I literally sell fishing gear as a full time job and these are the exact questions I ask customers to figure out what they need, once you ask these questions makes picking gear super easy
I think everyone has been wanting this pretty much forever, the depth and help that I have received from you over the course of so many years has most definitely changed my life, especially the way I fish - Cheers Briggsy -Josh, WA
As someone that sells fishing tackle this is pretty much the same technique I use to recommend gear. It works from low-end to high-end gear. But you would be surprised how often people are unable and to answer these questions.
I’ve literally been watching all your videos and looking at the descriptions for gear suggestions. Prepping for a trip from Vic to NQ doing some medium set up fishing for Spanish/small GT etc.. this video came at the perfect time!!
Great run down of what one needs, to do what you do. I bet there is a lot of hours that go into those epic vids. you make. I have to say out the three of the original Morning Tide Crew, I find you Briggsy the easiest to listen to, so here's to another great year of content and a successful year ahead.
Hey Briggsy, just an idea but you should do a video explaining the difference between pe and lb line and rods as I feel like you being such an experienced fisho would know the measurement helping less experienced anglers understand Fishing. Also Love your videos man!! You always have me waiting for you to post that new video, You have also inspired me as a young fisherman to start filming and posting the things that I experience while exploring the depths of this amazing diverse hobby that is fishing. keep up the great work🎣🎣💪👍
Really nice!! I think only by fishing throughout the years, can someone conclude what gear really needs! I believe most of us, started with cheap gear and long the way,we upgraded to as much we can afford, even on lures!!by the way,i use your fgknot 4 years now and video like this, are always helpful. Thanks allot!!!
Great video, lots for all to learn here. BTW you can get the teeth marks out of a rod handle by steaming it over a boiling kettle (if you are bothered, or want to sell it or something)
For me briggs Rock- top water/bait/soft plastics Beach- bait surf rod/soft plastic For my medium set up i use either a sienna 5000 or a daiwa luxel 5000c The rod i use luxel rod i believe its 7 to 7,6 foot rod. Dear briggsy it’s me Harry and I have autism and I met you at the convention centre I was shaking and it was akwerd but I met you so my life is better you have a good day
Great vid briggsy have been done the same road 30years ago cheap tackle is cheap tackle get the rite setup and or confidence grows with it I brought a abu 2500c in 1989 had to save forever to get it matched it to a browning sikaflex 4to8 lb rod and caught hundreds of bass on it the outfit is still in perfect working condition 🍻👍
Bloody love it mate, in the UK my "heavy" setup is a 7-28gram! Medium being 3-15, light is 1-7 for saltwater. We just don't have the fish you get. I'm so jealous. Biggest reel would be a 4000, down to a 1000 for the light stuff
I love your videos and they have inspired me to do more fishing and have taught me incredible and cool things. Me and my father always watch your videos and we always loved them and we have watched basically all of your videos.
Always love tackle talks with Briggsy. There is an awesome you time e channel called the line laboratory. Very interesting seeing the true breaking strains and diameters of braids.
Omg Briggsy upload u are my fav UA-camr man I can’t believe me and my dad missed u at the Gold Coast fishing convention I’m catching u next year tho and I will be 15
this is so interesting. i'm new to fishing (partially because your videos got me hooked on the idea) but i'm in western PA. i'm just fishing ponds and lakes and currently have three setups and they total less than that spartan s80 rod. didn't even know that type of gear was out there.
Nice video, very intresting run down! I would love to see as well is your maintenance routine, specially for the reels. And something I'd love to point out is that we have so many questions about tackle because there is such an overwhelming offer of brands and models out there, even if you know what specs you're looking for you have to many options, especially if you have a budget that is not allowing to go for the few high end options (that's a small fraction compared to low to medium segment) Frothing for the GT video! ❤
Hi Mate, if you have many options I'd say you have to go feel them. Your hands on feel and comparisons are crucial for choosing your setup, without it you're relying on other peoples word or technical specs on the internet. Hands on feel is what should make the final choice because if you don't like the feeling of your setup you're not going to put in the 100s or 1000s of casts to get that big hook up! You want to love just winding your reel and tweaking your lures, regardless of hook ups and in that regard everyone has different taste in gear. So I think hands on feel is the ultimate tool if you're overwhelmed with options. For the reels I send them off if they need a service but otherwise just tighten up the drag and rinse them under the shower.
I got one setup as I’m just starting out at 16, I’m doing my nav up and I got a TD black 2500 for targeting flathead brim, tailor and herring, I got a 7,2 23 infeet rod
Hi Briggsy and Gday from sunny Queensland , top vid this one , thank you , best chat with you ever , was like listening to an old pal giving a few good tips , cheers
I just want your waterproof bag with the geet logo. Also im the same way with leader. I used to do a ton of land based snook/tarpon and always had everything from 20 pound to 80 pound flouro
I live in the northern us about 16 to 20 hours from the ocean. Freshwater fish around here only get big and crazy in the great lakes (really cool fishery but you apply similar gear theories as you would to saltwater) but if you dont have a boat you normally dont get many opportunities to hook big fish besides musky, salmon/trout when they run up the streams to spawn, carp (yuck), catfish (dont see many ppl catching big ones unless they are targeting with proper gear anyway) and sturgeon (very rare that you hook them). Mabye one day ill make a trip out to Australia and have a chance to fish down there.
Anyway i say all that to say its fun to watch these even though its useless to know what gear you use. Its really cool to see how much targeting fish down there differs. The price points for freshwater are much much different 😅 a vanford is considered really nice cream of the crop for spinning gear (besides stuff you can buy thats frankly overkill for most freshwater) and my 7'0 tatula medium is pretty much a nice do it all setup in terms of rod. Shit, even my stradic is pretty premium feeling compared to the walmart bought reels a lot of ppl put up with. Sure i have friends that buy the nice megabass, st croix top end, diawa g lumis shimano etc but its all overkill especially as a mostly bank fisherman who isnt realistically catching more than a 30 inch pike most of the time. If i had money and space a boat...shit id probably have 6 setups by now. But its stupid to carry that many around hiking to seldom touched low pressure waters. Anyways, love all of the content, hope to see more in the future!!!
Land based longer rods boating shorter rods its not rocket science depends more on the fish your targeting really to the gear you will need . Set your drag before you fish is more important than anything to get that fish to your feet if you have to piss around with your drag when your fishing your gonna loose the fish . Great Info mate cheers love your channel. 😉👍
I’m surprised that you don’t carry a PLB (personal locator beacon) Briggsy, going to such remote locations and after the boat incident it would be an easy, small addition to the backpack
Love your videos, wish I could fish for big pelagics but not many where I live. I think I’ve seen all your vids since the first morning tide episodes, can’t wait for some more. I was wondering what fighting belt you use and if you would recommend it? Hopefully I’ll be targeting some big tarpon and maybe offshore pelagics in the Caribbean this summer and would love to get a good fighting belt. Thanks so much, and good luck with some big GT in the future.
Hi Mate, I had a MC works belt, served me well over the years but I've stopped using a belt the last couple trips (I think I dropped some hook ups when trying to get the rod into the belt and would always be a bit to eager to get the rod in there instead of really making sure I'd set the hook first), so far so good but yet to hook a GT beltless. Stoked you like the films so much man, thank you for your ongoing support!
I was told that the saltiga 18k has different gearing compared to the 20k . 20k for jigging big doggies for example and 18k for popping as faster retrieve.
tbh i like penn personal preference don't mind daiwa but dont use shimano for gts and lower penn authority 9000 or 15000 for 700 is expenceive for some but keep in mind are you intending to use for long time or short time same as overheads you can use full metal like tic 30 to 130 or penn my advice do you research on the gear 1rst i use 5000 slammer 3 for small 1500 slammer for big 50wisw for sharks 50visx =50 narrow for ballooning sharks can use for marlin and tuna now after 7to 8 year using a 50 just got 80visw for big sharks and marlin dogtooth and tuna n swords tbh though don't start 80 50 or lower for beginner
great video briggsy! excited to see what you come out with next film wise. im finally getting the gear now to target bigger fish up the north coast of wa, and some friends and i have booked a 4 week trip starting late november, are there any tips you have for trying to teach people to fish?
I've got a play list with a ton of tips - ua-cam.com/play/PLp7D9Zra2rlPyO4naCb7C8O-GDSa2wWPx.html&feature=shared prolly one of the main things is don't go if it's big swell, in boat or landbased. Just fish on the calm days and everything will be way more safe and enjoyable! Then there's ABC "Always, Be, Casting" you gotta have your lure in the water to hook up so keep breaks to a minimum and cast your heart out. Test your drag before and make sure it's not to tight or loose. And definitely learn and practice your knots to a high level, losing a fish because of something you can control isn't good. Gotta put in the work and get your knot game up!
@Briggsy good to know. Thanks for the quick get back. I might have to stop being a cheapo with seaguar blue label but we go through so much of it with striped bass in Maine.
Hey Briggsy, what Gopro setting do you run for ur underwater slow-mo clips and ur normal vlogging clips. Because i just bought a GoPro hero 12 and I can't really get good quality clips.
Hi Mate, underwater I shoot on wide and 200fps. Out of the water 25fps super or hyper view. For both, protune on, and the main setting to change is white balance to 5000k (otherwise on auto, the colour will change constantly). I shoot on a few other settings like low sharpness and iso max 400, high bitrate but they’re not necessary in most cases.
Hey Briggsy! Thanks so much for the informative video. I was wondering if you use some backing before you spool on the braid! Got a certate SW 6000 coming my way with some PE3. On my smaller reels I usually do this, as it is a bit cheaper and it can prevent the braid from slipping, but maybe for this setup it might be better not to in case you hook a big one! Love your videos!!
Hi Mate, yeah I always put a little mono backing on all my reels these days, I think if you hook something massive and it gets right down to the spool the mono will hold a lot better than straight braid
Briggzy, All you tackle is shiny like new one. How you maintenance your gear, if the reel i already know how keep it that. But your rod how you keep that in shape? how you can preserve it and not get many damage like scratch.😊👍.🎣🐟
Just curious on your thoughts. I see a lot of people on youtube consistently using daiwa saltiga, saltist, etc for spinning reels. What do you think about higher end models of Penn spinning reels like the slammer or authority? Ive personally used a 10500 spinfisher with 500yrds of 100lb power pro usually for anything of major size, if not a everol for anything bigger than 500lbs. Anything under 100lbs i use a much wider variety but i tend to stick budget wise to penn for 100-500lbs.
Hi Mate, I've felt the old penns and they were on the heavy/clunky side, I've heard the new ones are much nicer but I've never felt one so can't really comment. Even before sponsors though I would always spend the extra coin to get top shelf reels, If I'm going to be casting all day I want the experience to be super enjoyable even if I'm not catching anything!
Could I ask how much line you managed to get on your 23 Saltiga 6000 and 4000? Was it exactly 300m of PE 3 and PE 2 respectively? I've had quite a fair bit of space left when i spooled only 300m of their respective lines...
Hi Mate, with all my reels I put some mono backing with an FG to the briad, so that if it gets down to it i have a bit of stretch and a knot in the mono to the spool that wont slip. Because of that it fills the reel up a bit before I even start with the braid. I also put PE2.5 on the 4000 so still had some left on the spool when the reel was full, the 6000 though even with the mono backing took the whole 300m and wasn't 100% full. I'd say it could have taken another 25m or so? My idea to fix it was the next time I spool i'll put a little extra backing. It wasn't so under spooled I was worried it wouldn't cast well or anything like that but yeah prolly like you just wanted to see the line flush with the top of the spool.
as for rods watch the vid were briggsy cavey went to the shop in the sheads with the gt table he tells alot is that vid what you should consider when choosing a rod
Briggsy thank you for sharing all your tips and tricks. I've learned so much from you. If you had to choose between a H or XH reel gear which would you pick and why? I want to replace my 2015 Saltiga 4000H for a 2023 6000. Here in the US our only option is XH in the 4000-6000 size. In your opinion is there much difference on how it feels when your winding other the it picks up line a little faster.
Hi Mate, I always go the fastest possible especially when using smaller reels, it takes less cranks to work your lures which is just nicer over long spinning sessions.
Hi Mate, personally I prefer one or two piece rods, the air portable ones with three or more pieces kinda do my head in haha. Spartans are Butt Joined two piece.
Looking at a few of the comments, having to afford expensive equipment to target fish like GT is a hard pill to swallow. The last thing you need is equipment failure when out on the water. 'You don't need a Ferrari to drive to work daily'. Fishing GT is not like fishing tilapia or bass, it's more to rock crawling than driving to work daily. You're cant use a city hatchback for rock crawling, you need an expensively kitted 4x4. 'Even if it breaks, you can buy 4 for the price of 1 of the more expensive reels.' If you lost a big fish while out on the water or if you're on a boat or island and your reel fails, you will fight anyone who says that to you. I ain't rich so I can only afford 2 sets with very different prices for a particular purpose. Ultralight I got a 6'4 bfs expride paired with an alphas sv tw 800 and the other combo is a china ul rod and okuma ceymar 800, guess which never failed to land me a fish even a 3kg Barramundi and which 1 has had multiple mechanical failures and tangles when fighting any sort of fish. For heavy I got a pflueger powerstick paired with a penn fierce while the other is paired with a kastking sharky of the same size. The penn fierce landed a 20kg & 31kg mekong without issue while the kastking sharky flexed like it was made of rubber when the drag was set to 6kg while being rated for 11kg.
Yeah I saw those comments, I think part of it too is out of a boat people have much more opportunity to hook good fish, so they're not as phased by losses. Landbased some of your hook ups are going to be once in a lifetime situation and if you're running cheap gear and lose it, that's definitely on you. If a 30kg+ GT smoked me on a Saltiga that's one thing but if I was using a lower level reel and the reel exploded mid fight and I lost it, I'd never forgive myself, and that's a GT. What if it was the one time in my life I connected with a Marlin landbased and an hour into the fight the reel broke...
The gear you have must be close to 20,000 I would think.. I am planning a trip to Oman for big GT's I can't wait so I will be adding some new rods and reels for my trip. Any tips please?
I think Briggsy and friends are used to overly expensive tackle. I love those guys.... but they are like high end guitar guys. They couldn't fathom playing on working class gear.. don't get me wrong, I enjoy using nice tackle.... but you don't need a ferrari to get to work on time.
Try gigging with a baseline Strat and see how long it stays in tune and fully working condition. Then see your mate next to you who forked out for a top shelf. They'll hand that guitar to their kids with original parts after years of hard gigging. No doubt they are expensive, but in my experience a $1000 reel lasts twice as long as a $500 and 10 times longer than a 200$ reel. If your not going hard or dont get out much and meticulously clean and maintain, then sure, the cheapest reel is fine. But once you add the costs of everything else to get to these mad spots for an extended trip, skimping on the quality of you setup will only spell disaster. I see so many people in 100k+ boats with kmart setups wondering why they don't get fish 😂. Take the tinny and a saltiga any day. (Btw i mean this as education from my experience, not a dig or argument)
I wouldn’t say Briggsy uses all high end tackle. Most of his rods are mid range, sure some of his reels are high end, but I would argue that reels are the best thing to invest tackle wise. I don’t think he’s a tackle snob at all!
@@jeffreyflynn2805 I think it's a case of diminishing returns as you go up in price. A Fin Nor Offshore, Penn Spinfisher/Slammer, Shimano Spheros/Saragosa will all hold up to big fish just fine... Even a Daiwa BG is an inexpensive reel that can hold up to big fish.... the saltist is essentially a BG with mag seal.. What you get in that top end price range is beautiful, incredibly well engineered reels, that offer mostly weight savings, finer attention to detail/QC, and refinement. But plenty of guys with Stellas have had them blow up... and some guys with old Quantum Cabos jig up big, crazy fish with them for years with necessary service. Is it worth the money over the reels I have mentioned? That's up to you... but the charter captains that I know.. guys who go after big tarpon for example, aren't stocking their boats with saltigas..... they are using spinfishers, spheros, saragosas, and even BGs... why? Because they can not only hold up to big fish, but also the abuse put on them by the clients. And if a client drops them overboard, the captain isn't out thousands. So in closing, you don't need ultra high end gear to catch big, bad fish.... but if you can swing it, it won't hurt you.... you just have to ask youself if the extra cost for refinement is worth it to you.
Hey Man, always wondered why all you Ausies chose to Saltiga over the Stella, I fish in South Africa and Mozambique for Tuna,Gt,Wahoo ext and I chose the Saltiga 14k over a Stella and do actually prefer it but the Stella is a lot more popular here in South Africa
I can't answer for all of Aus, and take this with a grain of salt because I'm sponsored by Daiwa, but from what I understand the new Saltiga's technically are in a league of their own and most people have caught onto it over here in Aus. Personally I've just always loved Daiwa reels and even before working with Daiwa I wasn't attracted to the Stella in the same way. Both land fish though so prolly comes down to the marketing in each country, word of mouth and current and past trends.
@@Briggsy thanks Briggsy, I have fished both reels and definitely prefer the Saltiga I do believe it is the marketing that benefits the Stella in SA as well as the Stella being cheaper than the Saltiga over here

my “heavy” setup at the moment is a PE4 setup, definitely do not have the budget for anything heavier, also do not chase fish big enough for PE10

thankyou for posting the gt fg knot too only way i do my fg took a bit to learn tho
Tbh, Tackle video more exicted than fishing video
Great vid mate!
BRIGGSY YOU LEGEND!
I’m surprised that you don’t carry a PLB (personal locator beacon) Briggsy, going to such remote locations and after the boat incident it would be an easy, small addition to the backpack
Grouse brother love the videos exited for the next trip good luck
Awesome weapon Briggsy
@@Briggsy thanks so much, I really appreciate the help. Love your videos!
I reckon high end reels and mid to low range rod as long as you rod doesn’t snap your good😂
Desde guatemala te veo , lastima que esas cañas no ay por aca bro , eh aprendido de tus videos saludos
Nice informative piece mate.
Nice film!!
I was told that the saltiga 18k has different gearing compared to the 20k .
20k for jigging big doggies for example and 18k for popping as faster retrieve.
Hi Mate, there’s two 18k’s 18000P and 18000H, P is 4.5 gear ratio H is 5.8 (which is the same as 20k 5.8). So I’ve got 18000H with 20k spool 👍
tbh i like penn personal preference don't mind daiwa but dont use shimano for gts and lower penn authority 9000 or 15000 for 700 is expenceive for some but keep in mind are you intending to use for long time or short time same as overheads you can use full metal like tic 30 to 130 or penn my advice do you research on the gear 1rst i use 5000 slammer 3 for small 1500 slammer for big 50wisw for sharks 50visx =50 narrow for ballooning sharks can use for marlin and tuna now after 7to 8 year using a 50 just got 80visw for big sharks and marlin dogtooth and tuna n swords tbh though don't start 80 50 or lower for beginner
great video briggsy! excited to see what you come out with next film wise. im finally getting the gear now to target bigger fish up the north coast of wa, and some friends and i have booked a 4 week trip starting late november, are there any tips you have for trying to teach people to fish?
Picking out fishing gear is simple, the difficult part is picking out gear on a budget.
Best Tats Ive seen
Love the videos and the banter. What are the wraps on your leader spools?
Hi Mate, those brands come with the wraps! Pretty handy for keeping the line in place 👍
@@Briggsy Thanks for the quick response mate! What strength would you recommend, 20lbs for PE3?
Fantastic info mate. How does the S80-6/8 go with 130g poppers?
We would love to see your soft plastics as well
... and what about shoes? I haven't found the right ones for rockfishing&wet wading, yet.
Briggzy, All you tackle is shiny like new one. How you maintenance your gear, if the reel i already know how keep it that. But your rod how you keep that in shape? how you can preserve it and not get many damage like scratch.😊👍.🎣🐟
More money on that table than in my bank account😂😂
Same haha
My dream rod and reel set up but can’t afford them 🤣 🐟🎣
Could I ask how much line you managed to get on your 23 Saltiga 6000 and 4000?
Cheers Briggsy 👊🤙👍👊🤙👍
Love this video!! I’m surprised you use monofilament not fluorocarbon.
Usually monofilament is stronger than fluorocarbon and works just fine.
I really like these vids :)
as for rods watch the vid were briggsy cavey went to the shop in the sheads with the gt table he tells alot is that vid what you should consider when choosing a rod
ua-cam.com/video/4BmUbhcXnTA/v-deo.html
Great video Briggsy! Do you still use TD Black reels? Looking at getting one but honestly my main selling point personally is the all black haha.
Hi Mate, nah I gave it away a while back. I hear you on the all black, I also used to love the look of the old DogFight too!
Hi Mate, I always go the fastest possible especially when using smaller reels, it takes less cranks to work your lures which is just nicer over long spinning sessions.
best setup🔥🇨🇱
Those malosi lures tho!! 🤙🏽
Amazing! How many parts do the Spartan Rods have? Would you ever recommend air portable versions, or would you always try to get bulk luggage options?
Hi Mate, personally I prefer one or two piece rods, the air portable ones with three or more pieces kinda do my head in haha. Spartans are Butt Joined two piece.
i wish i could get one of those saltiga 4k.
here i am playing with fuego 😂😂
im with the legalis
@@Briggsy that would be the kind of thing that haunts you probably for the rest of your life.
It's crazy I have p4 for my first surf setup😂
The gear you have must be close to 20,000 I would think.. I am planning a trip to Oman for big GT's I can't wait so I will be adding some new rods and reels for my trip. Any tips please?
I use the Saragossa with 37 kg with the saltist
I think Briggsy and friends are used to overly expensive tackle. I love those guys.... but they are like high end guitar guys. They couldn't fathom playing on working class gear.. don't get me wrong, I enjoy using nice tackle.... but you don't need a ferrari to get to work on time.
Potential video idea. Who can catch the biggest fish with the cheapest tackle.
Big fish destroy cheap reels
Great learning video briggsy,
Can i also put a 14000 spool on a 10000 saltiga previous model ? Greetings from holland
Hi Mate, not sure about the spool, you'll have to hit up Daiwa on email or Instagram and see if you can get a proper answer!
@@Briggsy thanks Briggsy, I have fished both reels and definitely prefer the Saltiga
I do believe it is the marketing that benefits the Stella in SA as well as the Stella being cheaper than the Saltiga over here
Great video Briggsy, any other recommended dry/fishing waterproof backpack similar to yours? Been searching with no luck. - Sydney, NSW.
