Excellent tutorial. Followed this as I performed the conversion on my S120 for its first oil change at 8 hours. Only difficulty was unscrewing the existing square drain plug - I could not get an adjustable wrench in that tight space, at least not one that I had that could give me the torque required to undo it. Easy oil change is no inovation since a lot of oil remains inside the tractor while a very small amount is changed. After many years of service using the tractor, old oil must be in a terrible condition. Engine must definitly suffer and get serious damages by doing so. We UA-camr are lucky to find videos like this one to help us to find a better way to take care of our costly materials. Thank you so much mister. BTW I ordered the kit and made the replacement !!!!

@@tlm3574 The quick change assembly on the engine does not accept spin-on filters. Removing that part and installing the double threaded nipple is the way to go.
Its JDs way of charging a lot for an oil filter and have the engine go out before it should. Then you either have to replace the engine or buy a new lawnmower.
$70 for a filter and about half a quart of new oil and nearly 2 quarts of dirty oil get's left behind. This has got to be one of JD's stupidest ideas. Great video.
Thanks. Good explanation. I like the way your rack is situated that you can stand on the side of it and work. Did you custom build it or is it a standard lawn mower or lift?
I agree! However, if you watch the UA-cam video posted by John Deere themselves, they do not say to do anything other than change the filter and top up the oil if required. Only about half the engine oil gets changed like that. So basically, local pricing is about $70 for a filter, with 3/4 qt of oil included. That's an awful expensive filter...lol!
The average mower has very few hours between oil and filter changes. Drive your vehicle for 5000 miles and see how many hours it has. Easy change is fine.
I agree with you on hours, but car engines are FAR more efficient and have higher tolerances than small engines. Oil gets dirty and breaks down faster in the smaller hotter air cooled engines. I prefer to change ALL my oil when it's due.
Can I ask u what oil filter you used i have a jd e130 and I waunt to use a different filter then john deere but all the auto shops I call their like 19 bucks lol
I use filters from my wholesale supplier, but a WIX 51056 would work. Filters and oil have gone way up in price since this video though, so the pricing I mention is probably not accurate any more.
There's a few numbers that will work. B&S 492056, B&S 492932, even Tecumseh number 36563 will work. They are common filters for most riding mowers equipped with B&S engines. Available at small engine shops. Even a WIX 57035 will fit.
I wonder what effect that easy change system has on the life of the engine when that much oil is left behind. I think that your retrofit is the best thing for the engine as well as for the pockets of the customer who was forking out ( was it $70 ) for the filters ??
Yep, $70 CDN here for those filters. And only 50 to 60% of the oil gets changed? I think 99% oil changed is a better number for longer engine life expectancy...
Whoa..Great money saving move but the only thing I'd add to this is not to make the change over until after all your warranties have expired . Manufacturers and extended warranty policies will find the the least bit of excuse to say NO! to your claim because OEM equipment was changed out for none OEM. You have to know warranty shops will report the changes. Just sayin'. I plan to purchase a JD S170 but not now with the prices $800.00 more than they were in 2020. And it seems to be across all similar brands. Why a JD S170? it has 4 scalp wheels which reportedly makes all the difference if your in a warm season climate with Bermuda grass.
Seems like one of those "plans" that "works well on paper" but fails when put to use in the field.... Leaving that much dirty oil in the machine seems like washing only one leg of your pants.. Good video.
Insane how much “old” oil stays in the engine. Terrible design. Definitely going to convert my mower to this setup. Only possible problem I see with this change over is if the plastic cover will fit back over the drain plug side. May have to cut a hole for the plug to stick out of.
What a shame.. wasting a nice engineered aluminum large part. Thousands of these are tossed in the tracy...JD should ask for them back to clean and reuse.
John Deere could also offer some trade in value on the old part if you buy a kit to convert to a standard filter. I don't see them doing that anytime soon… lol
Great video. Converted my own E130. Not paying $70.00 for an oil change on a garden tractor.

Thanks for the info and video, does the conversion effect the warranty?
I can't speak for John Deere warranty. You may want to call a dealer with that question.
Thank you!
@@randomwrenching thanks
What is the size of that big bolt?
I believe it's either a 1-1/16" or 1-1/8"
1-1/8th or 28mm bolt
What filter did you use? Where’d you get it? Does JD have the filter you need?
There's a few numbers that will work. B&S 492056, B&S 492932, even Tecumseh number 36563 will work. They are common filters for most riding mowers equipped with B&S engines. Available at small engine shops. Even a WIX 57035 will fit.
How often do you change the oil with the new conversion?
Briggs and Stratton recommends oil changes annually, or every 50 hours. Whichever comes first. Great question!
$39 in USA.
@@sptrader6316 Still too much, imo.
sir- do you live in Canada ?
Yep, southern Ontario
New subscriber nicely done ✅👍😎🇨🇦
Much appreciated!
John Deere calls it planned obsolescence LOL
That is becoming more common...
Will this conversion work on the JD S160 724 cc?
I believe that engine is made by B&S. if so, it should work the same.
Thanks for the comments. I do like mower decks with 4 wheels...
Seems like one of those "plans" that "works well on paper" but fails when put to use in the field.... Leaving that much dirty oil in the machine seems like washing only one leg of your pants.. Good video.
Thanks John, I agree
Insane how much “old” oil stays in the engine. Terrible design. Definitely going to convert my mower to this setup. Only possible problem I see with this change over is if the plastic cover will fit back over the drain plug side. May have to cut a hole for the plug to stick out of.
The plastics did fit back on this E130 when I was done.
Hi OK
What a shame.. wasting a nice engineered aluminum large part. Thousands of these are tossed in the tracy...JD should ask for them back to clean and reuse.
John Deere could also offer some trade in value on the old part if you buy a kit to convert to a standard filter. I don't see them doing that anytime soon… lol
