"Arkansas Traveler" - Tashina Clarridge - Camp Sumner Sessions

  • It was a another warm week in Weiser this year during the National Old-time Fiddler's Contest. On a toasty Tuesday afternoon a few musician friends shared some shade and a few tunes beneath the three red umbrellas at Scott and Anne Sumner's camp. Tashina kicked things off with one of the most classic fiddle tunes of all time. Most viewers no doubt will notice the unusual choice of bow, but Tashina gives a little bit of an exclamation for it in the forthcoming videos from this particular jam session.

    I recall a midnight session at Weiser in 1983 with a half-dozen of the worlds foremost Texas style fiddlers sitting around a campfire. Junior Dougherty walked in after a tune had started and took his turn doing a rides as the tune was handed off round and round from one fiddler to the next for over a half an hour. When the tune finally ended, he asked what it was they'd been playing. Sally Goodin.
    In this style there will eventually be a half-dozen tunes: the D riff, the A riff, the G riff, the C riff, the Bb riff and the F riff...and maybe E.
    R.I.P. old-time fiddlin'.

      Howdy, +ozwzrd. First off, let me welcome you to the Joy of Fiddling channel. Secondly, I am sorry to hear you feel that Old-time fiddling has left the building. Your comment is not the first time that sentiment has been expressed on this channel and I am sure it will not be the last. The Joy of Fiddling prides itself on encouraging open dialogue where varying opinions can be voiced and I am glad that you could speak your mind. I will say though that I do not feel that the future of Old-time fiddling is so bleak. I have been listening to people ring the funeral bell for Old-time fiddling since I was a kid back in the 1970s. And while no doubt, audience attendance has been dwindling gradually over the years since then, it is my humble observation that the quantity of fiddlers and the quality of the fiddling has increased. I see new faces, young and old, at every fiddle contest or festival I attend. The skill level and passion for the music of these young musicians is astounding. And the fellowship these kids display when they play music together warms my heart. These kids are the future of this music and the future of this music is in good hands.
      I have been hearing for over 40 years that Texas style fiddling was going to be the demise of Old-time fiddling. And yet I see evidence to the contrary. A simple search on UA-cam will yield countless more videos featuring Old-time style than what would be deemed Texas style, contest style, or progressive style. Search online for fiddle music to purchase and you’ll easily find infinite options for Old-time, Celtic, Bluegrass, Contra Dance, Cajun/Zydeco, Canadian, Mexican, etc and so on….but NOT Texas style. (Benny Thomasson albums excepted) Old-time fiddle events like Clifftop, Galax, Augusta. and others are alive and kicking. Well attended by participant musicians and audience members alike…and it would be highly unlikely that you would hear any Texas style fiddling on those stages or in campground jam sessions.
      I will never forget reading a public statement made by a well-known Old-time fiddling advocate, who compared Texas style fiddling to an invasive weed and described Texas style jam sessions as “testosterone fests”. (that last reference not only an insult to Texas style fiddling…but to all the amazing female fiddlers who play Texas style) When I hear things like that, I am reminded of the people who rioted at Stravinsky’s “Rites of Spring”. The Folk music puritans who booed Bob Dylan when he plugged his guitar into an amplifier. And all the critics who began hammering nails into the coffin of jazz music, when a pioneer visionary adventurer took the music in a new daring, unfamiliar direction. The only time I fear for the future of fiddling, is when style cliques develop and profess one flavor of fiddling superior or inferior to another. Or that an individual's musical self-expression is not worthy or valid unless they color within the traditional lines and follow strict rules ordained by…..who?
      All art forms are at risk for dying out but only if they do not grow and evolve. I like to think of fiddling as a living breathing entity. Not a sacred artifact to be locked up in a museum time capsule. Fiddling is best served when all of us, no matter what our preferred style of playing, stick together. We are all members of the greater fiddle family. We all worship at the same musical alter of this instrument. So take heart… I do not see old time fiddling going anywhere anytime soon. Texas style has not, nor will it ever, usurp Old-time style. As for Mr. Daugherty's quip at that jam session… my family has known Junior since the mid-1970s and one thing about Junior that I will never forget (besides his fiddling) is his wonderfully dry understated sense of humor. It seems incredible to me that Junior would not recognize “Sally Gooden" being played no matter what the circumstances of style or fiddlers present, and I would wager his comment was more an expression of his well known wit, rather than anything else. But while my family and I were all over the campground in Weiser during the 3rd full week of June 1983, and attended many a jam session, I cannot state for the record we were present at the particular jam session in question. I appreciate you stopping by the Joy of Fiddling channel and I hope you visit again.

Scott's reaction to having a camera strapped to his guitar was about how you would a imagine a dog might react if you forced it to wear a bow tie, top hat, and tap shoes.

    Bravo Tashina. You are a skilful girl playing the violin and the boys are skilful bachelors accompanied their violinist. The composition is more jazz than country, isn't it? I just want to know why Tashina has the bow so much stretched? Is the composition better to play with a highly stretched bow ?

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  4 роки тому +1

      Hello, mpospisil101. You make a very good observation about the style in which Tashina is playing this very traditional Old-time fiddle tune. There are an untold number of different fiddle styles out there in the world and Tashina is quite adept at more than a few of them. But while she is playing an old school fiddle tune standard, she is performing it in a more progressive and improvisational style. Which is where I believe you are getting the "jazz" vibe. The style depicted in the video has different labels for different folks: "progressive style", "contest style", "Texas style". But the key component is an emphasis on variation and improvisation...much like jazz. Some strict traditionalists frown upon this style of fiddling while others, like myself, feel it is healthy to push musical boundaries and allow the individual fiddler to express themselves in the moment. I believe it's one of the reasons the fiddle is one of the greatest instruments of personal artistic expression. As for the bow Tashina is playing with, many have asked about it in the comments sections of the videos. It is a baroque style bow and the honest answer is, there was no specific reason or intent for her using this bow on the day the videos were shot. It was just all she had on hand at the moment and she wasn't going to let it stop her from jamming with friends.

    • @mpospisil101
      @mpospisil101 4 роки тому

      @@joyoffiddling Hello Joy of Fiddling. Many thanks for your answer which made me very happy. I myself am an amateur violinist and I play mainly country music, domestic country and American country, sometimes Irish country. The style of music that the band plays is very interesting and I have never met such one. I was very interested in this music video, because about half a year ago I discovered and enthusiastically watched old American country music performed by Vivien and Phil Williams. Tanishina has a similar style of playing the violin as Mrs. Williams. But the band together gives the old American music such a character as jazz. Really interesting and nice combination of an old and a modern music.
      Go ahead Tashina and the boys and the other one girl playing guitar. See the attachment ua-cam.com/video/Vicu4hljs1U/v-deo.html

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  4 роки тому

      @@mpospisil101 I have known Vivian and Phil since I was a youngster. (Rest in peace, Phil.) While I believe Vivian would consider herself more of a traditionalist, she too has a very unique and distinct style to her playing. To expand a little further on your jazz reference, another reason you are hearing that flavor is that the originators of Texas style fiddling were greatly influenced by jazz violinists like Stephane Grappelli, Svend Asmussen, Joe Venuti, Stuff Smith, and others. And Western Swing bands, most specifically Bob Wills. While some of the early Texas style pioneers were capable of playing straight ahead jazz tunes, their major contribution to fiddling was to take the energy, drive, bluesy "swang", and improvisation of jazz and incorporate it into the traditional breakdown fiddle tunes. I would recommend you dig a little deeper on this channel and sample the work of Daniel Carwile, Katrina Nicolayeff, Jesse Maw, Calvin Vollrath, and others who are carrying on the tradition of pushing the boundaries of traditional fiddling but each "singing" the tunes in their own voice. Clicking on the "Playlists" link on the Joy of Fiddling channel is a short cut to all those folks and more.

      @@joyoffiddling Thank you very much again for your answer and for your explanation of the context of the technique of playing the violin with the addition of jazz, playing energy and improvisation. I repeat once again that I am an amateur violinist and I play for amateur spectators and listeners. Nevertheless, thank you for giving me a brief guide to listen to some of the artists who are (or were) professionals in this music. Greet Tashina from me, and may she prosper, may the accompanying bands prosper, and may you prosper, certainly one of the members of this artistic ensemble. Greetings from the Czech Republic.

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  4 роки тому

      Ahoj, @@mpospisil101 ! Honored to hear from Czechia. No need to declare yourself an "amateur". I am a fiddler who has been paid to fiddle, but I have never described myself as a "professional" fiddler. Some of the greatest musicians in the world, on every instrument and in every genre, are "amateurs" you may never hear about. The vast majority of the musicians I feature on the Joy of Fiddling channel do not make their living performing music. This is intentional. I believe the best music does not always take place on a screen or a stage, but rather in kitchens, garages, living rooms, campgrounds, back yards, front porches, and parking lots. The musicians on this channel play this music because it beats in their hearts and they can't live without it. That is why I focus my camera on them. The greatest thing about music is never about what you get paid or how much prize money you win. It's about what you feel when you play it. So, no need to say you are an amateur musician. You are a musician.

      @joyoffiddling  2 роки тому +1

      Hey @Jim Dubya. Sorry you didn't enjoy this video. If I may offer perhaps a little context and clarity, the kind of music your are describing with banjo, mandolin, guitar taking breaks, is, as you know...bluegrass. The style of fiddling Tashina plays here is most definitely NOT bluegrass. For the record, we LOVE bluegrass! But this is not a bluegrass channel and while one may see videos where a bluegrass tune is played, none of the fiddlers, pickers, or pluckers featured on this channel would proclaim themselves to be bluegrass musicians. There are countless styles of fiddling, and we all have our favorites, and perhaps we're not as fond of a few. But there's room for everyone. One person's "boring" is another person's "beautiful".
      And for what it's worth, Jim. A word to the wise...unless the individual is your girlfriend, wife, or daughter, most women aren't too keen on being addressed as "Honey."
