From its inaugural run in 1899, the Long Island Rail Road's (LIRR) famous "Cannonball" train remains one of its premier services. This special seasonal train operates on Fridays from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This train runs express from New York's Penn Station to the Hamptons in Long Island, New York, taking slightly less than three (3) hours to complete the 118-mile journey.
While its consists has varied over its years of operation, today, the train consists of two (2) EMD DM30AC Locomotives, one at each end, with twelve (12) C3 multi-level coaches, making this train the longest diesel/dual mode consists operated by the LIRR. Because of the train's excessive length, which exceeds the size of the platforms of all the stations it serves, except Penn Station, the train commonly makes two (2) stops at each station. Unique to the "Cannonball" train, two (2) drumheads are placed on each end of the train with the "Cannonball" logo.
While the LIRR operates many extra seasonal trains to the Hamptons on Fridays during the summer, the "Cannonball" is the only one, as well as the only LIRR train in general, to retain its historic name. Seen here are some clips of the "Cannonball" train throughout the summer of 2024!
