One of the best interviews they've ever done, insightful, moving, interesting and not the same old same old. I teared up seeing Neil so overcome with emotion during the Dusty bit. Also some nice insights from Chris, particularly about the London club scene of the early 80s. Thanks so much for uploading it. Long live PSB!
Dusty was an alcoholic living in a motel at the time the boys asked her to sing on WHIDTDT. She had also recently come out of being sectioned for self harm. They literally saved her life.
I love the way Chris Lowe still protects himself to this day. " I'm just a surface, really. No-one is to look inside because there is nothing to see." Both guys are very interesting and their music is very moving . And joyful. Then moving. Then Disco :-)
Same. I remember watching the West End Girls video on TV again and again. At that age, I’m quite sure I thought Neil Tennant was the coolest person on Earth.
Me too. Saw them on Top of the Pops in the late eighties and fell instantly in love with their sound, their music videos, their vibe and of course, Neil Tennant ! My first proper crush on anyone famous ! Used to love the way he sang, his beautiful curls and that hint of eye shadow he wore ....heart melting ❤ I also love an eclectic range of other types of music including Techno, House, Jungle and many bands and singers. But the PSB are up there in my Top 5 bands ever, along with The Fall ❤
Neil looked so STAR STRUCK watching Dusty Springfield's footage! Neil acknowledged the Performance Tour was hemorrhaging money.... But so worth it. Amazing theatrics never seen before nor after!
I'd like those tours again, but can really see why they won't do them. Although their pull is now for sure worth more per ticket so perhaps one day.....
I didn't think I was a Pet shop boys fan but it turns out I am. Some great tunes over the years , I've realised they are musical geniuses. Also Dermott is a great interviewer
Pet Shop Boys fantastic saw them in Liverpool in M&S Arena in June 2023. Neil voice stronger than ever. Phenomenal due Neil and Chris Lowe. True music iconoclasts
I remember seeing psb in Bristol at the then nsmed Colston Hall. They were brilliant and Neils voice was fantastic, as was Chris music. We were at the front of the stage, and I remember Neil handing out water bottles to the squashed crowd at the front. I'll never forgot Chris flashing a cheeky smile at me. It made my year. I'll always love them.
pet shops boys are perfect, i only discovered them recently ad still have two studio albums to get (elysium and electric) i hope to see them live one day
PSB live at Buenos Aires in 2010, was one of the bests shows of my life. Today at my home, we listen to music every day, Metallica, QOTSA, Foo Fighters, Depeche Mode, Arctic Monkeys, etc. and my 4-year-old daughter, who doesn't speak English, sings Purple Zone by Soft cell and PSB. That tells me I'm not such a bad father.
I vividly remember that concert on Red Square, Red Elvises were playing before PSB and I must say it felt so natural, it was already so beyond the soviet era so we all thought that this is over and the future is bright... Neil, you so deserve the order "For Merit to the Fatherland", as you were always spreading the interest and love to our poor country...
PSB are one of our fav artists since I first heard Neil Tennant’s perfect diction voice of West End Girls in 1984 as a teen & the video. Take me back to the 80s. So cool I thought. Have probably all the cd/albums & also 12” versions. We still loving it today boys. Come back to Sydney AUS soon pls ❤🎼😎🧢🎩🙏🌏💫🎹📼💾🌟💸💸🇬🇧💖🎉
That Smash Hits office takes me back! I had a job interview there to be a graphic designer of the magazine. Just getting an interview felt like a success as so many people applied. I didn't get the job but it was the most fun interview! Pet Shop Boys massively influenced everything I did in the 80s!
Great interview and lots of insight. They are my favorite band. I have always thought they explored many musical landscapes and were much more than just a 'dance band'. The 'Fundamental' album was for me a turning point to when they hit with poignant commentary and societal critiques. 'Integral' was a great example of this. They have made a lasting contribution to music with a career that is almost 40 years old. I am grateful to Neil and Chris for all the music they have provided to me and the world. Cheers to the Pet Shop Boys!
Thanks for the upload, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Boys are just awesome. They have amazing talent and creativity, they love what they are doing and managed to remain as they were from the beginning - kind, clever, humane and down-to-earth. True legends. Love and respect, Neil and Chris!
I remember when the original Bobcat 12" single for 'West End Girls' was on the 91-X Radio Make Or Break, and won ... it really was such a charming polish of dance tune (I still remember buying a USB turntable a few years back just so I could listen to that original piece of nostalgia time to time) ... A year or so later, the remade & remixed version was released, that would become the #1 hit it was everywhere ... not every soon has impacted me as each, but some of their single choices are definitely the soundtrack of that time, whether it be the late 80s, to the mid 90s, and so on ... I firmly feel, that they as much as Kraftwerk, Roxy Music, YMO, and others are true pioneers of what would become the bedrock for a lot of the sound to come, PSB then took those elements & trailblazed club music in a very new direction ... whether at a gay bar, or a London pub, or even a karaoke bar, where some inebriated lady my age is butchering 'What Have I Done To Deserve This?', everyone has a memory of one or three or twenty of their songs easily implanted ... But, when it came to the visual elements, they took video making to an art, very comparable to your Duran Duran Russell Mulcahy film or even something from David Fincher, or sometimes just a lush pop bubblegum popcorn kernel for your night ... I'm grateful for each direction they've travelled, even during my days managing Tower Records, the label rep handing me Bryan Ferry's 'Mamouna' & PSB's 'Disco2' as birthday gifts ... just grand moments and such visceral smiles watching these fine folk cringing at the eighties folly of their doing
What an insightful and remarkable interview! I got to know things I had never heard or read in almost 25 years as a fan. Also Neil and Chris looked at ease and were extremely open about their life and experiences
Pure legends being pure legends❤

That could have gone for another 3 hours and it still would have been amazing. Can’t wait for the new album

Agree! A great interview over too quickly
Totally agree with you. Definitely deserved a longer programme.
😂
Imagine how much ended up on the cutting room floor or they asked to be removed.
I do not want to imagine how different would this world have been without PSB. I am almost 50 now and i have listened them since the very beginning.
Snap
Me to xx

Neil and Dusty brought a tear to my eyes xx
Thank you Pet shop boys for being throughout my life. Every album and single it is a stage on my life.
Well described. For many of us it is the same. Long live PSB!
I'm almost 51 and I totally agree.
I’d happily spend the rest of my life listening to Neil talking about (anything).
Same.
Neil provoca eso. Su voz es única, elegante, amorosa❤
Yes ! I could listen forever too, love his accent and the way he speaks, always have ❤

Thank you for think on fans that are not in UK 🤗🤗🤗
How gorgeous is Neil tearing up over Dusty Springfield.
Very entertaining. It's also nice to have an interviewer who meshes well with the guest and doesn't try to out-perform them.
Because they're the Pop Kids ❤
Omg thank you so much for uploading this! Can’t watch bbc iplayer in US
Or Ireland
A USA PSB fan xx
Brilliant but could of been so much longer , Neil is a legend, could listen to him talk all day long , ❤
Wow, great interview. The idea of a 16 year old Neil reinventing rock music is absolutely fascinating.

These days, the young ones may have their Berghain, but I’ll always have my Pet Shop Boys. Great video!!
Loved every minute. Still relevant as ever. Still love them for 40 years.
Amazing guys. I still play every song at least 3 times everytime I listen to any of their songs. Thos was great to see.
Phenomenal discussion, Pet Shop Boys are treasure!

Franchement géniale cette interview, le documentaire est très complet...great ! We love the PSB in France TOO !!! 😀
The only thing wrong with this interview is that it was about three hours too short.
Tanks from Portugal
wow being an American I had no idea Neil got to collaborate with his boy hood idol David Bowie on TOTP.
Absolutely fabulous 😊
Amazing interview, insightful and a good, comprehensible summary of their career, very moving, too. Thanks for uploading!
