      I really enjoy your videos as well I like it when you also include time to complete not to compare or as a goal but gives better perception on how long an effect can take to be reached

    I just found your UA-cam drawings, and really wanted to thank you for offering your time and effort, I know that this requires a lot of work on your part, but I am sure that there are a small "army" of folks like my self that are truly appreciative! I have laid down my pencils for awhile now, but after watching. I am going to get back to it! I really like your work and again want to say thank you for your tutelage, sacrifice and inspiration.

    I tried this one and even though I lacked the Derwent Pencil Eraser with brush it still ended up as the best pencil sketch I've ever done. Without that eraser I wasn't able to get the tiny, bright leaf highlights you demonstrated but it was great nonetheless. Thank you so much for this. Subscribed.

    Every time I view one of your videos, I amass so many sketching techniques. Based my first sketch (ever) on watching one of the landscapes with trees, bridge, water. Then, went after some masterwork oil paintings to copy (Hudson River School), using various grades of graphite (trying to figure out different grades since I don't know about them), and keeping my laptop in front of me to take your lesson. ALMOST FORGOT ... the laying down of powder graphite to establish tonal values! And, your use of various erasers to give impression of light. Realized I had not used them in last two sketches, but powder makes such a difference for tonal values. I keep a jar w/lid closeby to scrape graphite since I use various grades. Will graduate to 2B soon, I hope. Thank you so very much for your videos .. as I've said before, you are brilliant .. as an artist and teacher. So great.

      Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated, yes graphite powder can make a big difference to the look of a drawing, it produces some lovely effects and tonal variations, that's a good idea to keep graphite powder in jars, its always ready and you know what grade it is, I have been thinking of doing the same thing, its great to hear you are having a go at these methods, thanks for taking the time to view and comment, happy drawing!

    Your remark near the end of your video about being an "opportunist drawer/painter" - I think what you mean is you are reacting to what's happening on the page (an expression that Canadian watercolourist Angela Fehr uses). I think that's a gift of a natural artist. For most of us, that doesn't come naturally, but we can hope it comes with practice and experience.

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  7 років тому +1

      Yes that's a much better way of putting it, thank you, I don't know if its a gift or just a way of thinking about whats going on in your drawing, I tend to see things (opportunities) that unexpectedly present them self that i like to react upon, thanks for the comment:)

    Very inspiring. I've always loved graphite but never allowed myself to just create a hazy background to start off with, like you might also do with charcoal. It really helps to start visualizing a scene from the imagination like you've done. I have to admit that I was a little sad to see the trees on the left disappear; they had a mystical look. I'm now a subscriber and hope to see more videos soon!

    With this video you've gained a new subscriber! I absolutely love the way you take the time to explain each step in an easy to understand way. I'm a beginner artist so I was a little hesitant to go into something as complex and difficult as entire landscapes, so I was really shocked at what I'd produced by the end through your tutorial. You have a really soothing voice too, which is really relaxing to listen to while drawing. Thank you for this video, it's helped me a lot :)

  • @scchawla2507
    @scchawla2507 2 роки тому

    Hi Jon 🙂.... Thirty years of practice shows up in your hands just like that...i loved this one...
    You might like to kill me actually 😀 but when i saw you work in the morning light...my God those trees felt so real... Which i wasn't able to see that clearly in the evening light!... Since you already do such stuffs regularly...i know it's too much of a sacrifice to ask for another half of the tutorial on which it can be seen clearly.. Maybe do that in the morning 😀... But i know when you say it's something that you enjoy doing.. The details.. The abstract, over and over again.. Getting it to reality.. And slightly drifting away from it, to get to your vision of it.. Which is approved under artistic licence 😂... It's would just be fun for you as well... You could speak about the technique or the tool and then get back again... And say just one sentence while you implement that technique.. When you talk and draw i go over your video at least twice...coz either i am mesmerized looking at what you are doing.. But you say important things too 😀🤦‍♀️... These days i am watching your art like asmr..i sleep while watching them... Is so relaxing
    I love the video logs that you do around your place... Till date i had thought myself to be an idiot clicking what i feel for.. They make great photos... Never thought I would dare try translating foliage with graphite... Wonderful control over the shades and pressures you have... No tooth damage...
    Where i stay...i am getting the clutch pencil but guess what, it comes with all the leads from HB, 2b, 4b, 6B... Etc but the pack of 12 or 24 or 40 or for that matter even one 2b lead seperately isn't available here🙄...
    I just bought Derwent pensil eraser and stumps... Coz you said...i am trying to get courage to try this while i wait for my cold pressed ca grain acid free A4 cartridge paper to be delivered to me
    This comment is so longgggg.. But you said you like to read them.. Am i actually sounding like speaking to you in real...gosh!

    Its my first time seeing your videos. I was expecting a simple little land scape drawing and from the very first step you blew up my thinking of how to sketch landscapes. Im completely new to sketching so i am not familiar with any of the tecniques. When you poured out graphite on the paper and blened it and then used an eraser for the background; i was done. Thats not some simple sketch; thats a detailed black and white photo negative man. The depth and detail you made is incredable. Wow

    This is just beautiful. Mind-blowing. I think I'll give it a try, although I don't expect anything even close to the result that you got. Regarding the Ticonderoga pencils and the request you made for comment. I can't comment on that particular brand because there are several, and they're all more or less the same, but in the United States, all those yellow pencils (called generically "number 2 pencils") are considered at the low end in terms of quality. They're the pencils that young kids use in school when they first learn to write. They're good for that purpose, but I don't think that they were ever intended for high-end art work like yours. You can buy a box of 96 for under $10, so maybe that's an indication of their quality. Good for some things, but not for artwork. Thanks very much for the videos. They're just gorgeous. Please keep them coming.

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому

      Thanks charlz, yes give this one a try its not as hard as it looks, there's no complicated perspective or tricky line drawing involved, you can let your imagination flow and take advantage of the marks the graphite powder makes. I agree with what you say about the generic number 2 pencils, I had seen several artist using the Ticonderoga's so I assumed they were ok....they are ok I guess, just a pity there's so much grit in them, thanks for the comment and info, much appreciated.

      Yes you can try with colored pencils, although they will be harder to erase to get the highlights.

    Just finding your channel, this is beautiful. I was amazed when you started scraping graphite and smearing it with a paper towel, I have never seen that done before. Do you have to use a fixative to keep it from getting messed up or smudges?
    Going to find your other video.
    I literally fell asleep to your voice, woke up and had to rewind to see what I had missed.

      Though I bought my first Bockingford Watercolor paper 300g CP (NOT) Grain Fin, I think I need more time to practise drawing trees & foliage. It's really not that easy. Anyway it's a good start for me.

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому

      The grain on Bockingford CP,is ideal for creating foliage on trees, good for pencil and wash work too, the picture in this video was done on Derwent sketching paper, but you can get a similar effect on Bockingford. Good to hear you're having a go, it just takes a bit of practice and you will be getting good results in no time.

      Thanks. Your paintings is my drive. I am not confident in watercolor painting though I draw portraits very often. It's my very first time picking up brushes and paints and had worked on Canson paper two of your paintings - the Wiveton house and the Cley Windmill. Mistakes and learn how wet my brushes should be, why my Canson paper buckled and it no longer accepted thin pigment forcing me to try on darker wash etc etc. That's all a beginner needs to know and it's very interesting. I hope I can learn more from your channel.

    Thanks Smoothie, I think that you have just inspired this old dog to try a few new tricks, I've never done a complete graphite drawing before, Now is the time to start I think, Excellent tutorial, looking forward to the next one, Happy drawing my friend...............ps How did you find that the new paper you tried faired up?

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому

      Hi Old Timer, glad you found some inspiration to have a go at a complete drawing, we are never too old to try new things, I remember a saying that said..." age is a matter of mind...if you don't mind it doesn't matter." lol, you have a go i'm sure you will enjoy using graphite, The new Derwent paper is a joy to use, the slight texture is just right , not to smooth or too rough, I haven't tried giving it a light wash watercolour yet, I will see how it handles that soon, I also bought a pad of Derwent grey tinted paper that I will be testing, hopefully I will use it in a video if its any good.

    Why do you sometimes use the Tombow eraser and other times the pencil eraser to make highlights? Aren't they both around the same size?
    Thanks again for your great videos. I watch them through at least twice. You have taught me a lot.

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  7 років тому

      The Tombow give a more precise line, not a great deal of difference but its noticeable enough to justify having both, thanks for the nice comment, much appreciated,

    Awesome Smoothie, haven't seen you about for a while and boy have I missed your tutorials. My family and I are off to Keswick for two weeks this Friday, home of Derwent so my eldest daughter and I will be in our element and I think your video is really going to help me pass the evenings away, sat by Derwent Water Lake and draw or paint a few landscapes. However I feel my lack of experience won't do such a beautiful area justice. Fantastic video Smoothie as always.

      Thanks very much for the nice comment, I hope you and your family have a great time at Keswick, its a beautiful part of the world, and of course there is the Derwent pencil museum and shop to visit :) I always wanted to spend a day at the Derwent museum and shop, the trouble is I would spend a small fortune buying too many Derwent pencils :) (as if I haven't got enough already) lol, I'm sure you will be filled will inspiration when you're there and have a great time drawing and painting.

      +smoothie77 I hear you Smoothie, I think my wife is dreading my daughter and I spending two weeks in Keswick and only a ten minute walk to the Derwent Shop, I think my wife will be well and truly in charge of the money lol. Also I wanted to ask you something if you don't mind? Are you a self taught artist or have you been to school or university? I absolutely love your work but your ability to teach others I think is excellent, your tutorials are always so well put together.

      Well I think you should have a good "spend" while you're there :)I'm completely self taught, mainly learnt from books and lots of practice. thanks again for the kind words.
