incredible solo a different take to playing the bass an alternative style different to the average slap bassist whos so technical but has no feel or passion for when they are playing the bass
One thing about Stanley- he has his own voice. Let the naysayers try that one- finding their own voice, and living up to his compositional skills. He writes great stuff, and plays great bass---
+grazer770 - it still exists, if you look hard enough. The monetization of everything relegated the artist/ collective to the role of unwilling Renaissance men.
That is true, talent is killed with evil that is skilled. Talent is a gift, gift is for others to enjoy, not to be jealous of. There are talents today but they can't get out of their houses because nobody wants them because everybody thinks of them selves to be the talent, even worse, others approve of them and prove their viciousness as talent. Talent can never be ambitious, it is impossible, talent wants to be expressed and shared. Only in very demanding life circumstances will a talented person become a conqueror. Today's fashion is attention grabbing, it is a totally opposite side of life then having a gift to share. Gifted means talented, beggar means today's celebrity of all levels. There isn't anybody talented invited in to their world. How do I know? You have just one guess....
yeah he wrote some good stuff....... i means just some,, where in world STANLEY CLARK WOULD WRITE SOME LIKE continuum by JACO...............this exemple is enough not to mention JACO BASS TECHNIQUE WAS SUPERIOR TO STANLEY HIS...............if you asked this question to STANLEY CLARK dont be surprised STANLEY would say YES HE WAS BETTER THAN ME !!!!
True yet both are/were great composers. Jaco wrote for Weather Report and his solo stuff. Stanley composed for movies and other sound tracks. But indeed, it is pointless to compare styles.
When an artist has a signature song, usually as it is played or sung over the years, it becomes stale and predictable, but with this tune, Stanley always seems to enjoy playing it, and finding a new way to interpret it for the listeners, and for himself! This what musical genius is all about!
Major Mazzaroth : The way Stanley started a revolution with playing piccolo bass Jaco got us all hyped up on fretless. Hand Stanley a fretless and because of his stand up bass skills he’s going to know what to do. Jaco with a piccolo? Jaco had amazing soul and inner intonation but he was almost 100% at home on his fretless. Stanley is at home on bass period. It’s like hand percussion and trap set just because you’re an amazing drum set player doesn’t mean you can play congas or cowbell really well or correctly. Playing electric bass amazing has very little to do with stand up playing. Agreed?
Stanley`s solo strength and brilliance is shown on upright. Check out a 1997 performance ( I believe it was actually in 79, a title typo by the loader). He has a very classical feel and is using a bow in parts of the movement. I also agree his electrical bass playing is more flash than technique. His slapping is really only fair here. But that alone doesn't defer his brilliant writing, arranging, producing and collaboration with some of the best. I would consider him more funk than jazz on electric. So comparing him to Pastorious is apples and oranges in terms of style. Jaco definitely had his own style and technique, but he borrowed off of Prestia`s sixteen note runs was more R&B/fusion than TRADITIONAL jazz (except for Donna Lee). Both were into chords. Jac o a master on harmonics. They were the pioneers of their time and both had their brilliant moments and not so brilliant moments as seen in these youtube videos. As far as the greatest bassist IMHO was Niels Orsted Pederson. He could out play both of them. Check him out and see if you don't agree without bias.
Don't they perform completely different genres of jazz? I thought Clarke plays more fusion and Pastorius plays more smooth jazz. I'm not much of a jazz listener, more of a bass player, but I do recognize that different styles/genres call for different kinds of skills.
@vstrings it is like comparing : Eric Clapton to Gary Moore for instance but ....Evolution ;-) and all of them have respect for one another for sure ...:-)
@HelloOperator91 Yeah I got to play with Stanley He invited several local bassists to come up and jam with him. Awesome experience. He had a huge grin when I started playing many of his signature licks. I tell everyone to listen to Romantic Warrior by Return To Forever. It is some of Stanley's best work ever. You can find some cuts on youtube. Another remarkable bassist I got to meet is Jonas Hellborg. I've been playing bass 30+ years and Stanley is a big influence as well as John Entwistle.
hahaha that's so cool I remember when I started playing bass five years ago and I tried to copy stanley's strumming technique hahah it killed me lol. I guess it was for the better then! lol
remember the nite in the 80s during the Clarke / duke project concert the air playing w/you and singing louie? You let me strum your axe and George let me tinkle his dukey stick? that was one fantastic nite. we had the crowd rockin! thanks for the memories, emory b.
Stanley Clark is a total musician! He is classicly trained and was one founders of the fusion group Return to Forever. Stop trying to compare him to other bass players, because if you knew him, he is in no completion with no one. Hi concerts will always sold out period.
@HelloOperator91 Well, how was the show??? Did he blow you away??? I've seen him several times with/without RTF. Always great. Even got to jam with him at the Arcadia Theater in Dallas back in the 80's. That was pretty awesome. Got to see George Duke with Zappa too. Great times!!!
+helder sufiano yea but he has been around the world more than you've been around the block.with 1000 "s of bass players trying to make an honest living I'd be happy just to be in the top 200..
thiagofranco169 i respect your opinion but honestly jaco was more of an explorer and Stanley was more of a performer. Jaco contributed more to music as a whole in my book is
Well it seems to me that Stanley Clarke opened the doors to others...it is called evolution..of course Jaco Pastorius is playing fretless and will always be (for the meantime ) The Best ;-)
'I really wanna use my new key-tar'.
'Well...okay...But don't make it awkward or anything.'
@rocco777777 he uses Rotosound Funkmaster strings. They are of a pretty light gauge.
incredible solo a different take to playing the bass an alternative style different to the average slap bassist whos so technical but has no feel or passion for when they are playing the bass
lol I meant to say "as if he was playing the upright bass" his hands are slightly slanted off the the side. lol
Comparing Stanley Clarke to Jaco Pastorius is *completely* pointless.
This man is so great he actually inspired Les Claypool. These men completely changed bass forever.
Jaco Pastorius is pretty awesome bro. But isn't this a Stanley Clarke video? So lets just talk about him.
Malevolus Ventus as a huge jaco fan i agree idk why jaco is being brought up lol you don't see Clarke in a jaco video haha
They were close friends with two totally different styles.
The Great Stanley Clarke and the Late Great George Duke...Two Monsters of Talent and Craft...Doesn't get Greater than this
One thing about Stanley- he has his own voice.
Let the naysayers try that one- finding their own voice, and living up to his compositional skills.

:42: is that a key-tar? Or a guit-board?
True yet both are/were great composers. Jaco wrote for Weather Report and his solo stuff. Stanley composed for movies and other sound tracks. But indeed, it is pointless to compare styles.
Even in this horrible recording, Stanley sounds great.
for a moment there, i saw Gus Fring :P
Slapping the bass...wishing ..I was as good...another Monster
Fantastic technique! Thanks for sharing.
I never get tired of this tune, I pretty much learned my finger technique from him..
Holey moley my bass playing sucks bad, but its guys like these that inspire me.
what an awesome guy Stanley is,got his album School Days when i was 15,still relevant today, guy had a great band also.
He sucked out the bottom ;my ears hurt

This what musical genius is all about!
Alembic is my next baby fo sho. My Spector is jealous. Maybe they can have a baby and call it Spectembic
***** or specalemtor
Oh, how I loved Stanley back in the day... great to hear him here! Thanks for uploading.
Idont like the way he uses his fingers, is just not good enough.............
Stanley Clarke is the greatest Bass player to ever Live !
Technically he's the best. Jaco on the electric is the greatest tho!
God damn, he has big fucking hands....
Stanley looks like Cory from Trailer Park Boys
Stanley vs Jaco ???? it takes a lot to be a great bass player No.1.......... Be living.
Major Mazzaroth jaco in my opinion was better
Stanley Clarke is the greatest of all time .......hands down !!!
Major Mazzaroth : The way Stanley started a revolution with playing piccolo bass Jaco got us all hyped up on fretless. Stanley Clark is a bad man on the bass your cousin Deborah Clarke
@David Lis You had better be a damn good bass player to make a statement like that.
Saw him at the Greek Theatre killing it on upright !
The tone he gets when he does the 'pop' part kicks ass!
Who said glasses don't make you look cool.

Hear the other, second bass, in the back, laying down the groove? That is bass playing I don’t know what Stanley is doing
Tuve el placer de estrechar su mano, en un concierto, en Buenos Aires. Un grande. No lo olvidaré jamás! ❤️
Don't they perform completely different genres of jazz? I thought Clarke plays more fusion and Pastorius plays more smooth jazz. I'm not much of a jazz listener, more of a bass player, but I do recognize that different styles/genres call for different kinds of skills.
@vstrings it is like comparing : Eric Clapton to Gary Moore for instance but ....Evolution ;-) and all of them have respect for one another for sure ...:-)
...and George Duke on the funky keytar! Thanx fer the video!!! Great stuff.
@HelloOperator91 Yeah I got to play with Stanley He invited several local bassists to come up and jam with him. Awesome experience. He had a huge grin when I started playing many of his signature licks.

Pastorius did both smooth and fusion, but his style was a lot different. Still no point in comparing them.
hahaha that's so cool I remember when I started playing bass five years ago and I tried to copy stanley's strumming technique hahah it killed me lol. I guess it was for the better then! lol
This man is a living legend. Nuff said!
Bass God Stanley Clarke! God made his hands on the 2nd day
Hi. Whats the brand of strings that Stanley is using? Thanks
. . . Aaand . . . so you see, you don"t need more than four strings, children.
KINGS, LEGENDS, MASTERS I COULD GO ON.JUST ENJOY.
I want this feeling when I wake up in the morning.
this guy can go on forever with amazing licks after licks.
ha! take that, pastorius, wooten, et al....this is THE BASS MASTER!
Those strings are really small. Very interesting
THIS HAS SEXY MUSICAL VIBES #DALADYsLENTpARTNER

Is this a Pbass?
I started learning the bass just 8 months ago. still a beginner. UGH why am I so lazy to just pick it up and play it? Im not a professional.
remember the nite in the 80s during the Clarke / duke project concert the air playing w/you and singing louie? You let me strum your axe and George let me tinkle his dukey stick? that was one fantastic nite. we had the crowd rockin! thanks for the memories, emory b.

Oh, he is Di Meola of the bass !!!
@HelloOperator91 Well, how was the show??? Did he blow you away??? I've seen him several times with/without RTF. Always great.
Even got to jam with him at the Arcadia Theater in Dallas back in the 80's. That was pretty awesome.

how the heck does stabley drum like that? is he strumming with the side of his finger as if he's playing the electric bass? lol
Fantasic
:P
bass goat hands down. he reminds me of Roy Jones jr. dunno why :) Extreme confidence maybe?
Awesome!
so talented
Bass solos are so embarrassing lol
While I love Clarke's playing in this, may I just say... Fuck yeah, keytar. :D
Clalrke and Duke together dis is burning FIRE
@vstrings ;Totally agree, completely different ,but both pioneers on electric bass!
this guy does not get close to jaco pastorius
+helder sufiano yea but he has been around the world more than you've been around the block.with 1000 "s of bass players trying to make an honest living I'd be happy just to be in the top 200..
This guy is far better than jaco ever was. he was the standard bearer for jaco to attain in the 70's.
jaco attain it AND WENT BEYOUND STALEY CLARK............!!!
helder sufiano I've been listening to almost all of Jaco's and Stanley's work and while I love Jaco stuff he can't do what Stanley does.
ShangoDC ilike jacos work more personally but that being said this is a clarke video so why talk jaco hahaha
Stanley Clarke = Life Suite
Jaco Pastorius = Teen Town
Stanley >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Pastorius
thiagofranco169 i respect your opinion but honestly jaco was more of an explorer and Stanley was more of a performer. Jaco contributed more to music as a whole in my book is
what gauges does he use, they look like guitar strings at 2.49?
Well it seems to me that Stanley Clarke opened the doors to others...it is called evolution..of course Jaco Pastorius is playing fretless and will always be (for the meantime ) The Best ;-)
Jaco might have been the best at fretless, but that doesn't suppose he was the greatest bassist. Clarke should be given that title in my opinion.
Slabin da bass
Thundercat and Marc Maron brought me here
Is it possible to get this performance on DVD or CD?
Thumbs up if Bron Cory Robinson sent you here.
Great video. Thanks for sharing with us.
Clarke's hands the size of baseball mitts.
I like old VHS live performances...:^P
Can he play smoke on the water
@vstrings I agree. Apples and Grapes
That's a nice shovel. Oh wait...
