What's My Line? .. In the early 60s my brother and I bicycling over to CBS on Melrose Blvd expecting to see Bozo the clown TV show, we ended up reluctantly with tickets for Jack Benny since the clown was off the air for the season. . Although he had some famous guest star we didn't think it was a very entertaining show since we're very young.. my parents came along with us the second time they really enjoyed it...
My job each day at age ten was to go out and pick up the morning and the evening newspaper. When I went out on 12/26/74, and read the headline, I cried all of the way back up to our house (1/4 mile driveway). My Canadian grandmother was down for the holidays. We sat over hot cocoa and consoled each other with our favourite Benny jokes and stories. I was ten, she was sixty-four.

WE need Jack Benny & Charles Kuralt. We need class in this world. It is seriously lacking with yelling, ranting, screeching women, men who act like overgrown boys, we NEED the calmness of Jack Benny as Mr. Kuralt said. We NEED more great comedians who can simply put a smile on our face (without paint (JK)) There will NEVER be another Jack Benny, George Burns, Danny Kaye, Danny Thomas, Bob Hope or anyone of that caliber EVER again. I remember Jack Benny got one of the longest laughs on radio when he did a skit where his Benny was being held up at gunpoint, and referenced his character being a notorious skinflint. The robber told Benny "Your money or your life." There was a short silence, and then the robber repeated "Your money or your life!" Benny responded. "I'm thinking it over!"
I can't imagine any entertainer today who's funeral would rate a whole one hour tribute on a major network in prime time. He was truly one of the greatest of all time.
Mary Tyler Moore did in 2017 (though that tribute had too little Mary and too many talking heads). I think Carol Burnett and Betty White are the two living performers that would be most likely to get such a tribute (and deservedly so, for both).
Nope, Micheal Jackson wasn't on one of only three Channels (Networks), when there were ONLY 3 Networks at that time, for a whole Hour, in Primetime. Micheal was the biggest POP Star of all time, but his fame had taken a hard bump from the accusations of him being a Pedophile.
Jack Benny, Milton Berle, George Burns, Groucho Marx, true kings of comedy. They made the world laugh and that is a great thing; they still make me laugh even now.

I lived off Coldwater canyon in the 90210 zip code in the 1970's, I regularly saw Milton Berle walking at the Coldwater canyon park, he was found there every day, I saw Paul Newman a few times at Nate & Al's deli, I saw Kareem Abdul Jabbar in Westwood one time and stood next to him at Tower books, I met Johnny Crawford of The Rifleman show, I saw Phil Silvers regularly shopping at the Von's at Ventura blvd and Coldwater canyon in Studio city. My Uncle was The Tijuana smalls man and Doggo in The Octagon. I used to see Lucille Ball at the private club owned by Hugh Hefner called Pips, she played backgammon there all the time, I met her and talked to her a few times. I met the Capt from Gilligan's Island he owned a restaurant in LA.
Jack Benny had somrthing rarely found in celebrities today. Class. More than 40 years on, he's still missed. Thanks for posting this, I very much enjoyed going back to a gentler, simpler time.
We will never see the likes of him again! Those stars were beloved in ways that today’s celebrities simply don’t measure up to! I miss that time in the Entertainment business.😞

I was 2 years old when Jack Benny died. I came to know him in the Mouse that Jack Built. I later watched his reruns on cable and could not believe how much he could make me laugh with a simple look or reaction. He was a true gentleman which are almost all gone in society and entertainment. Thank you, God, for such a man and great comedian.
Jack Benny was a gentle giant. I was only 19 when he died, but I have so many wonderful memories of seeing and enjoying him on TV, mostly on talk shows, reruns of his program, and specials. In my later years, I discovered his films and classic radio shows. This is the only the second time since its original air date that I've seen this tribute. That CBS devoted an entire hour to celebrate his life speaks volumes of how much he was loved. Thank you for posting it on UA-cam.
A kind and over the top talented man. Played no favorites about ethnicity or station in life. An original and of gentleness, kindness and originality we will never see again. A little of generations heart is darkened without such people in our world today.
This is the best celebration of Jack Benny ever filmed. I saw it the first time it premiered on CBS and never forgot it. The violin duo with that darling woman McKenzie still brings tears to my eyes. I miss him to this day.

It warms my heart to see all the accolades given to Jack Benny by his former associates and peers in the sad wake of his untimely death. Jack was a beloved entertainment treasure whose immense talent rested not just in that most unique comedic persona of his, never equaled before or since, but also in his indelible way of spontaneously provoking rapturous glee in the audience through the most simple actions and mannerisms. I regret not having been born early enough to have heard Jack live on the radio or seen his voluminous television work at first-airing, but I do take respite in knowing his work lives on thanks to the archiving efforts of channels like this!

A wonderful tribute to a wonderful performer and human being. Jack Benny was the first of the classic comedians that I enjoyed so much at that time (and still do) to pass away and even though I was very young then I was very saddened by his passing. As a matter of fact his was the first passing of someone that I "knew" and "loved" before any of my family members that I was close with. Jack remains a special person in my life to this day and always will. Jack will never be forgotten by those of us who appreciate classic comedians and his legend and legacy will live on forever.

In the late 60's I sold programs at Dodger Stadium, Mr Benny would put down 4 bits (50 cents) for a 25 cent program. He was a wonderful man even to a nobody like me.
I remember when I heard Jack Benny died it was a very sad time for me, he was one of my very favorite comedians of all time and being part of the old time radio hobby even made it that much harder as we watched all the great ones pass into immortality. I still wonder how much better the world would be if they've could have all just lived maybe 10 years longer… good bye Jerome we still miss you rest in peace
To this day I thank Mr. Benny for bringing such joy to my childhood. Not just the t.v. specials of his vault and his violin competitions with those more talented, but for giving me a sense that while I was largely untalented in life, I could be confident that I was like Mr. Benny, a truly loved ‘ every man.’
I had just turned 10 when he died. Back the families sat together in the home and watch variety shows. He seemed to be be on everyone. He was so funny with his dry humor. RIP , Thanks for the memories. Sorry Bob, I had to use it.
'My friend and your friend....' It breaks my heart into a million pieces, watching all the mourners and hearing from Danny Thomas and Danny Kaye among others. All are gone now... I have shed many tears watching this. :(
Sure, there are a lot of comedians out there and have been for years. But nobody......had the style, grace and simplistic ways to make you laugh the way that Jack and the gang could do it and nobody ever will again. His radio shows are what helps keep me company while driving a semi for a career, and I can do it with a smile. Thanks Jack Benny. You still are a gift to those who appreciate good humor.

Bob Hope on Jack Benny's death: "It is the beginning of an end of an era". Seeing the people still alive at his funeral, all of them since then have also left us, Bob Hope couldn't have been more truthful. An era that is sadly forgotten of multi-talented people who could be funny in a smart simple way, without being rude or abrasive. Simpler times, fun times... I was born after Jack Benny's program left the air, yet I love that era, the golden age of television. I am drawn to the class act of these old timers. Thank you for preserving this tribute to a great man.
I remember when he died. I put his obit from the Chicago Tribune in my comedian’s book by William Chan. I only had a dim conception of him but the first time I saw him on TV was on The Lucy Show where they went into his vault. I never laughed so hard in my life. Years later they used to play his radio shows on “Those Were The Days” and then I discovered his genius. He was truly an American original who will stand with the greats of comedy forever! His timing was indeed perfection, as was his kindness to many performers. I wished I had been able to meet him and work with him.
Due to my extreme insomnia, I had just finished watching Burns & Allen and then the Jack Benny program, both on antennae TV in the middle of the night - early morn (around 3:00 / 3:30 am, mountain time)! Been watching them for a couple years now when I can't sleep.
He deserved the tribute. As a fan of Old Time Radio I found that playing Benny shows for friends made new fans. Going on vacation with husband and children I had a captive audience in the car and they were surprised. He was a great human being. I was very touched and teary-eyed by this tribute. Thanks for making it available.
In 1965 (or so) Jack came to Salt Lake to play a benefit with the Utah Symphony. At that time there was an Utah Youth Symphony which met on Saturday mornings during the season. It was an auditioned sight-reading orchestra. From time to time the soloist or other artist who had performed the night before with the USO would come and do a free gig with the Youth Symphony. At that time I had left my slot as a double-bassist and was living in Germany, but my younger brother played violin with the group. He reported to me that Jack came to play with the Youth. To this day my brother still rhapsodizes on the funniest two hours he ever spent...as with Ed Sullivan...he didn't even get paid.
My Mom really loved Jack Benny!! I never watched him till after she passed ,now I watch him n his,show,I tape every episode I can find.I see on every single show why my Mom loved him.He is still in 2020 one of my mist favorite guys to take away the Blues. My favorite shows,are when he goes somewhere else besides his home.Love Rodchester n him together as well.His cheap stingy act is hilarious and I can see why . He's just GREAT! I have to say, I was touched by Mr. Anderson's sentiments. It was obvious that the man admired and cared about Jack Benny a great deal. It's not at all surprising to me that those two men would have such a wonderful friendship in those days because often it's the people who have a good sense of humor who are the easiest going, 'coolest' and are less likely to be prejudicial.
I am a otr truck driver thank god for xm radio. One of my favorite channels is old time radio and I could listen to the Jack Benny program all day and never get tired of it. I am only 51 but I miss Jack dearly.😥😥😥
George Burns said the only two times he ever cried in public was doing the funeral eulogies of his Wife Gracie Allen who died on August 27, 1964 and his lifetime Best Friend Jack Benny who died on December 26, 1974. Many who personally knew George Burns stated there was something very different from him especially after Jack Benny's death who was the only close confident that kept that spirit up in him in the 10 years after his Wife Gracie Allen died.

My mother loved Jack Benny tremendously - at first from radio in her young years, and later, of course on TV. When his show came on television in the 50s and 60s, the set was automatically turned to his "program." My sister and I would watch along with my mother, who would always break up in tearful laughter. Eventually, I understood the jokes and started laughing myself. He's one entertainer I wished I had met in real life. RIP, Mr. Benny.

When Jack Benny died I was in my mid-twenties. I remember how shocked I was and was totally lost for a spell thinking why I couldn't understand why he wouldn't be around all of my life he was an institution in himself. I just expected him to be around forever. Everything has been said about what a great talent he was, what else is there to say. He was somebody to be absolutely admired.

Thanks for sharing this with us. He was such a great comedian in his own way. And it's true there are few people (I can't think of no one right now) that give awy all the laughs to ones collegues. I remember one episode on Screen Guild Players with Barbara Stanwyck (she was the reason I heard that episode) named: "why Jack is not going to appear on show" It shows quite a lot of this special art. All the fun out of laughing about him. He seems to be a very special person. Seeing all this people mourn over him it's a bit sad, but the extracts of his work make me laugh most of the time. Thanks for re-posting this; I had seen it when you posted it originally. I loved Jack Benny watching him on TV from the late 50's thru the mid 60's. The thing that bothers me so is that I was 23 going on 24 when he died and I admired him greatly, yet I can't remember the day he died and somehow I feel that I should. I've purchased every book, tape and dvd about Jack that I could; it bothers me that, in retrospect, I didn't appreciate this man enough when he was alive.
I remember when jack benny died i saw my grandparents crying i didnt know happened but i saw it on the news all i know he was a talented comic i saw a few times but jack benny death was a big deal way back then in 1974 this happened i was five years old
Richard Cook Growing up in Central Jersey I remember my first reaction to hearing Mary was from Plainfield. I really thought she was. The first recording of a Benny radio show I heard was the one from NYC in May 1947. Al Jolson was the guest. It took me many years to understand his jokes. I had no idea what a Hooper was (the old radio rating system like TVs Nielsen’s). Another part of the same show, Mary’s sister was supposedly dating an undertaker who had a convertible hearse. I have yet to find that funeral home in Plainfield. :-)

I was a baby on the scene at the GOLDEN YEARS...born in 1939...have had over 60 years of show business and jazzing on reeds and of course on EARS. It is a delight to be able to say that "I have lived through at least, the back end of the best!" At the beginning of Eleanor Powell and Fred Astaire's video dancing to Begin The Beguine with a steam train of an on stage big band, Sinatra's voice can be heard saying.. "Ya can sit around and wait for a hundred years! Y'ain't gonna anything like this again!
A completely beautiful and fully informing video for those of us who have heard about Jack Benny, but really didn't get to see the show bcs we weren't of that age, yet. What a man Jack Benny was and what a stellar performer in comedy and what a wonderful man in life. I'm happy I can come here and now see the greatness that I have missed!!!
I grew up in Waukegan, Il, Jack's hometown and I did attend Jack Benny Junior High and the school "mascot" is the 39ers, so even 46 years after his passing his memory lives on. I have just finished reading his autobiography written by Jack and his daughter Mary and it gave a good picture of a very active life in a relatively short time.
Thank you so much for posting this important remembrance of a true comedian icon. I’m 56 and recently discovered his radio show which has enabled me to survive my work’s stress. My youngest daughter who is 18 is a fan of the 30s and 40s (she believes she was born in the wrong era) but I am sharing this man’s brilliance. Thank you again. Sad to think that all the people paying tribute to the great Jack Benny are gone now, too. I still listen to his old radio shows, some of the funniest shows I ever heard.
Yoing ppl today might recognize Jack Benny by name, but not much beyond that. Basically from a very early age he was in the entertainment industry, vaudeville, radio, tv, etc. And what a giant he was, for many decades. Many comedians, Kelsey Grammer amomg them, have copied Bennys mannerism of the long pause, where we all know theres more to the joke than whats being said in words, and letting the other person get the laugh. Hard to helieve its coming up on 50 years since his passing. A true giant in the imdustry.
The sorrow I saw on every single face at the funeral, inside and out were sincerely grieved and brokenhearted. That truly touched me to my core. The end the duet with the lady, was absolutely classic!!! ❤️

The Jack Benny Radio Show is still the funniest radio program ever. I love listening to rebroadcasts of that program.

Johnny Carson received the same treatment on his death. That was January 2005.

Nope, Micheal Jackson wasn't on one of only three Channels (Networks), when there were ONLY 3 Networks at that time, for a whole Hour, in Primetime. Micheal was the biggest POP Star of all time, but his fame had taken a hard bump from the accusations of him being a Pedophile.
Jack Benny, Milton Berle, George Burns, Groucho Marx, true kings of comedy. They made the world laugh and that is a great thing; they still make me laugh even now.

I lived off Coldwater canyon in the 90210 zip code in the 1970's, I regularly saw Milton Berle walking at the Coldwater canyon park, he was found there every day, I saw Paul Newman a few times at Nate & Al's deli, I saw Kareem Abdul Jabbar in Westwood one time and stood next to him at Tower books, I met Johnny Crawford of The Rifleman show, I saw Phil Silvers regularly shopping at the Von's at Ventura blvd and Coldwater canyon in Studio city. My Uncle was The Tijuana smalls man and Doggo in The Octagon. I used to see Lucille Ball at the private club owned by Hugh Hefner called Pips, she played backgammon there all the time, I met her and talked to her a few times.
I met the Capt from Gilligan's Island he owned a restaurant in LA.

I was 2 years old when Jack Benny died. I came to know him in the Mouse that Jack Built. I later watched his reruns on cable and could not believe how much he could make me laugh with a simple look or reaction. He was a true gentleman which are almost all gone in society and entertainment. Thank you, God, for such a man and great comedian.
Jack Benny was a gentle giant. I was only 19 when he died, but I have so many wonderful memories of seeing and enjoying him on TV, mostly on talk shows, reruns of his program, and specials. In my later years, I discovered his films and classic radio shows. This is the only the second time since its original air date that I've seen this tribute. That CBS devoted an entire hour to celebrate his life speaks volumes of how much he was loved. Thank you for posting it on UA-cam.
A kind and over the top talented man. Played no favorites about ethnicity or station in life. An original and of gentleness, kindness and originality we will never see again. A little of generations heart is darkened without such people in our world today.
This is the best celebration of Jack Benny ever filmed. I saw it the first time it premiered on CBS and never forgot it. The violin duo with that darling woman McKenzie still brings tears to my eyes. I miss him to this day.

Jack's radio show was light years ahead of its time. The writers were brilliant. And that ensemble cast .... wow !!!
It warms my heart to see all the accolades given to Jack Benny by his former associates and peers in the sad wake of his untimely death. Jack was a beloved entertainment treasure whose immense talent rested not just in that most unique comedic persona of his, never equaled before or since, but also in his indelible way of spontaneously provoking rapturous glee in the audience through the most simple actions and mannerisms. I regret not having been born early enough to have heard Jack live on the radio or seen his voluminous television work at first-airing, but I do take respite in knowing his work lives on thanks to the archiving efforts of channels like this!

A wonderful tribute to a wonderful performer and human being. Jack Benny was the first of the classic comedians that I enjoyed so much at that time (and still do) to pass away and even though I was very young then I was very saddened by his passing. As a matter of fact his was the first passing of someone that I "knew" and "loved" before any of my family members that I was close with. Jack remains a special person in my life to this day and always will. Jack will never be forgotten by those of us who appreciate classic comedians and his legend and legacy will live on forever.

In the late 60's I sold programs at Dodger Stadium, Mr Benny would put down 4 bits (50 cents) for a 25 cent program. He was a wonderful man even to a nobody like me.
I remember when I heard Jack Benny died it was a very sad time for me, he was one of my very favorite comedians of all time and being part of the old time radio hobby even made it that much harder as we watched all the great ones pass into immortality. I still wonder how much better the world would be if they've could have all just lived maybe 10 years longer… good bye Jerome we still miss you rest in peace
To this day I thank Mr. Benny for bringing such joy to my childhood. Not just the t.v. specials of his vault and his violin competitions with those more talented, but for giving me a sense that while I was largely untalented in life, I could be confident that I was like Mr. Benny, a truly loved ‘ every man.’

I had just turned 10 when he died. Back the families sat together in the home and watch variety shows. He seemed to be be on everyone. He was so funny with his dry humor. RIP , Thanks for the memories. Sorry Bob, I had to use it.

Sure, there are a lot of comedians out there and have been for years. But nobody......had the style, grace and simplistic ways to make you laugh the way that Jack and the gang could do it and nobody ever will again. His radio shows are what helps keep me company while driving a semi for a career, and I can do it with a smile.

Bob Hope on Jack Benny's death: "It is the beginning of an end of an era". Seeing the people still alive at his funeral, all of them since then have also left us, Bob Hope couldn't have been more truthful. An era that is sadly forgotten of multi-talented people who could be funny in a smart simple way, without being rude or abrasive. Simpler times, fun times... I was born after Jack Benny's program left the air, yet I love that era, the golden age of television. I am drawn to the class act of these old timers. Thank you for preserving this tribute to a great man.

I remember when he died. I put his obit from the Chicago Tribune in my comedian’s book by William Chan. I only had a dim conception of him but the first time I saw him on TV was on The Lucy Show where they went into his vault. I never laughed so hard in my life. Years later they used to play his radio shows on “Those Were The Days” and then I discovered his genius. He was truly an American original who will stand with the greats of comedy forever! His timing was indeed perfection, as was his kindness to many performers. I wished I had been able to meet him and work with him.

Due to my extreme insomnia, I had just finished watching Burns & Allen and then the Jack Benny program, both on antennae TV in the middle of the night - early morn (around 3:00 / 3:30 am, mountain time)! Been watching them for a couple years now when I can't sleep.
I remember his show and many other shenanigans he did in the 50s ,60s and even the 70s on the Carson show. Lovely and kind person.
He deserved the tribute. As a fan of Old Time Radio I found that playing Benny shows for friends made new fans. Going on vacation with husband and children I had a captive audience in the car and they were surprised. He was a great human being. I was very touched and teary-eyed by this tribute. Thanks for making it available.
In 1965 (or so) Jack came to Salt Lake to play a benefit with the Utah Symphony. At that time there was an Utah Youth Symphony which met on Saturday mornings during the season. It was an auditioned sight-reading orchestra. From time to time the soloist or other artist who had performed the night before with the USO would come and do a free gig with the Youth Symphony. At that time I had left my slot as a double-bassist and was living in Germany, but my younger brother played violin with the group. He reported to me that Jack came to play with the Youth. To this day my brother still rhapsodizes on the funniest two hours he ever spent...as with Ed Sullivan...he didn't even get paid.
My Mom really loved Jack Benny!!
I never watched him till after she passed ,now I watch him n his,show,I tape every episode I can find.I see on every single show why my Mom loved him.He is still in 2020 one of my mist favorite guys to take away the Blues. My favorite shows,are when he goes somewhere else besides his home.Love Rodchester n him together as well.His cheap stingy act is hilarious and I can see why .

I have to say, I was touched by Mr. Anderson's sentiments. It was obvious that the man admired and cared about Jack Benny a great deal. It's not at all surprising to me that those two men would have such a wonderful friendship in those days because often it's the people who have a good sense of humor who are the easiest going, 'coolest' and are less likely to be prejudicial.
I am a otr truck driver thank god for xm radio. One of my favorite channels is old time radio and I could listen to the Jack Benny program all day and never get tired of it. I am only 51 but I miss Jack dearly.😥😥😥

George Burns said the only two times he ever cried in public was doing the funeral eulogies of his Wife Gracie Allen who died on August 27, 1964 and his lifetime Best Friend Jack Benny who died on December 26, 1974. Many who personally knew George Burns stated there was something very different from him especially after Jack Benny's death who was the only close confident that kept that spirit up in him in the 10 years after his Wife Gracie Allen died.

My mother loved Jack Benny tremendously - at first from radio in her young years, and later, of course on TV. When his show came on television in the 50s and 60s, the set was automatically turned to his "program." My sister and I would watch along with my mother, who would always break up in tearful laughter. Eventually, I understood the jokes and started laughing myself. He's one entertainer I wished I had met in real life. RIP, Mr. Benny.

I remember seeing Jack Benny on TV as a youngster when he was still active, and now am a collector of his radio shows and TV shows. He is my favorite comic. Thanks for this upload.
When Jack Benny died I was in my mid-twenties. I remember how shocked I was and was totally lost for a spell thinking why I couldn't understand why he wouldn't be around all of my life he was an institution in himself. I just expected him to be around forever. Everything has been said about what a great talent he was, what else is there to say. He was somebody to be absolutely admired.

Thanks for sharing this with us. He was such a great comedian in his own way. And it's true there are few people (I can't think of no one right now) that give awy all the laughs to ones collegues. I remember one episode on Screen Guild Players with Barbara Stanwyck (she was the reason I heard that episode) named: "why Jack is not going to appear on show" It shows quite a lot of this special art. All the fun out of laughing about him. He seems to be a very special person.
Seeing all this people mourn over him it's a bit sad, but the extracts of his work make me laugh most of the time.

Thanks for re-posting this; I had seen it when you posted it originally. I loved Jack Benny watching him on TV from the late 50's thru the mid 60's. The thing that bothers me so is that I was 23 going on 24 when he died and I admired him greatly, yet I can't remember the day he died and somehow I feel that I should. I've purchased every book, tape and dvd about Jack that I could; it bothers me that, in retrospect, I didn't appreciate this man enough when he was alive.
I remember when jack benny died i saw my grandparents crying i didnt know happened but i saw it on the news all i know he was a talented comic i saw a few times but jack benny death was a big deal way back then in 1974 this happened i was five years old

As a young girl , I grew up to listening to Old Time Radio . I remember when Jack Benny died . I was just shy of my 15th birthday .
He was a class act , they don’t make them like that anymore , he was a groundbreaker with his tv shows much imitated rarely upstaged
I understood his comedy when I was a child ( I am 63). It never gets old.

Growing up in Central Jersey I remember my first reaction to hearing Mary was from Plainfield. I really thought she was. The first recording of a Benny radio show I heard was the one from NYC in May 1947. Al Jolson was the guest. It took me many years to understand his jokes. I had no idea what a Hooper was (the old radio rating system like TVs Nielsen’s). Another part of the same show, Mary’s sister was supposedly dating an undertaker who had a convertible hearse. I have yet to find that funeral home in Plainfield. :-)

I grew up in Waukegan, Il, Jack's hometown and I did attend Jack Benny Junior High and the school "mascot" is the 39ers, so even 46 years after his passing his memory lives on. I have just finished reading his autobiography written by Jack and his daughter Mary and it gave a good picture of a very active life in a relatively short time.

Sad to think that all the people paying tribute to the great Jack Benny are gone now, too. I still listen to his old radio shows, some of the funniest shows I ever heard.
Yoing ppl today might recognize Jack Benny by name, but not much beyond that. Basically from a very early age he was in the entertainment industry, vaudeville, radio, tv, etc. And what a giant he was, for many decades. Many comedians, Kelsey Grammer amomg them, have copied Bennys mannerism of the long pause, where we all know theres more to the joke than whats being said in words, and letting the other person get the laugh. Hard to helieve its coming up on 50 years since his passing. A true giant in the imdustry.
