What do you mean (...)more complicated? Sorry for the delay.Obviously she was promoting death penalty. Did I missed something? Please explain your thoughts on this strange song. Thanks.
Theres a couple songs i'm really nostalgic about, imcluding this one. As a kid, my family had a cottage, and one cd. It was a mix of a bunch of songs that i heard on repeat. Recently they're all coming back into my head. Gotta find that cd.
Love singers like Dinah Washington and Nancy Wilson who could tell a story when they sang. This tune about murdering your cheating lover and an electric chair execution is "shocking"
I wanna take a journey down to the devil down below......I killed my man I wanna reap what I sowed....You won't hear real lyrics like that anymore. Fabulous. Rock on Dinah. Love ya.
About 23 years ago, in Liverpool on a NYE, @Sam😊Browne (who recorded #Stop) was at her cousins house across the road where we were hàving a great party . She actually joined us and sang this phenomenal track. I was, and still forevermore, blown away!! 💜
Now This is real music,! Oh Dinah, "All around the world I never will forget that if I did'nt love ya baby then grits ain't groceries , egg ain't poultry, and mona lisa, was a man." "You could hear Bessie singin somethin' like this" lol
Judge you wanna hear my plea, before you open up your court But I don't want no sympathy, 'cause I done cut my good man's throat I caught him with a trifling Jane, I warned him 'bout before I had my knife and went insane, and the rest you ought to know Judge, judge, please mister judge, send me to the 'lectric chair Judge, judge, good mister judge, let me go away from here I wanna take a journey, to the devil down below I done killed my man, I wanna reap just what I sow Oh judge, judge, lordy lordy judge, send me to the 'lectric chair Judge, judge, hear me judge, send me to the 'lectric chair I love him so dear, I cut him with my barlow1, I kicked him in the side I stood here laughing o'r him, while he wallowed around and died Oh judge, judge, lordy judge, send me to the 'lectric chair Judge, judge, sweet mister judge, send me to the 'lectric chair Judge, judge, good kind judge, burn me 'cause I don't care I don't want no one good mayor, to go my bail I don't want to spend no, ninety-nine years in jail So judge, judge, good kind judge, send me to the 'lectric chair
@jasonito23 aww shes real good at this version but Bessie was sucha rough gal and you can imagine her douing just what she says... its just a tad more ... real....
Dinah Washington is good. But if you compare the two ,Bessie singing this, Bessie's power is just awesome and an example that can't be imitated. Dinah does it her own way, but the feeling isn't there. I just listened to Bessie's version. That's why I compared the two. I'm not trying to take anything away from Dinah. Some people actually prefer her version. Not me though.
I wish there were more videos of Dinah to find. My favourite female singer.
Same
Nobody sang the blues like Dinah. She was the greatest blues singer of them all.
I love Dinah. She makes me feel good.
I really love this tune!!! her voice is beautiful!
inspiração de Amy winhaus

Those eyes are amazing...and the song is great, more complicated than just the surface lyrics definitely

This is something that Dinah would have actually done.
Good for her!
The first version I ever heard of this was by David Bromberg. I didn't realize it went back to the twenties :)
Very different from Bessie's 20s recording; as enjoyable! Thanks for posting!

Many years I heard someone say Dinah Washington had the voice of an angel and the mouth of a longshoreman. lol.
Hey man it’s 2021 now
Talk about a killer tune.
Sensational
I like a woman with balls. And an incredible way with any kind of song. There was only one Dinah!
