haven’t played in about a year because i’ve always sucked at Pvp and honestly sinking multiple hours into a voyage just to end up losing everything at the end to someone who puts just a little “gg” in chat as if they didnt just casually waste my past few hours of game time . I try not to get salty about it but as someone with a regular 9-5 i really don’t have a lot of time to put into video games in general which is a shame because i absolutely love the pirate gameplay loop of digging up chests and fighting skeletons. Will definitely be jumping back in to experience safer seas, even with getting less gold as a reward.

Im gonna continue doing exactly what I've been doing since launch, (digging up buried treasure) but now I can finally do so without raising my blood pressure to legitimately unhealthy levels via the paranoia required to solo sloop.

But to answer your question, because it's the best damn sailing and treasure hunting game I've ever played with amazing atmosphere and an art style that makes random screenshots more beautiful and picturesque than any of the places I've been to in the real world.
Unfortunately for both of us, I find zero enjoyment in the PvP, and don't have the time (nor desire) to become a sweatlord.
So excuse me for liking a game you like for different reasons than you. Believe me, if SoT had a comparable alternative on the market that didn't include forced multiplayer as a core concept, I would be there instead.

Would love to use my captained ship on Safer Seas, and I do hope this changes in the future, but as it is I am very happy that my friends and I will finally, *f i n a l l y* be able to play the story without getting harrassed out of the game.
I do understand their balance to keep Captained ships out but I got a fun idea. You have to Pledge the Ship to Safer seas, can only be a Sloop type and can’t get any Legendary Achievements.
It's nonsense of them to have taken away the captained ship, emissary flag and sovereigns. I hope this can be added to Safe Seas in the future. Everything else I really liked.

All the people crying about this are the same people who prey on new players because theyre an easy target. yall will still have other veterans to fight.
its not about fighting veterans its about it being a pirate game and everybody being a potential target for piracy; deliberately removing this ruins the game as its designed to allow for those interactions. Maybe if they wanted to decrease the skill gap they wouldve kept arena and promoted it more because as of rn i and many others have roughly a 3-4 year skill headstart/gap from the rest of the playerbase
@@samuraidog1510 No because SoT can also be a family friendly game by it's gameplay that older or younger people can't enjoy if they keep getting sunk all the time by people who play the game since 5 years. They'll just being frustrated and move on, not a great thing to welcome new players. This feature isn't a new thing in online game in general. For example, Apex Legens recently added specials lobbys with bots for new players because the game is way too hard for new players when they join the normal lobbys (same for fortnite). Yes people will learn later the hard way, but it's normal to have a safe introduction to the game, longer than maiden voyage. If they added this, it's certainly because they saw on their stats that their playerbase isn't renewed and doing this is the right thing, otherwise the game will be filled with old players that eventually will leave the game because the player base isn't evolving. Remember also that you certainly played a lot of online games, fps, or whatever and sometimes, for some players, sea of thieves is their introduciton to online games, it can be a lot to learn, and highly discouraging and frustrating when you know the behaviour of people online. This feature is a good thing for new players and also old players because the game will attract new people thx to this.
@samuraidog1510 right, but with this update you will only be losing out on your easy prey and it gives players a chance to learn other parts of the game before giving pvp a shot, pvp is not the only part of the game...

A beginner's area is a great addition for the game, i've always felt bad for the kids and new people who've been thrown in with the big guys.

Iv heard people say that tall tales aren’t a risk anymore because of the check point system. But its really buggy and they don’t work all the time. All the items that are buried despawn for example and you have to start the TT again.
Totally agree! It also means that if my whole 4-man squad are on we can play on the High Seas together, but if I just want to sail with my partner and do some chill content, we can do that in Safer Seas and not get ruined by a galleon!
honestly i love that youre finally adding this. some things i dont get (like why arent you allowed captain of your own ship) but sure as heck i will put every free second i have back to the game with my buddies. its not like many of us dislike the pvp but it became rlly boring. you constantly had to be scared to get clapped by some 5k hour crew of 4... and you just were not able to chill. this changes everything. thank you.
If they allowed captain ship it would be to easy to make money, you could sell at the sovereign.

Agreed. This update got the game on my radar again (I was never good at the game) and I just jumped into High Seas with randoms. Got a very seasoned captain and then me and another noob. Had a good run of fighting ghosts ship with another sloop (so another friendly crew) and found 4 Ritual Skulls for the Fort of the damned.
While fighting the Fort I was on lookout and another ship then sank ours (3 seasoned dued on their ship...)
All ritual skulls gone and we didn't finish the fort once.

I really hope they expand on safer seas I’d love to have the full experience in both a pve and pvp server setting and a private setting so guilds can all take part in big events right now it’s not easy joining friends in game especially if they prefer to use a small boat limiting how many can join a spawn in on your boat in thier server option needs to be a thing

@abyssal-labs I get that but I have hundreds of hours in SOT and I only look for players and even looking for players can take up to an hour to find anyone. It is 100% possible to play and almost never run into anyone for an hour or so.

This is great news. My friends and myself were enjoying the normal game until griefers decided we shouldn't be having fun. We are older gamers and we don't have much time to play together or meet up in real life so this is great addition for us.

Average POV of a PvPer: Join server ---> look for ship for 10 minutes ---> don't find ship: Server hop or find ship ---> Get sunk: Lose absolutely nothing, not much time wasted nor any loot on board or Sink enemy player: Gain loot, potentially loot that took hours to grind for.
Basically zero risk for potentially alot of reward. That is whats pathetic man. And Rare doesn't do anything to discourage this pathetic playstyle. Grοw a pair and perhaps have hours of loot on your board and then PvP. Maybe people will be incentivised to fight you then.
PvPers that don't engage in PvE is whats the problem with this game. And then they have the audacity to run their mouths when they are vaIueIess and bring nothing to the table.
Without PvErs you can't rob anyone and your whοle purpοse is nullified. Without PvPers, PvErs can still find enjoyment from the game.

Should also make private servers available so you can have boat battles with friends - it would be great fun to have friends on a different ship in the server. The option should be there almost like a pre approved alliance
Just get you and a couple friends, ideally have at least 2 from the same region, and vote up hourglass and dive at the same time, that’s what me and my buddies do to TDM
Players have been asking for this for at least 4 years now! But only streamers and partners can make private servers. It exists in game but it's only for the partners.

This is going to be awesome to play with friends who don't enjoy the PvP aspects too much. It was a big turn off for my friends to loot for a few hours just lose it all in a matter of seconds to a more seasoned pirate crew.

I've been waiting for this for so long. I gave up on the tales after gettign 90% of the way through the same one 4 separate ties only to have my ship sunk and stuff stolen right near the end.
That's not even how the game works... you get checkpoints during tall tales and you can save up to three of them at a time...

I’m so excited for this!! I’ve been pirate legend for a couple years already, and while I can deal with pve bosses and stuff just fine, admittedly I’m not very good at pvp. I definitely still intend to do high seas when I’m playing with friends, but when I’m catching up on all my tall tales commendations or just chilling alone, safer seas is definitely where I’ll do it

Pvpers coming at you when doing tall tales is just like a bug nagging you, it's not a matter of skills, your ship is empty, you're not in the mood for it and it just breaks immersion. Not even mentioning the risk of re-starting the whole story if some key items are on board and are lost.. I wasted big time to lose pvpers (who strangely didn't know how to set seals against the wind lmao, talking about skills..) because i was on a tale, onboarding key items ^^
Out of that, pvp is ok and clearly increases the games interest, no questions asked

I have been playing since day one and achieved pirate legend in the first year and I am still excited about this new game mode. I'm getting older and, between work and maintaining my home, I don't have as much time to play. I have never been skilled at PVP and it will be nice to be able to spend a couple hours here and there in the game without being concerned my time will be wasted because my PVP is lacking.
This. But I also appreciate the fact I don't have to try wildly to get other continent friends in the same server...

Coming from an experienced PVP player, this addition is great for everyone! It will allow families with children to play the game without having to worry about hot mics and/or trolls. It will also be great for new players to start their first few adventures without having to worry about other players. For us, the more experienced playerbase, we will have the High Seas servers filled with more experienced players, as the non pvp playerbase will be reduced by safer seas! I'm hoping the PVP quality and eagerness to fight in the High Seas will increase with this new addition.

Not really. PvPvE is a niche interest. They knew PvE has higher potential popularity before development even started.
I don't care what anyone says, this update is one of the most important for the LONGEVITY of this game.

Great idea, I leveled up to PL and athena 10 as a solo slooper in the first year of SoT and it was quite 'rough'.
It's awesome to see that ppl can learn the game at their own pace or just go chill, gives the people on High Seas a better fight too.
A friend of mine recently started SoT and I hope he gets hooked to SoT and we can rampage the High Seas together once he gets the basics (or not also ok :) ).
Great to read parents can have a fun time together with kids as well, although most ppl I sail with have an informal rule to stop combat once it's clear it's a parent with their kids, we're pirates not douchebags.

I am so EXCITED for this! I've been wanting to catch up on the Tall Tales for so long without being interrupted by PvPer's who are just looking for a fight...
Plus a couple of my friends have recently started to express interest in the game, and Safer Seas will be a GREAT way for me to play with them and help them find their groove without having their first experiences possibly ruined by said PvPer's!

The loot reduction is just lip service for the toxic players who have been against pve servers for years. i just love the excuses they always come up with its always for selfish reasons them not wanting it that mainly being they lose out on ez kills cus only good players with be in high seas. honestly let all thoese people quit the game the community will be better off without them.

Working a full time job or full time school, spending 3 hours of your free time looting only to instantly die to a double gun and harassed via mic by a basement dwelling goblin isn't a format that's going to make your game grow. We wouldn't be having this problem if the devs weren't afraid to rework PVP into something a lot more balanced and less punishing. That's what they should've done. Safer Seas is just them shitting on the idea of the game for the sake of ignoring the problem.

Been waiting for this for a good year or more now. Really pleased it's finally here, I just hope they continue to expand it and give us even more freedom! Nice to see so many others in the comments who love the game but prefer a more relaxed experience - not all of us enjoy PvP!
Well now the question is answered on if I should come back to the game. This'll make playing way more fun!!
Play with friends, learn skills and enjoy yourselves. And if your feeling lucky, try the high seas and see what happens. If you feel good in your skills then stick around but if you need the Safer Seas to relax and have your fun? Then do that as well.

My thought exactly! Don't know how you feel about third-person, but from the PS store listing I thought that's what was on offer and was in heaven! It doesn't mention first-person anywhere in the listing, and there's only a tiny smidge of fps in the video clip... worse than musicals that try to look like they're not musicals!
If Ubisoft could do it for Black Flag, I don't see why Rare can't for the Safer Seas version at least. After having read about the history since finding out it's fp only, I know it was a design decision, but that was for PvP and PvE is an entirely different audience. From planning to pre-order the deluxe edition (yes, I wanted that parrot AND the doggo), the dealbreaker of fp only has hit my 🥰 against the wall with a hard 🌊 goodbye.
Excited for this with tall tales. But everything else will do High Seas.
It would be cool if they doubled down on the story side of it. Bring back the old adventures in safer seas to let people play through them and let them see the world progress.

So far I would agree, but then those Pirates get crapped on in High Seas, since PvP plays SO differently than PvE and they just choose to stay in Safer Seas.
It's often been said that Safer Seas is good for New Players to learn Stuff but I fear you learn the wrong Things. You don't learn to adjust sail, you never see how Players helm, you never learn to fight on your Ship, to defend from Boarders, how and why to use Chainshots and all that.
What you learn is to afk Sail to the next Island, Fight Bosses without looking at the Horizon for Ship Checks and yeah. Thats it.
This Way, the Transition from Safer Seas to High Seas is EXTREMELY tough.

There’s going to be people (like my little sister) who will probably never play the base game, but this is a great way to share this with them. As for the PvP issues themselves, those feel more systemic. There’s always going to be good players in a game, but something open world like this gives you a wide variety of players. It would help more if arena was still a mode where people could improve, but alas no more.

This is honestly so disappointing. I don't mind reputation being capped, but why are guilds inaccessible here? Why can't I use my ship? Why do I have to earn less than a third of the gold? Why are we STILL limited to playing with no more than three friends? Imagine the excitement of sailing alongside your Discord server. I always assumed the reason crews were limited to 4 players was for PvP balance, but... there is no PvP here, so... what's the excuse now?
Sometimes, it's best to just let players enjoy the game the way they want to enjoy it.
Seriously, the limitations are something I'd expect from a F2P option.

Safer seas sounds like an amazing idea. I am looking forward to it, but why the level cap tho? It doesn't seem necessary to have the level cap be at 40. I don't think there needs to be one. Other than that Safer Seas sounds fine with me.

less risk = less reward. I don't think people should be able to become PL without playing the core game, which is that constant risk that you can be sunk at any time. Its called PIRATE legend, if you didn't earn the loot by protecting it then I don't think people deserve that title
If they wanted to make the PvPers happy, they could just force you to have two separate pirates.
One for high seas and one for safer seas, both earn regular rewards, but one is with PvP the other without, and no carry-over.
Personally, I thought about scrapping my pirate to start fresh in safer seas, since I won't be able to access the PL stuff anyway...
But then I can't tell sweaty PvPers that I'm a PL who hates PvP, isn't good at it, and doesn't want to "git gud" because I have an *actual life* to live and can't dedicate all of my free time to gaming.
No other game matches the feel of SoT, and pirates by and large *did not attack other pirates*

Honestly speaking, this safe seas mode was long due, one of my experiences in sea of thieves was my ship and crew being attacked while we were doing a tall tale, the first part of the shores of gold too when we had absolutely nothing. Which is why I would only from then on, do tall tales in quieter servers, or my favorite tactic, if I didn't need my ship for a tall tale, I would just scuttle it so that I'd be certain my ship would just respawn at an outpost and I could do my tall tale in peace.

Finally, I can actually enjoy the game and relax after a day of hauling cargo irl with some sailing. Still...it would be nice to have our captained ships so we can still have the feeling of returning to a ship that we own and named.

For example im now at lvl 45 in gold hoarders what would happen if i enter safer seas, does it go back to 40 or is it just stuck
you will continue to be level 45 but any loot delivered will only give you money and no experience, just like happens when you reach level 75 in the gold hoarders
You won't earn any new xp but the levels you've already got won't disappear
it wouldnt need to reduce your level, it just has to have a threshold where only within it you gain more rep, anything not in that threshold will just not add any more rep to it

A direct 30% nerf to gold and reputation gains is gonna see a lot of the safe seas players unable to progress due to the sludge slow progression. And when they are wanting high seas they will find they have no tools to accurately fire at perfect sail sloops with fire bombs galore.
The core problem of the game is that regardless of how well you play or learn the game, some dude with a macro'd controller can sword swim onto your boat, reload cancel their blunderbuss, kill your crew. Then while you wait to respawn they've sank you, not even accounting for if you have an older console or pc. Because those loading times are agonising.
If you can’t PvP go in safer seas. If that’s not enough for you then your the problem
please... it's fairly easy to become a decent player at pvp. Not everyone on the seas is a sword lord sweat god. I watch streamers with an xbox own people every day in this game. It's not about the hardware or cheaters it's about people who don't want to put in the time and effort to become decent at pvp yet still want all the gold and rewards just handed to them with 0 risk.

Despite a lot of people crapping on pve servers, I think that this is a very nice change. Not for me, I'm sailin' around on the high seas but for the newcomers that are going to quit after a scallywag spawnkills them on an outpost just after the maiden voyage. We'll see how it turns out tho

Been saying this for a while, the game has an absurd lack of tutorial. Often hearing ppls 1st experience of the game getting crapped on day 1 by experienced players. This kills many ppls will to pick the game back up.

@@Ms.Partiiplayers actually get a chance to learn the game properly before being thrown in with other players and they can also get some practice with both land and ship combat against ai.
@@Ms.Partii Bro think about it. You are a new player. You don't even know the basics of the game and you are not even used in handling your own ship. Suddenly a guy with more play time than you comes and kills you while you have no idea what you are doing. And just like that your progress on whatever you were doing is gone! So now take the PvP out and you learn the basic game mechanics (Movement, Ship Management, How the trading companies work, etc.) so after some days you feel more comfortable and you can get out on high seas expecting to start learning PvP. Yes the PvP will be very sudden and they will still die just as easy but at least now they know how the game works and after a few encounters with other players they will start getting the hang of PvP too. Also high seas will feel more rewarding because of the 100% price loot you get instead of the 30% that you were getting in safer seas. And because of the limits of Safer seas new players will be forced at one point to get on high seas if they want to progress so don't worry about it too much

How about an addition to when you start a safer seas server you get a server code and can set a password so your friends can also spawn on the same server with you on a different boat

I feel like Captained ships should be allowed, just not Captaincy Progress itself. I wouldn't mind playing on safer seas sometimes for Tall Tales or with friends who hates PvP but I still want to be able to keep my ship cosmetics to the fullest.

It’s kinda dumb that you can’t use captained ships in safer seas. Since a lot of people will probably use it for Tall Tales, it really sucks that you can’t use YOUR ships in those stories and instead you have to take generic ones in.

Edit: Just to shatter any delusions either the developers or the rabid PvP crowd might have. I will not ever "learn the game" in safer seas and then switch to high seas. Not going to happen, and I'm not alone. I think the player numbers will speak for themselves anyway. The PvE audience is magnitudes bigger than the PvP one. RARE will probably drop the idea of gimping safer seas in the future. The biggest hurdle "there will never be PvE servers" is already taken. It's only a matter of time.
No one wants you to "learn the game" if you don't want to but this is a pirate game and the core mechanic is pvp and stealing loot. It's named sea of thieves. If people want pve that's fine but then yes the rewards should be heavily reduced... much less gold and you should not have access to all the titles and achievements that the rest of us EARNED while constantly under the threat of pvp.
Yeah everyone seems to have lost the core reason of sea of thieves. Stealing or be stolen from. I doubt they'll add much to safer seas. Darn lunatics also won't have the fun fotd events and will miss out on the good stuff lol.
I personally dropped sea of thieves, as a player who started as a PVER in 2019 and started arena before its inevitable shutdown. I say that the pvp back then was way better than it is now. And as much as I like the missions, it seems like there's a lot but honestly it's just plain and shallow. People who play on safer seas will find it extremely repetitive without the pvp aspect and just start to complain more. Spoiled brats got what they wanted but still can't enjoy having it with the fair nerfs.

@Feroce2023 honestly with the way rare is going I can't disagree to this. I've already dropped sot so I couldn't really care less anymore about the game. Uninstalled and long gone, I just hate to see it going downhill. I like that PVE players are being compensated. If they did this back in 2019 I would have been estatic. But after playing sea of thieves and experiencing both sides. Choosing pvp was fun and worth it for the friends I've made along the way. I was just simply being a pirate in a pirate game and being told that "being a pirate in a pirate game makes me toxic" really doesn't have logic. I've said my gg's and had fun shared laughs. It was fun when it lasted.
Love the new mode but how can I customize my ship that isn't mine, especially when it forces me to play High Seas when I don't want to. I think you guys should implement the ability to bring your ship over into Safer Seas so we can customize and save it.
You can still customise your ship in safer seas you just can't customise it with furniture that's for captained ships
This is a great idea! My younger sister loves this game, but it gets a bit frustrating trying to hangout when giant ships are constantly attacking you. Good on Rare for continuing to make this game better!

I love the idea of Safer Seas because i am not good at the game, and specifically dont play this because i get taken down soo easily because im not good at the game. So with Safer Seas it will actually make me want to play the game. Although, i hate that the money is at 30%, i feel like that is egregious because i would be earning money more than 3 times slower than on High Seas. In my opinoin if you are going to make the money be capped, then do 75%. Because in the long run, players will still not be making enough money as people on high seas, and considering you buy everything with gold, the cap needs to be higher, because i went from hearing this and going. "OH MY GOD!! I can actually play this with my friends again and have fun!!!" To, "Well this is good, but very bad, and now i dont even know if i want to play this yet". Please Rare, dont be so hard on the restrictions because i guarantee you that if you do, you will have tons of more players wanting to play like me.

Please let us use our guilds in Safer Seas! If this is about choice then there's no reason not to let a community or group of friends all work towards goals together. If people want PVP let them seek it out. There are lots of players who don't want to be dragged kicking and screaming into those encounters.

I was so excited for safer seas. As soon as they said 30% of loot value, i immediately lost my enthusiasm. It should be at least 50%
It was originally going to be that, but Rare thought it would be to overpowered then and pirates would never leave. It isn't meant to make money, its to learn mechanics and do tall tales.

Less risk = less reward. It's a very fair percentage
@@depressoespresso3589there's still a risk though, with only one ship on the map Kraken attacks are going to be massively more frequent, megalodon attacks will still happen as will skeleton ships and events that you will need to battle to earn rewards from, all that extremely restrictive earning cap does is make a voyage of battling a fleet of skeleton ships, an event or two, a bunch of sharks and a handful of krakens amount to about the same as one of each in high seas with potentially less challenge as other players will take some of the fire from the AI ships, the only risk is that some players are assholes and might try to kill you even at the expense of their own ship and loot.
Safer seas needs to have that earning cap addressed and Rare needs to acknowledge the fact that they cannot force players to play the game a certain way, PvE servers should be identical to PvP servers but with 0 damage to players and player ships from players.

Past adventures aren’t replayable as of now but you can do all the tall tales.

I'm so excited! I have a very demanding job and not much time for gaming, it was always the most annoying thing to have only an hour to play and then have that ruined by some persistent arse who wouldn't leave me alone when all I wanted was to fish or explore a ruin. Thanks for this!
With such heavoly reduced rewards and especially the lack of emmissary to multiply your loot, regular looting will probably stay on high seas for my buds, but definitely swapping to safer seas for tall tales as those have almost no gold reward compared to a few hours of emmissary voyages and world events. Or if i feel like solo slooping for fun or a commendation.
Finally I can work through the story of the game. Love doing trade runs, but hate being interrupted when I am doing story stuff.
