      I spam it for farming levels. I put all the weak teammates there and spam the arrow rain there.

    You get the new leaders stamina, When replcing units leader. If you maneuver your units well, you potentially have infinite stamina. I do this mostly assist units. The deployment is usually made up of three damage. Two of them bieng magic or range assist and one of them as oposite. I then deploy a healer assist or two, for when stamina gets low.

    • @89Games
      @89Games  10 місяців тому +5

      Nice! I didn't realize the stamina would reset on changing leaders. I'll have to try that now!

      Wait so like spending 1 valor to change leaders also refreshes stamina? That seems like an oversight and kinda OP. Nice!

      @tanklike4413 I don't know if it's still valid. Haven't played after the latest patch. From what I have tested. Stamina is counted from each individual unit. So a fresh unit that is the leader, should have all of its stamina.

    I just finished the game and a pretty major thing that occured to me around Elfheim was that Alain is the only character in the game. His unit is all that matters thanks to his leaderskill and because of the Sigils effectively becoming speed running practice and removing the need to share xp in main fights meaning that you are directly insentivsed to have Alains Unit be the only unit that ever fights. Battles transforms from a dynamic multi sided battle front trying to push through waves of enemies against the clock to a borderline Dynasty warriors style one man army B-lining for the Enemy commander using the valor points to eliminate rest time and obsticals, his allies effectly used to hop scotch over and provide addtional valor skills but never actually fighting.
    The game seems very heavily balanced around Level difference its better to have 1 unit 5 levels above what is expected than 5 units at expected level.

    • @89Games
      @89Games  4 місяці тому

      True, there are definitely some balancing issues that can be taken advantage of. Higher level units do tend to dominate. I still found it necessary to use multiple units myself. Even had one or two I preferred over Alain's unit.

    Here are my tips: At around 35-40% through the game there's a bit of a difficulty spike. You'll be fighting level 17's when you have a lot of level 10-11's and it seems like the enemy is always using units that dodge your attacks. It gets REALLY annoying, so this is when it's a good idea to start leveling up your characters, and a really good way is through the permanent stat buff potions you can buy with colosseum coins. You'll eventually get stuck on the main ladder, and online battles are impossible at this point since everyone has 5 party members and does 150 damage, but you can do the auxiliary battles over and over again, getting you 8-10 CC every time. 2 battles can get you 1 potion for a permanent upgrade. Another way is to promote all of your characters at a fort, because that nets them big gains in stats.

    any tips on dealing with enemy valor skills? I find their often more troublesome to deal with. sudden arrow rains taking out my flyers is not a fun time.

    • @89Games
      @89Games  10 місяців тому +6

      One thing I do sometimes is use the gryphon Knight's valor skill to speed them up so they can get to archers before they can charge arrows rain. That's if you're going after them of course.
      You can also watch for their assist range and try to stay out of it as that also seems to be the range of their valor skills too.
      Virginia's valor skill can protect allies from map damage including from valor skills, or a giants canopy item can do the same.
      They do still catch me off guard too sometimes. As for what I do most often, I charge them with a flying unit lead by ochlys and just take them out fast. Ochlys tends to hold up against archers better than other flies it seems.
      Hope something here helps!

    • @TheRobversion1
      @TheRobversion1 10 місяців тому +3

      Agreed with 89s tips. I will add Dinah's jump valor skill to instantly move to watchtowers to take them out.
      The key is really mobility on your units (yes armored, more fliers and cavs) so you can get to watchtowers fast enough to kill them before they charge valor.

      Nothing comes to mind that mixes realtime strategy with turn-based battles that you can control directly. Games like Triangle Strategy or Tactics Ogre Reborn allow you to control all your units in large turn-based battles, but there is no realtime component or the same level of squad based builds. Unicorn Overlord and its inspiration the Ogre Series from the SNES and N64 days are in a unique genre of their own.
      All that said, there could be something out there with all the newer indie games. I'd love to try something that mixes turn-based tactics and realtime map movement.

    • @Yawar25

      @@R9V3N Dragon's Dogma is the most pretty similar videogame with this concept. In that game, you also control a party of four characters, one is yours and the rest is IA driven. Each character has a class (vocation) so each other needs to enchant their strengths and cover their weakness, and all of this with a Real Time RPG combat system, similar to Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry

    • @R9V3N
      @R9V3N Місяць тому +1

      @@Yawar25 I enjoyed first dragons dogma but I'm trying to find another strategy game that is similar to this while also adding turn based combat. Unicorn Overlord would have been a different monster if that turn based element would have been added. Another game similar to this with that added comes from the early 2000s called Disciples 2: Dark prophecy and it's still a one of a kind game. Hopefully future devs see games like that and dust off some of these old mechanics and create something better with how much technology has advanced.

    • @g.r.4372
      @g.r.4372 Місяць тому

      Maybe Age of Wonders. It's a 4X game that also has a tactical combat layer, I hear. I haven't played it myself, though.
      Darkest Dungeon 1 revolves around setting up party synergy from classes. No tactical layer, just turn-based combat and as the name suggests, it's a dungeon crawler rpg. While the story is pretty sparse and typical Lovecraft stuff, it has lots of unique charm to me.
      XCOM 2 is another game that comes close, tactical futuristic turn game with a overarching strategy layer, featuring a unique cover system. Also based on team synergy, though the highest diff leaves little room for experimenting. People who complain about rng are not using its full bonuses.
      Fire Emblem is a turn tactical JRPG, but combat is automatic.

    Wait - the equipment swap directly before battle thing: was this patched? I wanna say I tried this once and it said equipment can't be changed before battle. It coulda been a slight different situation I was in tho, idr.
    I know there been a patch or two since this video, right?

    • @89Games
      @89Games  8 місяців тому +1

      I don't think so. There was one time where I couldn't switch equipment either and it seemed kinda random because I was able to do it every other time. I think it has to do with trying to swap equipment between characters that are both in the same unit or maybe both deployed but I wasn't able to figure it out.

    • @hintofinsanity
      @hintofinsanity 8 місяців тому +3

      yes, it was patched. You can still swap equipment when out on the field, but you need to do so before the unit in question has come in contact with the enemy to initiate battle

  • @TheAvelt1590
    @TheAvelt1590 9 місяців тому +3

    Maybe when I play TZ mode, assist teams would be needed. But considering you are on the attack 99% of the time, I find they are too slow and only provide mediocre benefits even in early game.

    • @89Games
      @89Games  9 місяців тому +2

      Assists can be very situational in whether they help or not, but they can also really make the difference in some of the tougher fights especially in TZ. To help them keep up, you can keep a cav as the unit leader until you get to the map boss and then switch the assist character to leader. It costs a valor point, but can be helpful, if you've got the valor to spare.

      @TheRobversion1 10 місяців тому +2

      @@89Games my current eltolinde team (of course you can swap other characters who can serve similar purpose):
      BACKLINE:
      1. eltolinde-board nuker, kingslance, sapphire pendant, ruby pendant, sniper amber lens, start of battle boon of the faeries.
      2. amalia- backup nuker, penetrate, hawk eye, important she goes before eltolinde so she debuffs for eltolinde with penetrate (raven plume, notos sword, etc).
      3. gilbert- leader, offensive order, gambler's coin use for amalia and eltolinde, guard order for frontline once they are out of PP. important he goes before eltolinde so raven plume.
      FRONTLINE:
      1. raenys- evade tank so royal scarf, needs max PP for more shining lights, needs to go ahead of eltolinde so she debuffs for her via photon arrow. she has high innate initiative so she may not need raven plume.
      2. ramona- evade tank, purifier staff (to remove debuffs on squad), extra heal to heal squad/boost initiative, restore PP to raenys for more shining lights, quick dispel to remove buffs, royal scarf, needs max PP for more restores.
      Feel free to ask questions. the front is easily interchangeable with other evade/guard tanks you may want to use. amalia can be easily swapped with another debuffer like selvie/aubin or another buffer like govil. ideally 1 of the tanks should be able to heal so you have a healer so another evade tank like sanatio/scarlett or a guard tank like monica/miriam/josef.

    Agreed on the defense hop. I do that too. I do have a designated unit designed to do just that: the slowest squad.
    Ditto on 1 shot kills. Thats how i build my squads. I dont like not being able to finish enemies in 1 fight.
    On assist squads, i dont find heal assist squads valuable. For pusher squads, i find Gilbert and alain essential leaders. This means those 2 shouldnt be on the same team together.
    Personally, i wouldnt recommend equipment swaps as they become a crutch and force the player not to learn how to build optimal squads. For example, once you encounter featherbows, you'd probably equipment swap at 1st to blindness immunity items. The real optimal play here to learn is to value antidebuff gear, elven archers or scarlett/bishops. basically, gear should be used to accentuate your strengths and enable combos while classes should be used for counters and to cover your weaknesses.

      @89Games  10 місяців тому +2

      Well, I got the one shot kill idea from you so I hope you like that one! Lol
      I find the item thing helpful for the "oh crap" moments. But yes it is better to learn how to build against those weaknesses which I try to do after I find them.

      @@89Games agreed. i think initially equipment swaps are fine. then you see other content creators get annoyed by featherbows/wereowls then still shit on elven archers (who IMO is the most underrated class in the game). so they rely on equipment swapping the whole time, curse that they forgot to buy clearsight amulets or curse the featherbows/wereowls, while their elven archers sit on the bench (the permanent solution).

    • @89Games
      @89Games  10 місяців тому +1

      @@TheRobversion1 for sure. I think you're right on elven archers. They're really good for countering debuffs. I used at least one on the last playthrough so I haven't used them on my current playthrough, hence equipping blindness immunity stuff which is working so far.

    • @TheRobversion1
      @TheRobversion1 10 місяців тому +1

      @@89Games yeah pure field + quick cure cant be beat for that purpose. As for alternatives, anti-debuff/affliction gear is useful too as its less situational than anti-blind like the sacral gear, unicorn signet/shield, gran baris (angel shop), etc. The next alternatives are getting the purifier staff (sacred cure, coliseum and albion) as a row version of quick cure. Great to equip those on scarlett or sanatio. Then, the worst version is the refresh on bishops.

      Its only the coliseum thats a real challenge and thats when the enemies there have a 20-25 level advantage over you. Try climbing the coliseum early (level 25-30).
