He makes it look easy. I like the way he teaches without any kind of arrogance. He just loves playing. It's like he doesn't even realise how great he is, and he believes anyone can do what he does! LEGEND!!!!
This is so goes beyond the ultimate funk bass lesson - this is a lesson on how to live your life! You hit on the ONE.... then everything you feel can fit into that little space you got. Ahh... love him.
Such a simple riff... obviously the backbone of funk. Too many people overcomplicate things... such a legend, and what he showed here is epic because of the simplistic perfection. I don't claim to be any expert at funk, but I know good funk when I hear it.
This is the best music lesson I have every watched. So simple yet so so right. Hit on the one then fit what you can inbetween, then hit on the one. IF you follow that you will rock...No wonder Buckethed is so awesome.
This piece of information that is being relayed here to aspiring musicians that play bass guitar... or in my case bass keyboards... is a simple, accurate and honest fact. Keeping it on the One !!! The mathematics is very rudimentary... in fact most musicians .. especially funk musicians.. that do not adhere to this rule... are lost.. usually out of the pocket and do not create enough space. If you study what Bootsy is telling you here with all your heart, you will be a great musician. db
Bootsy is awesome. He Played with James Brown and Parliment /Funkadelic. Saw him Live (Bootsy's Rubber Band in the 70's) He influenced My funk style long ago. (Hey Bootsy! Are You a star?) "Twinkle twinkle Baby." Best Quote by anybody ever!!!!!
@n2brideau I second that. I use this formula all the time on guitar, sometimes without realizing it. He really does summarize funk bass/guitar in the simplest terms possible, however someone who is just beginning to play bass would probably be totally lost after this.
@BassGuitarGuy128 That's why I love funk. It's all about havin a good time. No disrespect to metal and rap, but sometimes I just wanna be happy, and that's when I listen to the funk.
@EddieLandsberg yeah often people who do jazz courses feel they are expected to put into action all they know and feel uneasy with something as simple as the 1. Being a serious muso myself I can understand how they feel, but it's good when a pro can just come straight and say it's ok to keep it simple! :D
Oh my god. This formula is absolute Genus! This is way better the pathagorean formula!!! Its so simple but amazing! Now that! right there is what you call writing music, That's FUNK!!! I STILL can't get over how awesome that is!
He makes it look easy. I like the way he teaches without any kind of arrogance. He just loves playing. It's like he doesn't even realise how great he is, and he believes anyone can do what he does! LEGEND!!!!
Bootsy, Baby!
He was probably high as a kite but as clear as windexed windows.
This is so goes beyond the ultimate funk bass lesson - this is a lesson on how to live your life! You hit on the ONE.... then everything you feel can fit into that little space you got. Ahh... love him.
it's like that guy is rapping, playing bass, explaining the funk, and messing around at the same time...
amazing
Also gotta add that this is probably the simplest, most straight forward and best explanation of funk I've ever seen!
i just love the syncopated "UH" the he continues repeating while playing
Such a simple riff... obviously the backbone of funk. Too many people overcomplicate things... such a legend, and what he showed here is epic because of the simplistic perfection. I don't claim to be any expert at funk, but I know good funk when I hear it.
An absolute go-to for anyone wanting to learn the bass, drums or funk.
that little space that you got! :-)
That is kick ass - funny how the greatest of musicians seem to express patience and support for those who aspire to learn.
This is the best music lesson I have every watched. So simple yet so so right. Hit on the one then fit what you can inbetween, then hit on the one. IF you follow that you will rock...No wonder Buckethed is so awesome.
I love how he has that massive grin on his face the whole time.
It's SO COOL the way he can EXPLAIN it with such ease and clarity
This guy just seems so nice..Everytime I have seen him on TV or internet he always has a smile and a good attitude...
man... he's like a bass hendrix
Yes! I have waited 24 years to see this again and searched for it for many many years. Thanks for posting this. And thank you Bootsy!

Bootsy taught me how to play bass in this 1:21 minute long video
ITS BOOTSY BABY!
Ear splitting grin, sunglasses, suit that's louder than the amp.
Yeah, Bootsy's trippin'.
Bootsy is awesome. He Played with James Brown and Parliment /Funkadelic. Saw him Live (Bootsy's Rubber Band in the 70's) He influenced My funk style long ago.
(Hey Bootsy! Are You a star?) "Twinkle twinkle Baby." Best Quote by anybody ever!!!!!
this groove is unbelivable! i could listen to this all day.
This is *exactly* why UA-cam exists. Bootsy rules!
Never thought of it that way when playing. Simple and a great formula.
this is more meaningful than 98% of the bullshit i learned during my short time in music school. that's for damn sure.
his smile creates instant happyness for everybody, he can make the world smile with his funk and smile.
Basic and right to the point.
Bootsy make brushing my teeth look hard.
I can't do this, but I appreciate him taking the time!!!
I read an interview where he said he learned "on the one" from playing in the James Brown Band, and JB would always yell "keep it on the one!"
Bootsy is one of my musical heros.
Thanks Bootsy.
Great video. And now I know what hit it on the one means.
Slammin.
It's the way he hits the one. It just sounds so funky.
One is definitely NOT the loneliest number in the realm of FUNK.
a true legend and some of the best improv advice out there, it made a night/day difference for my random jam sessions
That little sample diddy right there is better than anything I heard on the radio today. God bless real creativity.
His line on I Got To Move is epic, one of the best of all time
"and then you go back to your funk" haha. Friggin' awesome. What a great clip. Thanks for posting!
@JonkoB20 use pickup closest to the neck, boost mids and a little highs, pluck near the bridge
So much rhythm, groove, timing, feel and FUNK!! should be against the law. He sounds better than I do just giving a 30 second demo.
when Bootsy Collins cut his finger he bleeds the funk, yes sir!
That was really cool! I'm a piano player but will eventually add bass to the resume. Thanks, Bootsy!
Bootsy, if you're out there reading this, RESPECT! That was so cool
Yeah I know, you know? ;D
Y'know?
I watch this video everytime I need to remember how to feel funk. Funkatastic!
I love the syncopation between his "uhs" and the bassline. Epic man.
True dat, Bootsy!
You da one.
It's true! You can make the grooviest line with just a few notes. Music is in your heart, not in how many notes do you play.
Love your bass!
So simple, so right, so good.
Man he seems so high...
Gotta love Bootsy! Pure funk.
It now resides in the universe, along with many other musical innovations.
bootsy the genius
@n2brideau I second that. I use this formula all the time on guitar, sometimes without realizing it.

You gotta love Bootsy... such a cool guy.. born with a bass in his hands !
Not just his funk formula but his life formula period. "It's all on the one, baby"
The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Bootsy Collins, ladies and gentlemen!
i am in love with him! so funky. more bassist need to see this!
Bootsy is THE MAN. That's the best freaking thing out there. Go on with your bad self, Bootsy...
@liennto It's a Korg Rhythm 55.

"Jammin' on the one!" - Theo Huxtable
He is. He really is the man.
If i had 1% of the funk you have, i would be the funkiest person in the UK! Amazing Bass Player you are, Songbay :)
@SlikkTim Ah you're right man, he's movin' to the groove even when he turns it off.

They are both funky. They compliment each other.
Never a truer word spoken mate.

Oh my god, that's the greatest thing I've ever seen!
@EddieLandsberg yeah often people who do jazz courses feel they are expected to put into action all they know and feel uneasy with something as simple as the 1.
