fun fact: some parts of the opening scene of Robocop 2 were filmed on Texas ave just a little down from that big oak tree. My mom was a cop in Baytown and was working security during the filming. I got to watch a few takes of a scene from about 100 yards away.

Born and raised there amazing times as a kid. Then moved to California, which if I would have stayed I would have been married to my childhood best friend and had a family I just know it. Cali screwed me up. I now want to go back and buy my grandparents old house. Thanks so much for bringing back great memories!

Born in old Baytown Hospital in 1950. Went to James Bowie and Stephen F Austin Elementary before moving to Houston In 1962. My mom and older brothers all went to Cedar Bayou Jr High and Lee High School which was Baytown only High School back then. Had we not moved I would of gone to Cedar Bayou and Sterling. I live 850 miles away now but do still visit every 3 years or so and I always drive around the town. Went to many movies at the old Brunson and Sears and Western Auto was by the old Oak Tree. My grandfather retired from Humble Refinery in 1955 which is now Exxon/Mobil after working there 40 years. I-10 was built when we lived there.

Nice! I went to Stephen F. Austin as well. But not even close to the time period you went. I finished 5th grade there in the early 90's. Sadly that school was demolished and replaced at the same site in the mid-90's. The only thing that still stands is what "was" the gymnasium when I attended. I doubt it had been built when you were there. It was a yellow steel building that stood separate from the rest of the school. It was located behind the cafeteria. Apparently it is used for storage these days and has a plaque on the side dedicating it to a past gym teacher who happened to be there when I attended. That was a really unique school. What stands out in my memory is the way those hallways where covered almost as if they were indoor but they were not sealed like indoor hallways. Rain would come in on the sides and fall into drainage grates that ran along the entire length. Who knows, when you were there it may not have been covered hallways. I can only imagine how that school evolved through the decades. I have tried very hard to find old photos of the school from any era on the internet but have been unsuccessful.

@@treloarw- Stephen F Austin opened in 1958. We lived in Cedar Bayou and I went to James Bowie in the first grade then transferred in the second grade in 1958 the fist year of Stephen F Austin. I would of went to Cedar Bayou Jr High I think now they call them middle schools where my mom and all my older brothers went for the 7th grade but we moved to Houston. I moved to Tennessee in 1987 but I still have family and friends in Houston that I visit about every 3 years and always drive around Baytown and the Cedar Bayou area to see what’s changed. I know they had rebuilt Stephen F Austin and no they didn’t have a gym when I was going there. The school class rooms where 1-3 grades on the front row with the auditorium and cafeteria on the right end looking at the school from the front and 4-6 grades were parallel to the 1-3 on the backside with about 75 foot of grass in the middle. It was horseshoe shaped. The left end was open to part of the playground. I hated when we moved away because Cedar Bayou was living in the country back then. We were right on the river on Fox Drive. The church at the start of this video on the right is where I was baptized. Then we joined what was then called Cedar Bayou Methodist Church. I really love going back for the memories. Where lived off of Fox Drive they now have huge homes on Cedar Bayou River. There’s was nothing there back then. My grandmothers house was still there when I last visited in 2021. We lived next door and they had just torn it down and built a new house their. My mom and brothers all attended Lee High School. It was the only High School in Baytown back then. Had we stayed I would of went to Sterling.

The old San Jacinto Mall there in Baytown is now an abandoned building ready to be demolished to make way for the new market place they plan on building there sometime. I remember my mom took me to that mall back in the day when it first opened & I was a little kid at the time. It was the place & I had many great memories visiting it when I was a kid. Back on January 4, 2020 it closed & only left JCPenney & Macy's left to stay open. JCPenney closed on October or November of last year & then Macy's closed this year back on February. Amazon & the pandemic are what killed many of the malls.

This is more of OBT (old baytown)
If you drive alittle further past 146 then it looks alot better and ALOT of businesses on garth road. Baytown has really exploded the last 13 years. The part of baytown is where our college and library is

I'm pretty sure Texas Ave looks way better 2 years later. They've been working on it. Friday night, it does actually bustle a little bit with people. There's a comic shop, a pool hall, hipster bars and everything. But of course the new side of Baytown is where all the people really are. A billion shops and restaurants.

After traveling all over Texas it is pretty obvious why no one ever said "Hey, let's go to Baytown!".
