So my husband walked in and sat down to watch this with me (streaming on the tv) and says about the Birkin “oh that’s a pretty plant,” and then on the Godzilla “oh that’s cool.”
So I filled him in, “babe, it’s an ugly plant video.”
He thought it was hilarious. 😂
Guess beauty is dependent on the eye of the beholder lol
That being said I don’t think the Birkin is ugly
Some of these are on the wishlist now 😭
I actually think the Philo Birkin looks very striking! Those stripes are so clear and clean along the leaves. I only just got one a few months ago and it looks so nice on my kitchen table. It did have a bit of transition shock and a couple leaves turned to goo but it's looking very healthy now. We'll see how it does in the future.
I really like my Birkin. The stripes are different and my OCD loves them. Lol
It’s loving it at my house and I couldn’t ask for an easier plant to care for.
I saved a smashed Birkin two years ago and now she is is so big and pretty!! Agreed!@@Lela-plants
Totally agree. It’s such a unique and pretty plant. There’s nothing else like it. Rare plant collectors don’t like it because it became “common” almost immediately.
I like Birkin too and agree to the rest including Jacklyn. 😅
Strawberry Ice kind of looks like a bunch or random organs that were just removed from someone in an emergency operation.
I really don't get why Alocasia Jacklyn is on the list tbh 😂 but to each their own. I've added a baby Jacklyn to my collection maybe 1-2 months ago. I really love it. The stems look very mushroom-y to me and the shape of the leaves is so unique. It opened its first true-to-form leaf about 2 weeks ago and it's currently unfurling the second, the ones it had when it arrived are still baby leaves. Is it a bit weird? Yea. Okay, a lot. The texture is really odd. But it's lovely in its own way. I have a few plants I got just because of how odd and out-of-this-world they are, and I know this one would fit, but no, I got the Jacklyn because I saw pictures and I fell in love ❤
EDIT: I sent this vid to a friend who is not into plants. For Mint Adansonii he said "it looks zombie" and I can't unsee it now 😂😂😂
Same! I love Jacklyn!
@@irinad.7802 right? And the more I look at it, the more it looks like something out of a movie. Like a plant you don't even expect to be real. It's giving LOTR vibes 😂 or Jurassic Park.
I love the Alocasia Jacklyn myself , they remind me of reindeer
I love jacklyn too
I never get the appeal of adonsonii ever since its launch. The latest version is more holes than leaves lol...
What! The Birkin is one of our most sold plants at our shop!!! People LOVE it
I used to agree on the Strawberry Shake. The leaves just look so muddy. But then I saw a really big one one. Taken as a whole, the plant was stunning. So, now I have a small one, and I’m on that long, slow road to having a big one and making it all worth it. 😂
I am the exact same!! I used to think it looked crap, but then I started to think otherwise so bought one, but then it reverted 😭
@@Screamsinlowpoly boooo!
They are incredible and they grow fairly quick.
I feel the same way about baby pink princess. Not very pretty young, but kind of impressive in the right spot in the right house. I still don’t have one because I can’t get past the ugly stage.
I spent $30 for my Birkin, and that was because it came in a decorative terra cotta pot. Now I have 12 from that one, and I love them.
I get why stores/shops sell plants like this...but it annoys me to pay more for a pot I really don't want just because they're selling the plant in it.😑
I got mine for like £8 ish and it was like four plants 🧍
@LimeyKat.....I, too like the looks of them but didn't know if the variegation will keep on them as they get older. Please comment your care and the amount of light for them if you will......thanks!
I got my Birkin at Trader Joe’s and promptly and irrevocably murdered it
I have had birkin for like a year. It doesn't get a lot of light and often gets underwatered but it doesn't seem to mind. Now that I look at it closely, the bottom leaves may be starting to fade. I actually had the opposite issue as on of the plants in the pot kept growing too much variagation. I had to cut it several times. The new leaves are still gorgeous, the growth pattern is very compact and over all the plant looks still amazing.
i feel like we missed an opportunity to call out variegated anthuriums/ those really marbley alocasia because they look sickening 😍😍🤩🤩
Lol, your emojis make me think you like them; ‘sickening’ can mean good or bad, of course, too. Haha. I agreed though, variegated Anthuriums are bizarre, and VELVET variegated Alocasias, like ‘Frydek’, or even ‘Polly’, are just odd to me. Like, nature is just “doing the most” visually and texturally. Something about variegated Alocasias really DOES (literally) look sick… like, you wouldn’t want to to touch them kind-of sick.
Yes and verigated watermelon Peperomia!
@@lucyloo8965 omg YES its too much omg i just looked it up 🤢🤢
I think we need to come up with a playlist called plantroversy and start with this vid lol
Bought a P. Bob Cee in 2021. It was 100 Euro and until today I sold 6 cuttings. When it grows bigger it is a really nice plant and it is indestructible. I do love it.
From the top of my head before watching the video:
-Alocasia plumbae 'Flying Squid' (still a cool plant)
-Alocasia macrorrhiza 'Stingray' (kinda awkward)
-Pilea peperomioides 'Mojito' (I try not to introduce any viruses into my plant collection and this plant is just rustling my jimmies)
-Philodendron Birkin when it's unhappy
-your aunt's crusty old Phalaenopsis that just survived the last decade on a table
-that grey, dusty "public office" Aglaonema
Edit: The last two obviously haven't been rare for decades.
I’d say one you forgot to include is literally ANY croton! They’re awful lol.
For whatever reason, I kind of like the color palette on the variegated black cardinals 🤷🏻♀️ It’s definitely not what I’m typically drawn to, but that one catches my eye for some reason. I don’t have one, and I’m not searching for one, but I’m thinking I’d probably buy one if I stumbled across it, lol. I enjoy hearing your planty opinions, thank you!
11:51 Actually in my experience the brandtianum needs so much humidity in order to put out a decent leaf... They always come out half formed or ripped
thats kinda why i say they're the mermaid humidity plants lmao
Agreed mine took well over a year before I got any size up from leaves it took a full 4ft pole before it started behaving
I agree! I have mine in a small terrarium and it grows really well. I just propagated it and it seems to be doing well too. 😊
@@jenvee9110 I'd imagine the humidity would help
I am giving mine away. Even after putting it on a moss pole in fairly high humidity ( >60) it still has deformed leaves that are very flimsey.
Unpopular opinion: 90% of syngoniums are crap and no amount of variegation can make me like them
I find this video hysterical . Loves silver hates Brandtianum, loves reticulated, hates the Jacklyn. Laughing so hard. I love this channel, but this gave me huge laughs
It's interesting to me how most of the time I'm on the same page with you on plants that look sickly, but I absolutely LOVE the Jacklyn (Reticulata too tho).
Also, I don't think it's hypocritical at all. How you feel about the way a plant looks (or how anything looks for that matter) is a very personal experience that just doesn't always seem to make sense. And I don't think it has to.
I think you should do ‘conventionally ugly plants’ that you actually like. For example: Joepii (even tho I’m absolutely obsessed with it as well).
I agree with all of them except the Alocasia tandurusa (Jacklyn). I love my Jacklyn that it’s actually one of my top 5 favourite plants in my collection. It’s so big and is currently able to hold on to 8 big leaves . The pattern is beautiful and it’s texture is so unique. And the mama plant is consistently producing corms that I have been gifting to my friends.
Yeah I was so surprised, one of the most cool looking plants ever, not ugly at all
How does it hold so many leaves? Mines huge but can only sustain two leaves. How much light do you provide and do you water/fertilize it a lot?
For me its the stingray alocasia and alike, they just kinda look like they didnt develop properly before unfurling and like theyll break off any second xD
I love the birkin!
This was entertaining I’d enjoy another video like this
Oh poor Birkin! I bought it maybe a year ago for cheap in a garden centre and I love it. The stripes actually scratch my calathea itch pretty well, which is awesome because calatheas keep dying on me. There is something about it that reminds me of calathea ornata or white star... I haven't seen any leaves fading so far, may it be maturity thing maybe? Or alternatively it takes a very, very, very long time..
I totally agree on Monstera Oceana. It looks like there is something wrong with it. I also have problems with Birkin - it is green .. totally green
Agree, the Oceana looks like it has Leaf Miner damage.
10:09 oh I adore my Bob Cee! He’s huge and the anchor plant for my variegated monsteras.
I’m obsessed with philodendrons with fingers like tortum and polypoidiodies 💚
Birkin is a good-looking plant, looks healthy, it's a sporty girl with a good figure, no flab, no flops
They are fated to be the one plant that go all white and die or the one who reverted to the imperial red genetics.
„Like something vomited on this” 😂😂 EXACTLY!!
Shingleing plants make my skin crawl. And I TOTALLY agree about the Brandtianum and Berkin. I do love the Jackolyn tho♡ Great video.
Plants like the strawberry ice, black cardinal & the one with patina looking leaves. I didn't care for them because the leaves (at least in the examples) looked like the plants were really dry or shriveling up.
Your video set up looked cool. Background, top, hair & makeup all a similar palette. 😎
i love how on so many levels I am agreeing and then there is the Jacklyn, I love that plant :D
Every single variegated Anthurium
💚💚💚Burn Gel at the pharmacy will help also Tylenol.
I have a Birkin and I love her. $20 at Walmart. She’s easy going, knock on wood 🪵 lol
I have to agree on most of these though. The color pattern and shapes. However I do think the Jacklynn is neat looking imo 🌱 💚💚💚
Also color hue just pepto bismo looking 😂
I fell for the Jacklyn because we share the name 😂. And I love it’s weirdness and it’s very unique in my collection
I have a Birkin and I personally like them
I agree about all of these especially the Jacklyn. The Zebrina is by far superior in that kind of pattern. However, my paraiso is grown in normal house conditions and he’s pretty damn nice.😉
Monstera oceana looks like something is on the leaves that I want to wipe off and clean!
Painted lady and yes please another. Also, I do like that you included ease of care.
The "ugly" syngoniums actually look good Halloween presents esp. the Strawberry Ice.
Ha ha ha!! I totally have a bin on nothing but Strawberry Shake cuttings and they’ve been in there so long that I forgot about them. Because they do nothing for such a long time 😂
I like the Jacklyn and the reticulata is on my wishlist
Just wanted to stop by and say you look absolutely gorgeous and your hair looks amazing! Have a great day Kaylee! ❤
I know her eye makeup is gorgeous!
She does, she looks so fit and her face is lovely. Good for her!
Shangri-la pothos is one of my favorites because its hideous lol
Any plant that looks like a bird crapped on it is a “no” for me😊
Can you do a video update of your Hoya collection and/or Hoyas you want to get in the near future?
I don't think I've ever disagreed with the British lady as much as I do in this video.
curious to see what other plants she dislikes 😂
I totally agree about the Syngonium strawberry ice, Adansonii mint, black cardinal vargata (absolutely HATE the look of this one), philodendron bob cee, philodendron Brandtianum, syngonium Godzilla, philodendron strawberry shake, Amydrium medium variegated.
I never liked the Brandtianum from pictures. But then seeing it in person I fell in love 😍
i remember being super excited when i heard black cardinal was variegated bc i thought “oh my god a black and white plant, what could be more perfect. but any variegation that’s brown is so ugly. people dodge yellow bc it can look sickly? no BROWN IS LITERALLY A DYING PLANT. the only plant i can slightly handle with brown is caramel marble and that’s bc it has a nice leaf shape. my personal thing with variegated plants is if the base plant already isn’t that interesting *to me personally* ahem philodendron erubecens, any self heading philo, or just anything with a simple leaf or leaf pattern, variegation doesn’t add anything worthwhile or can make the plant look even worse. i personally have zero interest in jose buono bc i find the leaf boring and the variegation doesn’t add much. id rather put up with the difficulty of a florida beauty bc i love the shape. does any of this make sense???
Can’t stand Brandtianum but not really because of the silver leaves. I don’t understand how it’s made it to garden centers as it’s so difficult to grow! It looks so ugly trailing, but if put on a pole it doesn’t want to behave either. New leaves constantly came out misshapen or stuck for me even though it’s not an erubescens. I’ve only ever owned 1 but I’ll never do it again. So many nicer silver plants out there.
I just got a strawberry ice. I had been wanting one. Its a starter but i tend to really love splotchy pink plants.
Love your outfit/ makeup combo
To each her own. It's awesome that there are so many varieties of plants so people can get what speaks to them.
IMO, the Birkin depends on the variegation. I love mine, but it's quite light colored. I love my Jacklyn and Godzilla. I think my Brandi is stunning. Strawberry Ice is on my wishlist. I love the mix of colors.
I agree so far except the Jacklyn is one of my favs, I love the funk it gives, just got a Paraiso Verde in a trade, wasn’t sure about it, thin leaves, looks a bit sickly, but it’s “growing on me” I’m not a fan of very many syngoniums at all, they all look frail and sickly to me. I have a Philo birkin though, it’s just different, strawberry shake looks unwell to me, not for me, nor any begonias, not attractive with those hairy leaves,
LOL I love my Paraiso Verde -- but I had to park it directly under a grow light to get the variegation back (and I don't disagree with a single thing you say about it, either!)
I don't quite love my Birkin, but I don't hate it, either. It's almost the opposite of the Paraiso Verde, too much light and the leaves turn all white and die and it just gets ugly fast. I've had to chop off all the top twice because it was all white and sickly. I picked a plant (from the garden center) that was one Birkin and a pair of Congo Reds in the same pot. Reds are enormous and healthy and look so much better than the Birkin ever will.
I've seen so many adansonii mint 'frosty freckles' in stores and wow, if you wanted a mint that looked even more sickly, there you go 🤮
Your hair is so icy rn, I’m loving it! 💕
I could listen to you talk shit about ugly plants all day 😭😂😂😂
slayyy kaylee, hair is amazing
Wow beautiful Plants ^^
Like it
My friend, thank you for good sharing
I don't know maybe it's something wrong with my taste but I LOVE every single plant on this list...especially the syngonium godzilla...
LMAO.. THIS WAS GREAT!! Watching you shit talk plants made me laugh!!
I totally agree with you on the two alocasia. The zebrina is so cute.
Also, are you planning on doing a rare plant index for Epipremnum?
Oh no I just ordered a strawberry Ice! Lol...we will see...gonna show it on my channel when I get it...couldn't really tell what was going on in the photo, but I took a shot.
Hope you make a video of mint var plants and compare which one looks good in mint
I like the Burkin tbh
The two I don’t like is the adansonni mint and obliqua (the “rarest monstera” apparently).
Idk if it's just me, but I wouldn't ever want to buy philodendron prince of orange. I just feel like everytime I'd see a yellow-orange leaf I'd be worried it's dying. Maybe if it were a very bright orange or deeper like a red based orange, but it just looks sickley to me.
I absolutely love the Jacklyn 😂😂😂
I always love your videos. I realized while watching today I don’t like any variegated plants that are “muddy” colouring. I have a Philodendron Quad, I don’t like it’s colouring (it was a gift) 🤦♀️🇨🇦
i actually like syngonium Godzilla, but can't stand the syngonium rolli 😂
The black cardinal variegated fits well with the color of your shirt and eyeshadow 🤣 you said looks a bit dirty..... I don't think so. It's just a color that makes plants look sick, close to dying. Maybe the reason we don't like it.
I feel so attacked with these choices 😂. There’s a few on here I love particularly the Adan, oceana and the shake.
Phil. Brandtianum-I agree. There’s a type of silver that I love, and a type I really dislike, and I struggle to put my finger exactly on what the difference is. Maybe contrast? I love scindapsus argyraeus, but really don’t like exotica. And the Brandtianum is one I now see in grocery stores, and keep asking why I don’t like it. I’m not sure, but I really don’t.
Birkin-I’ve actually come around on this one. I thought it was really ugly when I first started seeing it, but then I saw one at a friend’s house that was quite beautiful. I still would never have bought one for myself, but another friend gave me a pup from hers, and I have enjoyed watching it develop. So no, not worth lots of money, but for now it’s a welcome member of my plant family.
Alocasia tiny dancer-I loved these but soured on them. The one I had just kept getting spider mites no matter what I did until I threw it away. And, as usual, the big box store specimens I see are just not appealing, so I don’t think I’ll ever try one again. Shangrila is growing on me as I see them more often, and Godzilla looks cool to me, though.
The weirdest-looking & also TEXTURALLY-odd (i.e., “nature doing the most”) plants, in my eyes, include the aforementioned ‘Black Cardinal’, because it’s no longer black! It’s not even pink either. It is that dishwater swirled effect. Looks a bit like it’s struggling to find the right lighting, feeding, and overall it appears as a “lost” plant. Like it would be at-risk of dying if I bought one. I also find anthuriums, especially velvet leaves ones, that are marbled to be scary looking at times. It just doesn’t work to me… as well as Alocasias ‘Frydek’, ‘Polly’, both just don’t work with that marbled variegation. Velvet marble is overkill I think. I’m not spending hundreds on something like that, as I see on Etsy! Also there are numerous cultivars available of _Colocasia esculenta_ (edible taro root) which also look rather bizarre variegated. As you said about Philo. ‘Paraíso Verde’ being flaccid, Taro plants are very loose and floppy, despite their massive size potential, and they blow around in the breeze a lot. They’re also soft, and soft leaves to me don’t work with variegation. It’s similar to the velvety thing. I do love the _Colocasia_ ‘Mojito’, on the other hand.
Variegated Calla “lily” (aka _Zantedeschia_ I think) aren’t the most common things, but you’d expect them to be stunning… nope, they’re bizarre too. Lol. The commonly sold cultivars with spotted or “starry” leaves are nice, especially with darker purple or maroon flowers, but if the variegation is marbled… not so much. Good thing they’re an anomaly. I also find philodendrons ‘Caramel Marble’, ‘Jungle Boogie’, _P. billietiae_ and _atabapoense_ to be too much when variegated. But ironically I do like Alocasia ‘Jaclyn’, both in shape and color. _A. zebrina_ is cute, too. And there’s more! I personally find variegated fiddle leaf fig to be overkill. And variegated whale fin snake plant. A plant that’s already uniquely colored, has striping, edging, spots, and now variegated is too much… and too expensive. For what it is. Lol.
I have a Strawberrry Ice 😂🍓 I did pay a fair whack for it and definitely won't make the investment back, but I do kinda love it all the same, when it puts out growth with really high variegation I love the cream and pink. But I get the dislike for the darker leaves it can look muddy.
One plant I learned that I can’t stand cuz I fought so hard to keep alive and now I’m trying to propagate is a Cordyline 😅 I hope it propagates so I can give it tf away I do not want to be a plant killer but that will def make the list of plants I do not like !
Personally I would like the strawberry shake, if it would stay in its bronze color. But maybe i think this way because I hate pink in general.. 😂
That black cardinal reminds me of the burgandy rubber tree with the leaves fall off 😂
I like my birkin and paraiso verde! I have troubles with both still... The birkin I bought as a baby plant 6 months ago and the white stripes aren't that great yet. The paraiso verde needs to be potted into a heavier pot because it can't stand on it's own (I have a pole) and is currently leaning against the window. I have managed to grow variegated leaves but it's the summer and the room is at 26 degrees.
Monstera Oceana looks like it has a bunch of pollen stuck on it after a rainstorm. that's not a look I want full time LOL
I bought a birkin once and ended up hating it so much I just have it away. I just never got a thrill with it. To each their own
noooo not the S. Godzilla!!! i love that plant i got 3!
The jacklyn is beautiful! Def was on my plant wishlist but I’m going to stay far away from Alocasia I am not into spider mites! I have placed my Polly and silver dragon outside and I spray every two days and wash down the leaves. I only kept my black velvet in door in front of my humidifier and I wipe and clean the leaves. The Birkin is growing on me. The more it puts out new leaves the more I love it lol. It’s just a starter plant. I must say I did not like it at first. I want a BOB CEE SOOOO BAD 😂❤ oooouuu and now I want a Phil Verde thanks 😂
I hate my Brandtianum too little light, Cinderella slippers, not enough humidity, Cinderella slippers. Worst heartleaf philodendron I own.
We need an update on your hoya collection! Its been fooooreverrrr!
Alocasia Jacklyn is GORGEOUS!
😢 They're ALL beautiful, every one of them is a peace of art 👌🏻and I want them all 🤤❤️
I don’t like the brantianum either, I think it looks pixelated. It’s the Minecraft plant lol!
I like the variegated Black Cardinal because it's so soft and muted. And I have a Birkin (I paid 8$ or something like that for it) and I think that they can look really good but mine gets to a point when I think it's finally looking good and then it gets "nope" and looks like trash again for six months. So I have a love hate relationship with it. I like the strawberry shake for the same reason I like the variegated cardinal.
Oh no, not the Monstera mint debacle again 😂😂 don't send any letters, haha! Love you
I thought I was alone in the strawberry shake plant but I’m glad I’m not! It is so uglyyyyyy
that one droppy colocasia which is worth tens of thousands but just looks underwatered 💀💀
Most variegated anthuriums are worthy of this list! They just look diseased and as though they’re on deaths door
Although Anthurium pterodactyl is a decent variegated plant
I got the birken in 2020 I think and I think I spent mayyybbbeee $20. I wouldn't have spent much more than that. It's still thriving. The older leaves do fade a bit with the striping. I don't know. I wouldn't buy it again, but I don't hate it.
The thing with the Birkins was that the ones in the garden centers weren't pretty. Like they have very little but if the stripes and more plain green leaves. It literally looked like the plant was reverting. I had brought 2 and was very disappointed. I think I brought them from Lowe's and they were barely variegated and both died kind of quickly of root rot. Probably because Lowes tries to drown their plants regularly.
Ok I hear you on the regular strawberry ice. But I have 2 galaxies that are to die for! The prettiest hot pink coloring and one of the leaves is kind of ghost looking (the pale pink color). I wish I could post a pic cause it’s just so pretty!!
And it doesn’t have those gross poop brown leaves
Question! I know that there is like s black market for rare plants from the wild, but is there like a list of which plants are like " not done" to buy because it is promoting stealing plants from the wild?
Right now a lot of higher end anthurium are being poached in South America. Most recently, it's been papillilaminum, dressleri, and kunayalense. We are talking, every single plant being ripped from their environment 😢
@@kdoxie914 good to know... :(:(
I love the Birkin! And i agree with you for the rest :)
I literally hate all the string plants, string of pearls, hearts, dolphins, banana, turtles etc. they look so scrawny and half dead.
bobcee would look good in a jungle home. it's up to the individual's view. you tend to pick unflattering photos of the plants to make your point
This is one of the reasons I love plants, there are some that I love and others don’t, and that keeps us wanting more ✌️💚
I actually LOVE the strawberry shake. It’s so pretty. I also love mint Adansonii but I like it cause it’s funky. I agree about the syngonium strawberry ice..I bought one with good variegation for way too much and it lost all of its variegation and I ended up hating it (and the price I paid for it). Same with paraiso verde. One plant that is similar to Godzilla and I just don’t get is the Syngonium Rolli….it looks ridiculous. All the other plants on this list I am meh about. I don’t hate them but I probably won’t own one.
