    I stayed there in Valdez for a couple of months ago, working a seasonal job at Silverbay Seafoods and I spent so much money at that Safeway! So insanely expensive compared to where I live in Tennessee. It baffles me to see people with grocery carts full, there.
    Although I loved living there for a little over a month! I miss it.

      It took me about 3 months shopping at Safeway in Valdez to catch on to how to spend a lot less money. The same goes for where I live in the interior now which is even more expensive. Don't buy what you want of things that are overpriced. Be patient and they will eventually go on sale even if it takes 8 weeks, and the products change on a regular basis. For example the cheapest aluminum foil I could find for the first 2 months was $5.99, and then all of a sudden they had like aluminum foils from a less popular brand and it was only $3.99... don't buy Oreos if you like them by cupcakes instead, they will go as low as $1 per cupcake if you buy 11 and they're as fresh can get. Stay away from Frozen Foods, and for example don't pay 7.00 for a bag of Cheetos wait until they go on sale at two for $10.... I don't know if any of that made sense but the longer you're there or even in another place in Alaska, you find out little by little eventually everything is going to come cheaper than it was yesterday.... if you're fine with doing construction there are a few construction jobs through the winter or even shoveling snow off the roofs, if you're fine with that kind of work I definitely recommend staying in the entire winter, it's just something so few people get to experience and I have a feeling you would enjoy it.

Try to get to Glacier View as well as Broad Pass. If you want to get remote but not too remote check out the Denali area, so many cool little communities out there. Have fun 😊

    • @Life_Is_A_Highway-

      Most of the people who lived in the building that I lived in did not have a car. I didn't go out of my way to meet a lot of people while in Valdez because I knew I was leaving in the spring so other than talking to people on occasion in places I went to I didn't really involve myself enough in the community to get invited. I'm also really good with managing a small budget so I only had to spend about $80 a week on groceries for myself. If I needed paper products or anything else I just ordered it on Amazon because even if I went to Anchorage to buy for example a cell phone tripod, I would have to pay at least 100% more in the stores in Anchorage and the exact same tripod would cost me on Amazon. Even the shoe cleats for the winter in Valdez, in the store there they were $44 and I bought the exact same ones on eBay for $17. I arrived in Anchorage about one week ago and will be putting up a video tomorrow on my first thoughts of the city, and spoiler alert I'm not happy to be here I'm glad it's only for a couple of months lol

    What about the cost of real food not processed. Fruit, vegetables etc. I'd imagine it'd be expensive as well.

    • @Life_Is_A_Highway-
      @Life_Is_A_Highway-  4 місяці тому +1

      A big problem shopping for groceries is most people don't have any self-control in what they're buying, they go into a grocery store writing down what they need but they don't go into a grocery store writing down what they need and how much they can spend. I'm actually putting up a video in the next few months comparing the grocery prices in Valdez to the grocery prices in Anchorage. I buy ground beef, raviolis, chicken, milk, chocolates, Italian sausages, and I never buy any microwave Foods. The only processed foods I buy in Alaska is ham and cheese because something like that cost 3 or 4 times more if you buy it at the counter. In Valdez I spend about $70 per week on groceries and Anchorage if you shop at Walmart you spend about $50( if you shop at one of the larger grocery chains like Fred Meyers or carrs you will spend closer to $70)... I can compare grocery prices here to grocery prices in larger chain Virginia grocery stores and Walmart prices in Anchorage are comparable to chain grocery stores in Virginia that most people go to... but like I said I'm used to living off a smaller budget and I am very good at waiting until things go on sale as well as not making a quick decision to buy something because I have to have Fritos this week... at the end of the day with the exception of certain items like cold cuts or eggs, food prices in Alaska are not bad at all. Same goes with the fruits and vegetables. If you buy them at Walmart you're not paying much more, if you're buying them at Fred Meyers, you are paying a bit more for most of them..... and for certain foods that are more expensive, you just wait for them to go on sale and instead of getting corn and peas this week you get carrots and string beans.. because if you always want to get the same fruits and vegetables every single week then you will be paying more in Alaska. You definitely need to compromise certain things, and give up certain things not only with food but with other things if you want to live in Alaska and don't make a lot of money. But most people who want to live in Alaska do that and the other people shop just like they shop the back home and those people are the ones who usually leave because everything is so expensive in Alaska.

      When I first got the Valdez it seemed like if I just bought two pieces of chicken one can of Coke and one bag of chips the bill was never under $50 lol. But over time you find the cheaper things and wait for the sales and it's not that bad. Of course I'm just feeding one person and not an entire crew haha I went to that dispo and it's really not a big difference in prices compared to Safeway, at least not these days. I was disappointed cuz many people suggested going there instead of the grocery store once I arrived... I really like Valdez but because of the distance from the next town over it would be a bit tough to settle down there forever. Now I'm heading to Anchorage (unfortunately) it will set a base there while I search for something to rent in the interior.

    Do people ever drive up to Anchorage or to another larger town to buy their groceries to avoid the higher prices there?

    • @Life_Is_A_Highway-
      @Life_Is_A_Highway-  4 місяці тому +2

      Anchorage is the closest large town to Valdez and that's 5 hours away. The only other large town would be Fairbanks which is about 8 1/2 hours away. Nobody drives to a large town just for groceries because you wouldn't save any money. The prices are not that much of a difference as well as gas cost roughly $5.19 in the small towns and last week gas was $4.58 in Anchorage...... I know there's some videos where people say we drove to Fairbanks for for 5 hours to buy groceries, but there was another reason they had to go to Fairbanks, and since they were there they wanted to make a video to make it seem like that's normal..... if I want to save money, I would order whatever I could on Amazon. I know it's common that many videos also say you have problems having things shipped to Alaska and that's complete nonsense. I bought some things on Amazon and had them shipped to valdez like a 24 box of iced teas, never a problem and there's only a delay in the winter.

      @@Life_Is_A_Highway- One thing I wonder about is just how dangerous is to to live in the remoter parts of Alaska? Between the cold, isolation, and even wildlife. I'm from rural Texas so we have complete opposite climates lol, but I occasionally hear stories about how unprepared and ignorant either visitors or "newly moved" people can be. Do people often underestimate the weather down there?

    • @Life_Is_A_Highway-
      @Life_Is_A_Highway-  4 місяці тому +1

      @JailShanker a place like Valdez is not dangerous at all even though it's at the end of the road system and about 40 minutes from the next town which only has a couple of dozen people. Its just an actual town, it's just out of the way...... if you choose to live extremely remote where you can only reach by plane or boat, those people are usually familiar with living remote because they've grown up in that lifestyle. Not a lot of people move to Alaska to do that. Most of them actually go back home after the first winter because they didn't realize how difficult it was. And most of them have enough money where they could buy things that would keep them safe and warm, and they likely had a way out even in the winter in case of emergency..... you're most likely not going to move to the far north unless you got a job in a little village as a school teacher for example, and from what I understand the villages make sure those people are fine during the winter because they're close communities and they will keep an eye out to help you. But so few people do that.... moving to the interior of Alaska which is considered remote as well despite having a road system, it really depends on what you plan to do when you get there. If you're going to live in a little cabin all alone that takes an hour off the road system to reach with an ATV, you are pretty much on your own because you most likely won't take part in community activities and nobody is going to bother you but nobody's really going to help you when you need it. I think the few people who do that and it's very few also have enough money to at least get what is necessary to survive over the winter to keep warm... and if you move to the interior in a small community, which I am doing in 2 weeks myself, and you don't have a lot of experience, the person who's renting you the cabin is not going to live far away and that's the beginning of your contacts in case you get stuck one night in a dangerous situation. I think it's important to take part in the community activities in those areas because you have to help people out if you expect them to help you. If you show that you care about the community, people are going to be really friendly to you and if you spend time with them, they're all aware that you're new there and they will help you and tell you what to do, and to call them if you have any problems..... I've never lived in this type of place before so it is going to be new to me also but at the same time I've been there a few times and I've met a few people and I think as long as you're safe and don't try to push yourself but only go at your speed, and get to know some people, you shouldn't expect anything bad is going to happen to you because of the weather. The people you get to know will help you prepare for the winter to make sure you have what you need..... as far as Wildlife goes, you can just live like you live anywhere and most likely nothing's going to happen to you or you just take extra precautions which I think most new people do even though you realize bears and Wildlife really don't want to be involved with human contact. It's pretty much the same as someone who's walking in Pennsylvania in the woods he may come across a bear and he may not, you just don't want to come across a bear near it's kill or if it has Cubs, in particular grizzly bears. I think moose are more of a danger and in my opinion if you live in the city you keep your eyes open for criminals and in nature you do the same thing but you're not watching for criminals you're watching for that angry moose. You just have to be alert.... I think most of the stories you hear about tourists who do stupid things are the ones who go hiking, I think people including myself just don't realize how easy it is to get stuck somewhere and nobody will be able to find you due to the terrain and the size of Alaska, so something that may be safe to do in Texas for example isn't really safe to do in Alaska..... it is a little uneasy to be moving to this area especially alone, the best you can do is take all the precautions that you can and listen to the people who live there, and realize that it's okay to make mistakes but don't make mistakes that are going to get you killed.... I know for example what I did since I'm most concerned about Grizzlies and the cold weather is that I came to realize there's really nothing I can do about the grizzly bears. If a grizzly bear wants to break into your cabin when you're sleeping and eat you, there is nothing you can do to stop it. Chances are extremely low that that would happen but I put some things in place to make myself feel better. And regarding the weather my biggest concern is the car breaking down when it's -40 outside and not being able to contact someone but in that case I just know not to go walking home because of the whiteouts, and to keep some stuff in my car during the winter that will keep me alive until someone drives by the next day, thermal clothes and sleeping bags and stuff like that to keep you warm plus some food, and I'll even have a battery operated heater because I'm new there and I will be more cautious than I think a normal Alaskan would be. But mainly I'm not going to drive far at all during the winter when it's that cold because I want to be more cautious than is necessary until I get more familiar with that type of situation.... keep in mind I'm no expert at this so I'm giving you my opinion and what people have told me, and I'm probably more cautious than most people because I don't overestimate my abilities, and I realize I have no idea what I'm doing without other people's help in the beginning. But long answer short (I'm sorry I wrote so much) is I don't really feel like I'm doing something dangerous otherwise I would not do it. And I'm really just planning my first winter in the interior to sit back and take it easy and just enjoy some peace and to learn a few things so that I always don't have to depend on someone else to do everything for me next winter.

      I appreciate the comment but I'm not political and this isn't a political channel. This is more a video to show the real prices at grocery stores if you look through more than 10 items in Alaska. The one reason I enjoy Alaska is you don't really see much about politics in your face out in public, most people keep their political views to themselves. You do see some local political signs but not very much (with the exception of a few small towns). Also the reason prices are high in Alaska is because of the distance the food and products must travel just to get to Alaska, and then for example in Valdez it also has to be brought by boat from Anchorage or a 5 and 1/2 hour truck ride from Anchorage to Valdez. There's a saying I like that I learned in Alaska; you can believe what you want to, you can support what you want to, you can protest what you want to, as long as how you do it doesn't effect me whether by blocking a road or by pushing your beliefs in my face. This type of mentality works really well because there's a lot less judgment and people don't argue with strangers over silly topics. But if you block a road with your protest, or you bring up politics to a stranger, someone's going to drag you out of the state by your collar back to the lower 48 states. I do appreciate your comment but the price is in Alaska have always been high regardless of who the president is or which party he represents 👍
