HRH the Duke of Windsor (1894-1972, formerly King Edward VIII) is interviewed by Georg Stefan Troller for the German TV programme "Pariser Journal" in his home in Paris.
According to the interviewer's memoirs, the interview was originally scheduled in English. When the Duke found out that the interviewer was Austrian and it was to be shown on German TV, he spontaneously decided, to everyone's amazement, to try and answer the questions in German. Troller recalls that the Duke's German was not perfect but fairly fluent, and that he spoke, amusingly enough, with a slight Viennese accent.
In a private talk afterwards, the Duke stated that he learned German in his youth while staying with his cousins and the Rothschild family in Austria.
An interesting document of contemporary history I hope you enjoy watching!
I take the freedom of removing any inappropriate comments implying hatred or spreading badly researched, incorrect information.
According to what he told one biographer, the royal family employed German servants whose job it was to speak German to the royal children at meals. This was because at the time they had close family relations with a number of kings and queens in various German states and they needed to be able to talk to them on visits.
King Edward VIII mother was German; Maria von Teck, later Queen Mary.
House of Saxe - Coburg - Gotha... German
House of Hanover- German.
@@ninascheicher5500 Queen Mary's father was of German origin. She was born in England and never lived in Germany...nor did she have a German accent. Most royals in those days spoke English, German and French though.

I knew he was part German and that he could speak German but never heard him speak it! until now...just wow
Wholly German with just a tad hint of Hungarian. Both of Edward’s parents are of German ancestry: Queen Mary was essentially German (Teck/Württemberg, Hanover), George V was also wholly German (though Queen Alexandra was a princess of Denmark, she was born as a princess of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, a German junior collateral line which was then-distantly related to the ruling branch of Oldenburg in Denmark)
Actually from George I to George V , the British Royal family was wholly German. The Duke and and his siblings had about 12% Hungarian ancestory thru their mother Queen Mary. If you really go back in time, the British Royal family are descended from 3 ancient German Noble houses : Welfs, Wettins and Oldenburgs. Strictly speaking , King Charles III is of the House of Glucksburg, a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg.

He would have been taught German in the schoolroom. Royals in those days were expected to speak more than one language, especially with their family members spread throughout Europe.

On my trips to Germany, I destroy german vocabulary (and grammar) far worse than he does, however, I am struck by the peoples willingness to allow me to practice. I am very grateful. Our French cousins do not extend me the same courtesy.
That’s why the French are seen as jerks to the rest of Europe.
French people are also kind to those who attempt to speak French, honestly and humbly, but not those who mock it.
If you lived in France during WWII and saw everything destroyed by German Nazis, you would not feel too kindly toward them either. The French are also snobs, a known fact. So you do get elitism there.
@@mjremy2605 I've been to France scores of times, on work and holiday. I genuinely try, I'm polite and I don't mock. I've met those who are patient and will help, I've also met those whose faces contort when you make mistakes and almost (or openly) mock you in return. I'm guessing for those people there is an expectation that you won't butcher their language and will be fluent. However, we all have to reach fluency through practice.
@mjremy2605 as a German who learned French at school , was at several exchanges with pupils from France, I wish to add not once was I mocked and there was no such thing as hatred towards Germans because of WW2 in my experience, it did happen to me only in Poland, but then they apologised and bought me a beer. And stupid stereotypes about Germans speaking like Hitler, etc paired with gross lack of awareness of continental community /EU in the UK that never understood nor wanted to be part of the unity of continental Europe yet seems to not have found it's identity after loosing its power and significance in the world. France and Germany are like brothers and that for a very long time already. We may fight like brothers also, very direct , haha, but we know and understand each other better than UK seems to be aware.
@@j.3069 It would be wise to leave politics where it belongs...in the sewer.
As you've highlighted it I will offer my opinion. Britain's exit from the EU was through a democratic vote. Her entry to the EC in 1972 was forced through Parliament with a slim majority of 12 votes. A confirmatory Referendum confirmed membership of the EC (not the EU) in 1975. However, Britain's place in the club has never commanded the support of all its citizens and resentment among those that either did not support it, or those who wanted a loser arrangement continued to smoulder. In the modern period Britain also has a good record of not violating other Europeans national borders by force, therefore we do not have to be bound to other countries to prevent this like Germany to France post WW2. The EU project isn't all roses though is it? The anti EU movements are growing in size and power across the continent. No amount of gaslighting can counter that.
I did not once mention politics, only the experiences that I have had. Nor was I glorifying or indulging in Monty Pythonesque national stereotypes. In fact, I think that may have been you doing that!
He could go back whenever he wished.....but, Wallis would not be received at Court and that is why he would not go back. This was a tactical psychological move to prevent him returning. He had asked his brother if he might retain his home, Fort Belvedere and was answered in the affirmative, but in reality, they knew he would not be coming back.
His brother King George v1 had to buy Balmoral from him and a very high price was demanded as the Duke didn't have a lot of money

Very interesting. It seems to me that the Royal Family (maybe all monarchs and royals) are very sporty - a gene that previously was useful in combat - winning or maintaining their throne, now less so, therefore sport is an outlet. Also, our (I'm English/British) Royal Family are and have been cosmopolitan but this doesn't filter down to the general populace. The Royals are missing a trick not telling us ordinary Brits that learning a foreign language or two is a good thing and liking foreigners also!
Wow. Fascinating.
The interviewer doesn't hold back with his opinion of the Duke 0:35 to 1:04 -- Troller's commentary is scathing. I bet the Duke regretted agreeing to do this interview, on finding out out about the finished version with its stinging preamble.
That was some serious shade!
Scathing and stinging, I don't know. I'd rather describe it as pointed. Troller always had his "tone", his elaborate vocabulary, his stylish sentences. Yes, he does hint at the prince being somewhat of a lightweight, one can interpret it like that. But one can also merely read it as an artful phrasing of what little there is left when a king has abdicated. It never gets disrespectful.
Die Liebe war stärker.
I can speak German, I learnt it out of interest. I find that speaking a language connects one with the country of source. I feel somewhat Germanic, though am English. I am not surprised that he can be considered to be a traitor, if Andrew Lownie is to be believed (and I have no reason to question the credibility of his integrity). I understand this was the real reason why he was 'forced' to abdicate.
He speaks pretty good German for a British King. Of course, so didn’t his great great great great grandfather George I.

The British royal family are all of German blood and some Russian… Hence the change of name from Battenberg to Mountbatten-Windsor…now you know.
So how was the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother - grandmother of the present King - of 'German blood.'? This whole 'German' thing - with all its inherent racist and xenophobic connotations - is simplistic and reductionist and takes no account that royalty - until recently - was fundamentally pan national. They married to cement political and economic ties but did so largely within religious constraints. The catholic and protestant royal families tended not to intermarry which meant that British royalty looked to other protestant European dynasties for partners - to the many German courts, to the Scandinavian countries etc.
She was not German. She married into the family…
I'm amazed how little the commentators on here know about this subject ... perhaps they're American!

If I may speak out of turn as an American, had Edward not abdicated, you might have grown up speaking Deutsch in an outpost of den Vaterland. Is that something you would view as an improvement?
I really doubt that, the monarch does not have the power to either declare or stop a war. Edward VII and kaiser Wilhelm were first cousins, who knew each other, that didn’t prevent WW1.
@@annaparry4045 I recommend the BBC documentary “Royal Cousins at War” for a fascinating look at the cataclysmic effects of Victoria’s dynastic marriages of her children upon world history. The Kaiser, George V and Tsar Nicolas were all grandsons of the Queen and first cousins. Wilhelm suffered a birth injury that resulted in a shriveled arm, and he was rejected by his mother, Vicky, the Princess Royal because of it. Wilhelm grew up to be a sociopath because of this and WWI was his revenge on his grandmother. George V feared public censure if he gave sanctuary to Nicholas and his family and as a result, the Tsar, Tsarina and their 5 children were shot to death in a basement.
What a family! I’d say Victoria had a lot to answer for but she was as much a pawn of history as any of the other players. An intellectually and emotionally limited woman with narcissistic tendencies whose upbringing stunted her from becoming a fully functional adult. Her children all paid the price for that in various ways. So it was perhaps inevitable that their children and their children’s children would also be screwed up. Maybe it was an inevitability that Edward VIII would be of such weak character. But maybe not an inevitability that he would actively collude with Herr Hitler with the aim of reinstalling himself on the throne he’d walked away from, even if the terms were as a puppet of the Third Reich. Maybe the monarch cannot officially declare war and a deposed monarch certainly can’t - But during his brief tenure as monarch, Edward gave state secrets to the German ambassador via their shared paramour Mrs. Simpson, and from the Bahamas urged Hitler to ramp up the Blitz. The thousands of casualties of his own people- Including women, children not to mention potentially his own brother and nieces-didn’t bother him in the least. I have to call that high treason and I’m not even English.
He learned German from his mother, Queen Mary. She was born in Germany and lived there until her 20s.
No, Queen Mary was born in London at Kensington Palace as Princess Mary of Teck. Her father was Francis, Duke of Teck (born in what is now Croatia) and her mother was Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, who was born in Hanover and granddaughter of George III, King of England.
His family name was Saxe-Coburg and Gotha until 1917 when it was changed to Windsor by his father
They all spoke German in the palaces.
Royal children would have spent very little time with their parents. They learned how to speak from their nannies and servants. Children of the nobility and gentry had that experience too.
Most Royals speak more than one language, even King Charles speaks four. English, French, German and Welsh and some knowledge of Gaelic. Queen Elizabeth I spoke eight different languages, its expected of a royal.
