That's pretty cool! But I would reverse the fans (or at least one) to flow *at the pump (pc guy here). directed air is always more cooling than indirect(diffuse) air. Also, you can't smell methane, but you can certainly smell H2S! (hydrogen sulfide). I hear the diaphragm pumps can fail early too. Interested in the progress of this!
Thanks for the info about the fans. You are the 2nd person to suggest that. I'll have to make the switch. It made it thorough the hot summer at least and still running strong. I have a meter on it now seeing how much it costs to run. More to come for sure. I appreciate the input!
@@IndyFarmLife No problem brother cool vids, cool channel! You could experiment with a little resistive temp sensor and tape/glue it to the housing and do A/B testing!
So, the best oxygenation happens when there is more surface movement (like swells not waves in the ocean). That being said, fine bubbles need to be deeper, and coarse bubble diffusion (the DIY PVC option) needs to be closer to the surface, as it’s forcing more water to the surface quicker. They work equally well as long as you place the system you’re using in the right part of the office the water column.
I made an aerator for my duck pond from an oxygen concentrator I found in a trash pile. The compressor looks like yours. The enclosure I made from concrete with a sheet metal top cut from a washing machine. My home air system for my air tools has PVC pibe buried. I used the skid steer trencher to put it in, much aasier than backhoe!

I'm curious if a garden soaker hose would work for making a defuser?
It may! Not sure if it would be as fine as this diffuser but it could work. It wouldn't be a concentrated in one spot though. Unless you coiled it and attached it to something. Would likely need to weight it too.

Beneficial bacteria is very important. Aeration helps the beneficial bacteria to multiply and do their magic.
It really does seem like magic, but it all works!
Hey man, Im trying to maintain a 1.3 Acre pond thats only about 6-8 ft deep. 3 pad aerators at 200ft, 250ft and 420 ft out, 1inch airflow line. Ive tried using a GAST brand rotary vane pump (3/4 HP 10CFM) and it broke on me after a couple of years. I got another one and it broke in 13 months! Theyre NOT cheap! The vanes broke and jammed it up, when it was discovered the thing was so hot, it didnt auto shut off. It doesnt work after replacing the vanes. And this pump is contained in a box identical to yours. Do you have a recommendation on what kind of pump i SHOULD use? and any idea why 2 of these things broke on me within 4 years? The supplier tells me its that they run continuously year round and thats why they break so often, but theyre supposed to be running continuously.
Wow, sorry to hear that. I haven't used a rotary vane pump, but I did do a lot of reading and Gast was one of the better brands out there. From what I know, heat is the main killer of any of these pumps. Any idea how hot it was getting in there? My rocking piston pump has been running strong for about 15 months now.

Aerators are more efficient at putting oxygen into the water and turning the water than a fountain is. They are also more discreet. We didn't want a fountain on the water's surface.

Not to my knowledge. Any submersible pump would likely be moving water vs pumping air. It's cheaper to move air than it is water. This setup has been awesome for me so far!
If your pond is old, and you add aeration to quickly or deep, you gonna kill all your fish! Warning!

did you consider insulating the walls of the enclosure? It could reduce noise and heat. I'm going to be building one of these and got a lot of great ideas from your post, thanks for putting this out there!
Thanks! No, I didn't ever consider insulating. It would help with sound, but that's not an issue given where mine is located. I would fear the insulation would keep too much heat in. That little pump gets hot! Most of the heat inside is from the pump, not the sun. It's pretty warm inside even on cool days.

It will certainly help! You can probably get by with a diaphragm style pump. Many people use a septic tank pump in such a case. Good luck!
What splitter do you have hooked to it? What the gauge is screwed into.
That manifold actually came with the pump. It's not an aftermarket splitter

I've been thinking about doing aeration. I fight algae early summer. You can use copper sulfate, but only treat pond in sections to prevent oxygen depletion. Put about 5 lbs and mix with about 10-13 gallons of water and spray around your bank.
I did that last summer (see below) but we now have fish. I have read horror stories about fish kills. I wanted to play it safe and opted not to use it this year. The air plus bacteria have it looking really nice now!

I use copper sulphate in my pond. Only treat for half the size of the pond then wait atleast 2 weeks then treat for other half. I have yet to have an issue with my fish dieing.
I do mix in a sprayer with hot water then spray the surface all over with the mix and then run my areator non stop for 2 days then its on a timer for being on at night.
Doing that kills all plants the air just breaks up the decaying matter quickly and algae doesn't like moving high oxygen water and killing all the plants is bad long term.

Certainly could! I have seen a couple builds out there. The question then becomes cost/maintenance. How big of a battery bank will I need to keep it running 24/7? What about winter/cloudy days? May struggle to keep up. I might explore it at some point for sure.
@@IndyFarmLife My first thought is to get a kill a watt power reader and plug it in a couple days, figure out how much power you are using, then start doing some math about how many batteries you’ll need with a proper sized inverter to 120 for the pump you’ll need, and that will give you an idea on how much solar you will need. My guess is for something that small, a cheap HF solar solution would probably work and a good battery. But, then again with a good amount of power on location you could do a tall pole light or something like that as well.
@@philipirwin5286 I think I'm going to do this. Just looked at my latest energy bill and it ticked up quite a bit from the previous month. (with no aerator) However, it was significantly hotter this period as compared to last, so that's a big factor. I'll report back with what I find.
How should I introduce my diffuser system in my pond? I have shiners and minnows stocked 1 acre pond dug 1yr ago. Getting stocked next Wednesday. How do I acclimate my current bait fish to all the gases and get this done before my fish get here Wednesday. I’m in southeast Texas thanks! I’ve heard 30 minutes day one then hour day two and so on?
Add aeration slowing as he stated. Add more time daily until you reach 24 hrs a day

I like the idea people have of having a duck decoy attached to the aerators to make it easy to find and pull up for cleaning/maintenance.
I have a rope on it, but no decoy. It would bother me that that duck never moves ha

@IndyFarmLife oh ok. So it's very young. You don't ever want to drop areation like that in an old pond with lots of muck on bottom. Will kill all your fish! Warn all your viewers.

So it's a DIY ENCLOSURE for the aerator. Not a diy aerator
You can pay pond and lake management companies to install such aerators. Just because I didn't manufacture the aerator doesn't mean I didn't do it myself.

I didn't because I run my pump 24/7/365
