Zinnias provide low-stress joy. Always nice to have so many flowers you can give them to friends. This year I’m trying seeds from Floret. Last year I grew ‘profusion’ zinnias, not knowing they had short stems. Beautiful though not great for cut flowers.

I love Zinnias too! In my Zone 5b/6a area, I have the best luck starting them inside. They do really well, but Japanese Beetles can do a number on them. Picking the buggers off and dumping them in soapy water is not fun, but is the way I’ve found to try and keep the numbers down. 😊

I have always loved zinnias. They are such happy flowers. I've had my best luck direct-sowing in the ground. Whenever I buy plants from the big box store, they struggle. You have motivated me to get an early start and try starting some inside.

I'm obsessed with Queen Lime series but didn't know about the blotch. I paused your video and ordered some. I also experience powdery mildew late in the season but otherwise they are pretty carefree. I do have a deer and rabbit problem. When I planted directly in the garden there was a good deal of chewing but not when I plant in containers. I suspect rabbits are more the problem. I also use containers and grow bags because I have a lot of shade and I can move containers around. Great video and tips.

Thanks for the reminder to do some succession sewing with them as well since I am in zone 8B I want to try to have some flowers through the summer. 🤞🤞 I did not realize that zinnias were representative of remembrance so I think I am going to name my garden after my two best friends where I used live. Trying Zinnia Thumbleina this year for my front border. The seedlings are up and ready to plant soon. Going to be better about fertilizing the zinnias and see how they perform. I tend to get powdery mildew near the end of the season too and pull them at that point. I really like to use zinnias to fill empty spots b/c it's an easy way to add some color and make things full.

My sunny spots are limited, but I'm able to get some decent tall zinnias with sun from about sunrise until about 2:00 pm. (East side of the house, Zone 7)
I may consider a second round for fall flowering. We'll see how it goes. I have 36 plants to plant, I can't wait to see what you do with 120!!!!😮

Amazing you should teach about growing zinnias today. I got my zinnia seeds out today and then ended up ordering a few more varieties from Floret with some celosia colors I don't have. You are right! Zinnias are so easy and give new gardeners a thrill since they are pretty easy to grow. I had a ton of volunteer zinnias come up last year in a flower bed not near where I had planted some the year before. Kind crazy, but funny too. I had zinnias forever! I'm preparing a new bed for zinnias this year on the other side of our back driveway near our neighbor's fence. We have a green space behind our home where a lot of us walk and I want to start planting back there to share some beauty with the neighbors who walk the trails. Excited to see all your beauty!

Thanks for this video. Love the content. I’m a new subscriber and big fan of planting zinnias!!! They blew me away when I first grew them. The more I cut the more they produce, but no one warned me of the tall cut flower variety TOPPLING OVER. I encourage those planting this variety to STAKE them much like you would when planting tomatoes. They seemed to BLOOM FOREVER LOL Unfortunately, my beautiful plants were also attacked by lots of caterpillars I think from the butterflies that frequently pollinated my zinnias. Any advice on how to proactively deal with this and other elements that can possibly damage my foliage??? THANKS IN ADVANCE EVERYONE AND HAPPY PLANTING!!! ❤❤❤

I have grown the Candy Stripe zinnias from Baker Creek and had some wonderful stripey flowers. I wish you could buy individual colours such as the yellow/red . I have saved some seeds from them and I'm curious to see what the flowers will be like - whether they will be like the parent or not. In my zone 4 area, I like to start the zinnias in pots first to be able to give them a controlled environment until they get going as I've not had good success direct seeding into the ground.

Hmm, that seems odd … is this just with zinnias or is this with all seeds?
A couple of things to consider … do your lights have high enough lumen? … I prefer at least 5000 lumens for my lights.
Are your trays warm enough? Mine are all inside my home which is warm and I still have to use heat mats for some varieties of seeds. If you are in a garage where it is cooler that could be an issue.
Another thought … what soil are you using? Hopefully it doesn’t have any kind of pesticide in it. When in doubt, start with a seed starting mix of soil.
And finally, how old are the seeds? Are they being buried at the correct depth? Do they need soaking before hand?
There are so many variables when starting seeds … if you feel like it is the Amazon trays, then definitely try something else!

    • @terigreen8649
      @terigreen8649 Місяць тому

@shesamadgardener I've tried flowers and veggies and heat mat no heat mat. Inside . Seed starting mix by garden supplier. Not sure lumen is part of shlf/lights set bought from garden supplier online....seemed reputable. Depth may be the issue

Growing them for the first time this year because I mainly have shade. My neighbor faces south, and is letting me plant her front garden bed!

Hi Amanda, perfect timing for this video. I will be planting Zinnias from seed for the first time this spring. I am drawn to the Queen series for sure, the coloring is so beautiful. I also purchased some Floret originals that I'm really excited to grow. Do you follow the recommended spacing on the pkg or go a bit closer?

I usually go about 4-6 inches apart … now this can result in smaller plants but I don’t like to stake, so planting close together helps support them.

The deer that live here in Montana will eat Zinnias. They eat everything.

I figured deer would probably like them … they don’t have a strong scent and deer like to eat plants with low scent.

Can’t plant in backyard because my dogs devour them.
