She’s one of the best vocalists of all time.

she wrote/co-wrote 18 of her 19 #1 songs. she is indeed incredible singer and songwriter

@squarcircle2254 She's technically the best, not one of. No other singer has ever attained her skill level in every register with such amazing technique, flawless transitions, writing her own songs, insane vocal agility in every register, RESONANCE, I could go on forever.
@@SquidProQuo80 She’s the goddess of vocal agility and transitions but still not technically the best in every other vocal/musical ability. Not in the lows, not in power, not in resonance, not in belting, or head voice, or vibrato, not in vocal control, volume control etc. She isn’t more technical than Rachel Farrell, and Lisa Fischer could compete with her vocally. The other members of the vocal Trinity and even vocalists like Beyoncé have strengths over Mariah. She doesn’t have everything in the bag.
Beyonce, who’s the goddess of technique, only rivaled by Mariah and Rachel, proved her vocal agility was nearly equal to Mariah’s. I said nearly only because Beyonce’s typical style of singing didn’t require Mariah’s level of complexity.
@@SquidProQuo80 There's definitely better singers in terms of technique, but Mariah is probably the best when it comes to popular mainstream singers.

I just love watching Mariah Carey being respected for all that she has done for us.
The way she sang in the Daydream era is so perfect that it almost bothers me. I rarely revisit it because it's like, so effortlessly perfect that I don't care. Like, who can do that???

younger people will never understand what kind of a PHENOMENON she was when she first came out and mtv was running her "vision of love" debut over and over again. probably %80 of 90s teens was in love with her lol.
I think her and Whitney definitely revolutionised the pop music scene with melisma and made it mainstream. It’s crazy to think how much influence their voices continue to have on modern day singers.

I agree as well! Have been saying this for years! Mariah especially has really laid the groundwork for all future signers to come after here! Almost every singer that came after her has some sort of Mariah element in their voice in the sense of Melisma, runs and rifs, belting etc…. For example, Arian Grande was inspired by Mariah and so many signers that came after Ariana imitate Ariana Grande not even knowing that Ariana was inspired by Mariah! This gen X these days are being inspired by singers, not knowing that those singers in turn were inspired by Mariah.

Yea, and even Mariah credited Whitney as an influence, early on. Considering whitneys album debuted in the mid 1980s, Mariah in 1990. No doubt Whitney influenced Mariah, who, in turn, influenced today’s singers. It was so nice to see Ariana and Jennifer Hudson sing with Mariah for their Xmas song in 2020! The look of joy on Ariana’s face! Ever since then, have you noticed-no one is comparing Ari and Mimi’s voices anymore. Same with ‘When you believe’, after the duet, nobody compared Mariah and Whitney. The influence is there but people aren’t so shady about it now! All it takes is a duet!

Mariah does melisma without it seeming like melisma. It's so amazing how intricate all her melodies are, not only with riffs, runs and melisma in general, but also register switching. I very much respect Beyoncé, but even though she is like a robot (perfectly executing all her riffs), the subtlety and musicality of Mariah's runs are above all other singers I've ever heard. She is almost superhuman.

Mariah’s pen has been the only one involved in most of her music, and she’s brought on collaborators to write with her on some songs but with the exception of covers that she has done, she has never sang anything she hasn’t written in her entire discography. It was one of the only stipulations she was able to get through her label as a freshly signed 18 year old, which is remarkably impressive and is one of the reasons she owns her entire catalog, not something many artists have to their credit.
She didn't write When You Believe but she sang it. But I get your point.

If it came from a different movie after Prince of Egypt, then it can be considered as a cover. So does it mean that Beauty and the Beast by Celine is also just a cover? in the 90's she was a breath of fresh air, new sound, new vocals everything in between and out of the universe, gorgeous., music videos, live performances, her own background singer sheesh come on.... her talent and work ethic is why she thrived and managed to carry on for so many years, and yes she is still my fave.

Both teenagers and my diva was writing songs 40 year olds would dream of.. the truth is Whitney’s discography as a whole is boring af this is why she’s known as a legacy act. Your girl peaked after “My love is you love.” Her comeback album “I look to you” versus “emancipation of Mimi” doesn’t compare lol. Mind you she had 20-30 producers and writers on the album and barely pushed a million copies worldwide yikes! While emancipation pushed 13 million plus. Quality production, songwriting. And sales. Absolutely amazing reaction I truly enjoyed it! Mariah is one of the greatest singers of all time! And before that she's one of the greatest song writers of all time! More than 16 of her 19 #1 hits she wrote and then did vocally what artist even now try to even begin duplicating! There's the Vocal Trinity which we all know and that's Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, And Ms Mariah Carey! These sistas have there own lane in the history books and there's no need in honestly comparing either to the other because all 3 are icon's and have been an inspiration to everyone! But Mariah that range is unmatched and the fact that her whistle register can be so soft and delicate or can literally rattle your ear drums and let's not forget about the vibrato and that she can sing every note while in whistle tone! Man living legend

I remember where I was stood when I first ever heard her voice back in around 1994 in the UK. I stood still shivered and said to my dad's wife 'I need to know who that is'. I've been hooked on her vocals ever since. She's a legend. Love your review of her vocal abilities thanks for this 😊

The best part? These aren’t even her best live vocals.
I always show people Mariah Carey's live versions of "I Want To Know What Love Is" when I want to display her vocal range and singing ability. The switches from chest to head to whistle and back again, sometimes all in the same lyric. It shows off her classic and beautiful tone and agility. But also her performance ability, being able to put on a show and display musical genius. One of my favs is her performance on X Factor UK.
I'd already seen all of those videos before, but seeing your reactions to them puts it in a total different level

Did you notice how John Henny had to defend her again and again? The massive amount of critics througout her outstanding career makes me sad beyond words. It hit me real hard when comparing this vocal reaction video to millions of other videos of that kind on YT. I'm not a lamb, but PLEASE leave this ICON alone! Anyone with ears next to their brain and a heart filled with love and understanding in their cheast should realise that Mariah will always be in a league of her own and a blessing to music. And those who can't stop picking on her because of vocal "decline" must have sucked at biology BIG TIME! We will all end up with a "vox senile" - simple as that!

@@willianmangabeira9936 she already lost her voice basically starting in 97 and that excuse is beyond tired. The only singer that has ever happened to was Julie Andrews over 30 years ago and thousands of nodule removals are done daily. It’s fine if she doesn’t wanna risk it, but she stop performing live anymore because it embarrasses me for her. She could get almost all her range back if she did it. Some of her whispery techniques could change but not much else.

Mariah's talent truly is unparalleled and unique. She was blessed by God and her talent is immense. Her performances get me teary eyed. How can a human be so freaking talented and beautiful. With that said, people are too harsh on her. She has nothing left to prove.

GREAT video! It's great to hear and see a voice teacher respond to Mariah's incredible, superhuman, unparalleled singing that many millions of us fans have appreciated for decades. I also really appreciate your mention of Mariah being an accomplished, talented songwriter, which she is. She reminds me of Maria Callas because of her absolute commitment to vocal quality and integrity and because she pushes herself to get the most out of her vocal ability. I'm not a vocal coach or expert but I don't think there is another modern-day singer with such an impeccable, powerful, controlled range as Mariah's. I love every song of hers, some more than others, but, with that voice, she can never go wrong.

Can u please talk about how she creates those vocal breaks? Similar as to "come" 13:41 it sounds like she's like coughing out the note in a way, or as if the tone is too dense so that the vocal chords disconnect for a second? That is my favorite effect in her voice, along with her growls. But I just can't recreate it, help please
I think it might have something to do with her vocal nodules. I’ve never heard that type of vocal break with any other artist
It's an anatomy-thing. Mariah has a natural husky tone. To recreate it, you are on the right track but it would indeed be like an intentional cough. And that is not good for your voice.
I love that about her voice too! I used to mimic that a lot when I used to exclusively sing her songs
