    aam a 89 yr old woman who still mows the lawn. Husband is a paraplygic a nd so helping me w fessable. fessith the assembly of our new S170 was not fessible. Gor the book but I do better with videos. Put the grass catcher on by myself with the video and now I am learning how to start the mower. If I have to go back, its simple to do. These videos are much better than the books that come . Thank you so much

    The quick change oil filter is great, IF you also drain the rest of the oil, by opening the drain plug for the engine. The quick change filter is about twice the size of a standard filter, so it may be better. The problem for some is the cost. $40. JD offers a conversion kit, to return it to the standard filter.(about $25). Great, very detailed video. I wish I saw one before I bought my E120 2+ years ago.

    Great video. Was thinking of downsizing from my Toro zero turn 50" to this tractor. Zero turn doesn't do well on the slight incline of my drainage in ditch. S170 seems like a great option

    This is one of the best tractors I have owned, my last tractor was a 26 hp 54 inch cut, and that wide of a deck flopped high and low too much on my uneven ground with lots of hills. I've also had 42 inch decks, but the short 3 blades of the 48 inch have less resistance out on the end of them, giving more torque to cut high grass, than the longer blades of the 2 blade 42 inch, or the 3 blade 54 inch. I would have gotten a 25 or 26 hp engine, but 24 hp was the most offered. I had a 25 hp with a 3 blade 46 inch cut back in the late 1990s, but the John Deere S 170 tractor, with the 24 hp and 48 inch cut does about as good. I also got the weight bracket and 2 weights installed on the back of the tractor to give extra traction going up steep hills and it works pretty good.

      @@JohnsonsSmallEngines would you recommend changing the oil filter kit after 8 hours of use or is it not needed?

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  2 роки тому

      @@GarveyMustangMan It’s good to change the oil after the first eight hours on a new machine just in case there was any castings left over in the engine when built but there making engines and clean that much better now. Change the oil when it gets dirty or once a year rule of thumb. Grease front suspension at least once or twice a seasoning depending on how many hours you’re putting on your machine.

      There are two in each axle spindle, one in the center of axle under the tractor, two in the front wheels and one on each of the blade mandrels. I will say, the bearings they put on the mower deck are junk compared to your John Deere. They do not make anything like they used to.

    Hey mate I've been watching your videos for a fair while now and appreciate the detail and effort you put into them. I'm just curious as I'm thinking of looking into a new mower. I've currently got a L100 and a La105 I think (automatic version) but I'm tossing up between either fixing them or buying new and if I bought new would a tractor style or zero turn suit me best, my question is from a mechanical and maintenance point of view, what brand etc has been the easiest and best of both tractor and zero turn types in your opinion? I get sometimes it's luck of the draw but just curious. I've got 2 acres, some hills and terrain which the tractor style handles fairly decent. Cheers mate any help would be much appreciated 👍 keep it up 🇦🇺

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  3 роки тому

      In my opinion for the price and what you get, I would say for your terrain and acres you have, if money doesn’t matter purchase a Exmark 48” O turn with a Kawasaki engine and if you take care of it, it will be the last machine you’ll ever need. If cost matters be aware that they do not make much to last.
