@Gordon Williams yea. i’m a beginner fiddler but i am heavily leaning towards the cajun style. it’s more a supportive instrument in Cajun. more rhythmic
I'm not a fiddle man, but I am a musician. Go Mr. Gimble. Man oh Man, that man can handle that fiddle. He stepped up to the mic and controlled it, not the other way around. A fan forever Mr Johnny Gimble
Years ago my husband and I went to Floore's in Helotes Texas to see (dance) Ray Price. Mr. Gimble was playing with Price. They did "Maiden's Prayer", 4 fiddles, to this day I get goose bumps thinking about it. I've always liked that song but this was so good I danced with tears rolling down. Something about a perfect sound, regardless of the genre, when it's perfect it flips a switch in my brain. Johnny Gimble is great on any recording but live, I look like my dog died even though I'm in heaven.
Many of the best, that's for sure. But, Vassar recorded some of the most unique, cool albums for a fiddler. Check out "Superbow,", and Vassar Clements "1975."
This is not about musicianship, although they've got it in spades, its about talent, which currently, we have no units of measurement, except "off the scale..."
As a fiddle player myself, here's how I rank them: 1) Johnny Gimble - easily the best of them all. Bounces the bow and creative variation 2) Vasser - Lots of sweet slurs with strong bow accents 3) Charlie Daniels - Like his bowing style although he's not super polished. Nice little variation 4) Mark O'connor - Puts too many grace notes in for my taste. Skill just for skill's sake. 5) Buddy Speicher - Pretty much straight up playing. 6) Shorty - Did not sound tight. Perhaps its the band or the drums or he is used to being accompanied by "boom chuck" contest guitarists. 7) The purple guy
This is very close to the ornamentation I have imagined for YEARS on A.T...... only I include far more classical styling ornaments..... hopefully I can get to practice more. What a shame there is so much anti-classical prejudice in “fiddle playing”. No vibrato etc. No wonder there is so much violence today in America.... you guys are too damn rough
Not sure which "fiddle players" you are listening to, but vibrato is definitely involved in the art form. Where exactly in this piece would you apply vibrato?
@@apostasiaelegcho5612 in a variation dedicated to is use. If you play violin, I leave it up to you to imagine exactly where. That’s kind of “proprietary”, like asking a corporation for the detailed recipe to a terrific product
@@dougr.2398 Ok. Well, the answer is very subtly on a resonating ending note of a passage. However, in what is known as a "breakdown" as is played in this video, there's a very limited amount of opportunity for that to occur since most of the phrases are generally tied together leaving very little room for such an occurrence since the sustain generally is for an incredibly brief moment which often is overkill. If you listen to a waltz performance, for example, you'll quickly realize that vibrato is most certainly applied to this style of music. Lastly, most champion-level "fiddle players" today are classically trained, as well. I know several that have taken the bench in an orchestra. So, the anti-classical bias in "fiddling" that existed until the 80's, no longer is present. Mark played a major role in that happening. An example of that would be several classical recordings he created through Sony Classical Records. Best wishes.
Why do you liberals always have to ruin everything with your retarded political opinions.? This performance is not about politics but you will say it is because for liberals everything is politics. What makes you think others will appreciate your boorishness?
Legends galore and all of my heroes including mark o’ Connor
Why is it that Johnny Gimble makes me so happy just to listen to him?
probably that extra string on his fiddle
Vassar! Love this....saw him in 1971, Bean Blossom. And Doug Kershaw...who was terrific as well.
It's just the fact that the tape goes radge when the radge fiddler plays. Sublime.
who was the Radge Fiddler
@Gordon Williams yea. i’m a beginner fiddler but i am heavily leaning towards the cajun style. it’s more a supportive instrument in Cajun. more rhythmic
Brought tears to my eyes.
Wow sweet - thks for sharing - great job - be blessed & thank you - wonderful :-)

Mark's natural talent, his ease, his sense of rhythm, swing, musicality, I don't think we've ever heard anything like it
they were all good!!!
Vassar Clements had a sound and style all of his own
Vassar and Gimble on the same stage....mind blown
Who’s Who of fiddlers. ...and look at that Crazy Cajun play the Arkansas Traveler!
Man, don’t you know a Cajun can play anything? Just like a Cajun can - and will eat anything!
Excellent! Just needed Byron Berline to finish the lineup!
The left hand position at 2:20 is driving me crazy, this is what i get for being a classical violinist.
He often changed his grip depending on the music he was playing. He was a violinist for the Nashville symphony for many years in the 60's.

LEGENDS!!!!!!
they all slayed
Buddy Speicher (guy with the White Hat) is a PA boy from DuBoise Pa/
The one fellow on the far left was so chill :)
Vassar Clements

hahah i didn’t expect o’connor to sound like that
That's So Cool! :)
WOW
SO COOL !!!
Remember the "Arkansas Traveller" Album from Michelle Shocked
Still don't care man my old uncle showed this to me and I am a young guy but this s*** is impressive😂💯
❤
Telling you about the best that you can get
WOW!
Thank goodness for your support Akansaw😺🙏🏻.
que hermoso! claro, pero nosotros solo vivimos en guerra, cuando nos levantaremos?
Johnny Gimble played the best version IMO. mosrite60
He always does!
...in my opinion : )
which number was he. i feel stupid but i only knew 4 of these guys
@@chazworm3 Ok. First Mark, Vassar, Buddy Spicher, then Johnny Gimble, Charlie Daniels, etc. all good
Wow
I wonder what Michel Warlop would make of this???
Who???
Michel Warlop. He's French.
Look for his Christmas Swing and other tunes here on YT.
Charlie Daniels are not even in the same league as the others, in terms of playing ability, but style and showmanship count.
And Kershaw is?
waou
I've seen a lot of good versions of this song -- and there are definitely better, but this is just a BUNCH of really good violinists in one stage...
actually Doug !
They were all good (kershaw was "questionable"), but Johnny Gimble absolutely "kicked @ss and took names" with his version!
Yea but if you watch, Buddy got their undivided attention!
Gordon Terry?Whatever happened to GT?

Where was you Greg ?
Must have overlooked
you !
I can tell what kind of "fiddle player" you are by your critique. lol.
Incorrect on every level
Good, even excellent - but heroes?

@Bowen Smith I know the reason very well. I’m classically trained and I know the differences
@Bowen Smith I’m familiar with the reason

TOOOOOO M-F-ing Fast !
kjh
whose the purple clown?
Doug Kershaw
Thomas Webster ...he was still funny...just sayin!
Lol right he looked like he was being a court jester or something, haha!
he's pretty awesome to be a clown!!
Keshaw played with much gusto, from Louisiana, his soul on the strings.
Love Doug but was he out of tune?
He's a maniac, but ya gotta love him.
@@robertmcnorth8317 - this one is roast meat n' drink to the Ragin Cajun. Suspect if it sounds out of tune it's just his take on it
Vassar Clements makes it look so easy!
Electric fiddle.
.ugh
Sounds like a bee stuck in a box.
Next “Heroes” can we see some women mentors?
Feel free to make one if that's what you think is important.
Is Doug on Meth. or what?
Sorry to say this, but Charlie and Doug shoulda stayed at the house.
Love you Mark but can you make Charlie Daniels not one of your heroes due to his latest political rants
So????
