Lee definitely earned a few groans for that, but when you think about it the Pegasus probably wouldn't have stood up to much more punishment in a pitched fight anyway. Prior to running into the Galactica's caravan, she'd already taken at least one nuclear strike and Garner's idiocy caused Pegasus to take a minimum of two more nuclear strikes along the top of the ship which would have left structural damage that was likely permanent. Lee's idea was kinda dumb, but I think he might have been more incidental to the eventual demise of Pegasus than we give him credit.

He was given the BlackBird: he rams it into some flying debree
He was given the Pegasus : he rams her into a basestar
He was give the goberment of all fleet: he orders all ships rammed into the sun

The Peggy was in prime shape. She was definitively tougher and stronger than the Gal, not to mention had numerous systems and functions that made the New ship more useful long term. Did I mention it was newer, it did not have decades of battle damage hidden in her, plus had her FULL armor sheath.
Lee Adama dun F'ed up bad. The Gal was expendable as long as the Peggy was there. Under any normal circumstance Lee would have been shot for such willful insubordination and incompetence necessarily costing an utterly invaluable asset.
Such a beautiful, deadly craft. I'll take 120 of them.

Now if they had backup systems with hardwired programs, that would have avoided the virus. BTW IRL fighter jets have multiple back up flight control computers and the final one is a very simple system that is just designed to get the jet home.
It would make sense to have slightly less able but totally unwritable backups, maybe even a emergency analogue system when your #1 foe is a hacking genus. Along with a mechanical override button.
Good call! One thing that annoyed me was that the whole plot of the show is based on an intergalactic civilization that doesn't know the absolute basics of network security, and local hardwired networks that aren't open to wireless hacking apparently don't exist.
As far as I know f-16 is totally unflyable without flight computer due to it's unstable flight characteristics. This is why it does not have any simple backup programs. But you are correct there are reduncancies 4 of them infact. 4 flight computers do same calculations and each of the must agree. And if all flight computers fails well... that's a ejection time :D

@@LeonidSaykin Well back to modern fighters. They do constantly share information between planes. Google link 16 and link 12. They are used to share current location of planes to each other and targeting information. It's really valuable tool to coordinate fight. Also planes send targeting information to missiles during the flight and missiles send information back to plane if they have detected target by missiles own sensors. So yeah even modern planes do have their own "wifi"

Really loved the Mark 7 but the only problem is that throughout the whole show, no one ever used the third gun. It's such a strange addition. It's still a sexy fighter.
Or that the HMD gimballed targeting function of the guns and the 7's systems was never portrayed...
Though if you play BSG Diaspora Shattered Armistice you get a taste of what could've been included into the show.

Played that. Only a demo, no new campaigns were ever forthcoming sadly. Worked great in the FS2 engine!

Firefly was an amazing show, so amazing it was killed half way through its first season, and still got a spinoff movie.
I never got into Caprica but there are a lot of good shows that get canceled too early, the same as there are some very bad (in my opinion anyway) shows which get 5+ seasons
Literally my FAVORITE sci-fi starfighter, but I would change a few things:
1. Instead of having a dorsal-fin gun, add two additional guns close to the hull in the manner of the Mk. II Viper. This would remove the reliance on gimballing the cannons.
2. Carry both internal and external missiles (maybe this is already a thing because Resurrection Hub?). Such a payload of 4-6 guided weapons would make the Viper far more dangerous at long range, as well as being effective against the Cylon Raiders and their missiles.
3. Missile-jamming systems, like that on the Battlestar Pegasus (watch Battle of Resurrection Ship) but on a smaller scale.
4. Call the abovementioned modifications the Mk. IX Viper.
5. MAKE THE THING IN BLACK AND ORANGE! I MUST HAVE AN MCRN VIPER.
(But seriously though, a Donnager launching these things would make no sense but would be *soooo* cool).
The one thing that it really needs is an ftl drive. Think about all the possibilities that are unlocked when the strike craft are not stuck having another ship have to move them from place to place

They made it for the Blackbird which looked somewhat bigger than the Vipers but who knows....
The missile jamming system you mentioned is called ECM (Electronic Countermeasures) and we only saw Raptors and newer Battlestars have that system but sticking it into a Viper.... It would take some research first. The additional guns means extra weight plus the interior and exterior missiles. Therefore, you'd have to reinforce the spaceframe doubly in order to hold these additions but good idea nonetheless.
You've essentially designed a heavy viper, itd have to be much bigger for the ECM and FTL packages along with all the extra ammo and weapons bays, probably even bigger than a raptor honestly.
Battleoid I might be wrong but I’m pretty sure the Vipers are about as long, if not than longer, than the Raptors. The Raptors, of course, are wider and heavier overall.
Love to see a piece on the Arrow Wing, or Arwing, from Star Fox.
Or Space Battleship Yamato.

But to be fair the Arwing does kind of looks like an arrowhead from a top-down perspective.
The Arwing is honestly the furry version ofnthe viper with extra bits and energy weapons instead of projectile based weapons. Really compare a viper to it. In ternms of the nose theyre not much different. With the exception that the viper cant turn into a mech...
As a hardcore Star Fox fan, who has played the games and read the comics, (Both the Nintendo Power Comics and the Japanese Exclusive Manga) I have never heard the Arwing called the Arrow Wing. Still would be down to seeing an Arwing video, or heck, the Great Fox herself. (Which is a Dreadnought Class...Assault Carrier...Okay?)

It's too bad we didn't get to see more of Pegasus in the show, but considering how small the interior sets for the ship were, they probably didn't have the budget to show off its automated manufacturing facilities.
They only had CIC and corridor sets to use; they were all bought cheaply from the 2004 failed pilot of Lost in Space. All other sets were recycled and redressed from Galactica.
According to RDM, the reason the Pegasus wasn't able to stick around longer than it did was due to budgetary restraints primarily due to the introduction of the Basestar interior sets. Though they did recycle the Pegasus' CIC for use in the short clips of the Valkyrie's.
Seriously one of the coolest designs I've ever seen. That's why I own a small model of it in my room.

@@robertwsaul There is an Interview with one of the creators, somewhere in the internet. He told what they planned with another 4 seasons. Too be short: Everyone would have survived the ending of season one, except ... one. But the ultimate ending would be even more depressing then the one we got.
Loved these birds. It was a shame we never saw both pods streaming Mk VII's in the show.
Probably not gonna see this, but I would love it if spacedock did a breakdown of the technology from the universe of subnautica. Might I suggest the cyclops class submarine or the self warping quarantine enforcement unit.

Because it was literally never used. The show always prioritised story and characters over technology, even when it resulted in weirdness like that.

Anybody else notice that the MK-7 had two different designs? I think was in season 3, maybe 4 that they introduced the design that was being shown in this video.
Both designs appear in the video but yes, it was around Razor that it changed simply because they let the designer of the Mk.II have a go at improving it with no consideration toward continuity. Me too Lee was an idiot they could have saved Pegasus.
They should have scuttled the old Galactica, transferred the flag command to the Pegasus, then renamed the latter as the new Galactica.
It's sacrifice probably could've been avoided if it hadn't offloaded its *ENTIRE* fighter complement to protect the fleet before jumping into the battle. That and a failure to capitalize on the momentum gained by jumping in and immediately destroying one of the Basestars.
@@walterdayrit675 Do what you suggest, but don't scuttle Galactica is probably the better idea. For all it's faults, Galactica is still an impressive warship.

The first image displayed in the video is actually the Mark 6.
Funnily enough that agrees with my own headcanon that the Drolet redesign of the Mk.VII is a Mk.VI, but that was never confirmed - the studio reality was that they let Drolet redesign the Mk.VII for some reason, and then featured that from Razor onwards (although there's at least one scene featuring both variants on screen at the same time!). Ah screw it, let's go with Mark VI/6!

The war was in their favor. That is why the Cylons resorted to the plan they used. Ship for ship, the Colonials were better.

@@AuroraAustralis_ if only the humans knew how he truly sold his own race out. A fitting punishment for him, going along with your comment, should be castration, but only of the penis. He needs to live in order to suffer but by removing the 1 object on his body that caused him to turn on his race will also prevent it from ever tempting him again. Plus he will have to sit down every time he needs to pee- always reminding him of his treachery and ensuing punishment.
While the Original Series Viper and the Reimagined Mk II are both classic ships, you have to admit the Mk VII is a thing of beauty.
Fun fact for you. The real world F-16 Fighting Falcon is often nicknamed the Viper as a nod to the fighters in the original BSG. The Mk VII is a nod back, with the ship being designed to closely resemble the F-16. When the real world plane was being named, several ideas where brought up. It was described as looking like a kind of snake when approaching you from the end of the runway and the name "Cobra" was first attributed to it. However another plane had that name pegged, so it was shifted to Viper after the fighters in BSG, and it has remained the unofficial alternate name for the F-16 ever since. The Mk VII's appearance is clearly meant to acknowledge that.

Flying In atmosphere: The fighter can easily achieve escape velocity (Mach 32.6 / 25053 mph / 40320 kph) within about 3 minutes. Fighter can reach a top acceleration of 9 G but is limited by the fighters computer to 7 G to prevent pilot blackout. When the fighter is operating within an atmosphere, pilot will normally keep velocity below Mach 7.5 (5771.25 mph / 9288 kph). It is a VSTOL design, it cannot be launched from a standstill, but needs a short runway (700 meters when fully loaded)
Flying In Space: The fighter does not have an effective top speed but is limited by acceleration. Fighter can reach a top acceleration of 9 G but is limited by the fighters computer to 7 G to prevent pilot blackout. The fighter normally operates at 1 G except in combat to conserve fuel.

It is badass and the sleek design is nice too but MkVII will never replace MkII! She's the real beauty.
Although i have to admit, it was pretty nice to pilot in BSG: Diaspora. It's sad that Diaspora never took of.
As far as I know, the team behind Diaspora is still working on its sequel, just progress is going slow (as volunteer projects tend to.)

Will you do a review off the Viper Mk 1 from the original series/ "First Cylon War"? I recall seeing one in the shadows of the hangar-deck museum during the miniseries so I'm guessing that version of the Viper existed at the start of the First Cylon War.

I personally would love to see breakdowns of the starfighters from various video games. Wing Commander, Tachyon, Starlancer, Freelancer, Star Wolves, etc., instead of just Star Wars and BSG (which, let's be honest, *most* of your videos are about. And there's nothing wrong with that, but I'd like to see you branch out.)

Correct, the MK VII is designed in such a way as a means of returning the nod that the F-16 pilots gave by nicknaming their planes Vipers (a far superior name than the F-16's official one of "Fighting Falcon")

RommelLuna, I grew up when “Star Blazers” ( the US version of “Space Battleship Yamato”) was on the air. I loved that whole series. Also purchased the English-dubbed live-action movie the Japanese produced.
Probably the most aggressively realistic space fighter in sci-fi.
I'd argue the Babylon 5 Starfury is more realistic as a pure space fighter, but for a fighter designed for both atmosphere and space combat the Vipers (especially the VII) are hard to beat.

If the Mark 7 viper went up against TIE fighters, It's ability to turn 180 degrees and fire on them chasing the Mark 7 would really surprise the TIE pilots.

I didn't know they upgraded to Mk VIIs. I thought for the rest of the TRS they stuck with Mk IIs.
They pretty much did, but it did appear. The Mk.VII was less heavily featured presumably because the Mk.II was the fan favourite.
I think you mean 30 caliber, (Or 7.62mm) not 30mm, as I did see people holding the rounds in the show and 30mm are monstrous in size and to my knowledge only the Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II uses such a cannon and it is much larger then the Viper and the weapon takes about half the entire space in the aircraft.
The rounds look somewhere between 50cal and 25mm Bushmaster ammo

This is shaped a bit like the American X-15, an old spy plane of the late 1950's and 1960's.

The Star Wars' X-Wing is probably the most famous sci-fi small fighter, but the Galactica Vipers were much cooler for me.
Are you planning on doing a video on the prototype Blackbird?
A thought suddenly occurred to me. Why didn't the remnants of the colonies produce more mark 2 vipers instead of mark 7s? Mark 2s must have been easier on resources and were likely quicker to produce. Keep the quality fighters for specialized missions, but have a large airwing of the quantity fighters as a general purpose fighter.

They are RCS thrusters. You see them used in the show for manoeuvring.

Think about it. Though the Galactica could take more damage the peg was more powerful needed less crew and could produce infinite vipers.

It’s actually not clear if they use magnetic acceleration in their weaponry; even the production staff can’t decide what is what. And Galactica didn’t have Mk VIIs, it was going to be turned into museum so its ordnance and fighter craft were removed, or in the case of the Mk IIs became exhibitions.
Galactica *did* have Mk VIIs. Emphasis on "did". They were almost all destroyed when the Cylons used their virus to knock out their systems as seen in the Miniseries.
