!?! Is was??!
I unironically played and loved this game and didn't know that.
Honestly Sonic R is a good game..................okay it's not my place to say weather or not it's objectively "Good" but i like it
Sonic R is the perfect example that there's not always a parallel between a game being good and an game being fun
Need a definitive Sonic Heroes vid!!!
