New York City Subway | Front Window View: 219th Street to South Ferry

- One of the many great things about the New York City Transit Museum's Low-V Nostalgia fan trip was we were able to get those great views out of the front of the train. Up until the design of the R44 subway car in the early 1970's, New York City's subway cars were designed with small operator cabs, known by many as "half cabs." This design allowed any spectator to directly see out of the front window on the train, known as the "railfan window."
Modern subway cars have evolved to having the operators cab span the entire length of the subway car, so these views directly out of the front of the train became obstructed. With the retirement of the R32's in January 2022, there are no more subway cars in the NYC Subway System that have railfan windows. These kinds of views are now only available during special occasions when older equipment is placed into service on Fan Trips.
This trip will begin at 219th Street on the IRT White Plains Road Line, served by the (2) Train, and travel downtown to the South Ferry Loop on the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line. Because this was a ticketed-only fan trip, we will not be making any stops along the way.
This kind of view is hard to achieve for this line. Most of the Subway cars that had "Railfan Windows" were removed from service on the (2) train in the early 2000's. Additionally, the South Ferry Loop Station, served by the (1) train until its closure in 2017, has not used rolling stock containing "Railfan Windows" since the 1980's.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

The train moves like turtle, despite it runs third express line
I think NYC Subway railfans usually like a slow speed.
3:13 Riding on the center express track to avoid people wanting to catch a train to ride today.
Speed isnt everything. Quality of video is crystal clear.
It was fast enug
"Express" refers to number of stops...not speed.
Train in the videos is a Low v their old their not supposed to run fast
Some people are complaining how slow the train is moving but are forgetting that NYC subway system is over a hundred years old and it wasn't built to travel at high speeds because most of the stations are considerably close .
Also this is an elevated track that is moving over and through densely populated neighborhoods . The speed must be moderate for safety and noise purposes .
The train is moving even slower because there are people working on the tracks . It is why the train operator is blowing the horn when approaching a work area on the tracks .
If you think the train is moving slowly then try driving in NYC traffic and you'll discover how faster it is traveling on the "slow" trains .
you tell 'em boy!
I'm SO sad the journey ended on a low note (underground) I would've wanted to see more of that BEAUTIFUL New York summer day!!
This is a great capture. It truly brings back the RFW we all experienced with the classic trains so we appreciate you for taking the time to record and share with us; thank you.
@@train_n_travel_productions We appreciate you for sharing that. There are a bunch of artist like us and yourself out there, we're just fortunate to have the ability to do it. We appreciate the continued support.
I can just smell the city. Awesome.
Thanks for the ride! Wish more subway cars had railfan windows!
You and me both!
*Thanks for the video!*
You're welcome!
It is interesting to see the subway above the ways.
Interesting trip.
Great video, you could have speeded it up times 4, and no one would have known.
0:40 "now where are we going?"
"back to where we started! shut up! daddy needs his train video!"
Sir can you put the locations up on the screen as the train passes them? That would make the video soooo cool
Hello! Yes, that will be a separate video we are currently working on. Stay tuned!
Hello i was just on d manhattan subway Massive city 20million?? All Aboard Nice Trip from Ireland
9:08: What's a scooter doing on the platform? That is unthinkable in Hamburg. And about the windows: Before the DT4 trains and the DT3 refits in Hamburg, Germany, the DT1 (though I'm not sure with the DT1), DT2, and non-refit DT3 did not have any front facing window from the passenger section, just a door to the train driver cap and a wall. The few DT3 refits still left, the DT4, the DT5 and likely the upcoming DT6 will keep those windows. And those windows are big enough to allow you to also see how the train is operated.
Why do some areas of the track appear so much cleaner as others? Around 6:30-7:30 for instance. And what are those yellow "sidewalks" along the track, are those for emergencies and evacuation? Those suddenly disappear around 6:30 and are not existing underground.

I guess the train operator is in no hurry 😮😂
That was an express train on the 1 Line.
Very cool, shame it wasn’t at 4K 60fps though 😢
In some years when subway runs without driver the whole front will be a window I think 🙂
This seems like I am playing GTA 4
Something the train is going too fast, it needs to be slower
What type of special train was the last part of the video? Non-stop with a whistle instead of a horn to the loop at SF. Also you need to check your frame rate-slow and choppy.
probably a transit museum excursion historical train, which explains the careful speed, non-stopping, background reference to "turning around and going back", and no longer standard horn sound.
What view are the people on the platforms getting that is causing them to stop and take pictures of the front car?
Great video, thank you. However, do people really talk non stop on public transport in the US? Talk, talk, talk. Thank goodness for the official ‘silent’ carriage in Sydney. No phones, no talking….bliss.
Quiet carriages are very common all over the world. It’s not specific to your city.
The commuter rails in the NYC surrounding suburbs have quiet carriages, but not the subway. Most subway's are generally much quieter than this though. Because this was a fan-trip, it was mostly railfans and many were chatting along the ride.
@@assistanttrailerparksuperv6839 I know, but Sydney is not my city. Born there, grew up there, now live in the country. Even without a quiet carriage the talk is constant! It is amazing.

OH Man All D Work Building NYC Subway Wow i wish i knew wr this train st arted n ended?? Big Tks from Ireland
This has a very nervous driver driving the train.
AWEsome video when watched on mute.
subway of one of the most vibrant cities in the world that too in worlds most powerful country in such a pathetic condition 😂😂😂
Wow that amount of trash in the lower tunnels. Great vid though.
I can’t stand the constant blabbing. Wish I could edit the humans out.
Why don't they paint the trains into nice colours? Looks shity)
So bloody slow
Slowest ass train ever.
Zzzzzzzzz
