The real secret to this trick was how far ahead of its time it was. To think turn of the 19th century , to have something this complex in that small of an object when most people had never even seen anything mechanical in there life smaller then a train .
I’ve heard about this but didn’t think I’d see it (didn’t know if a working copy still existed!) So neat to see it and think about how the audience would have reacted back in the day! What a marvelous illusion!
Watch the movie illusionist, I think the people back in the day would have a similar feeling to the audience of that movie ^-^ great movie btw, brought me here cause I just had to see if it was based on a real trick
@@saki1333 yeah, the trick in the movie is pure CGI but the way it looks is the way people would have remembered it back then, as if it was sprouting and growing before their eyes. Piff the Magic Dragon did a joke video about the forward progress of technology and its effect on illusion where he recreated Copperfield's disappearing Statue of Liberty but with CGI, it's pretty funny to watch.

That was fantastic for so many reasons, the imagination, the tinkering, the style, and I love the presentation that sort of transports me back to those days. I was in awe, and I can only imagine what it felt like to see it back then! Amazing!
It makes me think of the Mango tree appearance illusion in India, the secret passed down through families here and very rare to see it performed live. Even magicians in India don't know the secret.

@@douglasoverholt1463 actually 4 of the oranges are real oranges so houndin would remove them and pass them off to the audience. only the top one is fake.

I remember watching the Paul Daniels show and he did this illusion, love it, to see it originally way back when must have been awe inspiring.
Unbelievable for it’s time. My dad was a member of the Magic Circle in the 1950s, and I recently applied for membership.
