    The one thing that many people don't know is that in the 1960's the duke and Duchess had a lot of contact with the younger members of the royal family who visited them regularly in Paris. All of them called the Duchess Aunt Wallis and she was very fond of her nephews and nieces. They also kept in touch with her after the Duke's death.

      Not for too long I don't think. The lawyer Suzanne Blum obtained power of attorney over Wallis in 1973 and gradually took over her life, even stopping friends from visiting, upkeep to the home etc. The woman was pure evil. Wallis had a terrible and isolated time in the last few years of her life.

      If only that were true. After the Duke's death, Wallis' own health began to fail and she was ripe for exploitation by French lawyer Suzanne Blum (Huge Vickers wrote a book about this - the increasingly frail and confused Wallis was kept sedated and housebound, while Blum robbed her blind).
      Without family of her own, and having cultivated no real friends, Wallis was very vulnerable without the Duke's protection. Her husband really should have foreseen this and made plans with her for a new life, once she was widowed.
      Lord Louis Mountbatten tried to help Wallis, writing to her and visiting before and after the Duke's death. He had looked at her finances, and worked out if she gave up the rented villa, she could enjoy a lavish lifestyle as a permanent resident of a suite at a top New York hotel.
      Wallis could have had a comfortable widowhood as the toast of the Big Apple, where her fame and royal status would have been lapped up by the New York establishment. I can just see her as a regular at Studio 54 in the 'seventies, arriving on the arm of Andy Warhol or David Bowie! And the hotel lifestyle would surely have suited her, with her every need catered to with just a phone call.
      But it was not to be. Once dementia - and crucially, Blum - got a grip, letters and callers were intercepted and stopped. Mountbatten was soon frozen out, told, like everyone else who tried to contact Wallis, she was too ill to see him.
      Her last years as an emaciated and bed-bound prisoner in the increasingly shabby and neglected French villa, tended to by paid nurses who cared nothing for her, were bleak. The once powerful, rich and feted Duchess became a tiny, powerless, pitiful shadow of her former self. In the final analysis, her King let her down terribly.

    I’ve tried so hard to dislike this lady, but each time I see her in interview, I can’t help but absolutely adore her. She is endlessly charming...Not at all boring, stuffy, or unapproachable as one might expect. I, unlike most, do indeed see what Edward VIII loved so much about her. She was very happily married to prosperous well-respected Anglo-American Ernest Simpson in London.
      The Simpsons were in the social circle of Edward. She didnt want to marry Edward, but he was besotted.

    • @glamdolly30
      @glamdolly30 10 місяців тому

      @@TedATL1 'She didn't want to marry Edward'. What rot you talk!
      That myth sold a few books, but it's plainly sentimental garbage. Wallis couldn't wait to marry Edward, for all the glittering prizes he threw at her feet. The kind, though unexciting Ernest Simpson, couldn't possibly compete with the former King's riches and royal status!
      She believed the Duke's promise to make her his Queen - and when that didn't materialise, to at least share equal status with her as HRH. When that honour was withheld from her on their wedding day, meaning in protocol terms she was actually supposed to curtsy to her husband, she was incandescent with rage - and she never forgave him or the royal family.
      However her anger over the HRH slur gave her a useful stick to beat her spineless husband with to the end of his days. Wallis never loved the Duke - she wouldn't even visit him on his death bed, where nurses frequently saw him crying out for her in vain, like a lost lamb seeking its mother.
      It was a very cynical and toxic marriage of two shallow hedonists. In the final analysis, David and Wallis deserved each other!

    How sad that the true story never came out until a few years ago. Edward chased her, he was obsessed with her for some reason but she wasn't with him. From newly discovered correspondence it has been revealed that she was in love with her husband mr. Simpson, not in love with the king. She didn't want to break up her marriage, she was being forced to do so. The king said he would kill himself if she left him, she begged him not to give up the crown, but he did anyway. She did her duty by making the Kings life happy by the expense of her own happiness. She devoted her life to him. She paid a very high price for her mis judgement.

It's sentimental nonsense to say Wallis didn't want to marry into royalty and live a life of unimaginable wealth, status and privilege. She was raised by a single mother who drummed it into her - you must marry UP for security and money. And Wallis did just that - and by marriage Number Three she had fulfilled her Mother's wildest dreams for her, as you couldn't marry any higher UP than a King!

    So classy till the end...She would have made a marvelous Princess, I am disgusted that Windsor Castle waited until the death of Prince Edward, to make her enter England and placed him to rest there.... I know it was an estate funeral...how evil of the Queen Mary, even in the event of Princess Diana's death.... Horrible!
