Get concrete on your clothes? Buy new ones at shopevanandkatelyn.com/ like our new Fail University design. ALSO, we got an important safety heads up for the big vibrator from a lot of commenters: don't hold on the the metal shaft since it can injure you!
I love you videos! Ive been watching 3 years and when you upload a huge smile still crosses my face :)
I love them so much ❤ say hi to joob for me please 😊
yall could set up a device to hold the 99$ Concrete Vibrator up for the ease of use haha
Like maybe a hook to hold it up from the roof so all you need to do is aim the nose? 😂
PS. you could still use it for bigger projects for sure
I wouldn't have pegged Evan for being so handy with a vibrator
You are officially "that type of channel"
I'm a civil engineering student and we just learned about concrete vibrators last week! Suffice to say, my class was... about as mature as you'd expect a bunch of first-year university students to be
so about as mature as us too?

For future reference; you aren't meant to hold the metal shaft on a concrete poker/vibrator, it can damage the blood vessels in your hands, you're meant to hold it by the insulated rubber shaft
they definitely need to see this if they ever plan to use it again.
Thank you for saying something; I'm hoping they see this. You can seriously hurt yourself doing that.
I was looking for that comment! I was hoping they would at least put some protective gloves on
@@fruitymcfruitcake9674 Anytime.
Though blood vessels are only part of the potential issues with certain tools, whitefinger, burst blood vessels, nerve damage and so on... yeah, those things look benign, but misusing ANY power tools and other types of equipment that vibrate (sonic cleaning baths for example) can lead to numerous undesirable side effects
Great. Now this info combined with the jokes in the video are making me question the devastation it could cause if someone tried it for "personal" use.
lmao I just love their back and forth dynamic
"oh... like a strap on?"
"come on" - evan, barely containing laughter
If she were a little quicker, "Ya, that's the idea." would have been a great retort lol
I haven’t browse the comments to find if anyone else has said this yet, but the vibrating table is probably a larger version of the vibrating table that we use in dentistry and if that is the case, you have to put some pressure onto the container that you are shaking, so that the material inside vibrate. That is also why your container started to fall off the vibrating table, it’s because you’re supposed to hold it and apply pressure so that the material inside vibrates at the same speed as the table. If you don’t add pressure it just gently shake the container in the material and it doesn’t actually vibrate the bubbles out
It looks like they also might have misused the giant industrial stick vibrator too. The amazon listing says not to put it in all the way or to the bottom of the concrete
I’m predental and I was like eh???? What table and then I was like ohhhhh for like impressions and stuff……
I think biggest issue is they are using incorrect tools with unrealistic expectations. These are not tools to get rid of all bubbles but to prevent any big gaps between concrete so it won't collapse on itself under load. That's also why the small stick was so efficient at places where it actually reached.
Seems right. You could already see the difference after the mold got fixed on the table and the vibration actually transferred into it instead of moving it around.
Thank you for this context. This will actually help me practically!
Katelyn barely holding it together is infinitely funny

Agreed, and you get to see the difference in consistency for adding just a little water and taking several minutes to stir and Katlyn dumping it all in at once and moving faster. If they had measured out equal water and powder they should have kept to that and let the technique be the difference.

That's why I can't watch their videos while eating/drinking because I have choked twice before 😂 too funny!
My husband worked with concrete for his work and he said one of the ways they would get rid of bubbles is by using a sawzaw. Take the blade out of it and put it against the bucket and pull the trigger so it vibrates the bucket. He said it worked really well and they didn’t have to buy any separate tools.
even more effective, they could print an adaptor that allows the to attach their "Personal" sized cement vibrator to the end of a reciprocating saw... get in there good and deep that way 🤣
I have also seen them use the sawzall method on the wooden forms for like patios and such where you could possibly see the sides.
Lol, it has been my way to do concrete since I got a sawzaw. Works like a charm if the bucket is large or if it is a small thing.
If you have an air line, an air hammer works wonders!

9:46 Did *not* expect to watch someone circumcise a rock today.
Maybe this has been suggested in the comments somewhere but I feel like since your projects aren’t very big it might be better to use a vacuum chamber? Or maybe even a mixture of both methods. Vibrate the aggregate into shape then vacuum treatment to pull the air out of the entire system for the best results. I know vacuum chambers yield excellent results with resin
this
You must be new here. Suffice to say, they know about both pressure pots and vacuum chambers.
Boil water a bit with vacuum, and you can be sure no bubbles left. Vacuum is good for removing bubbles from resin (polyester or epoxy) also
The black spots in the bottom of the mold are most likely magnetite and/or hematite. They are the black sand that you get when you pan for gold. They are the heaviest besides the gold, and is frequently what you have to separate the gold from in the last steps. The vibrating causes the same liquefaction that happens when you are panning. All of the particles become one with the liquid, and the heaviest particles fall to the bottom. If there was gold in the sand, you would see gold spots as well in the mix. This is also why you had the spinning effect on the vibrators. The magnetite sand was magnetically attracted to the iron/steel chunk inside the vibrator that spins. It would be cool to see what nothing but a large volume of magnetite would do with that big sucker.
I like magnetite! I have magnetite jewelry. I had no idea there was magnetite in cement.
@@texasgemtree It's in the sand. There isn't much in commercial sand, but enough makes it through to cause this. The sand is part of the ready-mix concrete. If you want to see it in action, look up Dan Hurd Prospecting. He has videos where he separates it with a 3D printed machine that has the same effect. It's fascinating. It's blue and has a rotating electromagnet that does the same thing as the vibrators. (except less vibrating).
Well that is incredibly interesting!

Some even say it works "magic"
Just be careful while ordering one, as Hitachi does industrial ones too.
"Back massager"
This is so funny because Hitachi is such a huge company, they do in fact sell concrete vibrators as well as "massagers"
Hitachi sold the rights to it, so some other company owns the design and all these days.

16:02 that would've an interesting experience lol
Dental Tech here so working with gypsum and table vibrators every day. 😆 The way a vibrating table works is that it helps you let the concrete/gypsum flow into the mold rather than using it after you already filled most of the concrete in. If you put in huge amounts from the start you are bound to trap bubbles. You are supposed to take a spatchula or something similar and pick up some concrete before pressing it against the vibrating mold so the concrete/gypsum flows in and pushes the air out. That way you get almost no bubbles at all. 😉
Love your vids~ Keep up the great work!!
OOOh awesome thanks for the tip! We'll try that in the future

I wonder why 😏
@@veewooshi9882 she chose the industrial.
So, part of the reason you're seeing bubbles is because of your mold loading technique.
You need two batches, one surface patch that's very thin, and then a bulk batch. The thin batch is called the slip.
Use it to coat your mold and let it start to cure before loading the rest. It should be just sticky enough to cling to the wall of the mold by itself. You can spin the mold around and use gravity to help you spread it. Then once the mold has been coated once or twice, then you load in the rest of the concrete.
nice to know, thanks.
So are bubbles just a surface thing? because that is a perfect solution for surface bubbles. But what about micro-air-pockets in the mix?. Am pretty sure concrete works just as well with them.. but lets say we want to maximize this.
I imagine that vibration would not be able to take them all out as micro-air-pocket will take an eternity to reach the surface.. but what about putting it into a vacuum?
@@adriand00 if there are bubbles on the inside, you can't see them so it doesn't matter for decorative items like these
Neato! That's similar to how you get a smooth surface with resin molds. First you paint the inside, smear a coating around, really work it into the edges, then pour in the rest of the resin. I've never failed to get a clean surface with resin by doing that. If I have a disposable paintbrush, I'll even paint it in just to really reach every cervase.
Oh, I'm gonna try this, but also aerate my "fill mixture" that goes inside the slip layer..
Pros, light weight and possibly more insulating as a flower pot. Cons, frost cracking and strength.
So yeah, like you said in the video. The second tool is used more for big forms, like walls, posts, floors, stuff like that. Small lil forms it does not really shine in but I think it still did a really good job.
I work in construction and they use them on the job. It is like magic how well it works.
My UA-cam feed suggested this video. And I think for the first time ever it did a perfect job. You guys are awesome.
In case y'all decide to do this again, it's better to manually put all the concrete fully into the mold before vibrating. Shim it all in, instead of waiting for it to flow in via vibrator. Then make sure to move the vibrator around the mold instead of just keeping it in one place all the time. Both should prevent over vibrating. That said concrete vibrators are meant to prevent big gaps in pours not totally remove bubbles so you'll most likely still get bubbles
Edit: this is for the industrial vibrator btw lol
I totally agree, you'd need a vacuum chamber to remove all the bubbles
@@GaisaSanktejoWell, vibrators could almost eliminate bubbles but along the way it will separate everything else. Smaller the bubble, the slower it flows.
suffice to say, these youtubers did not watch a youtube video on how to use their tools....
This, and additionally you want to knock on the bottom if you can not on the sides or the top. For big pours ppl attach motors with an offset weight to their molds and let those run for like an hour. The initial mixing is also pretty important, just doing it by hand seems weird. You are not baking a cake, and even with a cake you use a mixer.
After these results I would also like to see the planter mold done in layers *and* with a combination of slapping. I bet you'd get the best of both worlds and no bubbles.
When she was stepping over the cord holding the vibrator stick thing I was hysterically laughing 😂
Ditto! And the pause.
I use one of those oscillating multitools to vibrate small molds. I just put a long carriage bolt in the mounting hole for the blade. I cut the hex head off and round the end smooth.
This whole video is an innuendo, and I am here for it. I hope this video goes viral you two deserve it!
The Long Dong vibrator has to be moved around and up out of the concrete, it kinda works like a bubble magnet (at least the ones i used in construction). really good for pulling bubbles out of the 7m² of concrete we poured on site :D

We really need to give Katelyn props for her editing cause i literally spit out my tea when the cup was about to fall off the vibrating table
The first tool isn't a 10 to 15 second tool. For it to work you need to let the concrete cure over night while it vibrates. For the second tool, you should mount it to the underside of a work bench or table that you're not using, that one is the 10 to 15 second type, but that's for a structural pour, you still want to let it run a long time to get all the bubbles out, just hook it up to a button or switch and you're good to go, just walk away and let it cure. Plus it will be fun at parties! 🎉
Edit: also the longer you go the more of those black dots will sink to the bottom and the more air will leave the top. If you don't want the black dots, pre-sift the concrete.
What about the little one. What do you know about that?
so if the workbench was bouncier and covered in a colorful fabric protective sheet would it work the same out of sincere curiosity? i mean who has quarters anymore lol
When pouring into molds or doing smooth countertops, you should use a plasticizer additive. With the same amount of water it will turn the concrete slurry into smooth pancake batter. You also want to hold or clamp your mold to the vibrating table so the vibration is transferred to the contents of the mold, not bouncing on the mold body.
Yah and if you're using the probe type vibrator and you want the bubbles out of the moulded surface you run the vibrator over the outside of the surface while running a wire or something down the inside to get the air out.
When I tell you that I've been watching for years and I just recently got my entire apartment hooked... you guys are now our comfort UA-camrs!! keep doing what you're doing, you're so fun :) have a good day 🤙
Your videos are always so entertaining. Please keep doing what you do.
I really think you should look into the stuff used in dental labs. They may be helpful if you can find them used. Extremely well made vibrators for plaster (or concrete) and vacuum chamber/ mixer combos. I use them for metal casting and they are fantastic. (Edit: dental labs are where they actually make the crowns and whatnot. Not all dentists do that in house, but your dentist would probably know who to talk to) also while you’re at it, pick up any spare instruments they are willing to part with, specifically waxing instruments.
My thoughts exactly! My college jewelry studio had one of the fancy dual purpose vacuum vibrating chamber and flask vacuum. So nice, but wicked expensive. 😭 Hell, even those rubber bowls would probably help. A set of those is a pretty cheap item to add to a studio, and they have a crap ton of uses (one type of use per bowl though, don't use the same bowl for resin and concrete.)
Gotta love all of those wax carvers too, and those can be a pretty penny for a good set. Unfortunately my dentists have always done their casting at a lab and never held on to their tools. They only do the molding in house and that's no longer alginate but a type of non-toxic rubber compound. I'm always concerned about that stuff setting in my mouth like two part epoxy. Not because of it sticking, but because of any potential chemicals that it might release. I have a LOT of crowns...plus I need night guards... 😩
This was my thought. If you Google "Dental Lab Vibrator" you'll get some good results.
For our purposes, you vibrate the mold as you're adding the stone, generally holding the mold against the vibrating table so the whole thing is buzzing and the stone is flowing, and then for several seconds afterwards.
I love that they’re moving closer and closer to being ‘that type of channel’ with their jokes. At the beginning of the video I challenged myself to hold it together and it did not last that long but when katelyn said strap-on I actually laughed out loud and then just kept grinning for the rest of the vid
I started watching while my husband was still asleep (early Saturday morning here) thinking "I can keep it together" and uhhhh probably by half way through I had definitely woken him up with my increasingly un-muffled cackling from the lounge room.
“Did not last that long” heh
as someone who worked in a concrete lab making cylinders about the same size as the pots. The best method to get rid of air bubbles is the promptly named Rod & Tap method. Layer your concrete into the container (about 1/3 at a time) between each layer make sure to (rod) the concrete 25-30 times using a plastic or metal rod. then after you (rod) the concrete tap the sides of the container several times to settle the concrete (5-10 times). When adding second and third layers make sure not to rod to deep. Only try to go about 1/2 an inch into the previous layer. small bubbles are inevitable however large ugly bubbles can easily be prevented.
This is one of my favorite videos. I get the family friendly vibe you normally stick to, but it's fun to hear people my make the same jokes I would.

i cant tell if this is a euphemism or not
I always knew these two had it in them to become "not that kind of channel" channel.
After all this time, finally, they ARE that kind of channel
22:11 I also noticed the cement spinning around the large cylinder vibrator when they were doing the smaller mold with it
I got myself also the professional one , 5m of hose and a large electric motor , unwieldy but once use for sizeable projects enormously handy.
I believe the mold is supposed to be solidly bolted to the vibrating table so the vibration will be efficiently transferred instead of he table slipping under the mold. And the big vibrator is supposed to be held by the cable, not the actual head, to avoid vibrating your hands off but of course it would be hard to control it in such a small mold that way.
Don’t wanna get that vibration white finger for a UA-cam video though

I'm curious to see what a pressure chamber or vacuum would do about the bubbles.
Came to say the same, should work like resin ;-)
That is what I was thinking. I would like to see them try it.
In the vacuum chamber the problem is that concrete is mixed with water and the water would start evaporating in low pressure introducing more bubbles. Resin doesn't boil so the vacuum chamber works on that. I'm not sure how the pressure chamber would work on it.
@@astridroseby Pressure chamber would work in theory, but my understanding is that pressure chambers work by compressing trapped bubbles down small enough that they aren't visible. The bubbles in concrete are quite large, so I suspect it might result in smaller bubbles rather than fewer bubbles. It'd be interesting to test it though!
@@astridroseby Good point... maybe they could not pull a perfect vacuum and also cool the cement to keep the water just below the boiling point? Though I am not sure what effects temperature will have on the cement cure. And my worry about the pressure chamber is that high pressure bubbles would crack the cured cement on the release of pressure, rather than diffusing out of the cement without a problem... I'd still be super curious to see any of it tried.

I was looking for that suggestion. Either that or if you need more intense vibration take a hammer drill and turn of the rotation so that it just "hammers" (I don't know the correct word in english). Did this a lot for molds that were a bit bigger than the planter in the video. Just be carefull not to chisel through your mold.
13:55 I SAW THE "VERY REALISTIC" KATELYN, I SAW IT. xD
HAHAHAHA NOW I SEE IT TOO 😂
My first video by you folks and i can say I'm not disappointed
11:06 I'm outraged... Like we did the thing!!!!
Come on, are you trying to make innuendos? Lol
“There might be a depth limit to this one” - words Evan never wanted her to admit 👌🏻😂
I used to watch a DIY concrete channel who would use an orbit sander with no sandpaper attached to vibrate the molds and it worked really well
A jigsaw works pretty well too.
Edit: without a blade, obviously.
you can also purchase an oscillating tool blade specifically for vibrating concrete.
So much information about vibrators. Nice.
20:30 of course its bubbly. normaly you stick it in deep and slowly pull it out while vibrating. of course it wont work when the opening isnt big enough, but in those cases its used externaly, so hold it against the outside and slowly pull up/down and go all around.
you want to push the bubbles to the opening but when you only vibrate at the opening the bubbles get pushed away from the point you want them to go out by. so always star w´vibrating at the furthest point from your opening.
I'm glad you two are so comfortable with your personal lives to share this kind of content on your main channel, very inspiring
PFFT-
Since you've got the big boy, I'd love to see you guys make a concrete table/counter top!
It would probably work really well for big projects like a table or a bench!
@@PanthereaLeonisyeah .. tables and benches.
Oh the black stuff is heavier sediment, you were able to shake the heaviest particles to the bottom! Thats cool its like a neat unintended pattern :)
The unintentional comedy and dragon's hoard of phrasing one liners is absolute gut busting knee slapping hilarity!!! Thank you!
This video had me close to tears 🤣 I find it ironic that the "concrete vibrator" worked the best for your design.
Let's be honest... it's that kind of channel now and we love it!! You guys are the best.
I love you guys, that wholesome yet tongue in cheek joking around while making something together is peak relationship goals.
I would recommend using a water reducer/plasticizer when working with concrete this thick. It will allow for the material to flow much better without having to add more water. Plus they are kinda cool to see how little you need to add for it to actually work.
Just wanted y'all to know how much i appreciated that subtle Wilhelm scream. And all the editing, really. Top Notch. You should do a video editing tutorial series.
the liquification-like effect that the vibration is giving me reminds me of those like. liquid sand pool things when you blow enough air into them
man i LOVE vibrating concrete on the go. the pocket size is perfect!
Love seeing you to back to using older materials but in an advanced way. I feel like after that huge tabletop mishap you guys stayed far away from complicated resin projects. It's ok to fail sometimes, your fans know what you're doing is not easy and that this channel occupies a huge part of your life. The "not that type of channel" jokes cracked me up. You two have an awesome energy and I think this is what the audience is here for. When you're ready, please go back to the resin gods you once were!
I don't know if it is necessarily them shying away from resin because of the huge tabletop "mishap" causing fear of failure. Their projects have been scaled back for sure. I assumed it was because of cost and all-too-common creator burnout. They were definitely overworking themselves trying to establish their channel. Now they have room to breathe and are taking it, yay!
@@frankiemillcarek6976 I know! And they moved and that was disruptive. E&K needs to keep being a thing!!
Evan & Katelyn became “that kind of channel” so gradually I didn’t even noticed
I'm so glad you've tried this because I've been wanting to try it for jesmonite but didn't wanna look like a weirdo, but if it works it works
watching this as a person with trypophobia was very fun🥲 loved the video and the information i learned as a crafter myself though ❤
My 93 year old grandmother (a retired nun) wanted to make a custom concrete bowl so I sent her this episode. She will be missed. 😜
This is the most, "Evan and Katelyn: AFTER DARK" episode I've ever seen. 🤣
It's great to see that each one had a use case and was adjusted to, erm, "scale". The adult one broke Nintendo world records and is typically made of silicone so that solves a lot of clean up! Happy vibrating your...concrete.
I hope this video doesn't get demonetized, because you deserve every penny... but if it does... totally worth it. Thanks y'all.
I use a similar vibrating table in school and at least ours works better if you firmly hold down the bowl/mold so the vibrations are transferred all the way through to the cement instead of it just skidding around on the vibrating table.
