James Earl Jones and John Amos were well established actors before this movie. The large guy that works behind the counter with Murphy and Hall, was comedian Louie Anderson...R.I.P.
"Not the dog... I don't even know this dog and I'm so sad!" That joke walks a fine line, but the delivery of "Damn shame what they did to that dog..." and the tape outlines really make it work 😅
That scene always sets me wheezing man. The body outline fo the dog, the cane being there too, the legitimate sadness in the landlord's voice when he was just berating the dude that fell down the stairs, it's all crafted so perfectly.
Eddie also played multiple characters in The Nutty Professor films as his character’s whole family and a character based on the late Richard Simmons. All of the makeup for Eddie & Arsenio’s multiple characters was done by Rick Baker who I believe won an Oscar for this film. He was also the makeup designer for The Nutty Professor films.
The third barber in this is the guy with the doo rag in the cell with Valentine in "Trading Places." The "McDowells" was a Wendy's on Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst, Queens. Sadly it was torn down more than ten years ago and made into a apartment building.
Rick Baker was the makeup artist who transformed Murphy and Hall into so many characters. The makeup that made Eddie Murphy into Saul the Jewish barbershop guy is among my top favorite film makeups of all time! (I'm a professional makeup artist myself, though nowhere near that level!) Baker also did the makeup on Michal Jackson's "Thriller" video, among MANY other credits. Baker worked with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence on a film titled "Life" (1999) that sees both characters age over more than sixty years. A funny and poignant comedy/drama film which I highly recommend!

Fun fact: 1) You may not have recognized a very young Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Jerry Maguire - 1996) getting his hair cut in the first barbershop scene. 2) The taxi driver that almost hit Akeem is Hailee Steinfelds (Kate Bishop - Hawkeye) uncle Jake Steinfeld. He use to be popular for long running fitness infomercials on TV years ago. 3) Paula Abdul did the choreography for the big wedding intro scene
The actor that played Lisa's father was pretty famous at the time. He had the epic role of TOBY in the movie "Roots"., and played the father Mr Evans in sitcom "Good Times".
This movie is an absolute classic, many memorable lines and scenes. Akeem is actually a really genuine and cool dude and a solid role model for 80s and 90s kids. Don't be a Daryl kids, be Akeem!
Eddie Murphy as the old white guy is still probably the best makeup job I have ever seen in a movie, and it was in 1988. His acting just sold it that much more.

Great reaction Addie i love this movie its hilarious, One of the standout features of this movie is Eddie Murphy’s incredible portrayal of not just one, but four different characters in the film. He plays the main character, Prince Akeem, as well as three other supporting characters, including Clarence the barber. This showcased Murphy’s versatility and comedic talent. There are some fun-facts about it, Landis and Murphy revisited two central characters from their earlier collaboration. Wealthy brothers Randolph and Mortimer Duke lost everything betting against Billy Ray Valentine (Murphy) in Trading Places. Actors Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche reprised their roles as the brothers in penury on the receiving end of Prince Akeem’s largesse. When they discover the envelope given to them is filled with cash, Randolph proclaims, “Mortimer, we’re back!” James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair got their 'Lion King' roles from the movie. James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair turned in suitably regal performances as Zamunda’s King Jaffe Joffer and Queen Aoleon. So impressed were audiences and Hollywood executives, Jones and Sinclair would be asked to reunite for the 1994 animated blockbuster The Lion King in the roles of Mufasa, king of Pride Rock, and his mate, Sarabi. McDowell’s restaurant was actually a Wendy’s, not a McDonald’s, the actual restaurant used in the movie was a working, Queens Boulevard Wendy’s location. The building remained a restaurant until 2013 when it was demolished to make way for a luxury apartment building. 'Darryl' went on to play Dr. Benton on "ER" for eight years. I hear he is an Exec. Producer on "Chicago PD" today. Jay Leno once had him on The Tonight Show in the 90's and he was a bit embarrassed by a photo of him with the Jheri-curls!
It's a wonderful movie and in here it also really shows what a great actor James Earl Jones is. He has this kind of regal arrogance in his movements, he plays the role of King so well. If you want to see James Earl Jones as a villain you should watch Conan the Barbarian sometimes if you haven't, he is really great in it.
I know Eddie playing the old white man got you, but it got everyone. He went out in public in that disguise and nobody knew it was him, and he was at the height of his fame at the time.
Addie, this is the second time that I am making this movie reaction recommendation. After witnessing your Christopher Reeve crush from Superman, you need to react to Somewhere in Time. Christopher stars in the lead role as Richard Collier, a playwright and a time traveler. I am sure you will enjoy Somewhere in Time. The chemistry between Christopher and Jane Seymour, the female lead, is wonderful. The bulk of the movie takes place on Michigan's Mackinac Island, making the movie even more special.
I went to Marine Boot Camp on Parris Island in 1989.Believe it or not, they showed us this movie. They saw that we needed a little bit of a break, hence this movie. Most evenings, they rolled out a TV and put it on CNN Headline News, so we could see what was going on in the real world (We were all in love with Lynne Russell). So yeah, that's my comment on this movie.

@@DrJekyll38 he's also Will Munson, the father in Logan (2017).
🤔So, basically, you’re saying that Darryl is “The worst!”, is that correct? 😆😂🤣
Great reaction, keep up the great work.🖖🏻
It's a wonderful movie and in here it also really shows what a great actor James Earl Jones is.
I love watching coming to America reactions because my name's Darryl, so all the reactors just trash my name haha

Best cameo ever!!
This is usually regarded as Samuel L. Jackson's major film debut.
My brother worked at that hotel in the late 90s
The actors of his mum and dad went on to play the Mum and Dad lions in lion King!
The McDowell's restaurant was actually a Wendy's for many years, right by the Queens Center Mall.
