if a camera is right up against the glass, you only need a clean spot of about an inch in diameter.
Lol the ttc only has one train assigned to one line so they’re no such things as a A or C train on the same line makes it easier so you can just hop on any train that comes and will still bring you to the same station lol
Love being on the express trains and seeing the stations skipped. On the other hand it can be a frustrating wait if you're on the platform of a local station and seeing express trains pass by.
It's ever more frustrating if you mistakenly get on an express when your stop is a local and watch it whiz by! Been there, done that!
I'll admit that that could be frustrating when you actually need to be somewhere, but it's not so bad when you're not "in a rush." One of the best rail experiences I've had was standing on the platform of a Shinkansen (Japanese bullet train) and one of their "express" trains passing by me at almost 200 mph! Even the more "local" lines don't "slow down" when skipping stops right next to the platform. "Common sense" dictates Japanese rail safety and, at least for them, it works.

@Portland Native Naw, I actually lived in Japan for 7 years; by order of the US Navy.
It's a pain being on a local platform and having the train go by. Even stranger when the engineer hardly slows down. They seem to have cracked down on that for the last several years.
Lived in New York for 40 years and rode every subway line. Enjoyed riding the trains. Keep the videos coming. Brings back memories.

When i was younger, i would ride every NYC train first stop to last, just like this. I would be pissed if someone had the front window spot before me!
I used to ride the PATH train, and I used to be pissed off when someone was already there standing by the windows. The old PATH train car that had brown and beige seats had two front windows you can look out of. One while sitting on the very first seat, and the other on the sliding door that was locked, for safety reasons of course. My favorite spot was standing at the sliding door window with my back turned to everybody else.

Same here and I’m old enough that we were able to have the top of the window down and we got the breeze in our face and the smell of the air in the tunnel… this was in the early 60’s. . Watching these videos brought back all those great memories

yup me too. I used to play hookie from school and ride the trains everywhere. always had to watch out for the truancy offers though.

I rode all the lines in the city including Staten Island when I was in high school back in 1962; there was no free transfers between trains and buses and you paid an extra fair on the Rockaway line that was collected when you got off the train. It all seemed so weird to me at the time. I saw parts of the city I probably would not have seen had I not been adventurous! I told my parents I had late classes that kept me coming in late! The Rockaway line was the most interesting riding over Jamaica Bay followed by the Staten Island Rapid Transit where I actually saw farms and farm animals that seemed totally undisturbed by a subway running by their pastures! I was an urbanrailer back then and still am today! I love subways and the whole urban transit scene!
That's kinda odd, collecting fare when you get off the train. When you say 1962 it's before the MTA existed and the subway was operated by a private company, there were actually 3 private subway companies so that's probably why there weren't free transfers.
@@NeighborSenpai Not exactly. While the MTA wasn't around all subway lines were owned and run by the City (NYCT) After June 1940. Free transfers and connections came about in the 1940s. Train to Bus transfers came in 1997/98 with the Metro Card gold. The Rockaway line was opened in 1956 from old LIRR trackage there was a Double fare until the mid 1970's. From what I understand it was sort of a tax to help pay for construction or reconstruction of the line. The A run's 31miles for $2.75 one of the best deals anywhere.

@@rgalesnyc Yes, though they've increased the interline transfers underground since the 1980s. Before that, it was difficult to transfer from BMT to IND or IRT except for very big stations like Times Sq and Union Sq.
28:00. This is the ramp that was added. Originally, this was a Long Island Railroad line that continued North. On your right, you'll see the original right of way, which is still there, but abandoned. Looking forward, we swing left and merge into the Fulton El.
32:40. Glance to your right. Notice the iron work? That was the original route. The line continued above ground into Manhattan. It was the Fulton El. When the BMT went out of business, the city tore down that part of the El, and rerouted it into the subway.

@@wadeharris3535 Oh man! I'd have to look it up. Basically, the city wanted to kill the BMT and IRT. Look at the parallels. In the Bronx, the IND Concourse line just TROLLS the Jerome Avenue 4 line. It's a block away! They built the IND A line UNDER THE FULTON EL! So, when the BMT went bust, they demolished the Fulton El but left the spur from like Euclid to Lefferts and just built a ramp from the A and tied it into the El. Similar to the J. Demolished it East of 121st and built a ramp down to the new Parsons Archer station. Make no mistake. The city wanted control of all mass transit, and got it in the 40s.
I make it up to New York every couple of years (I live near Tulsa). I find these little historical items fascinating; something new to look for during my next visit.

Nope. Unification happened on June 1, 1940, and the City of New York took over all the lines that was previously owned (and built) by private companies, BMT/BRT and IRT (even though there many lines that predate the BMT/BRT and IRT such as the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 9th Avenue Els in Manhattan and the 5th Avenue, Myrtle Avenue, Lexington Avenue, Fulton Street and Broadway-Brooklyn (to forrmer stub terminal at Cypress Hills) Els in Brooklyn. The IND was the only former division that was city-owned initially.
While it was rerouted into the subway (IND Fulton St Subway), the Fulton St IND and Fulton Street El co-existed for awhile. The IND Fulton St Subway (A/C Trains) opened to Rockaway Avenue Station on 4/9/1936 while the portion of the Fulton St EL west of Rockaway Avenue Station to Fulton Ferry Station closed on 5/31/1940.
The Fulton St Subway was extended from Rockaway Avenue Station to B'way-East New York on 12/30/1946. The section from B'way-East New York station to Euclid Avenue station opened on 11/28/1948. The final section, the connection from Euclid Avenue to the former Fulton Street El west of 80th-Hudson (including the Grant Avenue Station), opened on 4/29/1956. The part of the Fulton St El from Rockaway Avenue Station to west of 80th-Hudson Street Station closed on April 26/27, 1956 and demolished in early 1958.

Story time...the island you see around the 14:00 mark i was stranded on with my friends a few years ago. We went canoeing and it was ridiculously windy. We were rowing but the wind and current were pushing us further out into the bay. At one point we were holding on to the columns under the train tracks. We finally made it to that island but needed to be on the other side to get back to our friends. The tide was high and there was no way we were going to make it against the current. One friend suggested we take the canoe and walk across the tracks! I strongly urged against that. Salt water, heavy canoe, 3rd rail, active tracks = 1 way ticket to meet out maker.
We hung out for a few hours, exploring the island, getting tans and having some beverages. Eventually the tide lowered and we were able to walk underneath to the other side.
Ill never forget that day and always look at our beach spot when i pass on the train.

Doug Archer you need to Visit. It’s worth the trip. With that said, despite its many issues ie garbage and trash, overcrowding, sometimes crime and some badly infrastructure upgrades, the scenery on the N.Y. subways especially here on the “A” train ‘s outdoor aka elevated sections is worth the trip.

Crime as a problem is a past time in New York, especially manhattan. Don’t listen to that mumbo jumbo (outside the latest riots). Anywho, New York is amazing, overcrowding and those things are only an issue in midtown, rest of New York is lovelyyyy. Lived here 10 years.

Haha, the fence to the left of track after the Broad Channel stop is my work, we put it in after the Sandy storm swept all off the tracks and surrounding areas away into the bay !

Brings back sweet memories of my youth back. In the early 70’s.
I've been watching some of the various front window/cab view videos of different rail systems in different places around the world. I was just recently watching ones from Holland in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. I have to say this about NYC's subway. It may not be pretty or aesthetically pleasing for site seeing and tours. But it more than makes up for that in it's utilitarian use, the complexity of the lines, and the many levels/layers that make up the various crisscrossing lines of the NYC subway system. It really is a marvel with just how much is built under the city, a vast complex that few in the world really know about. It's pretty much an underground city in and of itself.

In the 70's I used to work in "the city" when I lived in Rosedale, Queens. Not far from JFK
I used to take the Q5 into Jamaica at Parsons blvd, took the "E" to Rockerfella Plaza and always stood in the front at the window, but on the way home from work (across from St. Pats) I'd hang in BETWEEN cars and smoke a joint! Damn, crazy yes, fun yes! I was 16!

@@RandomUser2401 I doubt that. The winds in a tornado can top 200mph. The winds in a hurricane can top 150mph. EF 5 tornadoes throw 18 wheeled semis. They can throw cars for miles. The EF 5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri in 2011 leveled the entire town, even big stores like Walmart and Home Depot. The front wall of the Home Depot collapsed. You could see the inside of the Walmart from a helicopter. There was a multi story hospital built out of concrete and steel. The top floor was ripped off and the entire hospital was shifted off its foundation. It had to be demolished and rebuilt. No sturdy concrete building that was in the path of the tornado survived. Houses are built out plywood. Some are built out of bricks. The brick houses were destroyed just as easily as the plywood houses. Many stone and concrete buildings were destroyed to. The amount of damage was 2.8 billion dollars. I’m sure your not from the us because the us happens to be the tornado capital of the world and you seem very ignorant of their immense power. People who live in countries that don’t experience many tornadoes seem to be very ignorant of them.
During Sandy my Street West 42nd Street was under 5 feet of water we were evacuated that day as I went home to Rye New York to stay with my parents as we didn't have electricity for 8 days. I applied to FEMA and they put me up at the W for 3 months directly across the street from the 911 Memorial. The an additional month at Gild Hall.
Thanks to this video i discovered Rockaway Beach. Living here in NYC for so long and i had never been there. I went multiple times this past summer. It was GREAT.

I love in this video the fact that when one crosses the Bay, the bridge is only the track. It's so thin. You have the water right there.

What a joy!!! I loved riding this line over the Beach Channel bridge. I lived out in the Rockaways from 1987 and on and off until about 1990 and had the time of my life. This is wonderful footage. Thank you so much.
Truly gives me a new perspective and appreciation of the amazing New York subway system.
I love operating the 32s on that line. This is as good as it gets for an old-school motorman. C line and J line also had that equipment.
dkeithtag the R32s are not only the best subway cars ever for NYC, maybe the best ever anywhere on the planet. However it’s long time for it to retire. Heard they should be totally gone by the latest around 2022.
They did give them a great sendoff, at least.

When I was younger, I took this train to Brooklyn every day. This brings back some memories of looking out of the front window for a while.
I used to live in Far Rockaway. And take the A train. Good view.
From 1986 to 1990, I used the A from Mott Avenue or Beach 25th to Rockaway Boulevard to attend John Adams High School.

Be aware there are 2 A trains. One travels to and from Lefferts blvd. the other goes out to Far Rockaway. The Far Rock A train is used if you’re going to JFK Airport. That’s the one with this view in the video.
Don't forget the S shuttle from Broad Channel to Beach 116th Street at the other end of the Rockaway Peninsula.
Vanessa Yates the one to Rockaway park is only a rush hour service. I personally think the C should be extended to Lefferts

Thanks for posting these. I'm from Missouri and we have The Metro Link but none of it goes underground. I didn't realize that part of the subway lines that the trains travel on aren't underground. I'd really like to visit NYC and tour all the stations one day, as well as all the attractions.

When I was there in 1965-66 it was just 15 cents if I remember right. Seems there there people complaining of this increase from just 10 cents. I think I still have some tokens around some place.

My stop growing up was 125th St and 8th Ave (the A or D train); or 125th and Broadway (the 1 tain). I lived on 125th and Amsterdam Ave, which was in between both lines.

I grew up in the Montreal area and, if I was coming home (to Pincourt) from downtown Montreal, I took a commuter train that went over water too, but that was a relatively high bridge over a river (Ottawa River, Sainte Anne Rapids). The view from the A-Train on those long low bridges between islands just a few feet over Jamaica Bay with water on both sides are spectacular like nothing else I've ever seen on a commuter rail system.
52:40. Hoyt & Schermerhorn. Some conductors said 'Skipperhorn!' Such a big station in my life, and so many movies filmed subway scenes there and upstairs in the halls!

I used to live on 181st on this line but i never rode past 80th Hudson, beautiful all the open space tree lines and water for miles.

After seven years of riding the much faster, more efficiently run train lines in Japan (JR, Keikyu, Shinkansen), I thought I was permanently jaded over NYC's relatively antiquated lines. But stumbling upon this video invoked the joy and wonder I had riding over/under/through NYC during my childhood (in fact, back then I enjoyed the train rides TO Coney Island more than the rides AT Coney Island itself; go fig). I'm certain, however, that had I been a regular NYC commuter as an adult, I wouldn't enjoy this as much as I do now...

When I ride trains or watch these videos i think about all the labor and hours that went into developing railways.... All the miles upon miles of tracks and rails that have to be laid and tunnel systems that have to be created.

Hey DJ Hammers - I'm a Underground (Subway) Operator in London and I found your channel after this video autoplayed after something I was watching, this has led me to the videos FanRailer does and also the TWU Local 100, given me a great insight as Train Daddy took over where I work yesterday!
Operators in NY really do have a very skilled job, looking at the way that the operator negotiates the 'one shot' and 'two shot' sections, with signals clearing en cue as well as observing junction signals for diverging routes (we have a totally different method in the UK) is a real pleasure for me. Also browsing a NY Subway forum it seems their route knowledge takes in several lines, to keep that knowledge and skill deserves credit.
Thanks for posting and giving people who have never visited America a taste of what goes on - hopefully I'll get over one day to see the real thing! The bit that threw me the most was that the normal direction of travel is on the opposite side of ours (as well as this business of half cabs - something which doesn't happen in London)....

@@DJHammersTrains Thanks for your kind reply and I agree the NYC Subway and it's practices are very interesting - particularly with the amount of manual signalling in towers that still goes on. @@Captainpubwatch Which line are you on? I was on LU from 89 to 03. Worked Northern and Central as a guard/motorman and later on H&C. And yeah I think we had it easier in terms of the stuff we had to learn, one rolling stock, one line, unlike NY where it's several rolling stocks and several lines on a whole division.
That would equate to knowing all LU surface stock and lines, or all tube stock and lines. Too much for my brain, I had enough trouble with one.

riding nyc trains for over 60 years but about 20 years ago rode this route for 1st time it was amazing going over the water on a foggy rainy day on the way to the racetrack felt like yo were in a scary movie

@@nasdaqua For me it worked out well because, back in the day, I grew up on 125th Street and Amsterdam Ave, but I went to High School in Brooklyn, so the A or D express segment from 125th St & 8th directly to 59th St & Columbus Circle saved me a lot of time both ways. But I hear you! It's no party during rush hour, which is when I hopped on.
I live in Texas now. Originally born in the Bronx but those subway rides always cleared my head. I would ride them just for the fun of it.
I remember a time when the conductor had to go outside and stand between to cars in order to operate the doors in rain,. snow, freezing cold or boiling summer heat. Even back then I used to wonder why no one thought of putting the door controls inside the train! Looking back, what a perilous job that was!

The stretch from 59 to 125 is 🤤
it's the longest non stop stretch on all of the subway lines... the A and D trains..from 59th to 125th st and vice versa.
This used to be a great ride on the R38s, where it felt like you were going 98mph.

Love the way this was shot. The perspective is right in the middle…very trippy. There is a spot light coming from the headlights but you still get a sense of the darkness, not washed out like the others I've seen. 👍
Hated when the PATH replaced the old trains with the Bombardiers where you can't see out the front.
Absolutely blows my mind how many miles of tunnel there is.

WOW 😮 this was awesome seeing. I can’t believe I use to ride that “A” train from Nostrand Ave(Brooklyn) all the way to the Dyckman 200 stop in the late 70s to visit my boyfriend. That ride was well over a hour & back then there were no portable gadgets to help enjoy such a long ride. I miss the 70s & 80s ☹️

I'm an operator for the subway line. I've done this run many times. It may look cool to operate a train but after you do it for six months the novelty of it wears off real quick.

What a great ride! It brought back memories of how as soon as you hit Brooklyn from Manhattan, the tracks seemed to get rough and bumpier! Lol!
A terrific ride. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Boy, the way those drivers steer along those thin rails - and in the dark too! Worth every cent they are paid!

I’ve been taking this A train for the last 15 years or so..... crazy when I actually think about it lol. From high school to adulthood, still riding the A 😂😂😂 from far rockaway to Manhattan to work!
The SUBWAYS are still the quickest and most economical way to travel within NYC. They just CAN'T be beat!

As a foreigner, This gives me almost a first hand look at NY. There seems to be a lot more 'normal' neighbourhoods than I imagined. I'll be honest I thought it was a bit more high rise.
Most of the areas of the subway running nears high rises are underground :D

There's no way you would love doing this every day...i guarantee you that.. Been doing it ( not the whole distance) for over 50 years...by circumstance, not choice.

I loved riding this line as a kid in the 70's, especially to the beaches, but got spooked a couple of times getting mugged going through Broad Channel and through what used to be Hammels Wye headed into Far Rockaway.
I'd bet you'd change your mind sooner than later...
