In 2012-2013, she was incredibly agile and fluid. And let's not forget that jaw-dropping surprise performance on the Jimmy Fallon show - she totally went crazy, leaving everyone in awe!
Love this analysis - I think what we've learned with Mariah over the years is that nerves really get to her, so when she's uncomfortable on the stage/occasion, or nervous, or maybe not as well rehearsed as she'd like, that's when her performance slips a little bit, but when she's prepped and ready and comfortable, she can still sing miles above most other performers alive. I think Michael understands how, even though he's recorded a version of it, *she's* the one people want to hear singing this song and so he chose to play a supporting role and let her be the protagonist. I like his voice and I like his Christmas songs, but there's just no reality in which (most) people would prefer a cover of All I Want over the original, and he totally knows that.
I think in terms of speed and vocal agility when it comes to head voice, Mariah it’s literally a robot beast! She sounds almost auto tuned because that kinda robotic fast sound, it’s almost weird how FAST she is. I love it ❤
True! I believe the whistle & sometimes the chest voice (back in the 90s) as well. She's highly versatile with seamless transition, sometimes while performing melismata at the same time. Whitney Houston always reminds me of those powerful belted runs while Céline Dion is highly agile in both belts & head.
I appreciate Michael Bublé’s stylistic staccato to contrast Mariah Carey‘s agility/voice acrobatics -they complemented each other very well. Two talented professionals, knowing their strengths and complementing each other. No egos here! Excuse, my miss use, of the terminology; my technical knowledge is limited to elementary school music class and these videos.
In the bridge, I think she flipped to falsetto in the "please" was just a form of expression. Like "please!, bring my baby to me". A beautiful way of bringing that begging and girly quality.
Even though I cant sing and I dont understand much of the things you´re talking about, I just love that you still explain vocal theory and practises, different to many vocal teacher channels on youtube, who changed to only reaction content
I like that Mariah did the backgrounds for the first half of the bridge because we never get to see that live but in the duet she got to do stuff she would otherwise not do live!
She was in a fantastic vocal shape in 2013! The agility was insane. I actually believe if she went slower on the constant singing during the past decade she could’ve stayed in this shape til today
She has given a lot of her voice over the years since she first appeared in the music world. Like, it's crazy to think how she explored all the possibilities of her voice, in so many different ways, even with the problems of nodules, aging... she was reinventing herself. A true vocalist. All applause for the QUEEN
Mariah always my #1 but I agree, underneath the tree is deserving. Way more than Santa tell me. The latter sounds more like an anytime pop song than a holiday song
Mariah Carey and Michael Buble Christmas songs are always the best. I feel like I received the best gift by being able to listen to their songs on Christmas Eve. Today I'd like to introduce you to the Korean crossover male quartet “Libelante“. They are a group that formed through the Korean singing program Phantom Singer 4 last June, and consist of a musical theatre actor (Kim Ji-hoon), a tenor (Jin Won), another tenor (Jeong Seung-won), and a baritone (Noh Hyun-woo). They became popular not only because of their spectacular songs, but also because their average age at the time of debut was 25.7 years, making them the youngest among Korean crossover groups. Besides the musical theatre actor Kim Ji-hoon, the remaining three are still college students. Since their debut, they have covered songs from various genres including pop, Korean idol group, Italian canzone, etc. through more than 20 concerts, various broadcasts, and self-produced programs. Finally, on the 12th of this month, they released their mini album La Liberta. Today, I wanted to ask you to react to two of their songs: their cover of “Fria Como El Viento “by Luis Miguel and their original release “On Your Way”. The styles of the two songs are slightly different. This is because Libelante aims to popularize crossover music in Korea, where the crossover genre is not yet popular. So, their song “On Your Way” is of a genre that is more familiar to the general public. I want to know how you feel about this rookie’s songs. If you decide to upload Libelante's reaction clip, I would like to share it with the Libelante fan community in Korea so that more than 10,000 of their fans can see it. Sam, I hope you have a happy Christmas. With love from Korea, Bia On Your way ua-cam.com/video/MZ9kXnQjFGU/v-deo.htmlsi=cVhXSzuJzKLhGNyz Fria Como El Viento ua-cam.com/video/G2lAo9o0LNw/v-deo.htmlsi=8D2pFFGcmcQ9_azZ p.s. I'm adding this just in case. If you plan to react to Libelante's song video, please blur their video and react to it. Recently, there have been a few cases in Korea where videos were taken down due to copyright issues.
I do really like Tory Kelly's 25th, really catchy and soulful. Fairytale of New York I often hear people have as a favorite if that one counts. Oh Santa! by Mariah Carey is great also, especially in the version with Ari and J Hud. We also gave Taylor Swift - Christmas Tree Farm. One that I for sure think counts as a christmas song is Roxette's It Must’ve Been Love, it was a christmas song in it's original version before it was in Pretty Woman and in the original version, Marie Fredriksson sang "And it's a hard Christmas day" instead of "And it's a hard winter's day" that it was changed to for the movie. This one is lesser known, but musical theatre artist Linda Eder has an absolutely beautiful song called The Bells of St.Paul that just has amazing storytelling - one of my favorites for sure and I wish it was more known.
When i watch your videos i try to analyze the parts myself before you analyze to see if i'm hearing the same sounds and vocal choices as you, and that has trained my ears a lot!
@@SamJohnsonVoice the main things are the production of the sounds and how they approach belts, also singers like Mariah Carey that have such similar tone in chest voice and falsetto i try to listen for when they seamlessly disconnect registers!
You give the highest level overviews of these performances. I love when people actually KNOW what is happening physically with the voice also. Youre superb!
I am a massive Mariah fan and I adore this song and will never tire of it. A modern Christmas song you should listen to though is Underneath The Tree by Kelly Clarkson. It's seriously amazing and whilst nothing will ever top All I Want, Kelly's song is pretty close!
Going slightly off beat is a deliberate musical style used frequently by soul singers. Patti LaBelle and Aretha Franklin do it all the time. It feels like ad libbing a song.
Love this song, love Michael Buble’ Carey sounds so comfortable and crushing her runs Not 100% confident I love these two voices together But who am I to say 😂
Even better than Santa Tell Me are Kelly Clarkson's Underneath the Christmas Tree and Mariah's own Oh Santa and Christmas Time Is In The Air Again. Kelly and Mariah are the only modern pop artists who can pull off a timeless, classic holiday sound and stretch it over an entire album.
Kelly clarkson underneath the Christmas tree and Ariana Grande Santa Tell Me are definitely the ones that have landed in recent years. I really enjoyed the Ava Max one, Christmas Without You. Here in Britain we do Christmastime (Don’t let the bells end) by the Darkness which is trying to bring back the glam Christmases of Slade and Wizzard My choir sings a rendition of Christmas in LA by Vulfpeck which is all the fun and really goes hard on that Jackson 5 Christmas vibe Should you enjoy harmonies and want something generally wintery then my choir also does Winter Trees by The Staves, which is gorgeous (at least the original is) Edit: ooh, Inalso hear 8 days of Christmas by Destiny’s Child a lot but it’s only in the last few years. Like, it took 20 years for it to stick for some reason Edit edit: oh, and, of course, weebs be listening to Holy Night from ToraDora
Nothing beats Mariah's Christmas song. It's just so good! But in terms of new songs I like Kelly's and Ariana's "Santa can't your hear me" & Little Mix's "One I've Been Missing"
My only wish this year by Britney Spears! She does a live version of Silent Night. I’d love for you to analyze her voice. It’s nowhere near the levels of Mariah, but I love it all the same for her emotive qualities.
Can you please react to Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson, and Ariana Grande perform “Oh Santa” at Madison Square Garden! It was such a good performance and the first time they’ve all performed the song! Great video, I’ve been subbed for years!
Great video and super interesting.. Want to hear you review “Oh Santa” , the version with Mariah, Ariana and Jennifer Hudson.. wish this one had’ve hit the charts big ❤
You should do Fairytale of New York. It is hands down the most popular christmas song and even more impressive, Shane MacGowan who passed away either this month or last, wrote it, recorded it and performs it absolutely drunk. Man manages to sing like a drunken angel 😂
Hi! You should react to Gabriel Henrique. He’s a self-taught singer from Brazil. Amaaazing voice, one of the best male singers I have ever seen. Check him out if you want to be surprised. ‘Something Beautiful’ is his last release on UA-cam and its breathtaking

She sideyed the band several times lol they started too early and same for the end she must've been pissed, her ending was so cleverly improvised.
If you catch it in the ending she switches when she hears the musician change direction. Her ear is perfection.
Underneath The Tree by Kelly Clarkson is definitely getting there in terms of being a modern classic. For me anyway ❤
