A doctor explains her preference for the chaotic world of the emergency room, while a first-year intern opts for the surgical realm. Also: parents of a toddler consider surgery to remove an aneurysm, which is judged to be the cause of her increasingly frequent seizures.
This is the medical reality series that started it all! Hopkins 24/7 was filmed in 1999, and the first time that ABC camera crews were allowed near unlimited access inside one of the nation's leading hospitals, Johns Hopkins. This is the prequel series to the 2008 Hopkins medical reality series on ABC. Episode 2 of a 6-part series.

1999 feels like just a few years ago to me. It kind of blew my mind when I realized he's been married for 21 years already and little Alex is about 25 years old now. Then I see your comment and suddenly feel very very old. Lol

I've been a nurse for over four decades. I love nursing. Learned something new everyday. Most doctors were eager to share knowledge and experiences with me. The human body will always remain fascinating to me.

When I was in the 3rd grade, I learned one of my friends there had half his brain removed for much the same reason. But outside some motor skill issues with his arm you would never know. He was just like the rest of us running around, playing, doing the same school work, it didn't impede him at all. It's amazing what the human body can recover from.
My dad was a Neurologist for almost 50yrs. When I was a kid he worked 7 days a week, never complaining. Happy Father's Day, Daddy. Miss you and love you.
yeah and im sure you never had to work a day in your life and never know what it feels like to be hungry, congrats on the life lottery, not everyone was so lucky...

I find it impossible to believe that physicians, residents, etc. can possibly perform at their best when they're so sleep deprived.

@@wilr.2594 The adrenaline rush isn't there when you put in orders and that can be dangerous. There's a lot of mundane paperwork that can affect the patient if done wrong.
@@utschemezmuer how do u know for sure that isn't the case? And besides even those who are not sleep deprived can equally make a mistake whether it be during surgery or with their orders (I'm sure they follow strict protocols) We were merely speculating and thought that's probably why he is able to to do his job. If this system doesn't work these ER doctors would have been notorious for causing harm than good. But I get your point there can be unintended consequences in doing it this way..

My grandson just finished his 1st freshman year pre med. I pray for him each day that he has the stamina to go all the way through. He is quite a person and will make a great doctor. Amen.
my dad spent the last 3 years in hopkins from his brain condition that killed him. hopkins is a great hospital i thank them for taking care of my dad as the best they can
Dr Carson spoke his explanations in the language that the stressed out scared out of their minds parents could I understand from the get go. Thats some above and beyond doctoring.

I thought, That couldn't possibly be THAT Dr. Ben Carson! But it was. Amazing.
ER has been my specialty for years after I tried surgery and hated it lol. It’s always busy, you are usually never bored cause you never know what’s coming through the doors, and yet once you’ve made a patient disposition, you can stop worrying about that patient. Once you are off your shift, you can leave it all behind, which is a nice sense of freedom. The major downside is that I really missed being able to find out how things turned out especially the serious cases. I’ve taken care of a newborn with meningitis, delivered a baby on Mother’s Day, defibrillated and intubated scores of people, and had the very tough responsibility of delivering devastating news to families. It’s very emotionally draining, you don’t take breaks, and if you are female, there is still a misogynistic wall you have to deal with. This is a pretty good example of my job.
So happy for all medical people that had the courage to finish this occupation.All the suffering they went thru to help others
Crazy that I was just watching this many years ago and now I am part of this team.
I DO NOT want to be treated by a Dr that is that SLEEP deprived!

I was active duty Navy and worked ER for 2 years before I had to transfer. I loved working ED and miss the comradery and chaos. Now completing my Bachelors in Nursing, after my Master of Public Health and have been asked how I felt about working ED. My reaction: YES! PLEASE!!!
Thank you for your service people like you save lives. You have a special calling. What you do is more than a job... it's a vocation.. keep up the great work. God reward you for your service 🙏 I pray for people like you. Your family must be very proud of you.

Dr. Ben Carson is a top tier Surgeon and human being.
The hours that the dr’s, interns,ect are made to work is absolutely rediculous. I would NOT allow any of them to work on me. They are so overworked and sleep deprived that it’s dangerous and should be against the law!!!!!!!!! If anyone has been sleep deprived you’ll understand how the mind can not think straight. Very sad but thank you all for everything you do to help others💖💖💖💖
As a person with epilepsy, I feel really bad for the little girl who has epilepsy and her parents who feel helpless. Years ago I thought about having brain surgery to help cure my epilepsy but some people thought I was nuts but my response was it sounds better to have the seizures stop with the brain surgery and have to relearn things than just suffering from the seizures. But after the evaluation, I was told my seizures were in an inoperable area. Was very upset for a while. I hope all goes well for this little girl. Prayers for both her and the parents. It isn't easy for the parents either.

My heart goes out to epilepsy patients, especially very young children. After years of debilitating seizures, My son had laser oblation surgery 4 years ago. Amazingly, he has been seizure free ever since. The downside is that the damage to his brain from the grand mal seizures is permanent. It takes a toll on the whole family.

@@scottiehall8695 You will never understand the mind of an addict. It is a choose when they first use. You have to take into thought some addicts are born with mental health issue's and addictive personality disorder which is genetic. Watch what you say. Karma comes 10 fold.

The people I know who have gone through such a thing were exceedingly changed- in personality, mentally & physically disabled. I hope she ended up better than that. 💔
She graduated high school and went to college to study child therapy from what i have read online. Absolutely incredible little people are.
I am very surprised that the little girl was not taken to a pediatric hospital. 🤷🏽♂
As a parent with chronic conditions and epilepsy I completely understand why they are stressed.. but god damn.. let the doctors work!
27 years+ epilepsy patient, I understand the parent's frustrations. And the feeling that the doctors are doing squat. I am in a new state and I haven't gotten comfortable with my neurologist.

That woman was extremely rude and ungrateful. I get that her child had a complicated course that the doctors couldn't just figure out right off the bat. But damn, let them do their work. They have the degrees and years of study and training. Rhey work over 120 hrs in a week in many cases. Show a little gratitude
In all likelihood i will never go this hospital nor meet any of these doctors but i have the deepest of love & respect for u.U r the true living gods.
I was living in Indianapolis in the late 1990s when a coworker had to have the brain surgery done on his son because of repeated seizures. I met the boy several times before and after even years later and he recovered completely. Never a sign of any kind from disconnecting the offending side of the brain. He wasn't happy about the haircut.
140 hours work week?? How is that even possible? There is 168 hours in a week. That's insane!
Normal for residency. That's why I didn't apply to med school. I'd love medicine, but I become useless when sleep deprived.

It's insane! As someone else said, I don't want to be their patient in that 140th hour. And tradition really isn't an argument, let alone a good one. It's like saying seatbelts are overrated because we used to drive cars without seatbelts and most of us were fine. Yeah, but cars didn't come with 200hp then!
Luckily the ACGME put rules in during the 2000s, essentially limiting resident hrs to an average of 80 hrs per week per program. Now, does every program 100% abide by those rules? Idk. They get in trouble if they don’t, but I believe that was the right thing to do.
I absolutely LOVE how proactive and involved this family is with the 3.5 year old girl. This is how parents SHOULD BE when dealing with these kind of situations. SPEAK UP, ask questions, and don't be afraid to say "No!"
Dalester1979 However, this is one of the top hospitals in the world with a wealth of medical minds. They quickly determined it was not an aneurysm, which hugely affects their next step. And that next step requires many docs opinions and plan.
I absolutely love how these parents acted. If you can't trust these experts, go elsewhere. All I see are concerned parents who can't keep their cool and come off as absolute dicks.

Dr. Carson is wonderful. My son has a tumor around his optic nerve. Carson was his doctor. My son was 17, turning 18 at that time. I allowed my son make the decision about having surgery to remove the begnin mass. Because of the risk of losing his vision along with other things my son choose not to have the surgery. He's 33 now. Still has the tumor but is good. Dr. Carson operated on my nephew because he was born with his skull fused. ( no soft spot ). He truly is a kind man and a skilled surgeon.
Dr.Carson is an amazing man! Hope the little girl is happy and healthy. God bless.

OMG ....That's Dr. Ben Carson.....I just love him, his demeanor and he is renown as a doctor with John Hopkins. Carson also refined a technique known as hemispherectomy, in which one-half of the brain is removed to prevent seizures in persons with severe epilepsy.
I've never understood why they make doctors work such long hours. I wouldn't want a doctor performing surgery on me that is at the end of a 48 hour shift with no sleep.
Because historically there weren't too many and they actually resided in the hospital. But the medicine was never that complex, so it really should be changed.

I know right. Even truck drivers have to stop and sleep before driving and thats WITHOUT my heart in their hands.
It used to be that way with pilots too, although now everything is computerized, and hours of flight have been reduced.
However, I agree...WHY on earth are the most life-saving/life-threatening positions always the ones that are exhausted, when your own brain has to do your very best work? It really is outrageous.
Because even if you drive your car while sleepy...it's like driving drunk.
Same here. When I gave birth my anesthesiologist was talking about how he works 24 hour shifts. I was thankful my epidural worked because I was thinking now I know why a lot of epidurals are not done right and don't work.
Thank goodness that gorgeous little Alex is doing so well. Good luck to this little darlin. I hope she has a long happy life. How amazing are doctors that can perform these procedures that give people a new life. Thanks to them all. It is horrid to see how much of a toll the years of studying etc takes on them. And the hours they have to work. It is far too much too expect in my opinion.

Dr chistina is an interesting woman. from climbing on mt everest, rendering medical aid in poor countries, to rendering medical air to people after hurricanes. Shes awesome

I’ve been in the hospital numerous times with several preexisting conditions. My doctor has told me I’m not supposed to be alive today. She called me a miracle.

I worked as an rn in the neonatal icu there in the 80's. The residents would usually work 3 24 hour days and one 8 or 10 hour day straight, then have one day off. They would sleep until it was time to come back. There has been federal legislation that has greatly improved the hours.
@@jsccrna1744 I'm so stunned to learn of these conditions for the medical professions. A place where it's of the utmost importance to be well rested and of clear mind, in order to diagnose and treat the patients who are brought to them. I would I would have to assume that anyone who's so sleep-deprived is actually working in a state of unconsciousness even though they are walking, their minds would have to be asleep and running on automatic? Making it much more difficult for critical thinking and analysis. I'm no expert on this subject but it's common sense at least tells me that. I am DEFINITELY GLAD to hear there's been changes in the reduction of medical personnels workloads!!

Just watching every face in hopes to see my cousin that was a resident in J.H. He once did a great paper on Dr. Ben Carson, his hero next to his own father that's also trained at J.H. and was very well known there in pediatric anesthesiology/PICU.

3 days with no sleep, and week after week of complete exhaustion, how is that a good thing with peoples lives in your hands, why is it necessary to drive these interns so hard...
It's amazing that they can do that. Must be on some kind of drugs. Otherwise, how is this even possible.
They do this because a surgeon has to be able to perform emergency surgery with little or no sleep. The medical field is rough but when you have that minute to catch your breath, you realize just how much you truly love your job

Neuroplasticity in babies and young children is amazing, but I'm glad we have things like implantable neurostimulators that can halt seizures in adults.

He has such a familiar face so I looked him up, and lo and behold he is one of the fabulous doctors that did my breast reconstructive surgery in Colorado 9 years ago. Not only a fantastic doctor but also a good human being. He and Dr. Jeremy Williams I will forever be grateful for the sacrifices they made to help other s.

This show is heart wrenching. That little girl... Alex... her parents acted all huffy and angry at having to wait for a diagnosis... yet they took that child home? Get her away from them... off the dang bottle and hopefully someone else could make better choices for that girl. The "mom" kept repeating that there were 2 other kids at home. Good grief.

She is doing amazing, she is my cousin. She works and just got her license and bought her own car. She is and always will be our little miracle.
Ben Carson is a great physician and a great American.
You can tell how much Grey's Anatomy really took from Hopkins 24/7. Right down to the fact that Derek fly fishes (something that the main intern said he wouldn't mind doing as another occupation) and Joe's the bar across the street from the hospital in Grey's (Jimmy's Diner in Hopkins 24/7)
Grey's Anatomy is absurd because it shows heart surgeons doing brain surgery and ER doctors running MRI scanners. None of that stuff would ever happen in a real hospital.

I remember working with a doctor. A urologist surgeon who kept falling asleep in clinic because he didn’t get any sleep. His patient had arrived and we were trying to wake him up. I feel so awful for the lack of sleep they get, but the system absolutely needs to sleep. I’m just glad he didn’t have any surgeries scheduled that day.

I understand those parents of that little girl were stressed out but to talk to surgeons like that is really rude. Think about what those drs have to do, resources they have, On top of making the right decision for the patient without doing something they can legally be held responsible for. I was in a burn unit worried once about a family member, and i would never talk to medical staff that way.
I have so much respect for nurses and doctors who are so overworked but carry on and do their jobs

That is awesome and just amazing how they can remove half the brain and she can do as much as the kids her age can do. God is GREAT !!!!!!!!! There is no other answer for such a wonderful outcome. Those doctors are awesome as well.

Kind of scary watching this if the doctors aren't getting the sleep it makes sense how things can go wrong many times
i’m sorry and i understand alex’s parents but they also need to realize that their daughter is not the only sick patient in the hospital and other patients take precedence over her.
I know they are under a lot of stress, but they are really being unreasonable. Especially the mother.

There’s no reason the attending docs need to talk to the residents that way ! They were in that position at one time.
I agree .. that really bothered me .. it’s just not the way to talk to someone .. as long as the patients get good care that’s all that matters really .. or would to me if I was the patient being treated .. these people are human , working ungodly hours , no time to eat or sleep ...it’s a wonder they know their own name ...

Watching this in 2023 and seeing Dr Carson before he was a Presidential candidate is enlightening, seeing how smart he is in medicine, and what buffoons so many politicians are.
My Son, right out of college, went into Investment Banking and worked 100 hrs./week. BUT he wasn’t responsible for other peoples lives!!
If your a person that prays. Throw in a thank you to God for all health care workers Doctor's that take on things that I know I couldn't even think of trying or think of doing that help people stay alive. I'm good and other emergencies that's why I took that route in my life what's going with these people to is an absolute blessing that they exist do these things for us God bless them all!
Alex's parents are unreal... intentionally difficult and demanding towards the people caring for their child is mind blowing!
I think mommy is a bit of an attention seeker. She is really over bearing. If they don't operate on this child, she won't have a chance.
