AJ Paredones Oh you couldn’t be more right. I remember sitting down one day listening to clips of John Mayer playing guitar. Then as soon as he played this riff, I just LOST IT. I had to stop what I was doing because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. As a guitar player myself, I’m now obsessed with this song. Listened to it for MONTHS. I’m STRIVING to make sure this song is absolutely perfect whenever I play it.
WeTalk440 Oh and I’m sure JM does play this tune a lot too xd I’m having impression from watching his ig streams that he likes to frequently jam around his old badass riffs - no wonder...they’re badass. xd
Hendrix started this style of music, SRV carried it on with a blues rock twist, and John Mayer renewed it and holds the torch high. Yet all 3 have their own signature sounds with their guitar playing. It's interesting to watch John Mayer's transformation over the years. He continues to change his musical vibe from record to record. Now he seems to be in a folk/acoustic stage. He's definitely a versatile musician and I really hope he gets the guitar recognition he deserves soon.
one thing I have noticed in comparing Letterman's show to Leno's is that when it comes to the sound of whoever is performing....i'd say Letterman's soundguys have it together...you can not only hear the lower end of the instruments...you can almost feel it.
At the very least, at least the pop crowd was introduced to the blues and the wonderful world of blues-rock through the John Mayer Trio. I hope they reform so I can see them live.
yeah, srv did that alot too. and gobs and gobs of jazz players throw things from other artists songs alot. its really cool for the people that recognize the song, its like a prize in the cereal or something
Jam! I wonder how it felt for Steve Jordan to be back on Letterman considering he was the original drummer for Letterman way back in the day before Anton Fig.
John Mayer has been an upcoming blues legend for some time bud. If you are giving him a real chance like you say you'll be happy when you find the nuggets you like.
Not sure I get which post of mine you replied to, but I kind of agree. Mayer IS putting bluesrock out there for the pop audience to see! That's what makes Mayer so special. His platform is the pop genre mostly. He can do something that Mato Nanji, Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and so on cannot do: Bring the genre to the "masses."
i saw Matt Schofield live a couple of weeks ago at the cheltenham jazz festival! love it! His band are pretty amazing though, his drummer (a lefty!) very tight and having a keyboard player doing the bass as well is really cool. Dreaming of You sound very similar to come back to bed by mayer mind!! haha. And I agree, pop fist to get the money and contacts, then do other stuff. My favourite guitar player is Steve Cradock.
Esas 6 seis personas que pusieron no me gusta, seguro escuchan Justin Bieber que les atrofia el cerebro pobres! .. JM el mejor artista que hay, sin dudas :D
Hey mate. Cheers for the explanation. I suppose it was obvious but sometimes you need to ask dumb questions! I didn't actually know that John was a fan of SRV!! But i can see (or rather hear) the benefit of having three amps. His tone and range of tones is awesome.
This was the song that opened the eyes of every blues rock guitarist about John Mayer.

WeTalk440 Yes Sir!! 🎸🎸🎸 What you think of his new album? I love it!!
WeTalk440 Oh and I’m sure JM does play this tune a lot too xd I’m having impression from watching his ig streams that he likes to frequently jam around his old badass riffs - no wonder...they’re badass. xd
Who did you think he was?
For me it was that Volkswagen commercial with John rocking on the guitar.
People before this song: John is just a pop singer
John Mayer: Who did you think I was?
Naw, he was making a name for himself to gain that following to introduce his real music
i can barely play this...
he can shred it, sing it, dance around, perform in front of millions, and update his twitter status all at once.
Steve Jordan = One of the best.
It's a like a homecoming to Letterman. He was their original drummer before Anton.
this song is the definition of going straight to the point
Mayer is a complete badass.
man when i first heard this song i thought it was John Mayer doing a Hendrix cover.
good shit this is
He even did a cover of John's song "Bold as Love" actually I think Hendriks even named an entire album after it, in tribute.
13 years later and this is still a joke too advanced
Still too advanced of a joke
Three effing virtuosos!
Pino+Steve+John= Unfreakinbelievable.
How much talent can you fit on one little stage?!
Pino P. on bass is a killer.
you think steve was pumped? the Letterman gig was his back in the day. He's come full circle!
Pino Palladino on bass. WOW!
+1 .. John Mayer was lucky to have Pino Palladino, very lucky.. First String, top shelf & one of the finest; Pino P. on Bass. .. .. ..
Now gonna lie, that was probably my favorite performance of this song I have ever seen.
A myxolydian always goes hard
The bass guitar slide in at the beginning goes hard affffff
Softly thumping hard
it's official he's probably got the sweetest rig in existence!!
I remember seeing this when it aired having no idea he could play guitar so well. Jaw literally hit the floor.
He was 27 here. That is freakin unreal. 27???

Damn John played like it was the last time he'll ever play. He ripped that song and that solo. My favorite performance of this to date!
Christ, that's a lot of talent up on stage there.
Obviously worships Jimi and Stevie Ray so rock on John!
one thing I have noticed in comparing Letterman's show to Leno's is that when it comes to the sound of whoever is performing....i'd say Letterman's soundguys have it together...you can not only hear the lower end of the instruments...you can almost feel it.
Probably my favorite JM song. Certainly my favorite performance of it. Guy will go down as one of the all-time greats.
This is the BEST performance of that song. He’s so fucking underrated.
this is so tight it could be a studio recording...
At the very least, at least the pop crowd was introduced to the blues and the wonderful world of blues-rock through the John Mayer Trio. I hope they reform so I can see them live.
What a drummer Steve Jordan....
Wooowww, good luck and very nice... John Mayer...
john mayer is simply the greatest guitarist out there right now
steve jordan is a real master..totally awesome..check bold as love.
yeah, srv did that alot too.
and gobs and gobs of jazz players throw things from other artists songs alot. its really cool for the people that recognize the song, its like a prize in the cereal or something
i could tell that he is no ordinary pop player when i listen to Neon
plenty of great guitar player , but John is inspirative
steve jordan is a beast
yup when steve jordan switched to that very last drum beat, that ride cymbal had to build up sound to come through that was great.
thats a killer riff man i like it
John Mayer Live = John Mayer on studio
the biggest of our generation
super! SUPER SUPERRRRR!
this is def the best rhythm section since chad and flea...hell, they are the beat!
i really wish he brings back some more Trio stuff!
that outro is sick.
Damn this guy is just bringing the blues back!!!!
he is so creative
and the dinamic changes give his solo character.
Yah you gotta love Power Of Soul at the end...nice touch
I always always come back to this video
Jam! I wonder how it felt for Steve Jordan to be back on Letterman considering he was the original drummer for Letterman way back in the day before Anton Fig.
I was about to say that but I see you beat me too it. Knew it was Hendrix as soon as I heard it.
John Mayer has been an upcoming blues legend for some time bud. If you are giving him a real chance like you say you'll be happy when you find the nuggets you like.
That last half of a minute was pure bliss....
Power of Soul - Hendrix!
Holy shit that beat blows my mind.
Love the cashmere scarf Johnny!
Steve Jordan! Killing it!

Nothing gets harder and piercer than a myxolydian.
Rise up, blues music! 🔥
holy shit! EPIC HI HATS
THANK YOU. finally positive email and one that makes a lot of sense!
brilliant!
especially pino paladino!!
totally 100% it's a really good version of it, "lately days don't seem the same!!" so awsomely wickedness.
the last riff is from my favorite Hendrix tune...."with the power"........
Ryan King power to love
Power of soul
wow...nice...hopefully one of these days i can comprehend what you just said

he was on fire!
i love that jam they go into at the end
I love his guitar! :D
wow wow wooow what a groove!
o hes a spectacular blues guitarist
Yes more trio stuff! More blues/mo funk!
he's got his own signature snare.
I KNOW! ITS INSANE!!! i love john!
steve jordan owning that drum kit at the end
He uses a Keeley Katana Boost. As all the reviews and video/samples I seen. A rockin' pedal
Pino is sick!
i saw Matt Schofield live a couple of weeks ago at the cheltenham jazz festival! love it! this is freakin awesome!!!
steve jordan rules the world
the jam at the end is fucking awesome
Pino Palladino the KING
@aceman00 i agree totally! what a blend
Awesome.
Turning around a left handed guitar to achieve Jimi's effect is just pure genius
This is a actually a right handed guitar with reverse headstock, the song is still genius though
Esas 6 seis personas que pusieron no me gusta, seguro escuchan Justin Bieber que les atrofia el cerebro pobres! .. JM el mejor artista que hay, sin dudas :D
john mayer duo.
Pino is rocking. look at him bopping his head
Hey mate. Cheers for the explanation. I suppose it was obvious but sometimes you need to ask dumb questions!

he plays a power of soul lick at the end
I love it when John Mayer gets funky and dirty!
@TheComposer1979 its a blues trio, so just him, pino on bass and steve on drums. Hence the term trio in the band name

Who did you think he was? Very groovy.
This has to be the next Cream!
