I was subbing in a high school band class for a few days. They played "Don't fear the reaper". When they got done I said, "it needs more cowbell". They had no idea why I was laughing, or what I was even talking about. So I gave them UA-cam homework. The next morning they played it again, with lots more enthusiasm, and the student with the cowbell was dancing all over the room. I wish I'd got that on video.
Recall an interview with BOC band member commenting that other band mates too were calling each other during the live SNL skit with shock and laughter.
I heard an interview with them years ago, and after the skit aired, they did a show somewhere and wanted to see if Will Ferrell could come onstage and play the cowbell with them, but he was 100 miles away at the time and couldn't do it. Would've been cool if that could've happened.
🌸 so Christopher Walken has said in interviews after the skit was done... through the years, he could be anywhere like at restaurants or wherever and people come up to him and ask him if he wants more cowbell
Chris Parnell is the unsung hero in this sketch, he is fantastic, every line reading, every look, his subtle annoyance at Will Ferrell.....even just the way he sings at the microphone, as a "rock star", spot on the money.
Damn, you're right. Will and Christopher steal the show, but he is the anchor. I also realized that when people dress up as 70s rockers, they look like someone dressed up as a 70s rocker. Chris looks like he walked out of 1973.
The great thing about this skit is that it is unabashedly silly. It embraces its silliness. I love how the drummer is breaking character at about 7:46.
I heard that "The Continental" sketch was written for a different hollywood big name guest host, but he turned it down because it was so text heavy and involved a complicated coreography with the camera, so that actor got afraid to do it live. But not C. Walken. He began his career on stage, and he allways dreamnt of doing musicals, therefore complex coreographies are ok for him. He was not afraid of doing "The Continental" live, and it became a SNL classic.
Note Will did this skit normal in rehersal, then when he went back to his dressing room and cut his shirt, and no one knew he did it right before they filmed it.
It's one of the most popular SNL skits in the history of the show. I read that Blue Oyster Cult brings an audience member on stage to play the cowbell when they perform this song.
"My" SNL was from its debut show in 1975 with the original, incredible cast including Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtain, John Belushi, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. SNL has had its peaks and valleys over the decades, and has had other outstanding casts. So many comedians caught their rocket to fame here in these great ensembles. I think most of these young actors/comedians felt like they had "made it to the big time" when they landed a spot on that cast. What a dream come true for them.
"had" is the operative word. I grew up watching it every single week in the 80's/90's but man it started to suck in the 2000's. Haven't been able to get through an episode in years now. Lame jokes and even lamer cast members.

Inspired by the Walken scetch, Josh from Queens Of The Stone Age put a cowbell in LITTLE SISTER, which became a radio favorite. When QOTSA was on SNL, Will Ferrell played cowbell with them - in character.
Great reaction! This one should be followed up with Will Ferrell vs Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers drum off from the Tonight Show. Another laugh riot.
If you haven't done much SNL, it's really a treasure trove for you two to delve into to complement the music. You could pick skits from the same time period as the bands you are reviewing.....It actually gives insight into the zeitgeist of the popular culture throughout the five decades it's been on. In addition to this skit, you would probably find many of the "Wayne's World" skits hysterical....especially if you've seen the movie. They did a skit with Aerosmith that was damn funny.
I saw aw an interview with Christopher Walken where he says that he has gotten more comments from people in public about the "More cow bell" skit than an other part that he has ever done in his career. Everyone loves the "More cow bell" skit!!! Funny is funny forever!!!
Congrats, you just took your cowbell prescription! Now you're gonna need a daily dose of SNL skits in your life! I recommend the chip and dale auditions!
The first time Schweddy Balls sketch was on SNL, it had more adult innuendos from radio callers. For some reason, I can never find the original sketch on UA-cam
an SNL skit you would love is the Blues Brothers. So good they turned it into a movie. Very funny and great music. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, backed by the SNL band, which were great musicians.
If you guys enjoy comedians cracking each other up you definitely need to watch (if you haven't already) Tim Conway & Harvey Corman on the Carol Burnett show, plenty of 10-15 min complications of them out there. Also the famous "Elephant story" scene from Mommas House, a spin off series of a recurring skit from the Burnett show. Just when you think Tim has won the scene , Viki Lawrence steals the whole thing with just one line at the end! Cheers 🤣👍
@taiwanjohn if you haven't seen it already you need to watch the Viki Lawrence interview where she gives more detail about how that whole scene and why she did what she did, makes it even funnier knowing the behind the scenes details!👍
Also there’s a really funny video of Will Ferrell coming out playing cow bell while Green Day was playing East Jesus Nowhere during their performance. Definitely worth a watch.
🌸 I've had this running gag with my son almost his whole life LOL I still once in awhile will send him a picture of Christopher Walken with the caption 'we need more cowbell' 😂😂

There was a 1970s TV variety show called The Carol Burnett Show. It was done in front of a live studio audience and the actors often did things to make each other laugh.
Was out for the New Year last night and the band was really rocking that cowbell. My mind immediately went to this skit. It's just such an established cultural meme by now.
Saw it when the internet was young. Everyone said, "you got to see this skit; you can watch it on line." So I clicked on the video and waited for it to download (oh, the anticipation) finally it showed ready and I pushed play. Simply hilarious! I was belly laughing; "...I be doing this band a disservice if I didn't play the HELL out of this thing!"
This was such a good cast. I’d highly recommend “Cork Soakers” on SNL. It’s pretty much the same cast members, but with Janet Jackson. It’s hilarious. 😂
There are so many great skits on SNL that it’s hard to choose! In memory of Jimmy Carter, there is an early skit where President Carter is talking about his policies with callers and gets a call from someone with a really ‘crisis’. A very funny piece!
I owned every BOC album and have heard Don't Fear the Reaper about 10,000 times and never heard the Cowbell until after watching this skit and then one day I'm like "There's really cowbell in the actual song!"
Love my shirt with Walken say "I need more cow bell" bought it in OC Maryland 10 years ago and still wear it and get alot of people telling me the same. ..😂

Same here! i was in a metal cover band and at practice the next day we were repeating it constantly.🤣
I’m glad you said that! Just a few days ago, I wondered what those guys thought of it. I Googled it and was happily surprised.
I saw BOC at my local casino in 2018 or 2019 and Eric Bloom "air cowbelled" at the intro of Don't Fear The Reaper. They love it.

What you don't know is that going forward, every time you hear "Don't Fear the Reaper", all you will hear is the cowbell.

From now forward, when hearing that song, the cowbell will never go unnoticed.

He's a Treasure for sure.
Chris Katan’s “What does that mean?” after Walken’s “gold-played diapers” line is such an underrated funny line in this skit.

It's my favorite line from the skit. I use it all the time to this day. It only works if you say in the same whiny, nasally tone though 😄
Christopher Walken hosted SNL 7 times. His recurring character was The Continental. It was always great when he was on the show.
Yep the best

Will Ferrell at his height on SNL, combined with the straight deadpan of Christopher Walken, comedy gold.
