i've read some comments about how this shows the Ashley/Halsey parallel but I personally noticed another metaphor: showing contrast between being in a manic state where the world looks much brighter and everyone seems to come to your show and you look your best vs when you feel shit and the world seems dark and you feel that no one is there for you. And even though your state of mind is so different, essentially you're in the same space, singing the same song.

I heard this song for the first time at the beginning of the pandemic. Its intense weight has stuck with me since then. It is such a raw and emotional song that describes feelings any of us could only be so lucky to feel.

i love how there's two versions of her, one that all the people see, the happy one with all the glam, and the other one singing in the dark, alone, in ordinary clothes and makeup. the first one's halsey, the second is ashley.
and i think that's the reason why the song has two names too. just hear me out. she says "i think it's finally safe for me to fall", which sounds positive, right? that's halsey's title, because she looks happy too. but then we have "beautiful strangers only come along to do me wrong", and that's what ashley, who looks so dark and sad, sings.
there's also a connection to clementine that i've noticed, which looks like the most ridiculous thing ever. you'll see that "Finally" is capitalised, while "beautiful stranger" isn't, and that's what it has in common with clementine. clementine is a very special song to ashley, and she did the music video with her brother too. there, she was true ashley, so maybe beautiful stranger is the title that real ashley chose.
but i think there could also be another way to look at all of this. halsey talks openly about her being bipolar, so maybe this is representation of her manic episodes (happy halsey) and depressive episodes (dark halsey). and seeing a little bit of what this album looks like and how close to her it is, this could also be the right way to see it. 🌻

This song hit so home for me. I grew up with a lot of issues that I thought would make it impossible to be in a relationship. I felt unlovable. But the person who is now my fiancé let me feel safe. And a lot of the descriptions fit my fiancé too- hips like Jagger and two left feet for sure.
And the dichotomy in the video of her feeling free when no one is around vs being appreciated for a fiscade plays into the lyrics so well because someone who truly loves you will love you for both sides. They will love you for the mask you put on in public and be with you when you’re in your comfy clothes rocking out with air guitar and being goofy. They’re your audience and your biggest fan.

The pre-chorus section of this song (the dancing in my living room part) is as close to musical magic as is ever accomplished IMHO. You can't capture a feeling like what she's singing about any better than that. The melody, the passion, the subtle cracking in her voice ... it's freaking perfection. I love how this song so beautifully expresses the dichotomy experienced while dating these days. So many strangers out there and every time you meet someone new, you dress up all good and put your best foot forward, but deep down you're all doubtful, hoping if this will finally be it while still dealing with the damage "strangers" from the past have put you through. Even if I don’t like them all, I feel like part of me still will because I love to support people who just do them. I tend to love all of her songs though, New Americana didn’t do it for me though, neither did closer.
