Hey Nick, thank you so much for listening to these songs, and for adding Don't Dream It's Over at the end. I didn't include that one intentionally because it was their huge, huge hit, which I suspected you had heard before. It's a beautiful song. As others have said, Split Enz was big in the late 70's and early 80's that Neil performed in with his brother Tim. They were from New Zealand and were incredibly popular there and in Australia. Then after they finished up, Neil formed Crowded House in Australia, and Don't Dream It's Over was a massive hit. It was during this time that he earned his reputation for being one of our great songwriters. When Crowded House wrapped up, and their drummer, Paul Hester killed himself, it was a very emotional time. Neil went on to record a few solo album, and Liam Finn, who played guitar on those albums was his son. He did that reunion tour with his brother Tim and Split Enz, where the video for Message to My Girl was from, then went on to join Fleetwood Mac. That live version of Don't Dream It's Over from their final show as Crowded House was a perfect addition. Thank you!
Thank you for suggesting these for Nick to play. This band just makes me smile. Neils brother Tim's album Before & After is one of my favorites as well. And thanks for including Distant Sun...I would have added Pineappple Head which I love to death. PS: yes to more World Party especially "Put the Message In the Box"
Neil Finn is one of the greatest songwriters of his generation and is criminally underrated. Saw him earlier this year and he still sounds great. Distant Sun is probably my favorite.
Also the last clip was from their then farewell concert in Sydney. Neil reformed the band with bassist Nick Seymour and they have released several albums since. The event that prompted the reformation was the death of drummer Paul Hester in the mid 2000’s by suicide.
@@michaelrohan443 The reformation was Neil starting to wite another solo LP and realizing that much of the content could easily be that of a Crowded House release so he contacted Nick to involve him.
Not sure about the underrated word that keeps getting thrown around. These guys were hugely popular in the 80's. How does one even judge what's underrated now, since very few great artists are heard by more than a handful of people now?
@@marks9140 The only place he's not underrated is Aus/NZ where he's acknowledged as a legend. Here in the US, I've been into Neil and his various projects for 30 years and I rarely encounter anyone else who's even heard of him
Split Enz have to be one of the most underrated bands ever. Neil and Tim Finn's harmonies were incredible along with their strong, original songwriting chops. Like Genesis, their early years (pre-Neil Finn) were quite theatrical (w/makeup!) and more musically adventurous. Nice pick and great reaction! Definitely do more Split Enz, go with: "One Step Ahead", "I Hope I Never", "My Mistake", "Sweet Dreams".
I heard a lot of very different music varying from prog to southern rock, hard rock, power pop, folk, singer-songwriter to ..... but Crowded House is THE Band my wife and I as a couple love the most. We've seen them live 5 times over the years, thankfully in june 2022, after the pandemic, I have never seen an audience that emotional connected to a band. Thank you
The gentleman playing the acoustic guitar in Message to my Girl is Neil's brother Tim (together they're the Finn Brothers and were both in Split Enz, which Tim founded; Liam is Neil's son, who is also a musician). Neil is a great songwriter, whose songwriting matured and became quite sophisticated. Crowded House was Neil's band when he moved to America, and on their third album, Woodface, Tim joined them. I've got over 1000 albums and Woodface makes any top ten list I put together. Some of my favorite stuff is just the two of them together - catchy jangly pop with brilliant harmonies. Glad you enjoyed these!
I bought the album “Together Alone” by Crowded House in 1994 and I still listen to it very often. So many great songs on that album that I know you will love. Neil Finn is a great singer songwriter, and has had a fantastic career. When Fleetwood Mac fired Lindsey Buckingham, they brought in Neil to play and sing his parts.
Kind of funny that this comes right after your Richard Thompson video because there's a direct connection: producer Mitchell Froom. His first album with RT, Daring Adventures, which includes "Valerie," was released June 1986. Crowded House's first album, which includes "Don't Dream It's Over," was released August 1986. He also produced the next two Crowded House albums and the next few by Richard, including Rumor and Sigh which you did a track from ("I Misunderstood".)
Yeah! Thanks Michael! One of the best songwriters ever, is Neil Finn. TheI believe he was only 17 when he penned Message To My Girl after he joined his big brother aTim’s band Split Enz, huge hit for them. You are not the first to compare Neil to Lennon/McCartney, such is Neil’s vast array of songs. R.I.P. Paul Hester, the original CH drummer seen in the last clip. Hi Nick, great to see this marathon. I remember buying the 1st hit single by Split Enz called "I Got You" in 1980. I heard a song some time later by a group called Crowded House and loved it, so checked out an album, and ended up buying all the ones they had released at that time, so I was a bit late in finding them. I bought four albums in the 90's within a week. I never knew the connection with Split Enz for a while. Neil Finn is just an amazing songwriter and has a great voice. Love these albums....Going to sit back and enjoy this marathon. Byee Jim X
Nick this was great. Neil Finn and his brother Tim are both wonderful song writers. Crowded House had a string of great records in the 80's and I love them all. Great arrangements, great recrodings and songs that are cleverly written and engaging. They are more popular in Australia & New Zealand than they were here (much like Midnight Oil when it comes to popularity outside their native countries). Let me tell you Neil can write songs as good as any one can and it's a shame they've been overlooked here. Just one clever catchy tune after another but never dull or uninteresting. Thanks for this and to the person who suggested it.
One of our finest singer/songwriters over the past 40 years. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live recently with a reformed version of Crowded House including his two sons. Brother, Tim, is another talented member of the family. I believe it was Tim that invited Neil to join Split Enz, and the rest was history.
Crowded House is an absolutely must live. Distant Sun was the peak of the show for me and they ended with Better Be Home Soon, the whole crowd was singing, which a happens a lot at their shows.
Neil Finn/Crowded House/Split Enz are long time favs of mine, thanks for hitting this. His Neil Finn and Friends album/DVD features Johnny Marr (The Smiths & more), brother Tim (Split Enz co-founder), son Liam, Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway (Radiohead), Lisa Germano (John Mellencamp and others), Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing) and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) playing chess from bells catalog and since from their own.
In my mind, I always file Split Enz under smart 80s pop along with bands like Squeeze, Aztec Camera, XTC, Prefab Sprout etcetera. Maybe that should be the theme of my next marathon request.
And the song was at least partially inspired by the late Paul Hester, as she toured with Crowded House at one point. The verse that begins "He's got a daughter he calls Easter..." is a reference to his daughter Sunday.
Loved Split Enz (you could do a pretty deep dive just in their stuff) and Crowded House’s album “Woodface” is fantastic start to finish! His brother Tim had some good solo stuff too (Persuasion”). Thanks Michael!
I love Neil Finn. I was a fan of Split Enz back in high school (70s/80s) and still love them today. Also love Crowded House. To hear Neil's brother, Tim, you should listen to "Bon Voyage" and "Dirty Creature". For Neil and Tim singing together, try "Angel's Heap" live. Other great Neil songs are "Four Seasons in One Day" and "Something So Strong". #nicknlexrequest
I feel sorry for all the people who have never heard this music. Parents appear to have really failed in educating their kids about great music, and there is no shared music experience like we had with the radio or even MTV growing up. Super marathon, thanks Mike and Nick. I'm a prog guy (esp. ELP), but also love the 80's - heck, almost all good music from any decade, but have to say, "Don't Dream it's Over" is one of my favorite songs of all time. Just beautiful!
Crowded House are brilliant. So great live too. Really love to interact with the audience. Neil is a gifted writer and singer. Much under rated (as several have noted) but well respected among fellow artists and bands. Their catalog is worth exploring as are their live performances on UA-cam
Neil and Tim Finn are two amazing songwriters. But I have to say my overriding memory of watching Slit Enz back in 1977 in London was seeing Noel Crombie play a solo on the "Electric Spoons "!!!! I kid you not.😊
Certainly do more Crowded House and Split Enz.....but also Neil's older brother Tim, the co-founder (along with Phil Judd) of Split Enz....his solo album 'Escapade' was huge and has some great songs. Tim was in Crowded house for one album, Woodface, possibly CH's best album, although 'Temple Of Low Men' is a cracker. Phil Judd had a band called Schnell Fenster after he left Split Enz, they are worth checking too. Speaking of John Farnham, you should check out his version of 'Help' with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.....the entire performance and his vocal skills will blow your mind! BTW, Crowded House reformed and still perform today.....with Neil's sons Liam on guitar and Elroy on drums and original bassist Nick Seymour with American Mitchell Froom on keys.

Looked it up at bam!
I've wondered for decades why you don't hear more Crowded House songs in movies. I mean, Distant Sun would be an amazing end credits track for the right film, but so would many others
Neil Finn's first two solo albums are very good. The second, One Nil, features Wendy (Melvoin) and Lisa (Coleman) (ex-Prince band members) who co-wrote a few of the tracks. From the first album, Try Whistling This, I'd recommend Souvenir, King Tide and Loose Tongues and from One Nil - Hole In The Ice, Secret God and Anytime.
The Enz guys Alll Crowded House, Ave made a huge impact on my life and my daughters life. NEIL actually saw my daughter was singing a part of a song wrong so he corrected her- I loved it! IN Avery nice way of course, she was 14😊

I think the words you are looking for in describing the music is singer/songwriter. It's a classification that doesn't really have any rules, but you know it when you hear it
I'm loving your marathons! Just subscribed. I'm wondering how many of the bands you don't recognise are Aus/NZ bands? I've got to assume that if John Farnham is linked then so is a whole swathe of talent that is unknown to many outside of their originating countries.
Also Brooke Fraser, daughter of famous All Black Bernie Fraser sings a fantastic version of Distant Sun and it is, in my opinion, a better version. On that same album, "She Will Have Her Way", which is a 2005 album made up of Kiwi and Aussie women covering Neil Finn's songs, Natalie Imbruglia (Torn) sings "Pineapple Head" and Renee Geyer sings "Into Temptation". Hi! How about making a music giveaway, when you post a potentially popular video? Let me explain: 1. You have a potentially popular video. 2. You say you'll listen to five random songs that people mark in the comments [or you can choose by the number of "likes"[or both in different videos]]. 3. People write more comments. 4. You get more channel activity + have fun with your subscribers! I just came up with this and haven't seen it anywhere else)
Correct pronunciation is "Splutt Inz". (I'm just simulating picking a fight with New Zealand, here. "Hypocritically", since I have an accent that does not just the Splutt Inz sound, but goes beyond. Well I would, if I didn't speak "BBC English" - but that's boring.) The Enz bit is a play on "NZ", I think. (For the name, "Nurh Zuhlind".) Better dash. They're tough down there. Scariest people on Earth.
One of their fans is the singer of a little band called *Pearl Jam* - Eddie Vedder. Here he is, singing *History Never Repeats* in Auckland. ua-cam.com/video/9QVkMO-JJwg/v-deo.html
Another of their fans was the late *Tim Smith* of (i.a.) the band now called *Spratley's Rats* . From their song, *Vine* I get the feeling he was also an ABBA fan (as well as being a fan of all the little creatures that scratch, chirp, and chitter in the undergrowth of the various jungles of the Earth). ua-cam.com/video/DqFl_oMuTRI/v-deo.html
Some of Tim's fans (and so, by extension, Split Enz/ Finn Bros. fans) are the members of Bergen band *Major Parkinson* . I think they're also fans of Chopin, if the song *Adville* is anything to go by. ua-cam.com/video/UBBvMN_d730/v-deo.html

I love that the next suggested video on the "Hey Now" video was "Lost Patrol" by Big Country which was on one of my marathon requests- ua-cam.com/video/F2ttDTZm-PI/v-deo.html

Hi!
How about making a music giveaway, when you post a potentially popular video?
Let me explain:
1996 farwell to the world
Correct pronunciation is "Splutt Inz". (I'm just simulating picking a fight with New Zealand, here. "Hypocritically", since I have an accent that does not just the Splutt Inz sound, but goes beyond. Well I would, if I didn't speak "BBC English" - but that's boring.)
The Enz bit is a play on "NZ", I think.

Don’t dream; it’s over…
