- Theirs is a much-told tale: The King who gave up the English throne for the woman he loved. Wallis Simpson has been often cast as a villain, but now her side of the story is told in a new movie written and directed by Madonna, and in recently-discovered letters to her first husband. Mark Phillips has the story.
A great gift to the world. His abdication.
The only thing difficult to believe are the eternal efforts by some to glamourize this pair. They were both weak characters, self-indulgent to a fault. They eventually trapped themselves within their own melodrama and spent the rest of their wasted lives in useless pursuits.
The only thing Wallis Simpson did that meant anything was prevent the wrong man from being King. That's worthy of high fives for her.

I read the book "That Woman" It's a very interesting read. She was definitely a gold digger and I don't believe for a minute that she would have given up Edward. She wanted the power, money, jewelry and prestige too much.
Yes they were in exile, but it was a very glamorous exile. They lived a very rich life. When Edward was appointed as Governor of the Bahamas, he left for months because it was just too hot. He was a spoiled brat.

not a gold digger due to the fact that she spent her entire life with him . Being in that family means that you have to give up everything even your own independence and all traces of a personality which it was something i guess he wasnt willing to do .

Xena ~ I don't think it was 'love' so much as a dependence on her, as she gave him the excuse to back out of a life (as king) that he did not want. There is no way that 'that woman' loved Edward/David, if she had truly loved him, she would NOT have cheated on him with a homosexual male.

She and her husband, Ernest, used to refer to Edward as Peter Pan, because he never really grew up.
Wallis didn't love him, and tried to call it off not long before his abdication, but he told her he couldn't live without her and threatened to slit his throat.
She was trapped, really, but that was partly her own fault for becoming involved with him in the first place.

She didn't have to marry David, but she was too much of a coward to live as an independent. She preferred to live in the social shelter of marriage and David was her only remaining option. Earnest had married someone else. No other man of consequence (wealth and prestige) would have her because she reeked with scandal.

Everyone is entitled to marry the person that they choose. The world does not have to like it - as long as you do. No one is inferior, every person has an entitlement to life. There is no such thing as class anymore - thank goodness!! A person's morals stand them in better stead that money.

Its clear Edward never wanted to be king, the government probably never wanted him as king neither. And Wallis probably never cared about being qyeen. Wallis wasn't the first divorced woman he messed with. She came along under convenient circumstances and they both had to stick with each other. They were probably very unhappy.
I think they were, from the accounts I've read but she was probably more unhappy than he was, since he was absolutely besotted and obsessed with her, but she was not in love with him.

They don't paint her as a lovely woman, but they do absolve her of some of the things people thought she was guilty of.

I wonder why the Royal Family and the Establishment kept such close scrutiny on Edward and Wallis, but then let Diana do whatever she wanted? Just the fact that England and Germany were at odds in the 1940's, but Diana was simply seen as an unbalanced young woman? The "powers that be" seemed to know everything about Edward and Mrs. Simpson but Diana could invite reporters to Kensington Palace and state that she didn't think Charles was capable of being King and no one at the Palace or in government knew what was going on? Very strange. I would think they'd recognize a royal going off the rails and gag them pretty quickly for damage control.

He was stifled by the family he was born into and had he stayed king he would have changed the royal family as we know them today. He just wanted out and she made that possible. Letters from Wallis were discovered in an attic which clearly revealed that she never really loved Edward, and tried to avoid marriage with him, but by then it was too late -- he threatened to slit his throat if she left him.
So, not really the love story that everyone thought it was.

OMG She (Wallis) had low moral character. She should have let him take the throne, not that she had a choice. You should dig into how W treated E after they were married and he was no longer king. Also, into how he died alone, with only his nurse by his side. He kept calling for her but she wouldn't go to see him.
She also asked her chaperone, Herman Rogers to sleep with her just before her wedding to E so tthat offspring could be passed off as royal. Herman rejected the offer. Herman and his wife were taking care of and protecting her against the relentless press while they were living apart waiting for the furore to boil over. She was the most hated woman in UK then.
Were her eyes still on the crown or was she just thinking that an heir would cement her gravy train and position in the BRF?

From some letters of hers that were found, she didn't want to marry him at all, and was going to get away, but the paparazzi got wind of the story, so Edward came to move her away from the paparazzi and she was stuck.
