Ken, Best of luck with your new hobby. When you do something, you sure do it right! Just remember to not stay up all night working on your new adventure.
Hi Ken , When doing your layout for the train run make up paper template to see how it looks before you start cutting track to length ,loose fit the the points were you would like them first, loose fit the long runs on to points . Once it looks to your satisfaction then you can pin all tracks for a finish . Enjoy your new hobby will keep you busy for years . I started with OO then move over to N gauge as I could accommodate more on the lay out also changed it from 12 x6 to a u shaped 8ft x8ftx8ft long and 2ft wide got double tracks around the whole board . managed to fit in a small country station ,shunting yard and loco depot , been building it since I retired 8 years ago still working on it . Have fun .
If you want to put in a pond, my dad and I used a mirror with some blue waves 🌊 to make it look realistic. I would have suggested green to paint the table as I usually use more grass and earth tones. Let us know if you will sell HO gauge houses, Barns or garages, depots etc. love to buy one or more. This is getting me motivated to update my own this summer. Love your channels. Stay healthy. Saw your video of you in the hospital. Prayers are always with you.

Plus a New workshop for trains(When your trains)!! out grow the shop.!! The best hobby too have especially in a Northern cold climate during those 7 months of darkness!! Enjoy!!!!!!
Good luck with your new hobby. I wish I had the space for one now. When i was a kid 55 yrs ago I had a H O train set about the size of your entire garage.
It's good to see a man and his son working on a model railroad together. It's what most of us think it should be but our sons and daughters usually think differently. Mistakes are normal. Here we go, welcome to the best hobby in the world. Remember, " Model Railroading. Is Fun ". I hope someone who lives close is interested in the hobby. Having help and friendship is part of the enjoyment. Have fun and watch out for rivet counters.
Now wait Ken, I thought your daughter was the painter.😊 Good start. Be prepared for a lot of comments. We model railroaders can't stop suggesting another way to do things. if you need help we have quite a few you tubers to help starters. I think the first model railroaders were new Englanders , we use everything , every scrap to save money.😂😂
Ken, I started my layout for the grandkids 5 years ago. Started with 4x8 and now it’s grown to 40 ft down one wall with three 25 ft islands going into the center of the room. 600 ft of track and still growing. My first mistake was not drilling 1” holes in the center frames for the wiring. One in the center and one on each end about 6” from the edges. If you put 1/2” foam on your deck first and then glue the cork track roadbed onto it, it will make the sound from the train wheels much quieter. I enjoy building the layout more than just running trains. I gave up the DC trains for DCC control locomotives. I would recommend finding a model railroad club in your area for advice. Good luck on your new venture. Caution, it’s a very addictive hobby but sure beat’s watching TV in the evening 😊
@@Kens265 You sure have done alot in 2 months. I should have checked your latest video before posting. Your doing such a good job, so when is your next expansion. A second modular deck on wheels that can be attached to continue the mainline to an industry section for switching operations for an L shaped layout?
I had a HO scale. I also worked on a layout at Aberdeen Arsenal Md. The bottom floor of the building. This was back in the early 1970. You may need to do a addition and build a separate building maybe a Salt Box style.
You are doing great. Built a 4x8 for my 3 sons & myself when they were young in the basement playroom. My 4x8 was also on rollers & had shelves underneath to store exert locos, train cars & accessories. Brings back many awesome fun time memories.
I kind of wondered what was up with the mini garage. I suspected something else miniature was going with it. Have fun with the new hobby. I have seen some incredible setups. I am in Edmonton, Alberta and one mall even had a huge room for the local club to show their stuff. Pretty much whatever you can imagine could be done.
I’m awfully glad you chose this for your hobby. I’ve wanted to do this my whole life and now I can do this through you. This hobby involves all trades so you’ll have a lot of fun building this.
Hi Don! (I’m a model railway fan in the U.K.) I’m so sorry to hear that you can’t enjoy making stuff yourself but I know you’ll enjoy watching Ken, he’s really skilled. Kind regards buddy.
Ken, you should hinge your railroad set against the wall using a six inch spacer beam from the wall so as and when you build up the scenes on the model base, you can fold it away safely against the vertical wall when not in use. Your other option is to build a mezzanine above so the whole layout won’t be in the way of your normal work tasks.
I had the privilege of donating all my HO scale engines, cars, and scenery along with approximately 5000 feet of PECO track to a person that had five boys that all had learning disabilities. He had the space and time to build something that I have always wanted to do. I know that it is at a great place and the boys are enjoying their time with dad immensely. I will follow this site to allow me to dream again about my fondest hobbies.
I have friends that take model railroading seriously. They get together at a very serious fellow railroader's home in his basement. It takes a number of them to run the railroad. They know all the signals etc. Best wishes in your new hobby. 😊
One railroad friend lives on an acreage. One problem he has is that moose damage his track for his outdoor model railroad. The moose accidentally step on the track especially in the winter. . . . So my advice is to keep moose out of your garage. 😂
538 subscribers so far! I have known several people that did model railroading. First off you need to get a Conductors Cap, to show off your new Hobby. I was in Wichita, Kansas going to Automotive School in the mid 70's. A friend of mine invited me over to see his basement railroad. He had filled his entire basement with his Hobby. He put his Conductors cap on, turned off the lights, turned on the model railroad. My guess he would spend hours "playing with his trains". Since this was 50 years ago, I have no idea what this train set was worth. Let just say a lot. It was pretty much locked into his basement. Have fun Ken, be careful with that wrist. Had follow up inspection on my shoulder surgery yesterday, Doctor said everything is going good just do not push too hard. {Wichita, Kansas has a lot of railroads}
suggestion... cross drill those pockets on the legs and add a dowel or pin so if you have to lift the table the wheels don't fall off. Another suggestion I got from a train buff is to use scraps of roll roofing under the tracks to simulate the scale size ballast.
Good move Ken. Loved trains as a kid, models as well as the real thing. My hometown had a steam train, tobacco being the main cargo, but was taken off in 1964, then diesel, like the one you have.
Congratulations! Welcome to the wonderful world of model railroading! Nice job! There are so many exciting facets to this hobby! You will find out in a very short time period! I only have about 14 years experience in it. My first model railroad, what I refer to as school, is on UA-cam here. It’s on my channel and listed as Pinelands Railroad or Pinelands Central Railroad. That one is now gone after I tore it down due to a move to Florida. I have already started on a new one that’s on my channel too! I plan on doing this one after learning on the first one and avoid all the mistakes I made on the first one! I’m sure I’ll probably still make some mistakes, but nowhere as many! Feel free to check them out and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask away!
@@Kens265 I actually have a question for you. Since I haven’t watched all of your videos yet. I am laying down extruded foam insulation board for my sub roadbed. I noticed you painted the foam surface. I wanted to completely paint mine with flat latex paint, before I lay down any track. Would the paint cause issues with the cork roadbed sticking properly or even staying glued down? Just curious.
Enjoy the new hobby. People that like watch large trains are Railfans. Following the trains is “Railfanning.” A thought for your workspace in your garage…I had a layout table with an eye hook in each of the four corners. I had ropes and pulleys from the ceiling with clips to attach to the eye hooks. With a crank, I raised the table up towards the ceiling, folding the legs up, and cranked it way up out of the way. No floor space used when the trains were not in use. Just a thought. It’s your railroad. Make it fun for Ken.
Ken, this is very hard for me to comment on…. I have been a model railroader since the age of 10 and after 60+ years of modeling I watched your first video in a state of shock. You have already made so many mistakes, it was hard to not sound totally nasty. Then I realized that everyone makes mistakes and if I’ve made one, I’ve made them all! Just for the record, you should not build on a flat plywood or other flat surface. In real life, most of the world has ups and downs that you can not easily model on perfectly flat surfaces. You should not have cut your table legs shorter. It may seem to make working on the railroad easier but looking at your trains from a scale 1000 feet up soon gets very unrealistic. Train sets are a trap. Pre-made track work is very limiting and never looks good. But you are getting into the hobby when most are not. This makes me smile! So, make your mistakes! Get some track down no matter how it looks. Run a train around and let it chase its tail. We all did early on. I will keep watching your videos and try to keep my thoughts to myself. Hindsight is 20-20 after all!😊
Hello Ken, great that you chose this hobby, you will have a lot of fun with it. But you have to attach more reinforcements to your model railway plate, for example around the bottom of the legs at a height of 1 foot. and build reinforcements under the plate between the crossbars. It must be possible that when you lift a corner of the plate, the plate does not twist, otherwise you will not enjoy the system. Greetings from Berlin
Why??? I have about the same set up but with plywood legs and I have no more bracing than he does. The road has been operational for 10 years and no problems.
Little bit of advice as I’m a rail road we my self with ho/ oo scale don’t be scared to buy secondhand you’ll learn a lot from it as you’ll need parts kits etc have fun
Nice start, I love the caster idea. I have been into H.O. Guage trains for 50 years, I have boxes and boxes of train goodies. My old layout is long gone but I kept all of my collection safe and thanks to you Ken I'm going to start a new layout for my grand kids to enjoy with me!!! Thanks for the nudge in the right direction, I watch all of your videos on your other channel as well keep on building in both scales lol and I will watch them all ❤
Just found your channel. Going to play catch up and watch all your progress. One thing that some are doing, is painting the underneath frame white so you can see all the wires better. FYI - Don't know if it's been said, you won't need cork when using the EZ Tracks. But that is one solid set up so far.
Hi Ken. I am sort of an amature rail fan. I am 68. When I was a child my dad and skilled next door neighbor built a 4x8 HO layout for me when I was about 8 years old. They built the table itself closely following the plans and instructions out of a magazine. All the framing was 1x4 #2 white pine and very similar to yours but on two foot center and 1/4" A/C plywood with glue down grass colored granulated sheet paper to build off of. It has to have a plaster of paris mountain on one corner with track running through it on two different elevations. My dad and friend formed the shape of the mountain with common household wire screening supported and formed with 1x4 wooden blocking , Of course another MUST HAVE is a lumberyard with a "pine shed" stocked by a centerbeam parked on its spur, Gotta support the trades yaknow. A common trio of building models back in the fifties was an HO scale three cape cod houses in various stages of construction. May as well add that garage! I spent a lot of time playing with the trains and making minor "modifications" over the tree years we had it but when we moved from our home in 1965 sadly we couldn't take the train board with us. In the decades since I have never again had the opportunity to have a train board. But I have visited many model train shows.
Hi Ken, I've been watching you at KK for quite some time. I was happy to see you started this hobby. I did it as a kid, but not since. My wife is an avid trainy, but has never had a layout. She already has the train set. She's been talking about putting a layout in the lower level of our house. I just told her about your new channel and she's 'on!board'. We heave to sell our unused treadmill to make easy for the trains. Now we are both onboard! Well be following you all the way. Thank you!
HEY, KEN Well Been watching your channel for about 5 mos now and have enjoyed The tiny garage video project so thought checking out this channel Yeah the model train hobby can Get really really expensive but Is a fun hobby I did subscribe to the channel OK Take care stay safe and will see you on the next video project Ps I'm also a Vermonter Barre vtt
Hi Ken just dropped in to see your new hobby it will be interesting to see the progress being retired for the past eight years other than gardening and Christian videos life can get a bit dull so My interests are Israel and the Middle East cooking and seeing how others live in different parts of the world
Liked Donald Ross idea about caps, so am sending Logo Engineer caps to you ken, thought you could use them for your carpentry crew to promote this channel. Congrats on surpassing your thousand subscriber goal.
I wish I would of kept the model railroad my parents got me for Christmas when I was 10 years old! It seems I remember that there were tablets you put in the smokestack and smoke would puff out when I ran it! Have fun and God bless you!
Hello Ken, i will definitely be watching this channel also. Tell me, how did you come up with the idea of building models of the different garage styles? Interested!
HI Ken. It's cool to see you getting into the hobby! But..... Unlike building a garage, a model railroad is never finished. More ideas, more track, more locos and cars etc, etc! :
Hi Ken. After retiring 4 years ago I added a 14 x 16 foot addition to my pole barn workshop and built a train room. I had a HO train set from when I was 10 years old. It’s a great way to spend time a building a layout is very rewarding and fun. I’ve been watching your other channel for some time and this new channel should be a great way to learn and share. I’m certain you’ll enjoy it and have lots of fun as you layout the track and setting it up. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe
Like the new channel, I think the common term for a train nerd is a 'Railfan" I'm sure there are others. Looks like you got a great start on the table and initial purchases. I have to agree with the others you may be building a small garage type building for the train layout soon enough. Enjoy the new hobby and we will enjoy More Ken videos !!
Great Hobby, lots of options for HO scale, I would cut out a Center access for Decorations out of arms reach. but looking forward to watching it develop into a scenic landscape, Thanks Ken

Hindsight is 20-20 after all!😊
Thanks for your thoughts
Hello Ken, great that you chose this hobby, you will have a lot of fun with it.
But you have to attach more reinforcements to your model railway plate, for example around the bottom of the legs at a height of 1 foot. and build reinforcements under the plate between the crossbars. It must be possible that when you lift a corner of the plate, the plate does not twist, otherwise you will not enjoy the system. Greetings from Berlin
Thanks for the advice
Why??? I have about the same set up but with plywood legs and I have no more bracing than he does. The road has been operational for 10 years and no problems.
Hey this is cool .we all need a hobby. I will be watching. Thank you for the new stuff.😊
Thanks I appreciate it
Like the new channel !
Thanks I appreciate it
Little bit of advice as I’m a rail road we my self with ho/ oo scale don’t be scared to buy secondhand you’ll learn a lot from it as you’ll need parts kits etc have fun
Ok thanks. All part of the learning process
Thanks for the nudge in the right direction, I watch all of your videos on your other channel as well keep on building in both scales lol and I will watch them all ❤
Thanks. The grandkids will love it.
looks like a great start to a great hobby. Good luck and I am glad you are sharing this experience. Maybe I will also take up something like this.
Thanks. I think you would enjoy it
Just found your channel. Going to play catch up and watch all your progress. One thing that some are doing, is painting the underneath frame white so you can see all the wires better. FYI - Don't know if it's been said, you won't need cork when using the EZ Tracks. But that is one solid set up so far.
Great thanks for watching
Thank you for sharing.👍
You’re welcome
Hey Ken! This looks like fun! Looking forward to the next episode! 🚂
Thanks
Nice thanks for sharing. Hopefully my grand kids can enjoy this one.
Ken enjoyed watching your new hobby, anyway I will support this channel. Your a great guy and you follow your passions, and you take us along.
Thanks I appreciate it
looks like fun ken
Thanks it is
Hi Ken, I've been watching you at KK for quite some time. Thank you!
Wow that is super cool. I hope it goes well
You’re fortunate your wife shares your model railroad enthusiasm, as most wives don’t. This mutual interest will bring much enjoyment. 😊
Great new channel Ken, we will have lots of fun watching the development, so many possibilities!
Thanks yes there are
You've chosen a terrific hobby. I look forward to watching your videos.

Hi Ken just dropped in to see your new hobby it will be interesting to see the progress being retired for the past eight years other than gardening and Christian videos life can get a bit dull so My interests are Israel and the Middle East cooking and seeing how others live in different parts of the world
Cool thanks for watching
Nice horn! Midwestern engineers would’ve just blasted through the intersection after blaring their horns 1st…Vermont engineers are so cordial!😂😅
Haha

Liked Donald Ross idea about caps, so am sending Logo Engineer caps to you ken, thought you could use them for your carpentry crew to promote this channel.
Congrats on surpassing your thousand subscriber goal.
Wow that’s really cool. Thanks
Measure twice, cut once as Grandpa and dad preached!
I wish I would of kept the model railroad my parents got me for Christmas when I was 10 years old! It seems I remember that there were tablets you put in the smokestack and smoke would puff out when I ran it! Have fun and God bless you!
Thanks. I’ve heard of that for the steam
Ken you might want to use homasote board or sound board 4x8 sheet under track its a lot quieter than on just ply wood cant wait to see
Thanks I appreciate the input
Great hobby for your line of work, it will also help to fill up those winter hours.
Yes definitely
Community Page on the main channel is a good place to advertise, heavily
Oh thanks
A hobby I always wanted to do.
Actually me too. Amazing how much I didn’t know about it
Hello Ken, i will definitely be watching this channel also. Tell me, how did you come up with the idea of building models of the different garage styles? Interested!
Something I always wanted to do. Thought it would be a nice challenge
HI Ken. It's cool to see you getting into the hobby! But..... Unlike building a garage, a model railroad is never finished. More ideas, more track, more locos and cars etc, etc! :
Yes I’ve already noticed it. Thanks for the info
Need to have someone put the graffitt on the side of some of the cars. Should be another great addition to your other channel, look for it everyday.
Thanks
This is cool! Have fun with your project. We will follow the updates.
Thanks
Stay safe
Wow that’s cool sounds like a good layout area. Thanks for watching
Always loved HO trains . I have a big set myself but know where to put it up yet.. congratulations! You will love it .
Thanks hope you find a place for yours
This is great! You’re going to love it. I’m so glad you’re doing this. Thank you
Thanks it’s a lot of fun
The timing of your new channel couldn’t be better! I am just now rebuilding my HO train set that I had as a kid over 60 years ago. How cool is that!
That’s cool. Maybe we’ll learn together.
Haha thanks
Looks like your engine will be a GP-40-2, one of the most produced engines of the 70's
I didn’t know that. Thanks
Hi Ken. Good to see your new hobby take effect i shaall follow your exployts. Take care.

Great Hobby, lots of options for HO scale, I would cut out a Center access for Decorations out of arms reach. but looking forward to watching it develop into a scenic landscape, Thanks Ken
