Many practitioners stop right at blue belt b/c their initial reason for learning BJJ was self-defense in the real world. Once you are 2+ years in and have a blue belt, you are more than capable of defending yourself and have obtained what your initial goal was for joining in the first place. Anything higher is simply you honing those skills and edges that you’ve already learned. ✊🏾

Honest answer to this is because in bjj you have two choices; train at a small no name school with a majority of white belts and a huge turnover rate because the price is right until you eventually get bored or annoyed with always being the most advanced student and you feel like you arent improving so you quit or you train at a big name school that charges $200+ a month to join a cult and train under a professor that after a year still calls you buddy because he doesnt know your name since you dont compete. Took me quite a few schools before i found one with a good price and a professor that makes an effort to get to know the students as more than just a monthly transaction. A lot of people quit because it begins to feel like a chore to go to class instead of going to train with a good group of friends

Got my blue belt in 2021. I started training BJJ all the way back in 2008 and had a 7 year gap unfortunately (work, life). But when I finally got my blue belt, I knew I couldn’t stop. Currently I’m a 4 stripe purple belt. I can’t imagine not doing this anymore. The level of fulfillment is unmatched.

Watching blue vs purple and rolling with them, Purple generally is a lot better. There's an artistic quality that starts to come in. To win and do it with a certain elegance seems a worthy aim. I do see some of these guys getting injuries though and while some minor ones are maybe ok, I don't want to be like the guy getting his judo black belt after 20 years and 3 knee surgeries in 18 months. If self defence capability is the aim and you destroy yourself to get it, it seems to be self cancelling.

For me (current blue), it's because I'm simply not interested enough in certain aspects of bjj, namely the the guard and bottom game. I love grappling as a whole and i like taking what i like from each grappling art eg leg takedowns from wrestling, throws from judo, and subs from bjj. I don't see myself getting to purple because to be at that level I'm gonna need at least a decent understanding and ability to use/defend against all the different intricate guards.

I like striking arts better . So after one year I'm going to an MMA gym its the closet to street fighting . Plus Im a student of Brian Grey . Iron Palm training I actually harden my whole hands . I like breaking 1 inch patio blocks by punching and palming concreate blocks . I dont train for defense, but I train for offense. That works for me .

I hated Blue Belt. Easily the worst belt I ever got stuck with. Had it for seven years, it sucks cus u got this big ass target on ur back and ur over here doing ur best to solidify your technique and get critiqued by your coach like crazy. Unfortuantely as an Ultra Heavyweight sometimes people are so fragile or weak or light that they just fly off of u, it's not that I'm using a lot of strength, can we just be real for a second? Some white and blue belts are really weak and small. I understood my technique was the problem, and it took a very long time for me to just get technique down right. When I got to purple huge difference, I got respect, people recognized me for my technique and not my size cus as a blue belt u could be really technical but if ur big man people will use that as an excuse like crazy. My favorite question after beating somebody is "how much do u weigh?..", but yeah now as a Brown Belt I still say Purple is easily the best, u don't got anything to prove to anybody but people still respect you around the gym and competitions are just so much more fun as purple. Competing as a Brown and Blue Belt man feels more like a chore.

I went to Fabio Santos Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and many of the guys would get their ass kicked in the street, it doesn't work, one student was killed, stabbed to death trying to do an arm bar in the street. I practiced martial arts, a family style since 1968, and have found certain things in Jiu Jitsu work, but much of it doesn't work in the street! Fact! I have been in fights where people pulled knives, gun, club, Nunchaku sticks, brass knuckles, I fought them all in the street and won, thanks be to God I was able to win, more than 30 fights, and I can tell you that the BerimBolo won't work in the street when you have 5 guys piling on you!
