Alrighty man, I def need to connect with you about pond management!! My name is Beau with Better Together Homestead. We are just now digging our pond, it’ll be kind of small at only 1/3 acres. But my wife wants to swim the pond so we really want to make it as clean as possible while still having good ecology for the fish. Thanks for the videos!! You’re doing great!
Hi Beau! Thanks for the nice comments. It's nice to meet you. I'm happy to chat more about your pond/pond build. Since building ours it has become a bit of a passion of mine. The balance between a swimming pond and fishing pond is definitely what we are trying to achieve too. Despite being a large channel, I hadn't seen yours so I'm excited to look back on your journey and follow along. I look forward to chatting more soon. Feel free to reach out via email. The reason people may comment that you shouldn't dye your pond is probably because plankton and phytoplankton blooms are prevented from the dye. And that is the bottom of the food chain for fish. Most people who are trying to grow trophy fish want good plankton blooms. That is the reason why they'll lime/fertilize their water. Fertile water can support more pounds of fish per acre by a lot over non fertile water. If you don't care about growing fish then, you're right, there is not much not to like about dying your pond.
Where I grew up the the Hudson Valley... There is so much clay muck... That the ponds, there, bloom every year... They need these aerators to process the dead p!ant material, algae and the ensuing blooms, sucking up all the oxygen. The dye seems to help those ponds to support large fish that would otherwise not survive.
Have you thought of painting the shingles white? That would cool down the box and extend the life of your pump. I run a solar build and painting the shingles made a big difference
You are the 3rd or 4th person who has suggested that. It didn't cross my mind at the time, but I should probably consider it. I think as long as those fans keep running I'm OK. If they fail I may be in trouble...at which point I'll definitely have the paint out. Ha
Working on getting aeration put in my neighborhood HOA pond. We have terrible luck with algae and submerged grasses/weeds. I will be posting videos and updates on my channel of our pond. Thank you!
I do need to paint them. I'm not a pool expert and don't know what it would do to the pumps. Probably wouldn't hurt anything, but maybe ask a pool specialist
Can you drop a link to what you use? Curious to know how often you treat your pond and also it's size. I'm not opposed to switching. I have just found this to work well and be a great value.
Thanks! Adam and I talk shop about ponds and all other things rural life quite often. Our pond is a couple years older than his which is to our benefit. He's definitely leaps and bounds ahead of me in the firewood and YT game. 😎
Dying a pond is an owner's personal choice, and really should only be used for purely aesthetic ponds instead of ponds where "good" fishing is the primary goal. What Dye makers never tell you is that when sunlight is blocked. available nutrients in the pond are are increased considerably because plant uptake is blocked. Filamentous algal growth is increased in the shallow areas where sunlight penetration can't be blocked due to the much higher level of available, unused nutrients. Also, if you like your pond for fishing, Dye used regularly can decrease the carrying capacity (total pounds of fish any pond can support) of a pond by as much as 75% and cause severe stunting of the fish due to the severe reduction of food production limiting sunlight causes
@@IndyFarmLife Smurf or no smurf, the liquid is non toxic, non harmful, non poisonous and all that makes sense, because the manufacturer writes that on the bottle.

Ahh I'm with ya. For me, the dye is two fold. 1. To deter algae growth. 2. To be aestheticly pleasing to the eye so that my wife, kids, and everyone else is more apt to swim in it. Us pond folks know that the workhorse of clear water is the aerator!
Yes every pond should do this. Great looking pond.
Thank you! It's almost pond season again soon!

Thanks Pete!
2:12 - "its pretty cool" he said XD
I should have watched longer before I commented.. you just answered my earlier question..
Haha I try to reply fast, but I'm not THAT fast! 😎 Yea, no issues with wildlife! The deer drink from our pond daily. I also have over 1500 fish in it.

Use white shingles!! Hey...can you put it in chlorine pools?

Buy the blue buyoo one the color is so much better than the rest of them trust me we do ours all the time
That one is actually diluted over the 1 gallon jugs it's a bad deal

This video should help answer your questions.

@@IndyFarmLife I'll watch it thank you .
How many day will it last?
Depends on the inflow/outflow and the size of your body of water. I typically drop in a couple gallons every 45 days or so. March - Nov.
Can u swim in this??
Absolutely! After 24 hours, the dye won't stain anything.
That looks great considering where it started from! You're definitely doing better than Adam @Hometown Acres lol. Good job. -John

That pond dye is $75 at my Tractor Supply. That's crazy!
Drive over here and visit and get yourself a few jugs! :)
Seems like something they would do in China

paint the asphalt white
I need to! Several people have mentioned that. I better do it before I learn my lesson and it cooks!
Does it harm wildlife? Deer, turkey, hogs ect? Thanks
It doesn’t kill the fish but will kill all the wildlife you listed.
Pond Dye is safe for all critters
If it is safe..You drink it.
It's not toxic to fish/wildlife, but I don't think I would advise drinking pond water in general.
Pond Dye is safe
Don’t spill the dye on your shoe. You will regret it for some time to come. Ask me how I know 😂😂😂
haha I've been a Smurf a time or two.
why using gloves for completely natural harmless chemical, made for living organisms?
Ever poured dye all over your hands?
@@IndyFarmLife you mean water dye that makes marine ecosystem healthier? Nope I did not.
Yes. While certainly non-toxic, that dye in its concentrated form will leave you looking like a smurf for a few days if you get it on you.
@@IndyFarmLife Smurf or no smurf, the liquid is non toxic, non harmful, non poisonous and all that makes sense, because the manufacturer writes that on the bottle.
Yes, agree. But you asked why I was wearing gloves.
Using blue dye is cheating
How so?
